CROSSWORD PUZZLE AID (PPC ONLY)
By Erik Oliver
Version 1.0
[email protected]

System Requirements:
* PPC Based Macintosh Compatible computer
* ample memory for the dictionary file you are using.

This program is similar in many respects to what one might use the 'grep'
program for on a UNIX box. The idea here is to simplify the process of
using a grep-like program for crossword puzzle assistance.

You need the application, Crossword, and a text file consisting of the
words/phrases that you wish to search in. I have included a NYTimes file
which consists of the words from a number of weeks worth of New York Times
Crossword Puzzles. A large english language dictionary is available with
the program Anagram 1.5 in the Info-Mac archives. (The slow speed of that
program on my PowerMac lead me to write this program.)

This is not a top notch Mac program but a quick and dirty tool to assist
crossword puzzle fans. Thus there are no guarantees express or implied for
using this program and any use is at your own risk. This program and the
associated dictionary file are freeware.

Subject: ! 5xxx/6xxx OWNERS MUST READ THIS! MAC DAMAGED !!

Hello all!

! 5xxx/6xxx OWNERS MUST READ THIS! YOUR MAC CAN BE DAMAGED !

-If you have a Macintosh 5xxx or 6xxx (in most cases, macintosh performa
with a PowerPC 603 chip, but also some other configurations) please read
this message, it should interest you ... and your answer (?) ;) would be very a
ppreciated.

-Well, I have a Performa 6200 24/500/CD (PowerPC 603/75) and I haven't
any problem with it. But I when I ran the new "5xxx-6xxx_Tester_1.0" from
Apple Computer, this utility told me that my cache memory was dammaged.
In fact, this sofware checks the motherboard AND the cache separately. It
can detect a problem either on your motherboard or on the cache. In fact, I
don't know if the problem comes from the cache level 1 or 2. Level 2 can be
replaced easily by the dealer, but level 1 implicates that all the motherboard
must be replaced! And that's a pity on a mac which runs very well! So, it would

be very nice if someone could tell me what type of cache memory comes the
problem from.

-If you want to get the 5xxx-6xxx_Tester and test your own mac or want more
information about it (I've got a read-me file from Apple), please send me an
E-Mail to [email protected] and I'll send it to you immedialty. Even if your

mac runs well it can have the problem. Only for macintosh series 5xxx and 6xxx
having a PowerPC chip.

-If someone has already experienced the same problem with the cache, could
you tell me what YOU did, what did (eventually) the dealer and what was
exactly the problem? Do I have to replace my cache even if my mac is running
well?

Thank you very much in advance and don't hesitate to send me a mail to get
the tester or to give me more information!

PortShare Pro allows Macs on a network to "publish" their serial port for
use by other Macs on that (AppleTalk or Ethernet) network, and to use the
ports of other Macs. It doesn't add any ports.

Port Juggler lets you plug in up to 4 devices simultaneously, but you can
only USE one at a time. I think its "smart" software decides which device
to connect based on what software you're running, or a preferences set-up;
i.e., if you run PaperPort, it'll connect that device; if you launch
communication software, it'll connect your modem. But you'd better quit
one program before using another that wants your serial port!

I believe Creative Solutions' Huster and Hurdler cards will do what you
want. They create additional serial ports via a SCSI connection. The
Hustler supports one 230kbps port (they claim throughput up to 25K
bytes/sec), or 2x115.2bps ports, or up to 4x56kbps ports. The Hurdler
supports only 56kbps ports. These are really additional ports, too; you
can theoretically USE up to 6 at the same time.

I have no connection with the manufacturer, don't even have one of their
products yet, but I've heard good things about the devices. But DON'T buy
>From them (at full list price); ask them for a reseller who discounts.
About a year ago, Dartek (800/832-7835) was selling the $395 list Hustler
for $339 That was too rich for my blood, but by now there may be other
dealers with deeper discounts or maybe the prices have come down now.

Subject: Can Word 6 Do What Word 5 Did?

Recently I've upgraded(?) to Word 6. I am unable to find the answers in the
manuals or help system to these three questions:

1. Does Word 6 have an equivalent to Word 5's simple-minded Renumber
command? W6 seems to want to change tab spacing of existing numbered lists,
where W5 would just let them exist as they were. Is there a way to get W6
to leave the existing tab settings alone, and simply change the item
numbers?

2. Is there an equivalent to W5's Work menu, where you could create
shortcuts to documents (frequently used or not) that you didn't care to
hunt for? W6 has a Recently Used File List, limited to the last 9 documents
opened, but some of my documents are needed only once every few days.

3. I occasionally see references to macro viruses. Is there a way to turn
off W6's unused-by-me macro capability?

Thank you.

Thanks for the correction. I didn't make it up. My information (or maybe,
misinformation) came by way of Seidman's Online Insider:

Subject: Help with LC/System 7.0

Hi again--
I get conflicting information, and I hope you can set me straight. I have
a Mac LC, System 7.0. I'm experiencing problems with Eudora Light and
Netscape. In Eudora Light, the attachments I send can't be opened, and the
ones I receive print out as characters. In netscape I can't move the
bookmarks into folders. When I called Slipnet, they said my System 7.0
can't handle Internet stuff, and I needed to upgrade to 7.5.3.

I was told before that LC systems can't be upgraded; I'm stuck. I did
upgrade to 10 megs of RAM, and I have 500 megs on my hard drive. If I
can't upgrade to 7.5.3, what can I do to make the Internet work for me? If
I can, how do I do it? I don't have a CD-rom; are there disks available?
Help!!
Thanks--

You can now buy a Zip, for the Mac, for $149, during a special rebate
offering from Iomega. You can try ordering from Mac Warehouse, Mac

Hmmmm...you might have a bad memory chip. Often bad memory will give you
the "chimes of death," but on my SE/30 I had the problems you have, and no
chimes.

I don't know of a way to test it except at a Mac repair shop. Good luck.

I'm afraid you're right. The screen capture you're getting with cmd-shift-3
is a 72dpi (dot-per-inch) bitmap graphic. While this is the perfect
resolution for your screen, it is horribly inadequate for slide production.

The problem is that you're starting with a bitmapped file of a low
resolution. Slide images are, at their lowest, 2,000 "lines" of resolution
per slide. To get the correct proportions, your image has to be stretched.
The only way to strech a bitmapped image is to duplicate pixels -- rather
like trying to use graph paper to enlarge a 3x5 photo by just putting
colors in the squares. This is where your jagged text is coming from,
since the text is part of the graphic.

A couple of suggestions: First, if the text on the slides is non-complex
(ie no wrapping around paths, inside objects, funny shapes, etc) you might
consider using an editing tool to erase the text, then retype it into
Persuasion over the top of the imported, edited graphic. This should avoid
your jaggies.

Second, if your text is complex, there's at least one product out there
that can translate your .PIC (bitmap) documents to true vector images
(mathmatical representations which can be scaled to any size). I doubt that
you're getting this level of translation with GraphicsConverter when you
save to an EPS. Adobe Streamline is what I use, however, my rather old
version (2.x) only does black and white output.

Streamline will take your existing bitmap and "trace" it as a vector
graphic and save it as one of several types (.EPS being one of them). It
takes some practice to get what you want, but it's doable. In most cases, I
usually end up doing touch-up work in Macromedia Freehand (or Illustrator).

A third option would be to use Photoshop or similar tool to increase the
resolution of the graphic, although with a little more finesse (and the
ability to touch-up) than just placing and enlarging.

There may be less painful ways out there. If so, I'll be interested to hear
the answers as well. Good luck.

Subject: Postscripf for non-Macs

Dear All,

I am working in a project with partners who are using PC or Sun platforms
and don't have Macs. Documents prepared by one partner are distributed to
the others usually by sending a postscript file via mail, so that the
receiver only has to print out the file to get the complete document.

Now for whatever reason Mac-generated postscript again is not what all the
rest of the world does and when I send out a PS file prepared on my Mac the
other partners can't pront it.

Has anyone got a tool to convert Mac PS files to DOS PS files or Sun PS
files and can anyone tell me what the difference in the files is?

Thanks

Since upgrading to a Mac 7600 with System 7.5.3 at work, I haven't been
able to use our Tamarack ArtiScan 6000c flatbed scanner. I've tried
Tamarack's newest driver software with PhotoShop 3, ColorIt 2.3, and
Tamarack's own ColorShop 24, all with similar results. Tamarack's tech
support person had several suggestions (SCSI #5, scanner first on the
chain, Modern Memory Manager off, Virtual Memory off), but none worked and
now even he is stumped.

Here is what happens: Start scan, head moves down the page one time (the
"red" scan) and stops. Wait 2 min. 18 sec. with the scanner and Mac frozen,
then a dialog box appears:

"A Problem With the Scanner, Parameter Error, Selection Phase, Result code
-1" and an OK button. Click the OK button.

"Could not complete your request because of a problem with the acquisition
module interface, -30000" and an OK button. Click OK and the Mac works again.

Has anyone reading this been able to use an ArtiScan 6000c with a Mac 7600

Subject: Type 11 error w/Netscape Gold 3.0b5

Dear Digest readers,
Some of you may have updated to Netscape Gold 3.0b5 , and wondered why
when loading some sites you get a type 11 error. Well, I've isolated
one potential cause. The LiveAudio plugin that comes with it doesn't
handle sites that were designed for Crescendo midi and x-midi files.

As soon as I switched my helper application to Crescendo, going to the
same site I found no error. As long as LiveAudio was my plugin, I got
type 11 errors. To make matters worse, Liveupdate's web page has the
same bug. So follow this process, and you will be rid of many type 11
errors:

1. Change the helper application for midi and x-midi to Save as.
2. Go to http://www.liveupdate.com
3. Download Crescendo.
4. Reboot with extensions off.
5. Install Crescendo in your Plugins folder.
6. Reboot
7. Go to helper applications under Options/General Preferences and set
midi and x-midi to use Crescendo.
8. Quit Netscape
9. Reboot
10 Run Netscape.
11. You are now ready to use both LiveAudio and Crescendo based sites.

Ridiculous that there should be such difficulty with LiveAudio to read
midi files made for Crescendo, but true.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
[email protected]
