Subject: [*] A Find Alternative 1.5

What is the Find Alternative?

A Find Alternative is a shareware utility designed to help users choose which
utility they want to use in place of the System 7.5 Find File. At this time
the Find Alternative supports users of Norton Fast Find, File Buddy, Find Pro
III, UltraFind and FindText.

What's new in version 1.5 of the Find Alternative?

Support has been added for the shareware program, FindText.

What exactly does the Find Alternative do?

The Find Alternative consists of several programs (components) that rewrites
the code in your system software (namely, the Find File Extension and Finder)
so the utility of your choice is launched when choosing "Find..." from the
Finder's File menu, or when you type a Command + F.

If permitted, the Find Alternative compnonets will also modify your Finder,
so that the File menu's "Find..." and "Find Again" commands are replaced by a
command displaying the name of your prefered utility. For example, if you
use the shareware program File Buddy, then your "Find..." command will be
replaced with "File Buddy...".

The modification of your Finder is purely a cosmetic enhancement so you may
skip this option if the thought of modifying your Finder makes you uneasy.

The Find Alternative is not free.

The Find Alternative 1.5 is being distributed as $10 shareware. Please
consult the document named "Registering the Find Alternative" for information
how to register, as well as what benefits you are entitled to by being a
registered user.

Redistributors, please note:
Permission is given to distribute the Find Alternative 1.5 on CD-ROMs, and
may be bundled with books and magazines as long as I receieve a discount or
complimentary copy of the CD-ROM, book, or magazine. Documentation and all
parts of the Find Alternative must be included in any redistribution.

Subject: [*] Alphabet Zoo 3.0 Demo

This is the Alphabet Zoo 3.0 Demo, which teaches the formation and
recognition of upper- and lower-case printed letters. Kevin Koala and
other animals demonstrate how to draw the letters. Then,
IntelliTrace-TM technology enables the child to use the mouse or
TouchWindow-TM to trace a letter on screen and receive real-time
visual feedback. A second activity promotes letter recognition by
having the child move an animal to the letter corresponding to the
name of the animal. This demo version is fully functional, with
sounds and animation, but only contains the letters A through E.

You have our permission to place this demo on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] Anonymous 1.2

Have you ever wondered what your font is missing? Line feeds, the Apple
characters like the Apple symbol and many more appear as blank boxes in
lots of fonts. Almost all of the Macintosh characters, including decimal
1-24 and 218-255, and many not in ProFont, are now visible in Anonymous.

Anonymous is a nonproportional or monospaced 9 point bitmap font designed
for programming, and for distinguishing between characters that can easily
be confused in the Macintosh reserved ROM font Monaco 9. For example, in
the Monaco 9 bitmap, an uppercase O looks like a zero, and a lowercase L
looks like an uppercase i. This font was created in the indispensible
bitmap editor Fontastic Plus, a product of Altsys Corporation that still
runs in System 7.5.x though it was last modified in 1988. Anonymous has a
beautiful overall color when set into text, and is easy to read in long
stretches. The font's name begins with A for easy access in font menus.

Bitmap only, not for printing. Recommended highly for those who are looking
for a monospaced serif font and have found Monaco, ProFont and Courier
wanting, and for those who spend a lot of time typing and reading on a
monitor. For the record, Susan had neither seen nor heard of Andrew Welch's
ProFont until years after Anonymous was created. A small illustration of
these fonts plus Monaco is included below for comparision. This version
does have slashed zeros, which were included against very good advice, and
can easily be removed in ResEdit.

Let us know if you have any suggestions. Someday Anonymous may be a bitmap
family and outline font for printing, but that will not be anytime soon.
Corrections are welcome.

Anonymous is copyrighted freeware, (c) 1991-1996 by Susan G. Lesch and
David B. Lamkins, all rights reserved worldwide. Anonymous can be freely
distributed as long as it is not modified and this documentation
accompanies the font suitcase. Anonymous may not be sold or offered for
sale, or included with another software product offered for sale, except
with our express written permission.

CreditMedic is the easy to use Macintosh credit management program
that allows you to be your own "credit repair pro." CreditMedic walks
you through the credit repair process. You do it privately on your
Macintosh, instead of paying someone else hundreds or thousands of
dollars to do it for you.

CreditMedic has everything you need.

CreditMedic will:
* Print credit reports requests from the major credit bureaus
* Compose dispute letters that get results based on the type of
negative mark
* Track all correspondence with credit bureaus and creditors
* Compose negotiation letters to creditors based on status of the
account and
* Teach you the techniques credit repair clinics use when they charge
up to $1000 to repair your credit!!

The CreditMedic Reference contains the credit repair strategies, from
the common to the unscrupulous, that the so called "credit repair
pro's" use. CreditMedic gives you the knowledge and the tools you need
to repair your own credit from your Macintosh.

This trial edition allows you to use CreditMedic for 30 days before
deciding to register.

Subject: [*] Cron 1.0a7 fat

Cron is a program that launches other programs (including AppleScript
applets) at preset times. This scheduling of program launches can be as
simple as "run this program every hour" or "run this program at noon
every day," or as sophisticated as "run this program every third minute
during the four o'clock hour on the first Monday of every month." It is
based directly on the cron daemon in the BSD Unix operating system
(there is no common code at any level, however), and has been in
widespread use on the Macintosh since shortly after System 7.0 was
released in 1991.

You can use Cron, for example, to reboot your Mac in the middle of the
night and rebuild its desktop file, synchronize its clock with an Internet
Time Protocol server, run your favorite email program or open your favorite
Web page just before you arrive in your office each morning, notify you of
important dates and times (like quitting time, or your dog's birthday),
run that wonderful AppleScript applet you've created every night, etc.

Features:
* Highly flexible event scheduling inherited from its UNIX namesake.
* Macintosh-specific event scheduling options.
* Launches/opens applications, AppleScript applets, desk accessories,
documents, and a variety of bundled cron commands.
* Excellent compatibility. Cron is a conventional Macintosh application,
not an Extension, Control Panel, etc., and it does not patch any traps.
* Variety of bundled Cron commands that perform tasks such as synchronizing
your Mac's clock with Internet Time Protocol servers, mounting/unmounting
AppleShare servers, issuing commands to remote hosts via rexec,
restarting the Mac and rebuilding its desktop, quitting applications,
displaying messages for the user, opening URLs, etc.
* Simple Internet Version Control protocol (SIVC) support.
* Convenient shareware fee payment (on-line, even) via Kagi shareware
registration service.
* Fat binary - runs at full speed on Macintoshes and Power Macintoshes alike.

Requirements:
* System 7.0 or better.
* Apple's Thread Manager extension (built into System 7.5 and all later
systems).
* Text Editor - SimpleText works up to a point, but BBEdit is recommended.

Keywords: AMBROSIA ARCADE RPG ACTION ESCAPE VELOCITY ANDREW WELCH SPACE

Check your calendar: It's 2246, and the galaxy just isn't what it used to
be. Spacefaring pirates roam free, civil war rages, and simple traders
cheat death to make a living. Welcome to life in the 23rd century!

Ambrosia Software's Escape Velocity puts you smack-dab in the middle of
that booming galaxy. As the captain of a shiny new spacecraft, you make
your fortune and build your empire. If that sounds like a walk in the
park, you're in for a surprise - dangers abound! Your lowly shuttle
craft will need more than a little luck to make a profit... and survive.

Lovingly hand-crafted by programmer Matt Burch, Escape Velocity offers a
rich and open-ended environment that evolves as you play. Over a hundred
worlds occupy the galaxy, each with its own technology, alliances, and
commodities. As you earn credits and gain fame, Confederation peace
keepers and Rebel patriots struggle for power, leaving you in the middle.

Escape Velocity spans a number of genres, combining elements of classic
"trading" games, arcade space shoot-outs, and strategy simulations.
Whether you choose to build a trading empire, aid the Rebellion in a
civil war, or strike out on your own as a ruthless pirate, Escape
Velocity provides a multitude of options for the game connoisseur. This
open-ended gameplay allows each player to chart their own course as they
play; there's no "right" way to play Escape Velocity, as long as you have
fun!

Numerous sub-plots fill Escape Velocity's world; your choices affect the
story's development, guaranteeing that each game will be different from
the last. You'll have the opportunity to infiltrate hostile military
bases, ferry emergency supplies to distant star systems, rescue
passengers from stranded cruise ships, stop alien invaders, and more. In
addition, Escape Velocity sports an open game engine. Future scenario
designers will be able to create their own worlds for other players to
explore...

Escape Velocity runs on any Mac with a 640x480 color monitor and 5.8
megabytes of free RAM. Optimized for the PowerMac, it's lickety-split
smooth on Apple's latest iron. And of course, Escape Velocity has the
dazzling 3D rendered graphics, full stereo sound, and all the polish that
you'd expect of an Ambrosia game.

Price: $20.00
Requires: 256 Color Screen, 13" or Greater; 040 or PowerPC recommended

Subject: [*] Finder Windows 1.1.3

Have you ever wished that the Finder had a simple "Window" menu like
many other applications? Finder Windows is a control panel that adds a
"Window" menu to the Finder. You can now see a list of all the
Finder's open windows, choose among them, stack them, and arrange
them.

Finder Windows requires System 7 or higher.

Finder Windows 1.1.3 fixes incompatibilities with some printer drivers

To be compatible with other extensions and control panels that add
command-keys to the Finder, the Finder Windows control panel allows
you to change the command-key equivalents of stacking and arranging.

Subject: [*] Mando! v1.4 -- An Interactive Chord Book for Mandolin

This function is distributed as a Fat Binary--that is, this function runs
on both 68k based Mac's and native on PPC based Mac's.

Mando! v1.4 provides chord lookup for Mandolin in standard tuning, and
additional chord processing for 4 non-standard mandolin tunings and the
Mandola. In the standard tuning library, 17 chord types are supported with
3 or 4 different fingerings each, depending upon the chord. To plot a
chord diagram, select the root of the chord from the Root menu, and the
type of the chord from the Type menu. Then, diagram it with the Form
0,1,2,3 buttons from the tool bar. Non-standard tunings do not contain
these built-in chords, but full use of the Neck Window functions are
supported (see below).

In standard tuning, Form 0 chords are available for Major, Minor, and
Dominant 7th chord forms and are generally the open or common forms of the
chord. Form 1 chords generally have the root on the 4th string. Form 2
chords generally have the root on the 3th string, and Form 3 chords
generally have the root on the 2nd string.

The Neck Window view provides additional chord lookup functions. This
window allows the browsing of chord fingerings over the neck and has a
Name-that-Chord function which recognizes 40 different chords in standard
and non-standard tunings. These user-created chord voicings may then be
diagramed in the chord editor window.

This function requires either a 68k-based Macintosh with System 7.1 or
higher and a 68020, 68030, 68040, or a Power Macintosh with System 7.5 or
higher. A color monitor with at least 480 lines is highly recommended.
QuickTime with the QuickTime Musical Instruments extension is required for
sound output.

A guitar version is also available.

Enter the dark with the "Dark Side Beep," another original creation from
Clixsounds. This sound file is designed to be used as a System Alert
Beep and sounds great on any system, particularly on ones that have a
stereo speaker system. The sound is an ominous synth chord that flanges
downwards for a nice, deep bass conclusion.

The Dark Side Beep is available for download in the 8-bit/22kHz version
here. You can download the 16-bit/44kHz version at the Clixsounds WWW

Subject: [*] Velocity 1.0.1

"Velocity" is an application for the Macintosh which allows you to
change velocity value of incoming MIDI Note On message.
If velocity curve of your MIDI master keybord doesn't match your
synth module, by inserting this application in between, it sounds
better.

One window has 16 velocity conversion tables for 16 MIDI channel.
If there are two or more windows opened, "Velocity" chooses velocity
conversion tables in the frontmost window.

Features :
Fat Binary.
Macintosh Drag and Drop support.

This application requires :
Macintosh with 68020 or higher / PowerPC
System7 + QuickTime or System7.1 or later
Apple MIDI Manager

What's changed in 1.0.1:
* Become stationery aware.
* Can drag any parameter from inactive window.
* When you push Cancel button in "Save/Save As..." dialog, save
menu disabled -> Fixed.

Save Protected.

Using QuickDraw GX, you can share a GeoPort for faxing purposes. I don't
think that will help you though, unless (it's just possible) the GX
solution also extends to Comms ToolBox-aware applications _and_ you have
a CTB-aware PPP.

There are two apparent solutions. The first one is a FKEY by the name of
Eye Saver. Eye Saver is available from
gopher://gopher.archive.umich.edu:11/mac/system.extensions/fkey/. I have
had no difficulty using Eye Saver on my machine, running 7.5.3 with way too
many extensions. Eye Saver does nothing but reverse the video color table
(the monitor must be in 2 , 4 or 8 bit grayscale) when one presses
command-shift-0 and leaves it be, so any application can change it back if
nescessary, thus avoiding some problems. Installing FKEYs can be a pain;
Michael Thibault suggested I search the HyperArchive for " 'fkey-trick' or
something similar" for the handy instructions on how to load FKEYs using a
font suitcase.

The second solution is far more expensive and flexible. inLARGE, from the
Flying Toaster People (Berkeley Sys.) is a $195 msrp control panel,
offering video inversion, magnification (incredibly fast, I might add--at
least 3x as fast as CloseView) and other features designed to aid vidually
impaired users. A working demo, which functions for 10 minutes per session,
is available from
ftp://access.berksys.com/pub/inlarge/in ... mo.sit.hqx. Alas, I could
not get inLARGE to operate reliably on my machine. I suspect an extension
conflict was to blame, but since I was conducting a quick test I didn't
have time to investigate.

Many thanks to the quick and concise responses which provided the above
information,

FWB Software's Hard Disk Toolkit disk formatter and driver includes such a
utility. I think it stores a snapshot of your startup, then next time,
loads that snapshot instead of the extensions themselves (providing you
haven't changed any of your extensions).

I haven't played with it because of frequent changes to my extensions, but
they say it cuts startup time about in half.

Hallo to everyone reading this!

I'm using the german version of system 7.5.3 on my 7200/75 and
experienced a little problem with apple's findfile program.
Drag-and-drop with found objects does not work, against all
announcements in the help menu.

If there's is anyone, who experienced the same, or much better, knows
how to overcome this problem, I would be very glad, if s/he could give
me a hint (Extension interference problems may be excluded).

Hi info-macers,

I would like to be able to the Save button in PageMaker 6.0., so it
is not possible to do a quick-save and thereby, overwriting the original
file. It is extremely important to maintain the original files unchanged.
We are importing some outside help, in order to get our catalog
out on time.

Is this possible, or is there a better solution?

Please respond to me directly, I will summarize for the digest.

Subject: What is my RAM speed?

I am trying to find the speed of my one 16MB simm
which is in my desktop Performa 5300.

As I understand it if you add RAM, I would like to
add another 16MB, you have to have the same speed
or faster.

The writing on the RAM as follows, does not help:

LG Semicon -------------------
EG11 072 | GMM 7324100ANS |
LG1 9526 | 60 5332N |
-------------------

There is no way a Performa would have 60ns RAM.
