Subject: [*] Fresnel Diffraction Explorer PPC

Abs: This archive contains version 1.0 of the Fresnel Diffraction Explorer,
an educational and scientific program that simulates Fresnel diffraction
patterns for any arbitrary two-dimensional aperture. PPC Native. See
for more info and 68k version.

Desc: What is Fresnel diffraction? Diffraction is a phenomena arising from
the wave nature of light. Fresnel diffraction occurs when a point source
radiates light in spherical waves, diffracts by an object, and projects a
diffraction pattern instead of a shadow. For example, the diffraction
pattern behind any circular object, whether it is a BB or a bowling ball,
yields a bright spot (!) in the exact center of where the shadow would be.
(See my web site, below.)

Why write the Fresnel Diffraction Explorer? The most common type of
diffraction taught in schools and colleges is Fraunhofer diffraction (which
uses plane waves), partially because the computations to predict its
effects are relatively easy (just a Fourier transform). But Fresnel
diffraction has traditionally been very difficult to predict. While I was
an undergraduate in physics at Harvey Mudd College, I created an algorithm
to solve that problem, a problem I later learned was of significant
interest in physics. I wrote a paper to be published in _Computers In
Physics_ very soon, and this is a
program that produces the results.

You can download a copy of it (both 68k+FPU and PowerPC versions) and see
demonstrations of its output at:

The program has a number of built-in apertures and allows you to import any
black and white PICT as an aperture.

For non-profit, educational, and scientific users, this software is
Postcard-ware: send me a postcard of your home town to register (check the
about box for where), and that's it. I'm not asking for money; I just want
to get an idea of how far this propagates. And, of course, email me any
comments or suggestions.

was fixed.

THE GAME OF MEMORY

This game is a rehash of the "Concentration" tile game but with a few lumps
of challenge (and audio) added.

Pairs of tiles are scrambled and placed face down. The player selects a
tile, then attempts to select the matching tile from the remaining lot.

If a match is made, the selected tiles are removed from the game and it's
that player's turn again.

If the player fails to make a match, the tiles are placed face down again
in their previous positions, and it's the next player's turn.

THE GAME OF SUPER-MEMORY

Instead of searching for pairs of tiles (Twins), you may select Triplets,
Quads, Quints or Sextets from the "Level" menu.

In these "super" modes, after the first tile is selected, the player is
allowed to select tiles until a tile does not match the first selection.

Subject: Zip cartridge carry alls?

. . .

I have a growing zip disk library and am looking for a good (read
efficient) way to carry them around with my powerbook. I would like
something similar to the small binders that you can get for a collection
of CD-ROMS or for floppies.

Anyone found a good solution?

. . .

Reply:

I use the 10 floppy disk carrier made by Case Logic and available just about
anywhere that sells floppies. The nylon pockets are a little tight, but once
you use them a few times (i.e., break them in) they can accommodate either one
Zip per pocket, or 2 floppies per pocket. Beyond 10, I've found that the Zips
(without their plastic cases) will fit into regular cassette carriers.

I have a three-drawer Floppy Disk holder manufactured by Casseta (locking) and
it has removeable drawers and it's lockable (with a cheap, easily broken lock)
but enough to keep prying little fingers (children) from getting in, and the
drawers remove and have a handy carrying handle if 10 Zips isn't enough for
you.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Q] Audio CDs not recognized

My system recently crashed while playing a Audio CD using AppleCD Audio Player
and Carl Huben's Digital Equalizer.

Since the crash, my Power Macintosh 7100/66 has refused to recognize Audio
CDs. When
ever I try o insert a Audio CD, I get a dialog box saying: "This disk is
unreadable by this Macintosh. Do you want to initialize the disk?" (it
offers to format the disk as 538.5 MB disk!)

I have done everything I could think of to fix the problem, including:
erasing preference files for Digital Equalizer and CD player, erasing and
reinstalling Digital Equalizer and CD player, zapping the PRAM, erasing and
reinstalling all CD rom software, and last but not least, a complete system
reinstall (system 7.5.3), all to no avail.

CD Roms work fine, and I actually found one way to play Audio CDs: If I
start Digital Equalizer and the AppleCD Audioplayer, I can insert a CD and
play it, however, the CD icon does not show up on the desktop and it can
only be ejected by rebooting the computer (if I try to eject it from the CD
player I get the message that "the disk could not be ejected because it is
being shared or it contains files that are in use").

I have contacted Carl Huben, author of Digital Equalizer, but he rejects
the idea that the problem is being caused by Digital Equalizer, saying that
his application do not make calls to the CD drivers.

Can someone please help me with this problem before I end up in a nut house?

Subject: [Q] Simulate 256 colors on a 16 color screen?

Here's what I hope is a simple question:

I have a DUO230 (MacOS 7.5.3) that I am mostly very happy with. My main
(and only) problem with it currently is its inability to run programs
that require 256 colors.

Is there some shareware program that will fool a program (or the system
itself) into thinking that I have a 256 color screen, when in actuality
I don't? This would seem to be possible, since my on-board screen can
mirror an externally connected 256-color screen when docked.

Anyone have any ideas or solutions?

Your input is appreciated,

Paul.

"Formatter 1" consequently I can't partition/format the drive in

"Formatter 1" is rather old so I assume that I need something

what I need? Or do I need a newer formatting utility? Or is
there a physical incompatability that I don't know about (other

If I need a new utility are there any recommendations?

hi michael,

the 603e chief feature is risc performance with low power consumption. in
terms of specint performance it delivers above the 601, and in terms of
specfp slightly below, however the chip can be driven at higher speeds ie
603e's at 200 MHz now, and looking at the bus clock multipliers (up to 6:1)
it seems motorola has plans for it at 300+, so in this sense it is not a
generation behind but rather an integral part of the ppc family going
forward.

nevertheless a portable involves some design compromises, and will
typically be slower than a desktop computer (especially dollar for dollar).

i infact have a 5300cs and find that the cpu is tremendous. the bottleneck
in these machines for me is the rather slow ide disk (at least in the
16/750 configuration). but this is made up for by the portability and the
sheer convinience of size, even though i very rarely run it from the
battery.

if you have time on your side, wait a little while longer, there are
rumours of a 200MHz 603e based powerbook with level2 cache arriving in the
comming months.

if you need the grunt, go with the desktop. it gives true workstation
performance.

bingo! have you been in touch with farallon?

i had similar anomalous things happen on an ethernet about a year ago. there
were two cascading hubs, (one asante 12 and starlet 16) and on the outside
of each hub was a leg built with farallon's "etherwave" boxes. there was a
mixture of 2 styles of these ray shaped network connectors. one provided a
localtalk printer to ethernet connection and a daisy chain localtalk
phonenet leg and another product just for macs. this network had a newgen
11x17 printer with an ehternet card and a laserwriter NTX printer.
print jobs disappeared, some folks could see some printers sometimes,
(ethernet and localtalk devices) and filesharing eventually blew up in their
faces. finally one mac/si couldn't see anyone. i asked the person on site to
switch the etherwave box in that office with a new one, and voila: network
good. flaky unit.
they eventually lost another one and replaced it. farallon exchanged them at
no charge. their topology has probably changed by now.
the combination of hubs and etherwave hardware worked very well, though. it
took me 2 solid days of making sure that each machine, macSE to 8100, was
running the latest system, network, and printer stuff, (then 7.1.2, NSI
1.5.1, LW8.2.2 respectively).
good luck

Subject: How can I make interactive scripts with PlainTalk and AppleScript?

I'm currently experimenting with the PlainTalk speech
recognition/text-to-speech system for Macintosh. In the folder "Speakable
items" I can put scripts that I've written in AppleScript, and these
scripts will be launched and executed when I speak the names of them. The
same goes for aliases, files or programs. But strange enough, that seems
like the _only_ way of feeding "input" in the form of speech to AppleScript
and the PlainTalk system.

Now, I want to make a _single_ script that (while it's running) can respond
to words in the form of speech. As it is today I can only "cheat" and make
the computer interact with the user by making several separate scripts.

A trivial example of what I want to do:
1) The user says "Hello"
2) PlainTalk launches the script called "Hello"
3) The first line in the script tells the computer to respond by saying
"Hello, how are you!"

*** So far so good. This I can allready do. Now's when I run into trouble ***

4) Now the script is supposed to halt and wait for more input in the form
of speech.
5) Let's say the user answers "Just fine thankyou".
6) The script shall now be able to interpret what was said (choose between
two or more preset alternatives. In this case the alternatives are "Just
fine thankyou" and "I'm feeling miserable").
7) If the user said "Just fine thankyou" the script will answer "I'm glad
to hear that". But if the user had said "I'm feeling miserable today" then
the script should have chosen to answer with "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that".
8) The script terminates.

The same example as above but with the "cheat method":
1) The user says "Hello"
2) PlainTalk launches the script called "Hello"
3) The first line in the script tells the computer to respond by saying
"Hello, how are you!"
4) The first script terminates.
5) Then the user says "Just fine thankyou".
6) Now PlainTalk has to launch a second script called "Just fine thankyou".
7) The first line in the script tells the computer to respond by saying
"I'm glad to hear that"
8) Script number two terminates.
9) And so on - you get the idea.

I've been working with this problem for an entire day now, and still I'm
not closer to a solution. Normally I wouldn't waste time on something that
I knew was impossible, but those of you who have tried Plaintalk 1.4 know
that there is a small program/script that comes with the PlainTalk 1.4
software, called "Tell me a joke". This program seems to do exactly what I
am looking for: interaction through speech within one single
script/program. I've tried to open this program to see how it was designed,
but it can't be opened through AppleScript. Opening it with ResEdit gave me
some clues, but still I could not make a program of my own. It seems like
"Tell me a joke" is a bit more advanced than the other programs/scripts
that come with the PlainTalk 1.4 software.

Now I wonder if there is anyone out there who can help me with this. Even
if the answer is that it's not possible, I'd be glad to know. That way I
can write this project off for good.

Thanks in advance,
Thomas Kahn

Subject: Icon View gets messed up

I prefer to view some of my folders in the "Small Icon" view, with the
icons arranged in a certai functional pattern (snap-to-grid on). Every
once in a while (sometimes weeks apart), when I open one of these
folders, the icons have inexplicably changed to the big icons, but the
grid remains the same small-icon grid, leading to overlapping icons. If
I now select Small Icon View, the icons DO change back to small ones,
but the grid changes, too, to a hopelessly crunched grid in which both
icons and text overlap, esentially unusable. Restoring the original
arrangement by hand is a big nuisance.

I've had this problem for a long time, first starting with a Mac II fx
running system 6.0.7; it persisted when I changed to 7.1, and I have it
also on a Powerwave 132 running 7.5.2.

Has anybody else had this problem?
What causes it?
Is there a fix, or at least a painless way to restore the intended
arrangement?

I suspect this is a startup conflict of some sort, hich is triggered
only under special circumstances, but it occurs too infrequently to
trace it down with Conflict Catcher or some tool like it.

Please forgive me but I don't remember who asked this question. I had a =
system crash while reading Info-Mac and this one issue was gone.

Now I don't know if this helps or not, since I don't use MacGS. If you =
have access to Illustrator 6.0, it comes standard with EPS Parser plug-in =
and you can open and manipulate most eps graphics. "Most," but so far I =
haven't encountered any eps that fails to open with this parser. Very =
very nice.

But if you don't have Illustrator 6.0, then using quarto.c might help. =
This is a C program by Michael Hawley of Media Lab. There is an option =
of 2-up printing which allows you to make a new eps file with two pages =
on the same page. With this option, the orientation of each page is =
reversed, i.e., from portrait to landscape. This might help in =
reorienting your graphics. The catch is that the graphics will be =
smaller, since there are now two pages of graphics in just one page. If =
you have MPW C, I can give you the Mac-adapted version of quarto.c. But =
please remember that this is copyrighted by Mr. Hawley. The original =
file is in
ftp://wilma.cs.brown.edu:pub/postscript/quarto.c,
according to comp.sources.postscript program faq. Also note that quarto =
seems to work with LW8 postscripts but not GX postscripts nor with some of=
PC postscripts. It was originally written for NExT postscripts. (I'm =

ascii eps, tho' I haven't opened any binary eps with it yet.

Hi Jeff!

I've also had some trouble viewing/printing PostScript files that I have
found on the Internet. My suggestion is that you download a program called
Mac GS Viewer (together with dito files and documentation).

* Try downloading it from: ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/pub/ghost

* More information at: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html

With Mac GS Viewer you can view the PostScript files on the screen, and if
you want to you can save them as PICT files. I don't know about printing
though. I too have a StyleWriter, and when I tried to print the PostScript
documents I saw that the "Print" alternative in the File menu was disabled
(displayed in gray). So I just saved them as PICT files and printed them
>From an ordinary graphics program.

I don't have a LaserWriter and I have no drivers installed for any
LaserWriter, but a wild guess would be that _if you have_ a LaserWriter
driver installed and a LaserWriter connected to your Mac, then the "Print"
option in Mac GS Viewer will be enabled, and you can print the PostScript
files directly from Mac GS Viewer. (As I said, it's a just wild guess).

Good Luck,
Thomas Kahn

I have a customer who has a Mac PowerBook 150 with an internal
SupraFaxModem144PB. I tried to set them up with an ISP yesterday and the
modem was behaving in a bizarre fashion. Most of the time the SLIP
dialler returned "Modem not responding. Connect & turn on modem."
Sometimes, with MicroPhone LT open in the background and having chosen
"Open Connection" in MicroPhone LT, it would dial; sometimes it wouldn't.
Sometimes without MicroPhone LT open in the background it would dial;
sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes after a reboot it would dial; sometimes
it wouldn't. Disabling fax software made no difference.

We managed to dial, connect and transfer mail just fine using a USR
Sportster 28.8 external attached to the printer port (the only serial
port on the PB150).

MicroPhone LT 1.0.1
Fax Monitor 1.7
Fax Print 1.7
Fax Preferences 1.7

MacTCP 2.0.6
InterSLIP 1.0.1

System 7.1.1
8 MB RAM
120 MB HD

Subject: Syquest EZ135 and Menu Bar Pattern (!)

Dear Info-Macists,

I will probably buy an Syquest EZ135 Drive but I first wanted to know if it is
really reliable. Amazingly, it is much cheaper and faster than the Zip Drive an
d thats why I am very interested. I just wanted to know if you, EZ drive owner
, if you have (had) some problems with it. If you have information about its re
al speed let me know, thats also very important for me.
I have an IDE HD and I hope the syquest is not slower than it.

Second question (very different indeed): I heard that there is an INIT/CDEV tha
t allows you to put nice patterns in the menu bar. I dont remember the name of
it and I am now looking for it. If someone know the name of this INIT and know
where I could find it (I suppose on Info-mac, because everything is on Info-Ma
c!) please let me know.

Please send your answers directly to me ([email protected]) because I dont
read the digests every day.

TIA

Subject: Terminal emulation source code.

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone out there can point me to a
freeware terminal emulator package, that comes with the source code.
Something in C is essential and MetroWerks CW for mate would be ace, but
I guess I can't be too picky.... Thanks Jirrah Walker

Subject: The Truth About Termination Jumpers

I would like to thank the community for responding to my request for
tips on where to stick those damn jumpers (aside from certain passing
fancies that did cross my mind before this was all said and done) in
order to un-terminate my drive, and answering my bewildered questions
about pin sets FK, SS, WS, EP in the process.

Many folks pointed me towards Quantum's web site, where rumor hath it
there lies all kinds of information on Quantum's drives. (silly me;
I would have anticipated sales pitches and slow-to-load graphics. who
woulda thought to use the web to make information available? :-)

Special thanks to William L Wong and, in particular,
Jean-Luc Barblan , who explained that ancient
to medieval Quantums had terminators of the many-pin variety that
must be pulled to un-terminate. Barblan coherently explained that they
look like black combs and sit close to the SCSI cable connector and
normally come as a set of 3 combs. Bingo! Damn, never would I have
considered those things to be other than the surface texture of some
sophisticated microelectronic circuitry; I certainly would not have
dreamed of sticking a pointy object under the edge of one and prying
upwards! But armed with vividly clear description I tried it and yep,
just popped right out and drives work wonderfully unterminated now
(each of them occupying the bay that Apple figured on sticking a 2x
internal CDROM into, and each therefore being the second internal HD
for their respective computers).

Barblan went on to explain that Bloom (or whoever the original poster
of internal-termination configuration info was) had misread when
identifying the mystery pin-set "FK" -- it is "PK" and it just means
"park" and it is no more than a convenient spot to store a jumper if
you aren't using it; and PK pinsets appear most often on drives that
do indeed have the TE (termination) pinset rather than the set of black
combs, so you can unterminate your drive and park the jumper so as to
be able to find it again later. SS pinset = self-seek, which is used
only in the factory for testing; EP = enable parity (I'm still a little
fuzzy on what parity and parity checking is, but if jumped it is
enabled). WS is wait/spin and causes your drive to wait for a command
to spin up before it spins up; if not jumped, it spins up when power
hits the device.

(Ugh. They should replace it all with a simple SCSI-ID selector and
an even more simple on/off switch for termination, like good externals
have. Why should an internal hard drive be 15 times as user-hostile?)

Anyway, thanks; it has been a lesson and my drives and SCSI bus are
working.

Subject: Unmute sound w/o going to control panel?

I have a PM 7500 with a mile of wire coming out the back of it. I would
like to be able to enable the computer's speakers to be activated upon
start up, even if there is a headphone cable stuck in the socket at the
back, without going through the control panel every time. Is this
possible? Can an applescript be written to do this job automatically at
start-up?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bob
