The "Implosion Beep" begins with a surprising blast of pressure that
vacuums inwards siphoning a vapor-like essence with complete suction,
making for an exhilarating stereo experience of a System Alert Beep! The
sound is of paramount quality and is a great addition to anyone's sound
collection.

Subject: [*] CacheBGone II

CacheBGone_II is a small, freeware applescript written for the express
purpose of automatically getting rid of the following items:

1) Netscape "Cache" folder, "Global History" and "MagicCookie" files.
2) Microsoft Explorer "Cache" folder, "History.html" file.
3) Eudora "Eudora Log" file.

There are four different versions included, each providing a different
level of user interface and design. There are also links and
information concerning the MagicCookie issue.

This is the second version, to replace "CacheBGone!" originally posted
last year. There is much more documentation inside - pick it up (it's
a small download) and enjoy.

Requirements: System 7.5 or later, or 7.1 with a scriptable finder and
AppleScript installed.

May be included on an info-mac CDROM

Subject: [*] Cache Tool v1.0

Dear Users!

Here is Cache Tool, a small, simple utility which allows owners of
68(LC)040 macs to switch on and off the instruction and data caches
at will. This may allow some older applications to run without crashing.
System 7 included a Control Panel called Cache Switch which allows you
to switch off the (sometimes) incompatible caches, but you have to
restart the machine in order to make use of the change in cache state.

Switching off either one of the caches will degrade the performance of
your machine. Switching off both caches will seriously degrade the
performance of your machine. However, you may find that a troublesome
application only needs one (or both) of these caches to be switched
off at certain times (eg. on launch). This means you can still benefit
>From the speed of your '040 by switching the caches back on for most
of the time you are using the application.

Full details and instructions can be found from the Apple menu, via the
'About Cache Tool...' item.

Please note: Cache Tool will only be useful on '040 macs (LC475, LC630 &
Quadras upwards...) so it will probably not do anything if you have an
'030 mac (IIsi,IIci,LCIII,SE/30 etc.) and will probably crash if you
have anything lower.

If you find this useful, please send me a postcard or e-mail (addresses
in about box).

Subject: [*] ChordBook v1.4 -- An Interactive Chord Book for Guitar

ChordBook v1.4 -- An Interactive Chord Book for Guitar -- Fat Binary

This function is distributed as a Fat Binary--that is, this function runs
on both 68k based Mac's and native on PPC based Mac's.

ChordBook v1.4 provides chord lookup for guitar in standard tuning, and
additional chord processing for 39 non-standard guitar tunings. In the
standard tuning library, 23 chord types are supported with 3 or 4 different
fingerings each, depending upon the chord. To plot a chord diagram,
select the root of the chord from the Root menu, and the type of the chord
>From the Type menu. Then, diagram it with the Form 0,1,2,3 buttons from
the tool bar. Non-standard tunings do not contain these built-in chords,
but full use of the Neck Window functions are supported (see below).

In standard tuning, Form 0 chords are available for Major, Minor, Major
7th, and Dominant 7th chord forms and are generally the open or common
forms of the chord. Form 1 chords generally have the root on the 6th
string. Form 2 chords generally have the root on the 5th string, and Form
3 chords generally have the root on the 2nd and/or 5th string.

The Neck Window provides additional chord lookup functions. This window
allows the browsing of chord fingerings over the neck and has a
Name-that-Chord function which recognizes 40 different chords in standard
and non-standard tunings. These user-created chord voicings may then be
diagramed in the chord editor window.

This function requires either a 68k-based Macintosh with System 7.1 or
higher and a 68020, 68030, 68040, or a Power Macintosh with System 7.5 or
higher. A color monitor with at least 480 lines is highly recommended.
QuickTime with the QuickTime Musical Instruments extension is required for
sound output.

A mandolin version is also available.

it displays the current CPU speed in Megahertz. I wrote
this utility to aid me in developing MyBattery, which is

Requires a notebook Macintosh (Portable, PowerBook or
Duo) or PCI-Based Macintosh (7100, 7200, 7500, etc.)

Version 1.1.1 is now compatible with PCI-based Macintoshes.

Subject: [*] Drag-n-Drop-Email-as v 0.2

This AppleScript sends via e-mail the contents of text files dropped
on it. If a PPP connection is not in place when the Script runs, it
will open a connection and then close it when all the mail has been
sent. If there is already a PPP connection in place when the Script
runs, it will just send the mail dropped on it and leave the PPP
connection as if found it. The first line of you text file e-mail
messages must be the recipients full e-mail address followed by a
return. This will not be seen on the recieved message. The first time
the Script runs or if it is double-clicked, it will prompt you for
your complete e-mail address, which it will remember for subsequent
uses. This Script is designed to work for users with SMTP mail hosts
with names like "mail.wherever.com". Maybe it will work with other
sorts of set-ups, I don't know.

This file may be included in CD-ROM collections. See the README for more
info.

EquationSolver 0.8

Created by Miguel Frias

This program solves the solution of a squared matrix, represen-

ting several equations, using the Gauss method or the Cramer

method (this last method is slower on big matrixs).

Its step-by-step feature lets you see the evolution of the

matrix one step at a time, using the Gauss method. You can also

calculate determinants of matrixs and a enter numbers in several

ways like: -0.6 = -.6 = -6/10 = -,6 = -0,6

See the README file for more info. It is quite useful.

Subject: [*] File eXpress 1.1v0

=46ile eXpress 1.1v0 with "Comments" support for Package files has arrived!

=46ile eXpress allows you to send any file on your Mac to any other
machine running File eXpress just by "dropping" the item to send
on a mailbox icon in the Finder. File eXpress also creates a
single "Inbox" folder on your desktop where you'll be able to
quickly access items sent to you by other File eXpress users.

This release provides a drag-and-drop interface for asynchronous
document transfer services over BOTH AppleTalk and TCP/IP networks,
along with built in compression to optimize your file transfers.
This Shareware release is a fully functional version of File eXpress
system that supersedes 1.0v0 in addition to the "d" (delta) and
"b" (beta) release suites.

Changes since the 1.0v0 release include some minor bug fixes,
static TCP/IP port assignment to facilitate transfers through
approved Firewalls and a "Comments" field in the Packing Slip
dialog box that allows the user to attach a brief note to a
Package that will be displayed in the "Get Info..." comment
field of the delivered Package file. User's may now use the
=46inder's "Get Info=C9" command on any Package file in their
=46X*InBox to see who the Package is from and when it was sent,
in addition to any comments supplied by the sender.

Changes since Beta 2 include bug fixes, better networking with
Open Transport and a reduction of how often the "Register Now=C9"
option presents itself (ie. only once per reboot as originally
designed). We've also disabled the "Glowing Network Cables"
effect for incoming packages to keep the Finder from leaking
memory over time.

Changes since the initial Delta releases include a completely
revised user interface, the addition of the FX*Control Panel
to adjust FX*Engine settings, support for Open Transport 1.1,
leaner-meaner compression, and an enhanced FX*Engine which can
now be controlled via AppleScript without launching the FX*Packager.

Registered users of any of the Delta releases of File eXpress may
continue to use their registration codes. Many thanks for your Support!

suggestions to [email protected].

switching off or shut down. Comatose also has screen saver capability.
You can specify how many minutes before the screen dims and how many idle
minutes before drives spin down. Your computer will be able to wake up
with an incoming phone call, receive a fax and go back to sleep. Perfect
for using that old Mac sitting in the closet as a stand alone fax!

Key features:
- Auto Spin down/Screen Off
- Screen Saver & Energy Star Support
- Password protection

New in version 4.0:

Subject: [*] FreePPP Icon Update (Requires ResEdit)

What is it?
This is a quick set of resources to replace the icon resources in the
FreePPP 2.5 distribution. It requires ResEdit, which is available at
in the utilities directory.

I found the quality of the FreePPP small icon to be very ugly. So
these patches replace them with a more "styling" set wherever it
appears.

In the control strip, when you are connected, the phone will appear
with a cable attached, when you are disconnected, the phone cord will
not be shown. Sorry, its impossible at this time to do the same with
the System Menu.

This has not been made into a updater yet, due to the 3 or 4 different
releases of FreePPP 2.5, this distribution method assures 100%
compatibility with all 4 versions.

And as always, there's no promise it won't crash you, and I warranty
it for the amount you paid for it. Although theres no reason why it
should.

Subject: [*] Greek play

This Microsoft Works 2.0 document is an original five act Greek tragedy
written by Bob Corvello, a middle school social studies teacher from
Connecticut. Bob wrote this play a few years ago to help teach his
students about the drama of ancient Greece. A teacher friend of his from
the same school, Ted Roth, suggested that Bob upload his play as a
"shareware" play.

Of all the original shareware Greek plays written by middle social studies
teachers that I've seen, this one has got to be one of the best. The thing
I liked most about the play was the subtle humor that was interwoven into
the plot. Bob Corvello certainly has an amazing creative flair. Hopefully
we'll see more of his creative work on the Internet in the coming months.

Cheers,

Note: This Microsoft Works 2.0 file can be opened by just about any Mac
word processor, including ClarisWorks 2.x and above, and Microsoft Word,
too. I was going to upload this file as a plain text file, but there is a
lot of stylized text that is an integral part of reading the play.

Subject: [*] Kalk 1.0.8 Submission

Kalk is a simple RPN calculator, with a 20-level stack, that knows the
four basic operations plus some trig and log functions.

There are lots of desktop calculators out there. Why one more? I made
this one for my own personal use, because I wanted a RPN calculator,
but not that huge monsters I've seen around, almost complete
implementations of scientific HP machines. Those were great
calculators, but they fill almost the whole screen with tens of
buttons and switches. At the end of one week I usually was back to the
classic Apple calc, because it's small, fast, doesn't create auxiliary
files on the disk, and don't have big manuals.

So, the first goal on Kalk design was to make its window the same size
of Apple's. Then remove all digit buttons from the panel, making area
for more information (six of the 20 levels of the stack are shown).
The only buttons remaining are those used everytime and those that are
hard to remember without a label (Drop, Swap, Enter, Undo, Change
Sign, Clear). Digits are entered via keyboard, and the special
functions are grouped on the "Kalk" menu.

Using Kalk is very like doing simple math on a 28- or 48-series HP
calculator. As for the Apple calc, the numeric keypad of your keyboard
(hope you have one) is the best choice.

There is now a WWW home page about Kalk in general. If you're
interested, please look

http://cantor.lmf-di.puc-rio.br/Staff/T ... kHome.html

I've attached a HTML file to the Kalk release, so you can simply open
the "Visit Kalk Home.html" file in your WWW browser instead of typing
this string. The page also contains information about the ports of
Kalk to Unix and Windows.

Changes for this version:
1.0.8 Added inverse functions (arc cosine, arc sine, exp, and square)
to the Kalk menu; they are accessed by pressing the Option key while
selecting the menu. This feature is wanted by many current Kalk users,
as for the e-mail messages I've got from them. Released 960510.
Also little changes on the documentation and web page.

1.0.8a Recompiled in Metrowerks environment. Application file is now a bit
smaller.
FAT binary version available at the home page.

FREE COMPUTER PROGRAM HELPS WITH LEARNING LOUISIANA FRENCH

BOUTTE, LOUISIANA, U.S.A. -- Francais De Louisiane is a new computer
program to teach students about Louisiana French, and how it differs from
international French. This fun program is available free to the general
public.

The program uses multimedia sound, text and graphics to introduce
specific Louisiana French terms to the student, and then allows the
student to compare and contrast the terms with international French. A
built-in testing modules quizzes the student, and than reports a
percentage of correct answers at the end. While not a complete tutorial
in French, the program can supplement French training by reinforcing
concepts in international and Louisiana French.

The project, developed using an authoring tool known as "The Digital
Chisel," is designed to run on a Macintosh computer with a minimum of 4mb
of RAM and a hard disk. 8mb or more is recommended.

The project was developed by Gary Dauphin, with text from Patrick Gelhay
and David Marcantel. Earlene Broussard provided the voices used during
word pronounciations. Computer equipment needed to create the project
was loaned by Apple Computer, Inc.

Users can obtained the software free by using the Internet. The software

Subject: [*] MacNamer version 1.2.1a

This is a quick bug-fix release of the not-yet posted MacNamer. It fixes a
resource problem with users of System 7.5.2. Now all users of System 7.5.x
should be able to use it.

MacNamer is an applet that allows users of System 7.5.x to give
their Macs a machine name other than Macintosh, Power Macintosh, or Power
Book. These names are visible through the "About this Macintosh" window as
well as hard drive utilities and other various programs. Not very
life-affecting, but another little way to make your Mac your own.

Requires:

* System 7.5.x
* AppleScript 1.1
* Finder Scripting Extension
* Two "non-standard" OSAXen (included in installer)

Please refer to the README for more information about MacNamer. This
program is FREE to use for individuals. I would, however, liked to be
notified if it is put on a CD-ROM archive, and, if possible, sent a copy of
the CD-ROM. For comments, questions, and bug reports, send e-mail to

Subject: [A] Modem US->UK

re: SupraFAX Modem 288

I did exactly the same as Phillipe and had the same problems. To get the
modem to think it is a UK modem, use the supplied MicroPhone LT software.
If you look in the manual, under Custom Modem Configurations, it will tell
you how to set your modem for the UK: you need to issue an AT command,
AT*NC=016 (the Change Country Configuration command for the UK) and then
the AT&W command, which stores this in the modem's non-volatile memory.
After switching off and on, the modem will think it is true-blue British.
Your Modem init for Config PPP etc should be AT&F1

Supra US also kindly exchanged my US power supply for a UK unit - for free!

When you register the fax software from the UK, you may have to pretend
that you are calling from somewhere other than the UK as the number the
modem wants to dial begins with 010 whereas now 00 is the code for
international access.

I found the Supra people in the US most helpful, and am delighted with my
fax modem. I got no help whatsoever from UK Supra dealers - understandably,
I suppose, they didn't want to know as I hadn't bought the modem from them.

Many of the files on the UK Infor-mac mirror at src.doc.ic.ac.uk are in the

"Either this zip/gzip file is damaged or this is not a zip/gzip file."

I have no problems at all with files in the normal nnn.hqx format, but so
far I have been unable to convert a single nnn.hqx.gz file.

I'm sure there is something extremely simple that I am missing here, but I
have not been able to help myself by reading the respective help files etc,

Subject: Apple Remote Access and Telnet [Q]

I have a quick question that I would like to elicit some help with
regarding AppleTalk remote access and telnet connections. I recently
installed the latest version of ARA on my PowerMac 7500 (which runs
OpenTransport 1.1J and KanjiTalk 7.2.2.). I can connect from my 6200
series performa at home and can see the network at work without problem.
What I really want is to send IP packets (telnet, netscape etc.). My 7500
is connected to both LocalTalk (which has a FastPath to Ethernet gateway)
as well as directly to a 10 base T ethernet LAN. Naturally I usually run
the 7500 using the 10 base T connection. Some time ago I had using ARA 1.x
and connected to my Mac at work using localtalk and was able to use telnet
etc. at home as the fastpath connected to the localtalk lan would give an
IP address on demand. Now this doesn't work so I am seeking another
solution. (e.g. before -- when I just had a IIci, the ARA server was on
localtalk and MacTCP at home was on ARA only in the network control panel).
This worked fine. Now I looking for a simple solution that would let me
connect to the local area network 10 base T line (using my machine at work
IP connection and address) via ARA. Thanks for any help.

((I posted this message several days, but it doesnt seem to have landed on
the list yet (even though I got a positive reposting form the moderator).
So Ill try again:))

Thank you for all the answers regarding my question on the Geoport upgrade
for the Quadras (in InfoMac 119). Unfortunately they disagree quite a bit .
But heres some of them anyway.

Michael Schabert: "Apple's 28.8 version won't be ready for awhile and
that'll be ONLY for PowerMacs." (According to the June 96 edition of the
Mac Home)

Roy Pardi: "28.8 Geo upgrade will be PPC only. Apparently this is a 'known
thing"

Dr. Horst Simon: "There was recently a report in MacWeek, which stated
that the new software would be available by July."

Ryan - "Apple has indeed left the telephony consortium. It looks as though
they will release a 28.8 upgrade sometime this summer and then discontinue
it. I read it yesterday."

Roland Whitehead: "Tidbits reported that the 28.8 version was in the pipe
lione and would be delivered this summer."

I also attended some of the mac-newsgroups, and they are obviously as
confused as I - though a couple messages seemed promising. One claimed,
that Apple only dropped out of the Versit-company but didnt drop the
Geoport architecthure.

"Apple will be releasing new software and a new GeoPod this summer to go to
28.8. The new software will work with the old GeoPods, but will not get
all the way to 28.8. Probably 24.4. They have plans on the books to get
to 33.6 early next year," he wrote.

Another guy wrote this on the 22. may (96) : "With specific regards to the
Telecom adapter, Apple will have to produce 28.8 by September due to the
fact that Bandai will be shipping Telecom adapter add-ons to the @world
when it ships and they say the modem will be 28.8. BTW, this info (the
@world part) came direct from Bandai at E3 last week."
So well just have to wait and see, won`t we!

Lars
