Awwww yeah. Sit back and take a sip as you relax at the Mac with the new
Jaaazzz beep from Clixsounds. It's a smoooooth beep with a bit of soul,
and sounds cooool on any Mac lookin' to groove.

The Jaaazzz beep has a blues feel to it, as it is a quick but smooth
melody from an alto saxaphone. It sounds great through stereo speakers,
or just your plain Mac speaker. It is available in both 16-bit/44kHz and
8-bit/22kHz stereo and can be downloaded from the Clixsounds WWW site,

Subject: [*] ConvertMachine 1.0.4

This version fixes a slow memory leak.

ConvertMachine is a powerful sound file conversion program. Any (most)
audio files dropped onto the application are converted to AIFF, AU or
WAVE format in either mono or stereo, with any of a number of
compressions and arbitrary sampling rates. It is ideal to convert audio
files to formats commonly used on the web. It allows easy access to
Audio CD tracks and QuickTime Movie audio tracks. It will interface
seemlessly with SoundMachine. It requires QuickTime 2.1 and Sound
Manager 3.1 or better.

Uses and Features:

* Configure ConvertMachine to any of five standard formats (AIFF/AIFC,
AU, WAVE, MacOS Finder sound files, and QuickTime Audio); to either
mono or stereo; and to an arbitrary sampling rate and drop any format
sound file onto its icon and, voila, you get it copied to the required
form.

For example, if you had a QuickTime movie with an interesting sound
track (say a stereo IMA4 compressed 44.1kHz sample rate format), then
drop it onto the configured ConvertMachine application icon and you get
a Web standard AU file created (mono, mu-law 8kHz files).

(Behind the scenes, and you don't need to worry about this,
ConvertMachine does the following: extracts and mixes together multiple
(possibly stereo) QuickTime audio tracks; decompresses the sound;
converts the rate to 8kHz, applies mu-law compression, then slinks away
into a corner obediently waiting for its next job.)

Drag and Drop Finder Sound files (sfil), AIFF files, WAVE files and AU
files also.

* Mix stereo sounds down to mono.
* Compress Audio CD tracks (44.1kHz, stereo) using IMA 4:1 and get the
same quality sound reproduction with a quarter of the disk space.
* Decompress sound files.
* Compress sound files.
* Resample sounds.
* ConvertMachine replaces the old Ulaw and Resample programs of mine.
* Automatic launch and play with SoundMachine.
* Needs Sound Manager 3.1 and QuickTime 2.1 (standard in System 7.5.3).

Subject: [*] Hubert's 2D/3D Macintosh Icons 2.0

**** NEW IN THIS RELEASE: THE POWERBOOKS ARE HERE! ****

- Permission IS HEREBY GIVEN to include this archive on any CD-ROM or
other commercial package, provided that:
1) you inform me via e-mail ([email protected]) of your intent to do so;
2) the icons and resources within are not altered in any way;
3) all components (readme files, icons, resources) remain with the
archive.

Included in this icon archive are:
- A ResEdit resource containing ics#, ics4, ics8, ICN#, icl4, and icl8
resources of every Mac "form factor" that have ever been released, with
the exception of the Mac Portable and the clones.
- A folder containing the exact same icons as the resource file, ready
for immediate copy-and-paste to your hard drive. These icons have been
placed in convenient "series" folders (ie PowerMacs, PowerBooks, etc).
- Simpletext Read-only files: General info and Release History.

What distinguishes Hubert's 2D/3D Mac Icons from other Mac computer
icon archives is that almost every single variation of Mac form factors
has been included. Small variations in Mac cases, such as the "lip"
found on all manual- inject disk drive- equipped Macs, or a slight
remold of the disk drive/ CD areas are included. For instance, the
Quadra 800 icon set has 8 variations, including 4 different optional
drive (CD/ DAT) configurations. Whatever Mac you have, in whatever
configuration, you should be able to find a matching icon. Also, these
icons look great no matter *what* depth monitor you have (except BW AND
small icon, in most cases)

These two music file works with the lastest version (2) of Tetris Max.
"Delta Original" is the same music that played with the original release of
Tetris Max; I've only changed the file format. "Tetris Cascade" I pieced
together from some sounds that I think came with it. I tried to make it
unrepetative, but you can judge it as you like.
Authoring information is unavailable, but I'm pretty sure there isn't any
problem since the music was released publically with the first version.
I also have other files that weren't included in the most recent package,
but I'm not including it because the author might have a reason for leaving
them out. I've changed all the names anyhow (to reflect the style of the
music) and this might be bothersome for people who already have them.

Subject: APS or other post-PlainTalk Microphone?

Having bought an APS drive a while back, I get APS technology catalogs
& the latest advertises a microphone to use instead of the PlainTalk
and claims to be a substantially better mike. God knows that wouldn't
take much.

I'd like one I could use for music recording, actually. I've been
looking at the idea of plugging a microphone into my component music
system amp then running cable / adapters to the sound-in port...the
amp necessary because of most microphones not producing the boosted
signal the Mac wants (or so I am told?). But I've also had people
tell me things about "pre-amps" and leave me wondering at this ugly
world of analog electronic equipment (don't you just hate shopping
for things you know nothing about!??) and certainly it would be most
tempting to be able to just plug in a microphone designed to replace
the PlainTalk microphone and be ready to record live sound. (a long
long cord would help a lot). I've always thought that digital sound
editing would be a Mac sort of thing anyway.

But then there's the software question. As far as I can tell, there is
as of yet no software for sound as powerful and intuitive as Photoshop
is for images. I'd like a sonic "magic wand tool" that would select
within the same soundfile all similar occurrences of a pitch plus
amplitude already selected as a starting point. I'd like a display
that breaks up the soundfile into a 4-D diagram with pitch one di-
mension, intensity (amplitude) another, a third dimention that would
be user-configurable from a variety of menu-selectable possibilities
such as sibilance or crackliness or squareness of isolated waveshape
(and preferably a good plug-in market there) and, for the 4th dimension
(passage of time) have the whole diagram presented as a QuickTime movie
and use QT as its native file format. Set the tolerance on the magic
wand tool and click on a spectrum of sound and grab the auditory element
rather than just the whole sound file or a piece of time within it and
THEN go to your filters or copy or clear! Instead most sound applications
are as clumsy dealing with sound as an image program would be if it only
gave you a choice of x-y coordinates and a readout of RGB values, and only
rendered a viewable bitmap in some other mode quite apart from the one in
which you do your editing! Am I being unreasonable, or am I (oh please)
describing something that happens to be out there and I'm just too far out
of the loop to recognize it by its commercial description?

But even a half-decent sound-recording program and a decent mike oughta
allow me to play the piano jamming at random and select the parts that came
out well and discard the rest and play out to amp ==> cassette recorder,
even without 21st century editing software. So a good cheap mike system
would be nice.

I'm in the market for an ergonomic keyboard with a builtin pointer or

I checked on they listed a "NuForm ergonomic w
pointer" and a "NuForm ergonomic with trackpad." Are these similar?
Older? Newer?

Does anyone have good pricing? ISN's price is great ($75), but I'm not
sure exactly what these models of keyboards are (ISN doesn't have product

Strangely, MacMall's web rpices is more than $2 higher than the price in
the catalog for the non-pointer model and they don't even list the pointer

Apple File Exchange is built into the operating system!
7.5.3 gives you the option of formatting a diskette as a DOS one!
Simply finder copy eg. drag your mac files to that diskette. See, no work

I don't see where Apple can do anything about these speed problems. Apple
wrote none of the software you mention, so why should they be the ones to
"openly address the problems?" I'd direct my complaints to Microsoft (who
is known for monstrous, slow programs) and the other software authors.

Chris
[email protected]
This is addressed to Chris as the answer is smarting from some sort of
Microsoft angst that is really unhelpful to Errko and to the rest of the
Mac community. Sure, we love Macs but don't take it personally that
Microsoft has been better at marketing, promotion and so forth. If you
want to be helpful... help with a solution. The solution as I understand
it is to search for upgrades to the applications at the homepage for each
of these companies first. Second, I disagree with Chris on the point that
it is not Apple's responsibility. It is the responsisbility of both
companies to make things work well and smoothly. Apple had in the past
left developers to pretty much figure it all out on their own. They were
put into the unenviable role of competing with their own "Mother" so to
speak in the form of Claris Corp. I understand that this is behind the
company now...I do hope so. I also have been led to believe that Microsoft
for one would be most unhappy to see Apple products lose further sales and
market share as it would put them in the dangerous position of being
broken up by Teddy Roosevelt's anti-trust legislative traditions so
certainly it is to both concerns that they would (and have) addressed the
situation wtih Word. You can easily obtain an upgrade. I would suggest
that all of us train our annoyance and defensiveness not to dumping on the
developers (Microsoft is one of our developers, folks) but to helping spread
the word about how Macs are inherently more intuitive and trouble free, fun
to use and productive. Best to find a solution than to find an excuse...

If you are not using Apple's Plaintalk microphone then you may want
to look into obtaining one. Your 7100/66's audio/mic input is a line-level
jack. The Plaintalk microphone use a pre-amplifier (that is where the
extra long plug comes into play) when recording. A normal microphone is
not capable of this without additional help (i.e. pre-amplifier, mixer
etc...)

error -39 means "end of file", which really means a file is corrupted and
can't be used. I've never been able to fix a file with -39 error, but would
surely like to know how - guess you'd have to use Nortons Disk Editor?

Anyway, if you trash the "Internet Preferences" file in your preferences

In
Nescape, go to: 'Options -> Network Preferences -> Protocols.' There is a check

With MacTCP all of my internet applications seem to work.
I have been using MacTCP 2.0.6 and have tried both MacPPP 2.5

not indicate that the PPP link is UP. Since it does not recognize
that it is UP it won't let me close it and if the link goes down I

With Open Transport I get a System Error Type 10 with most, if not all,

Can you suggest any solutions to these problems?

Subject: Stuffit Expander - I/O Error bad media

Hi Info-Mac Folks:

This one is long (I apologize). I am experiencing a failure in
Stuffit Expander which reports:

Sorry, but a disk related error
(I/O Error - Bad Media?) has occurred.

Infrequently it reports "volume locked" instead of "bad media". I am
at my wits end. I am in touch with [email protected] who is
experiencing the same symptoms on the same Performa model. Read on if
you think you have seen this or you think you might be able to help,
or you are masochistic, or ...

A copy of this has been sent to [email protected] as well.

The Problem:

Stuffit Expander 4.0.1, 3.5.2, and even 3.0.7 will fail to unstuff a
".sit" file under some (yet) unknown conditions. Stuffit Expander
reports an error, typically "I/O Error bad media", but sometimes
"volume locked". I have tested 3.5.2 and 4.0.1 with and without the
Stuffit Engine. I tested 3.0.7 just for the heck of it. In all cases
of switching I trashed the Stuffit Expander preferences file.

1. Any subsequent attempt to unstuff that archive or any other
archive results in the same message.

2. Quitting other applications has no effect. If there was a memory
space problem, it did its damage, and there is no correcting
for it after the fact. I have tested with and without Apple's
Virtual Memory.

3. Trash the Stuffit Expander Preferences file, launch Stuffit
Expander, watch it produce a new Preferences file, and use the
Expand command to unstuff the archive. Still doesn't work.

4. Give Stuffit Expander 1024k memory instead of the 512k desired.
Launch Stuffit Expander, note in the "About this Macintosh"
display that Stuffit actually took 1024k. Still doesn't work.

5. Selecting another disk for the destination makes it work!

6. Restarting the Mac totally clears up the problem, i.e., the
orginal archive was fine, and Stuffit Expander unstuffs it
correctly to the same disk.

Machine and Configuration:

Performa 6115CD, 24mb
System 7.5.3
NO Virtual Memory (neither Apple's nor RamDoubler)
OT 1.1 with "Load Only When Active" checkbox UNchecked

Ethernet port connected directly to Ascend Pipeline 25 ISDN TA,
nothing else is on the Ethernet. This provides tcp/ip connection via
ISDN to my office. I do not use EtherTalk, I only require the tcp/ip
to Unix boxes at the office. I do not have ARA.

Local Talk connections to HP 855C printer and Mac IIsi.

I eliminated all my extensions, and I ran a controlled test with:

Extensions Manager:
"System 7.5.3" selected and then the following were unchecked
Macintosh Easyopen - didn't want desktop rebuild problem
Control Strip - thought it was irrelevant to the test

Extensions Folder after reboot:
Moved Stuffit Engine manually to Extensions Disabled
Couldn't find anything else that didn't look like normal Apple stuff.
Restarted after those changes.

Preferences:
Deleted Stuffit Expander Preferences.

Ran my usual mix of applications, eXodus 6.0 (X window server),
Netscape 2.0. Use Simpletext to browse a ReadMe file. I don't
exactly understand what I have to do before the problem will occur.

But it does occur in the controlled environment described.

I am nearly certain that I have seen the problem without running
eXodus. I am always running the ISDN line over the ethernet
though. I know I tried switching from OT 1.1 back to MacTCP using
the Network Software Selector. Stuffit Expander still failed.

If Stuffit Expander fails, it will not work again without a
Restart.

Steps Already Taken:

1. Original install of 7.5.3 was a clean install (using the 7.5.3 CD
Rom) on top of the 7.5 from the original Performa CD Rom. Before
I did that install I used Drive Setup 1.0.4 to update the driver.
Yes, I now have Drive Setup 1.0.5, but the documentation clearly
stated that the driver had not been changed from 1.0.4.

I have not reinstalled 7.5.3 since this started happening. I am
not sure how soon after I installed 7.5.3 this Stuffit Expander
problem started. I never saw it on 7.5.1. I can go for a week or
more (sometimes several) without using Stuffit Expander.

2. I ran Norton Disk Doctor 3.1.3 and Disk First Aid 7.2.2 to make
sure my disk was ok, and ran Speed Disk 3.1.3 to make sure the
disk was not too fragmented. I have heard reports of bugs (not
just performance degradation) having to do with badly fragmented
disks.

3. I deleted and rebuilt my desktop using TechTool 1.1.1.

4. I dumped all my files to a machine I borrowed from work using
local talk over ethernet, low level formatted my drive with Drive
Setup 1.0.5, and restored my files.

Yes, this is how virtual memory on the Mac has always worked, at least
since version 7.1

Plaintalk Mics are powered, so there plugs are a bit longer than standard
mic plugs. The sound control panel should know if you have a plaintalk
compatible mic or not, though I would not swear to it.

RamDoubler does not noticably slow down my 6200, but it does mean that
Zterm cannot download files, so I rarely use RamDoubler anymore (even
2.0beta does this). I have, however, noticed problems with virtual memory
when I make a very large VM partition (like 100 Megs). The system tends to
crash.

Check info-mac/com/inet, but this is not something I've setup on my own

Robert, just to add a couple of points to Wayne's excellent advice.

You really don't need MacTCP Switcher, that's for MacTCP. As Wayne says,
using FreePPP2.5rf it's nice and simple:

Configure TCP/IP v.1.1 for each provider. You wouldn't necessarily set
Configure Using PPP Server though, since for example at my main provider's
I've my own IP# number, and for that I must set Configure: Manually.
You'll see all your TCP/IP configurations under the File menu
Configurations dialog (Command-K), where you can select and Make Active the
service settings you want.

Install FreePPP2.5rf, including the menu or Control Strip option (or both)

Configure FreePPP2.5rf for each provider using FreePPP Setup

When you want to dial a particular provider, use (say) the FreePPP CS to
call FreePPP Setup, and use the Connect To popup menu to select the service
you want. As Wayne says, "Anything else that TCP/IP needs, it will get
>From FreePPP and the ISP that you're currently connected to." Now you can
connect.

But if your second provider is only used for mail (as is often the case),
there's an easier way:

Use Eudora as your mail program. In Eudora create a settings file for the
POP server and SMT server at each provider. Rename these files
appropriately and put their aliases in your Apple menu. Always use your
main provider settings in TCP/PPP. When on line, simply use the Apple menu
to switch mail services, calling Eudora's File menu Check Mail for each
service. Bingo, you've got your mail. Eudora is brilliant like this, how
could we not love it? Living at multiple POP's is just so simple.

[Usual disclaimers apply here of course :-]

starts up. Being a popular group, there's about 100 postings the first
day. You read 60 of them, and decide to continue later. Let's say you read
articles 1-59, and article 100.

You're gone for two weeks, to TabWorld, and finally get a chance to look
at your new favorite group.

Newswatcher tells you there are 180 new messages. You open it up and
bummer! There are only 70 articles! What happened.

Here's what happened. After the initial flurry, and with everyone off
enjoying TabWorld, posting dropped down to 10 articles a day. That's 140
new articles, plus the 40 you didn't read before. Unfortunately for you,
though, your provider expires articles after one week. So there are only
70 articles left on the server (articles #171-240).

Newswatcher (all versions) calculates the number of unread articles by
taking the largest article number and figuring the number of articles
elapsed since you last read. I think the server is supposed to provide the
lowest article number for each group, too, but it tends to be bogus. Or
maybe it's not in the header info. Anyhow, what you see is (sort of) your
provider's server's fault, but it's not really a bug. It's just an
artifact of articles expiring.

The count also gets off if you read cross-posted articles. Newswatcher
marks a cross-posted article as read after the first time you look at it,
but you won't see that in the count. So if you read everything in
alt.sweetners.fake before alt.saccharine-lovers, there may be even less
than 70 articles, if some were cross-posted between the two groups.

Hi!

A couple of months ago I had d'loaded a Hypercard stack from Info-Mac
referring to how Muslims consider Jesus Christ. Due to a Hard Disk crash I
have lost it. I found it to be very interesting and I would like to have it
d'loaded again. And this time I promise to back it up in time! =)

Anyone has any ideas of its whereabouts?

TIA
