Subject: (Q) - No output view with 4th Dimension

Hi all,
I was going through the quick start tutorials for 4th Dimension 3.0.1 and
ran into a problem with the Report section. The tutorial recommend I use
print preview to view the output so I don't use up any paper. So I did
it. I worked the first time, but when I continued to the next section and
tried to preview it, I got some kind of LaserWriter error and a bomb
(sorry, I didn't write the error number down.) Now I don't see and data
in the output view. The title bar of the view shows 59 of 59 records.

Thanks in advance and please respond directly if possible.

Subject: [C] Why is Microsoft Word so S-L-O-W on Mac?

Don't you see a pattern there? Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are all
Microsoft products. Microsoft is the maker of Windows, probably the most
commonly used operating system in PCs and a fierce competitor to the Mac
operating system in the graphical user interface war. So, why is Microsoft
Word so S-L-O-W on the Mac? Simple. Microsoft made it that way to convince
people to switch to Windows. Therefore, Apple is *not* the one to be blamed
for these problems nor the one who should "openly address" them. Microsoft
is.

* Not only are these programs incredibly slow on any Mac, they are

My knowledge of AppleScript is zilch, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell
me if the following is possible (and if so, how to do it).

I have a folder on my hard disk which contains stuff (newly created text
files) which I usually copy to a floppy to take home with me. The problem
is that I tend to forget to check the folder before shutting down. Is there
a way to have an AppleScript run at shutdown which checks the status of the
folder's contents and alerts me if it not empty?

Thanks in advance

Subject: CD and floppy drive failure

I have a Macintosh 6100CD Performa model, system 7.5, 24 MB RAM, 500 MB
hard drive. It is a year and two months old, two months past warranty, of
course, now that I am having trouble. A few days ago my usually lightening
quick CD slowed down, considerably. It can take up to four minutes for the
CD to show a disk icon, open a window, and show the icons of the disk
contents. And now when I use floppies, I get a message saying the
application cannot be opened because of a disk error. The hard drive seems
to be working fine.

I have cleaned dust from everything, reconnected all cables, clean
reinstalled all system software, tossed most preferences, used first aid to
check my hard disk, and checked the SCSI. Everything seems to check out. I
don't know what else to check or why these two drives are messed up. I will
be glad to take suggestions at .

Many of y'all (second person plural, Southern) have mostly correctly
said that EXE files are pretty much flat useless in Mac's native mode.

That is not always the case.

I attended an international conference in May. The registration packet
included two Wintel floppies with copies of the papers to be presented.
They were mostly EXE files. But of a special kind. They were self-
extracting ZIP archives.

Stuffit Expander handled those EXE files beautifully.

The results were a bunch of Wintel WP files that my MacLink Translators
had no trouble bringing into one of my Mac-side WP programs.

Yes, I continue to be impressed with young Raymond Lau's Stuffit products.

Subject: Help Needed

The other day, when starting up my Mac, I was greeted by the keyboard
making "thunk" sounds when I struck a key. The sound was electronically
generated and the key, however, was nonfunctional. Nothing happened via
the keyboard, although I could start up the Mac in the usual way.

In attempting to find out what was going on, I booted up with the
extensions OFF, and lo and behold, the keyboard was functional again...
no thunking sounds. However, applications that needed the extensions
were not functional.

I then proceeded to try and identify the culprit extension by moving
small groups of extension files into an "Extensions Disabled" folder and
restarting, to see if the thunking continued. It did...even with all
extensions moved into the Extensions Disabled folder!

Anybody got some ideas on what the cause of my problem might be?

All thoughts are appreciated and will be tried...

Please respond directly via e-mail.

Netscape requires an 020 processor and will not run on a MacPlus.
For the web, your best bet is probably a small program called MacWeb.

You definitely need a recent, SCSI Manager 4.3 driver. I've no
information on APS
(including what its latest version is), but FWB has a good reputation for
third party formatters.

Pat Ellis

*BTW, have you tried using the patched Apple HD SC Setup AFTER
formatting with Disk manager?
Using the patch prior to DM didn't work for me either. Using reverse
logic, I used DM, then used the
patch and it worked.

I know Speed Doubler has impressive results running on the original
NuBus PowerMacs.
What difference it will have on the 7200 (if any), I'm not sure. If you
are using System 7.5.3
revision 2 the difference may be negliable. On the other hand, extra RAM
and a level 2 cache,
will definitely increase the overall performance of your Mac.

This is a non-answer and echo of the plea above. I have the same
serial-port-shortage problem on my PM8100. I tried a 1989-vintage Apple
serial NuBus card with a "Hydra" multi-connector cable, previously used
by a MacX25 server running on a IIci. The hydra cable's DB-25 connectors
are the right shape for a US Robotics Sportster modem's serial port,
which would solve my problem nicely if I could get it to work, but I've
been unable to get any of my software to recognise the card's existence.
So -- don't waste your time with one of these cards, in the unlikely
event that you come across one, unless you're also running MacX25 Admin,
which seems to be the only software in creation that can interface with
it. And to repeat the original request: what can Leon and I do?

Consider the Hurdler or Hustler from Creative Solutions in Baltimore (?).
They create 2-4 additional ports (up to 230kbps) across the SCSI port.
Don't have one yet, but I've heard good things about them. Hope this
helps. Cheers!

I don't see where Apple can do anything about these speed problems. Apple
wrote none of the software you mention, so why should they be the ones to
"openly address the problems?" I'd direct my complaints to Microsoft (who
is known for monstrous, slow programs) and the other software authors.

Had the same problem on two machines (7100 and PowerCenter 120) both with
OT loaded. The problem seems to be related to corrupted PPP pref file,
but try the following shotgun approach:

1) Trash all PPP related files (FreePPP, prefs files, whatever) and the
MacTCP DNR file.
2) Reboot
3) Install FreePPP 1.0.5 (if you don't have it, get it - IMHO the most
reliable version.)
4) Enter relevant info into TCP/IP. You might also want to go under
options and UNcheck the box for load only when needed.
5) Enter your provided info into ConfigPPP
6) Cross your fingers and other available extremeties and try to connect.

Ken:
I've had my 5300 attached to my zip disk with great success. I've
also used it while attached to my 6100 at home via SCSI.

Yes, you do need a docking adapter, but luckily you can get one adapter that
serves as both a docking adapter and a standard SCSI adapter. I don't
remember
where I got mine, but look for something that looks like a standard
SCSI-HDI30
adapter, except it has a small switch on the side. The switch has labels
like
"DOCK" and "SCSI" if I'm not mistaken.

I believe that if you are docking your PowerBook as a hard drive, you need
to turn it on first, before the host computer.

By the way, you should be able to boot 7.5 from your Disk Tools disk that
came as a disk image on your hard drive. I believe you can also request one
directly from Apple.

Also, it sounds like you were intending to reinstall the system software on
your PowerBook while it was docked to your IIsi. I believe this will not
work
because the installer will see that the host computer is a IIsi, and will
install software appropriate for a IIsi. It all depends on what computer is
actually running the system software during the installation.

That's all for now.

PortShare Pro will do what you want. See http:www.stalker.com for info. I
have no connection with them except as a satisfied customer. Cheers!

To me, it sounds like if your given name server (in OT) is wrong. If you
don't get any better suggestions, ask you provider what name server(s) to
use.

Subject: WHY IS WORD SO S-L-O-W...

Re: Why is Microsoft Word so S-L-O-W on Mac?

Sorry Erkko, but you seem to be missing the point, the fact that Word
runs so slow on your Mac is a problem you should complain to Microsoft
about. The other apps you mention are all Microsoft products, isn't
somebody trying to tell you something] ;-)

There are hundreds of applications available for the Mac, a lot of them
are more resource hungry than Word, and yet they manage to run at
decent speeds. So why do you automatically think your system is at
fault.

This is not a Microsoft-Bill is the anti-christ type rant, I just get
annoyed when people automatically blame their system for their
problems. Another 'classic' is... my system keeps crashing when I use
the Beta version of.. etc etc.

What do you expect?
