Subject: [*] Babylon Book V.9 Season 2

This Newton book contains the complete text from the online Babylon 5
Episode Guide which can be found on Steven Grim's "Lurker's Guide to
Babylon 5" (http://www.hyperion.com/lurk/lurker.html). Originally, I
created one book which contained only the episode descriptions and a little
background information. I had to truncate the "jms speaks" sections due to
space and memory. The few letters I received about the guide asked me to
either put them back in or, at least, provide an alternate, larger version
for those with the memory and gas-powered Newtons.

I now have both, so I decided to recreate the guide from scratch. But, to
be fair, I'm splitting each season into a seperate book. Those of you with
20 meg flash-RAM cards can fill up a percentage with the entire episode
guides (currently three). Those of you with less can install the seasons
you want to read.

These guides are made without permission (or knowledge) from J. Michael
Straczynski. You should not have had to pay anything to get the books,
except for the minimal cost of obtaining them (such as download time, cost
of a CD-ROM, etc). Permission is granted to redistribute this in small or
large quantities. However, if you are going to mass distribute it (such as
on CD) then I just ask that you let me know and give me the option of
obtaining a copy at cost (or free). While the writing is not mine, I did
spend many hours compiling all the text, formatting, and indexing.

Future versions will possibly have more indexing and links. Perhaps it may
even mimic the Hyperion web site with graphics and such. Perhaps.

I would like to specifically give thanks to: Steven Grim for creating a
most enjoyable web site which spawned the text included in this book; those
who have written text that is included; Mr. Straczynski for providing me
with something enjoyable to watch and look forward to every Monday morning
at 12:50 AM (the only time B5 is on around here); Robert Hurt
([email protected]) for helping index the last version (.6); and Apple
Computer for providing me a copy of Newton Press, letting me buy a
Macintosh to compile the guide on (between crashes--hey, its a Performa),
and for developing the Newton which serves as a high-tech, albeit
expensive, way to keep the Babylon 5 Episode Guide with me at all times.

Comments are welcomed and encouraged. E-mail me: [email protected].
The more comments, the greater the chance that there will be a next version.

Subject: [*] Centaurian 1.2

Minimum requirements:
- Macintosh with 68030 processor or better (68040 or PPC recommended)
- System 7
- 640x480 256-color monitor (higher resolutions OK)

Centaurian is an arcade-style space game reminiscent of Bosconian, a
Midway-Namco arcade game from the early 1980's. Players battle through
enemy-controlled zones, destroying Centaurian bases and confronting a
variety of enemy ships and mines to reach the Centaurus colony. There are
a number of ship enhancements which can be found or purchased to assist in
the mission, and there are nine different bonus screens (Admiral Zorg's
Challenges) modeled after classic arcade games.

The game is shareware ($18). The unregistered game is fully functional
but limited to eight zones per game (selected from among the first 28 or so
zones). Registered users gain access to all 60 zones (including the final
confrontation with the Centaurian leader), load/save game features, secret
cheat codes, and the level editor.

Visit the Centaurian Home Page:

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~dob/centaurian.html

I can also send binhexed copies to people without web or ftp access.

There is an annotated screen shot at this site as well. If you have
questions or comments, please feel free to send me email at [email protected].

Subject: [*] Chinese Tiles 1.1

=A9Predrag Stanojevic, 1995-96

Chinese Tiles is a single-player game much like memory, you have
to match tiles and remove them. You might recognize the tiles from
the old chinese game Mah-Jongg.

There are many shareware versions of this game for various systems.
I've seen a couple of others for the mac as well.

When you start a new game 144 tiles are randomly placed. The object
of the game is to remove the tiles, one matching pair at the time
until all tiles are removed.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
1) System 7 (or greater)
2) 256 Colours (it works with 256 grayscale)

WHAT'S NEW IN 1.1 (1.02 --> 1.1)
=A5 Several layouts
=A5 Several tilesets, remade some of the old ones
=A5 You can choose between a background color or a background pattern
=A5 Save/Open/Recycle/Iconize/Peek menu options
=A5 Highscore list
=A5 Added a preference file
=A5 The application is now a FAT-binary
=A5 A few annoying errors has been removed

Subject: [*] Delete Web Caches

I've received a couple of comments that my AppleScript program, Delete Web
Caches, doesn't work correctly. I've tried it out on several Macs, and the
program has never bombed. However, the problem could be that I saved the
program as a stand-alone application or it somehow got corrupted in
transmission. In any case, I've attached the text script version of the
program, and I'd appreciate it if you could substitute this one for the
original I sent you.

Many thanks...

Subject: [*] Fracas 1.5.2, quality arcade action!

With its original 16-track stereo musical score, fast arcade action,
rendered artwork, and a 2-player option, Fracas promises to be a worthy
download! You're placed in a top-down view world against level after
level of orignial enemies of varying intellect and armament. Lots of
bonuses and surprises too. Earlier versions of Fracas were rated four
stars by The Shareware Review, and was reviewed favorably alongside
commercial products in a popular Macintosh game magazine.

Requires System 7 or better, sound manager 3.1 or better, 5 MB free RAM,
640x480 monitor resolution, 030 or higher CPU. Power Mac native. This
shareware version contains five levels (I personally can't play much
higher than that myself without cheating), and registered users may
unlock unlimited play for $15.

Subject: [*] French Kiss 2.0.1

French Kiss is graphics software that lets you work with graphics in a whole
new way. Instead of viewing a static picture, you can decide what you like
and create your own drag-and-drop, roll-your-own graphics! In a nutshell, you
can dress up cute anime girls in a variety of scenes, which can even include
sound and animation, and pick and choose what you enjoy.

If you're starting to enjoy French Kiss, and want to see some graphics,
you're going to need to find some Kiss data! If you have access to the World
Wide Web, try my French Kiss home page:

http://www.cs.csubak.edu/~jstiles/kiss/

From there, you should find extra French Kiss data, links to other French
Kiss archives, and plenty of other miscellanea, like information on building
your own Kiss data (experts only!).

This version fixes a few minor bugs from 2.0 and works better with Windows
Wkiss archives.

Ghent Percussion Font includes more than 90 percussion symbols for
instruments, mallets, and playing methods. The pictograph designs are
based on the 1974 conference on music notation held in Ghent, Belgium, as
well as other symbols in common usage.

This sample package includes a GIF image of Ghent Percussion Font as well
as a PostScript file of the keycaps and instrument name to pictograph

to the printer.) Ordering information is included in a ReadMe file.

A separate PDF preview file for use with Adobe Acrobat may be downloaded
separately. See Ghent_Font_PDF_Preview.hqx.

Ghent Percussion Font is available for Macintosh, Windows, NeXTStep, and

Subject: [*] GLMStat 2.0.0

GLMStat is a statistical program for analysing generalised linear models.
It provides a macintosh interface but otherwise operates in a similar
fashion to GLIM but with less features (most of which you probably won't
miss). Features of GLMStat are
- spreadsheet style data entry
- Normal, Poisson, Binomial and Gamma models with appropriate links and
specification of convergence and aliasing parameters
- Scatter and Residual plots
- Output of deviance, parameter estimates, residuals and parameter
correlations
- Saving of data files complete with all model specifications.
- printing of data, graph and results.
- Online Help (under the apple menu) and a brief User Manual.
- includes example data files for most examples in two of the texts.

The programme is shareware with a fee of $AUD30 for individual copies or
$AUD150 or $US110 for site licences. ($1AUD is approximately $US0.78). Further
details in the "Read Me" file.
Unregistered copies are fully functional but will expire at the end
of 1997.

Changes in this version are
- a PowerPC version
- many changes so as to compile for PowerPC
- uses new Apple floating point so internal calculations now in
double precision rather than extended
- makes better use of System 7 features and conformance to Apples
guidelines
- remembers which type of Report file you used last
- wider and better Define dialog
- fixed bug which caused large (>8000 points) graphs to not display
- 68K version now requires at least System 7

Note: I will be unavailable for most of July 1996.

Subject: [*] HTML Markdown 2.0

Have you ever wanted to spell check your web pages and had your word
processor choke on all the HTML? Ever needed a quick printout of your
site without all the graphics? Ever wanted to start a page over, but
retain all the content? Ever wanted a list of all the URL's in all your
pages so you can check your links and map out your site?

HTML Markdown will help you with all of these tasks. At its simplest
level, HTML Markdown is an HTML to TEXT converter. However, it is really
much more than that. Version 2.0 has many enhancements that make it an
essential tool for any webmaster.

In addition to stripping out HTML, HTML Markdown can optionally convert
's to normal-looking lists, 's to hard breaks, and 's to
dashed lines. The built-in URL Spitter can automatically create a "spit
file" which contains all of the links from all of the files that you
dropped onto the HTML Markdown icon -- sorted by filename! Now you can
easily map out your site, find relative links, and find expired links.

HTML Markdown is perfect for spell-checking. Just drop your page onto the
icon, and spell check the resulting text file! No need to keep clicking
"Skip" in the spell checker! It's also great for starting over. If you
want to change the look of your site, just run it through HTML Markdown.
You still have the content, but you're now ready to begin adding the
style!

HTML Markdown 2.0 is shareware. A single user license is $10 and may be
purchased by using the included "KlepHacks Register" program. Questions
and comments are welcome to [email protected]

Subject: [*] Internet Logger v. 2.0 (fr)

This release is a french language version.

This is the French language version of Internet Logger, a utility application
allows you to keep track of how much time you spend on your internet accounts.
It requires System 7 or later. It can also be used to track long distance
telephone use or to track time spent on client accounts. First, among many
other potential uses, Internet Logger will provide a convenient means to fully
document your internet connections, including:

* Tracking session times and cumulative use time by day and month.
* Ability to enter complex session rate structures and automatically estimate
session and cumulative costs by day or month.
* Ability to count down time remaining on either prepaid hours or hours
charged
at a flate rate.
* Optional Log file documenting session and cumulative times and estimated
costs.
* Optionally compute session times by rounding up to the nearest minute. Some
online services seem to compute times this way. You can check it yourself.
* Allows automatic connection via PPP, SLIP, or operation as a manual timer.
* Allows multiple timers with individual settings. You can keep track of
use of
multiple providers conveniently. Each can have it's own log file.
* Compatibility with Open Transport when used with FreePPP.

Internet Logger requires System 7.0 or later.

Timers created with version 1.x are not compatible with version 2.0. Do not
try to open Timers created with version 1.x. Instead, keep version 2.0 in
its own folder and create new timers using version 2.0. You may continue to
use v. 1.x simultaneously if you need to time two things at once.

Thank you,
Eric Preston

Version 1.1, June 1996

New in version 1.1
- the name of a file/folder to open can be specified either as an
ASCII C string, or as a FSSpec
- included (and shown off) code to convert FSSpec to the full path name
(and how it can be used to figure out the full path name to the
system folder and the stuff within)
- now works under CW9 (the previous version was compiled with
Symantec C++ 6.0)

What: utility C++ functions/classes for a few very common Mac chores

Highlights:
- posting of synchronous _and_ asynchronous notifications
- printf() in an alert box

- do_well() macro to make sure a "system call" went well
- handling of mandatory Apple Events: OpenApplication,
{Open|Print}Document, Quit:

a trick of relaying AppleEvents to (abstract) C++ classes for processing
- template of a generic drop box: an application that handles files dropped

programming support, environment

Note: The environment is used in most of my Mac software (incl. the one
submitted to the Info-Mac)
Language: C++, CodeWarrior9
System: System 7.1 - 7.5.3, binaries are made for a PowerMac.

Version 2.0, June 1996

New in version 2.0
- renamed myenv.* into mymenv.* to avoid name conflicts with my (UNIX)
C++ environment
- renamed message()/_error() into alert()/_die() for the same reason:
the former (declared in my advanced C++ i/o package) write into a
SIOUX console; the latter functions display an alert
- "magic" conversion from C to Pascal string
- Handling of Mandatory Apple Events OpenApplication, {Open|Print}Document,
Quit
- Now works under CW9 (the previous version was compiled with Symantec
C++ 6.0)

Subject: [*] Photoshop De-Aggravator v2 for OneClick

This new version replaces the earlier file photoshop-de-aggravator.hqx.
Improvements in the new version include a more attractive palette and
the ability to turn the palette on and off.

Ever noticed that certain of Photoshop's keyboard shortcuts for tools in
its floating tool palette are a wee bit inconsistent? M selects Marquee
unless Marquee's already selected, in which case it toggles Marquee
between rectangular and oval. Three other tools are similarly afflicted.
This drove me nuts so I used OneClick to do something about it. With
the De-Aggravator palette installed, these keys will act just like the
others. A letter by itself always selects a tool without changing its
mode; Shift plus a letter switches the modes of tools that can be
switched.

Point Recorder is a program to record successive mouse coordinate at

picture, so a lot of technical and scientific use are possible.
Following with the mouse an element of a motion picture on the screen
using Point Recorder you can transform a trajectory in the x,y
successive position in the time. Interval time is customizable. Option
to get coordinate only if they are changing.

Result can be saved on disk as text. No limit on the number of
successive recordable coordinate. The only limit is the total RAM of
the Mac. Point Recorder use a C efficient algorithm, is fast and
small, getting 60 point/sec is no a problem on a enough fast Mac.

Subject: [*] Prima Materia v0.1.0 Public Beta

Prima Materia is an action arcade game based on video game classics Arkanoid
and
Breakout. The basic object of the game is to keep the ball bouncing around the
playfield, using your paddle to prevent it from falling into the void at the
bottom of the screen. Prima also supports some goody power ups including fast
balls, slow balls, a sticky paddle, a laser paddle, a large paddle, a small
paddle, and a couple other random things. Prima also includes 32 different
levels with colorful background textures, and digitized sound and music.

Current System Requirements:
68040 or PowerPC processor recommended
System 7.0 or higher required
Sound Manager 3.0 recommended
640x480 with 256 colors screen required
4.5 megs free RAM required

Prima is not yet PowerPC native, but should run fine on a PowerPC.

Sorry about the resource requirements, I know they're a little ridiculous (this
is basically Breakout for crying out loud) and I'll try to pare them down in
future versions.

Prima Materia is freeware. Commercial distribution of this beta version is
prohibited. See the included Read Me file for details.

This is a beta version but it is functional and has been tested on a number of
Macs. There are no serious bugs that I know of, and I am basically releasing
it
now to see if there is any interest in having it developed further. I
would like
to expand the feature set, optimize the game play, and reduce the resource
requirements in future releases, but this version is definitely a playable
on its
own. Apologies to all those who are tired of public betas... what can I say,
it's free...

Subject: [*] Skittles 1.0.4--the hottest action/puzzle game!

Skittles is the hottest action-puzzle game for Macintosh! It's
two-player addictive strategy, with lightning-quick attacks to punish your
opponent and a plethora of intelligent computer enemies. It has been called
"the best shareware game I've ever played," "fantastic," and "worth every
penny" by the many registered users. Try Skittles today!

WHAT IS IT?

Skittles is an action/puzzle game for one or two players! You control
genetically altered Skittles which fall from the sky, trying to keep them
>From stacking up to the top of the screen.

The Skittles engineers have recently been experimenting with new flavors
and colors. One of the more psychopathic scientists decided to alter the
Skittles' formulas through genetic mutation. The first test batch was
produced, and a teeming, jiggly mass of coagulated, living Skittles appeared.
They quickly began to multiply and pile up into large groups. As the
scientists fled screaming from the building, a few clever minds noticed that
the Skittles were highly reactive. When four of the same type of Skittle
touched, they would instantly vaporize.

There's only one hope left for the Skittles plant, its workers, and the
small city that they inhabit. Vaporize the Skittles before they run rampant
and destroy everything in their path! You are the only hope left before they
crush the entire city.

Subject: [*] SNOOD v.1.0 Puzzle game

Minimum requirements:

Mac with 68030 or newer processor
System 7
Screen size of 640x480 or greater
256-color monitor

Snood is a new puzzle game for Macintosh that will test your intellect
rather than your reflexes. Your goal is to free all of the trapped Snoods
by launching other Snoods at them. If you connect three or more Snoods,
they will transport away. If that leaves any Snoods not connected to the
top of the playfield, they will fall to safety. Don't take too long,
though. Every Snood you launch increases the Danger Level. When the gague
fills up, the Snoods will shift downward. If the Snoods reach you, the
game is over.

Snood includes the following features:

* Set your own pace! There is no time limit in Snood, so you can play
as quickly or as patiently as you wish.
* Simple controls! You only need the mouse to play. Move it left and
right to aim your launcher, and click to launch your Snood.
* Multiple difficulty settings! Pick the level that suits your skill,
from Child to Evil. Registered users can even design their own custom
difficulty settings. Each difficulty level maintains its own high
score list and statistics, too.
* Snood is background-friendly! You can play Snood as a break while
you work or while printing, and background functions on your Mac
will still operate.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR PARENTS: Snood is a good game for children. The game is
non-violent and non-confrontational, and children can play at their own
pace. It develops several basic skills, including matching, calculation of
angles, and simple strategic assessment and problem solving. It does not
require reading, and the controls are very simple. The Child difficulty
level is easy enough for even young children.

Snood is shareware. The unregistered game is fully functional except for
the custom difficulty settings. If you register the game, I'll send you a
code which lets you:

* Design your own custom difficulty settings
* Not hear "Please!" when you start up
* Get Snood updates at no cost
* Feel good about yourself for supporting the shareware concept

Subject: [*] Versioneer 1.1

** What is Versioneer?
Versioneer is an application that makes it convenient to edit the 'vers' ID 1
(and now 2) resource of a file. It's also AppleScript-able, so you can write
scripts that bulk-change the version of a large number of files.

** Why Versioneer?
Some of you are wondering "What's the 'vers' ID 1 resource and why would
I care?" A good question. The 'vers' ID 1 resource of a file is what the
Finder uses to display version information for a file. When you do a "Get
Info" on a file, the last field before the "Comments" field is the
"Version" field, and the 'vers' ID 1 tells the Finder what to put there.
Also, if you use "version" in your Finder views, the 'vers' ID 1
resource tells the Finder what string to display in the Finder windows
as well.

Versioneer 1.1 adds the ability to edit 'vers' ID 2 resources
as well, which tells the Finder what text to display right underneath
the file name in the Get Info window.

Everyone will experience a memory leak from time to time, it's
become a fact of life - which Copland, I believe, should address. I've
been experiencing such a leak after quitting Fetch 3.01. Presently though,
one known major cause of consistent memory leaks is Open Transport (which I
do not use on my 660) - are you running OT or have you reverted to Classic
Appletalk? In any case, the only way to retrieve that lost memory is a
restart. (Mac OS Purge is efficient at retrieving system memory, but not
memory lost after quitting some applications).

BTW, the 8100 is not on the list of Macs that Apple recommends
installing 7.5.3. revision 2. What effect that may have, if any, I cannot
say.

I would believe so. While Finder and disk functions are generally
speedier with 7.5.3, one of the assets of Speed Doubler (more advantageous
to the original PowerMacs) and not part of the system update is the speed
increase attributed to 68k emulation. If you run any non-native software

I have tried turning off all of my extensions except system 7.5.2, the
Global Village extensions and Teleport Control Panel but I still get the
same results. I have also clean installed my system, reinitialized my
system, zapped all of my PRAM, checked for viruses but still cannot get my
fax modem to work consistently.

After calling Global Village about the problems I have been encountering,
I was first informed that the Teleport 2.5.3 software conflicted with the
PCI macs and therefore was told to upgrade to 2.5.6. Upon receiving Global
Fax software 2.5.5 and a new 2.5.6 updater, I followed the instructions for
a "clean" install.

After installation, I was able to send a fax and operate my modem a couple
of times (check my email). On subsequent fax and modem tries I began
experiencing the exact same problems I was having before the updates. That
is: faxes hanging on the "connection" status, PPP 2.0.1 hanging on
"establishment." and Zterm not connecting. Then, after about a day of
zapping prams and rebuilding desktops, the fax/modem started working again
for no apparent reason. It continued to work fine for a couple of weeks
until it reverted back to its old ways without warning. This all occurred
while no conscious changes were made to the system configuration,
extensions or hardware setup.

I called Global Village once again for any helpful advice but was told to
retry turning off all unnecessary extensions and also to clean install my
fax software. This time consuming inconvenience has worked sporadically at
best.

At first I thought the problem was caused by a software conflict with some
new software that I installed. But now, I am at a loss for an
explanation. Calls to the US from Japan aren't very cheap and I cannot keep
checking my Email on a friends system. I have spent way too much time and
energy trying to resolve this problem. Besides I have started to think that
it is more cost effective to buy a new modem.

Because the modem initially worked after installing the updaters, I am
assuming the hardware itself is OK. Does anybody have any suggestions
before I go out and buy a different modem?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Hiroshi

Does anyone know Tom Williams? He is a young guy who invents and
programs games for the Macintash. He used to work for Apple Computers
in Sunnyvale, CA. but moved back to Canada the last I heard.

If anyone knows Tom Williams or how i can get ahold of him, please let
me know.

Thanks...

Subject: tuning MacPPP modem init string?

If this message is being posted in the least appropriate place, please
forgive me and direct me to the correct place. Thanks.

I am using a IIvx, System 7.5.3, Open Transport, MacPPP 2.5, and a 14.4K
modem. I have set the Baud Rate to 57,600.

Why is it that when transferring files I only eek out slightly less than
600 bytes/sec? I have used the same modem on other (ok, ok, intel - but not
Windows!) computers with transfer ratios over 1K/sec.

I think it might be my modem initialization string (which is currently
basically empty), but I don't know where to look for what the best one
should be. Any suggestions? I just took some notes down from the ZTerm
online manual (chapter 6) and I'm gonna go back and see if/what my ISP
documentation says, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any great ideas.

Oh, and where might I find any kind of documentation on all the options in
MacPPP (Authentication, LCP and IPCP Options)?
