Subject: [*] Airport ID (4) data file
** UPDATE **
'Airport IDs (4) data' is an Airport IDs database that contains the
4-letter ICAO airport identifiers. Since this file contains over 6600
entries it makes quite a hefty download. I decided to release it
seperately so users who do not require this database would not be
required to spend the additional download time.
** OVERVIEW **
Airport IDs (download seperately) is a neat little utility that allows
you to search for Airport/City locations or Airlines by name or ID code.
It returns all records that match your criteria (truncates list if over
32K characters). Registered users can display the location on a world map
and export/import the database to make modifications/corrections as they
desire.
Thank you to users who have previously registered Airport IDs; you do not
need to register this new version. The registration cost is only $7 (free
for FedEx employees) so please register if you decide to keep this
program. Site licenses are available.

file, a new airline ID file, and the 4-letter ICAO file [must be
downloaded seperately]) and a re-sizeable window that remembers its

Subject: [*] AutoCheck XFCN - The only "char-by-char" text validity checker.
AutoCheck XFCN
=A91996 ZiggySoft, By Paul Consolo
e-mail: [email protected]
The Mac graphic environment is very different from the one of IBM
mini-systems (like old AS400). Yes, this is well-known. But, although the
many advantages of our Mac, some little feature, especially for commercial
purposes, is not present.
In Macintosh, the editing of standard fields, for example, rarely can be
controlled "as-you-type", but only checked after the text is completely
entered. Thus, also in HyperCard.
AutoCheck is an XFCN that, involving the "keyDown" hyperTalk function,
allows a "char-by-char" control of the text you type on a field; you can
decide to enter only numbers, letters, regular dates, formatted text, or
any group of predefined chars. The entered char can be automatically
modified (upper case, lower case, initial caps) and the total string lenght
can be limited to any number of chars.

Subject: [*] BBEdit extensions for MacPerl
The package contains four BBEdit extensions that facilitate the use of
BBEdit as an external editor for MacPerl. These extensions are freeware.
The four extensions are:
1. Run MacPerl - This extension sends the text in the active BBEdit
window to MacPerl to be executed as a Perl script. If a Perl script
executed by the extension writes output to STDOUT or STDERR then a new
BBEdit window is created and the output is put into the new window after
the script is finished executing. This extension was formerly named Run
Perl Script. There is no need to download this new version of the
extension if you already have the old version.
2. Run MacPerl Front - When this extension is run MacPerl is brought to
the front, and the contents of the active BBEdit window are sent to
MacPerl to be executed as though run using the Run Script command in
MacPerl (e.g., STDOUT is sent to the MacPerl STDOUT window rather than
to a new BBEdit window).
3. Run File with MacPerl - When this extension is executed a standard
file dialog is displayed to select a file that is sent to MacPerl and
executed as a Perl script.
4. Edit MacPerl Script - When this extension is run a standard file
dialog is displayed to select a file to be edited in BBEdit. This
extension is useful for editing Perl scripts in file types that cannot
be edited normally by BBEdit (runtimes, droplets, etc.). This extension
requires MacPerl 5.1.0r2 or later.

Subject: [*] Geoport Shut Down V1.0.1
What is Geoport Shut Down and how does it work?
If you use Apple's Geoport Telecom Adapter (as do I) then you may have
noticed that your system memory partition grows by about 400-500k when
the modem is on. This is because most all the modem software is loaded
into memory. This is done so that the CPU can process in real time all
of the modems MOdulation DEModulation functions as Geoport is a
'software' modem. The data pump is the Macintoshes CPU itself. There are
no DSP datapumps as in a conventional modem.
This is also why your system slows down during a data call. The CPU is
running all your apps and acting as a modem datapump as well.
Now, after your data call it'd be nice to have a speedy way of
reclaiming that 500 odd K you lost to run the modem especially if your
tight on RAM.
Geoport Shut Down accomplishes this task. Simply open it, click on the
Shut Down button and 400-500k is added to the Largest Unused Block field
in About This Macintosh as GSD frees up memory.
System Requirements:
System 7.0 or greater.
A geoport Telecom equipt Macintosh or Power Macintosh (obviously).
GSD is freeware: I wrote it because I like programming Macintoshes (the
Raz=F8r Rug project). Though if you do download and use it an e-mail
would be nice; The addresses are below.
You are free to distribute but only with this attached READ-ME. If you
have a web server or a page, feel free to put it in your ftp directory
etc. I'd be stoked if many Geoport users got to using this.

You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much memory. RAM
Charger is a new, major upgrade to OptiMem: the breakthrough technology
that makes a fundamental improvement in the way Mac applications use
memory. It not only makes a whole lot more of your memory usable, for
keeping more applications and documents open, it also makes your
memory more flexible and reliable. RAM Charger is easier to use, yet offers
more control over how memory is OptiMized.
A RAM Charged app can open initially into a minimal size block of
memory--then resize automatically--right out to the limits of the memory
in your machine. Cuts down on application-related =D2Not Enough Memory=D3
errors and crashes.
If you use virtual memory or RAM Doubler, RAM Charger helps you get a
lot more into your extended memory space, too. Works on ANY MAC,
including Pluses, SEs, Classics, LCs and Power Macs (works with Modern
Memory Manager and System 7.5, too). Requires System 7. Makes plenty
of memory available for 4MB Macs to use System 7 and current versions of
popular apps, productively.
This complete copy of RAM Charger operates for 7 days after installation.

Subject: [*] SuperGraph 1.5.1 - implicit grapher
SuperGraph is a powerful, easy-to-use, inexpensive program to graph
explicit and implicit mathematical functions. Implicit expressions, ones
that cannot easily be solved for either x or y, have presented a
challenge to visualize. SuperGraph makes that a thing of the past.
For example, SuperGraph can graph complicated expressions in two
variables like y^2(y-1)-x^2(y^2-1)+2xy^2-x^4=0. And it's only $15
shareware (payable through Kagi Shareware or directly to the author at 90
Maple Drive, Great Neck, NY 11021).
SuperGraph differs from Apple's Graphing Calculator in its flexibility
and customizability when dealing with implicit expressions (which
Graphing Calculator does not directly support) and in its ability to run
on 680x0 (non-PowerPC) Macintosh computers.
SuperGraph is especially suited to demonstrating various implicit
expressions and techniques of sketching them in a classroom situation.
SuperGraph requires a Macintosh with a 68020 or higher processor and
System 7.
More information about SuperGraph is available at
.

Subject: [*] TrueKeys for CJK TrueType Fonts
Many find that there are overwhelmingly large amount of Chinese,
Japanese, Korean (CJK) truetype fonts in the market designed only for PC.
A lot of those fonts do not have multiplatform character mapping support
and therefore can not be converted to Mac font. For people in Mainland
China or Singapore where GB coded Chinese is official, they often find
most of the available truetype Chinese fonts are in big5 encoding. For
people in Japanese where Shift-JIS encoding is official in both MS-DOS,
Windows and Mac, there is no net-savvy EUC encoding font support. A key to
solve these problems is here now.
TrueKeys is a Chinese, Japanese, Korean (CJK) 2-byte truetype font
conversion utilities. What makes it different from other truetype
conversion such as TTConvert 1.5 and TrueConvert 0.3b is that it generates
its own cmap table for specified language encoding, and dissembles the
original font to assemble the original glyph data into a new truetype.
This strategy corrects
some common PC font problems such as no Mac cmap table support, etc. When
TTConvert or TrueConvert does not work for your font, you should seriously
try TrueKeys.
System requirement:
Any mac with system 7+, and 8MB RAM required. The TrueKeys will
need 1.3 times font size allocated to it for font rendering. For system
where RAM is limited, please use virtual memory. For best performance, a
PowerMac with system7.5/16MB RAM or above is recommended. TrueKeys is a
FAT binaries distribution,i.e., it contains both 68K and PPC native codes
to run on both type CPU.

Yes, that is exactly what is meant by "bursting".
Eudora 3.0 only knows how to burst digest in standard MIME digest format.
There are some old digest and other non-standard mulitpart formats out
there that Eudora can't handle. The plug-in is able to use the new EMSAPI
to do the bursting of these formats.

If the problem is with the HP driver then try using Apple's Laserwriter 8.x
driver, preferably with a PPD file for your specific HP printer (assuming
your 4MV is a Postscript printer). I do this for our many networked HP
Laserjet 4Si's at work. I use Laserwriter 8.3.4 (had trouble with 8.4),
and I got a PPD file for this particular Laserjet from Adobe's ftp
server...
Don't know if there's a PPD file for you 4MV or not. Check it out.

Is anyone else having problems with aaron version 1.5
I'm on a PowerMac 8500/120 16 running 7.5.3r2
When I startup with aaron enabled, my finder sits there for a minute after
the desktop shows up before it starts my startup items, and it doesn't
allow you to click anywhere. Also, it causes my versatile startup palletes
not to come up.
And finally, I connect to the net over a PPP connection using slirp, and

All the problems disappeared when aaron 1.5 was turned off.

Subject: Color Stylewriter Pro Question
Hello all!
I have a color style writer pro that I want to use on a network. For the
image writer, we had the choice in the chooser for a "stand alone" icon or
a "networked" one. Unfortunately, there is no "networked" icon that
appears for the color style writer pro in the chooser when I open it, there
is only the "stand alone" one. This means that I must have the printer
directly plugged into one of the ports of my powermac fot it to work. The
thing is, I want to use one port for the modem and the other one for the
network. So I really want the color style writer pro to be recognize has a
network element. In the color stylewriter pro manual they talked about a
program called "colorshare". I searched all over for it and couldn't find
it... I'm at lost here... Could someone plase help me on this one?

If the fax receiver is what I seem to recall it may not need any additional

Paul, running a fairly similar setup (Eng Sys 7.5.5 + JLK 1.0 [yep!:-]) I'm
having no problems with _Zip_ drives, either mounting them at startup, or
booting from them.
However: I'm not using any version of any Iomega drivers, but rather FWB's
Hard Disk Toolkit 1.8s (currently 2.0.1) on all internals and cartridges.
And a very modest set of 3rd party extensions, mainly Now Utilities &
Boomerang 5.0.2.
These symptoms suggest either the Iomega driver on your Jaz carts is
malfunctional, or that you have a wayward extension. (Assuming nothing in
your Startup folder...)
First thing therefore would be to try mounting a Jaz at startup with Shift
key down, to switch extensions off. (Make sure when you do this that the
Mac "sees" the Jaz at startup, you should see its Read light active for a
second before you get the initial little smiling Mac. You might have to
boot twice in succession to achieve this.) If the Jaz mounts then you've
got an extension conflict. Use Extension Manager or a 3rd party equiv.
like Startup Manager (before 7.x.x, Al's right on that one!) to do several
sorts of your extension set to catch the culprit.
If you can't mount a Jaz on startup with extensions off, then if possible
get a 3rd party format program like Silverlining 5.6.4, Hard Disk Toolkit
or Drive7 etc and format a Jaz cart with it. Now I think you'll find it
will mount correctly.
Small aside: Iomega's support is now at once costly, and still nonexistent;
and after 5 minutes of playing with their own format program for the Zip I
never touched it again. Really I would recommend HDT 2.0.1... [usual
disclaimers here]
Good luck!

Subject: Libel
My name is Carl Huben, and I am writing you to express my dismay at your
irresponsible editorial practices.
In a previous issue of the info-mac digest, you printed Hannes Hofer's
ludicrous and unsubstantiated claim that my Macintosh shareware program,
Digital Equalizer 2.0, permanently damaged his computer. Anyone with a solid
understanding of Macintosh computers knows that software can absolutely not
cause the problem he describes. It was irresponsible of you to publish this
letter, because it contains a false claim which has hurt my shareware
business, and damaged my reputation as a programmer. It is clearly libelous.
Worse still, you did not bother to contact me before (or after) printing
it.
Then, in a subsequent issue, you allowed a vituperative letter from Al Bloom,
in which he attacked the Digital Equalizer program, as well as me personally.
I am disgusted that you allowed this childish rant in your digest; it's
completely inappropriate. You didn't contact me for a response to Bloom's
letter, either.
After seeing Mr. Bloom's letter, I immediately composed a response which
politely and reasonably addressed the claims made by Hofer and Bloom. I
emailed it to you (at this address) on September 18th. In another enormous
lapse of editorial responsibility, you chose not to print it.
As I said at the top of the letter, I am asking you for the last time to
print the response I sent to you on the 18th of September. If you need
another copy, write to me at this email address and I will provide one.
If you do not allow me space in the digest to respond to the libelous attacks
you've printed, I will contact my corporation's attorney to discuss my
options for legal action against the digest.

Figure I might as well toss in my two cents worth here. I updated last
week and started having frequent, odd slowdowns and freezes, something
that had been happening very rarely with 7.5.3 and which was supposed to
be further improved with 7.5.5.
The problems seemed to be more and more frequent until today, when I
couldn't even get Netscape or Internet Explorer to load without a freeze.
After 5 tries, I decided to take drastic action.
hello VM. Voila! No more freezes (so far). Plus, the update is living up
to its ReadMe. Much faster as Max noted, especially under VM.
RamDoubler was a disaster for me with 7.5.3 until the 1.6.2 update. I
guess the same thing may be happening again.

the same problem on another machine as well immediately after LW 8.4
installed (See Prev Post)). This in not the focus of this post however....
Today's Problem: After installation of 7.5.5, I am unable to print in the

not print to my printer at home (Per LW II NT on localtalk) or to any of
the LWs at work on an ethernet network when I tried to print in the
background. Document would spool and remain in the queue. No flashing
light on the printer indicating communications. Labeling the job as
"Urgent" made no difference. If I selected foreground printing, the
documents would print fine.
Other problems noted - 0ccasional keystrokes and mouse clicks not
recognized. Truely annoying. This was episodic and may have only occurred
after a printing attempt. When they occured, they occured with regularity.
I have not been working in a quiet setting but I believe the hard drive in
the powerbook was more active than usual when this was occuring. Check of
drive with Disk First Aid revealed no problems.
Attempt to clean install 7.5.2 over 7.5.5, the installer told me I would
have to remove the system folder and try again! Do not know why but the
installation of 7.5.5 appears to prevent the installation of older versions

booted with another drive so I could do a clean install. That worked.
Clean install performed, (7.5.3 => 7.5 Update 2.0 => 7.5.5 Update) problem
remained without change.
Rebooted with Apple-only INITs, all the same problems remained (printing,
lost keystrokes, lost mouse clicks).
Removed all trace of 7.5.5 and reinstalled 7.5.2, 7.5 Update 2.0 and 7.5.3
Rev 2. Now background printing works fine (still using LW 8.4) and no
keystrokes and or mouse clicks are lost.
So far I have seen one other person report problems on a PB5300 with 7.5.5.

Subject: Switching between RJ45/AAUI ports
My PowerMac 7600 has both RJ45 and AAUI ethernet ports, but only the
RJ45 port works when they are both plugged in. Does anyone know how
to switch between these on the fly (allowing me to switch between
two separate ethernet networks without buying a switchbox).
Thanks,

Hi!
I am looking for a shareware (or solution) that would help me
synchronize all my macs on my network so that all the users will have

Subject: video player needed
Here's my situation:
1) Apple PowerMac 8500/150 w/ 80 MB physical memory
2) AppleVision 1710AV monitor set to 1152x870
3) Sony VCR, Aiwa stereo
4) dorm room @ college, no TV
5) Mac will be used as a server (NetPresenz & other Mac-based servers
and/or Power Mach^Ten), HTML authoring device (Tex-Edit, Photoshop), www
browser (Navigator 3.0), mail reader (Eudora Pro 3), and word processor
(Word 5.1a, 6.0.1a, or WordPerfect 3.5.1) - probably all at once
I want to have a video display window (approx. 400x300 pixels) in the lower
left corner of my screen (basically a TV) while I'm doing e-mail, word
processing, browsing, etc. I would like the window to be floating, but
shrinkable to a nub in the lower left corner with a mouse click click or
key combination. I want only the video display and maybe a very few small
controls at the top/bottom of the window (the Apple Video Player has large
controls on the right.) I don't need video capture ability.
I would also like the display to be expandable to cover the enire screen.
>From what I've seen, the only way to do this is to switch to 640x480. Even
if the app had to do this, it would be easier.
I've tried a number of video players and all have some kind of problem.
Some are slow to update the video display, some have odd display windows,
some have problems with audio. Any recomendations are appreciated. Also,
any pointers to info/source for writing a video display app would be great.
Maybe I'd actually make use of the CodeWarrior acadmeic I have, if I had
something to learn to do.
Thanks,

Do you have a cartridge in the ZIP drive when you start up your Mac? If
so, your Mac is probably loading the 4.2 driver from the ZIP cartridge long
before it starts looking for Extensions. Try restarting without a
cartridge in the ZIP drive. If you don't get the warning message, you've
found the cause.
Most (if not all) hard disks have a hidden area which is reserved for
driver software. If the disk gets mounted and the computer does not yet
have a driver for it loaded into memory, the computer reads the driver from
the hidden area on the disk; it can then use that driver to access the rest
of that disk.
To update the driver software on your ZIP disks, run the Iomega "Zip
Install" program again, but this time click on the "Update Disks" button.
The on-screen instructions should be easy to follow. You shouldn't have to
restart after updating your ZIP disks. (Unfortunately, the version I'm
using has a bug -- I get errors when I try to update more than one disk. I
have to run the program, update one disk, quit, run the program again,
update another disk, etc.)

Next time you boot your Mac, *don't* push the Zip disk in until after
the Finder appears. If there's a disk in the drive at startup, the Mac
reads the driver off the disk. Then when the Iomega extension gets its
chance, it finds an Iomega driver is already loaded, and furthermore,
it's the wrong version. You can use the disk updater in your Iomega
Tools folder to update the driver on the disk to the current version
once you're up and running.
