Subject: [*] Mahjong 1.0.4

This is a new bug fixed version of my game Mahjong for the Macintosh.

Bug fixes:
=46ixed the launch bug. It was due to an unitialized variable in the about
box routine. Fixed a bug where mahjong was impossible directly after a
kang. Bug fix where pairs in certain combinations (e g bamboo 5, 5, 5, 6, 7
and two North) failed to give Mahjong when another player discarded a
suitable Mahjong tile. Bug fix, when bidding for example a chow, one card
is taken from the discard area (dead cards). That card is erased on screen.
If looking at dead cards holding mouse down and then releasing the dead
cards area is redrawn using all five places for cards. When discarding a
card, the card gets displayed on top of the fifth card hiding it. If a
computer player was first to play in a game the first discarded tile wasn't
displayed. Some tiles got corrupted when drawn on screen on B/W macs.

Subject: [*] MicNotePad Lite 3.7.7

Version 3.7.7 adds minor interface improvements for some uses.

MicNotePad is an easy to use, enhanced, digital tape recorder. Its
significant features are: It also is a transcriber. It works. It is easy
to use. It works in the background. It uses only half a megabyte of RAM.
70 pages on-screen user guide are built in.

MicNotePad is being used for dictation, transcription, and archiving.
MicNotePad is being used to record test flights, interviews, lectures,
meetings, performances, and kids.

To fully explore MicNotePad, switch to both Large View and Full Menus. In
spite of its ease of use and reliability, MicNotePad's long list of
features include superior sound quality, yet one hour fits into only 14MB,
adjustable sound formats, optional automatic playback, rewinding, and
locking, unique markers, sound check, adjustable sound input gain level,
adjustable key combinations, adjustable playback speed while keeping
original pitch, notification, selection of sound input device, AppleScript
scriptability, drag and drop onto email messages, playback of many aif, au,
wav, and system sound files, some optimization to allow transfer from and
to audio tapes, compatibility with global search engines, totally
transparent compatibility across the hardware platform from the PowerBook
140 to the Power Macintosh 9500. It even allows to use regular external
microphones with the PowerBook 5300 series without using any hardware
adapters.

Balloon Help often clarifies when minor features are not available on
specific Macintosh models and describes some more power features.

MicNotePad is a speech product that is well integrated into the word
processing paradigm. Other than most other speech products, it works for
any language, accent, number of speakers, background noise, or topic.
Beyond uses in journalism, legal and medical transcription, and higher
education, it also serves well in language study, speech therapy, with
attention deficit disorder, and for creative writing.

Limitations: This free MicNotePad Lite 3.7.7 does not function in Japan.
Also, for any Mac model that will be introduced after summer of 1996 you
might have to come back for a newer version. If that occurs, then it is
obvious immediately, and you can send an e-mail to the authors to
accelerate development of a new version (your vote for the budget). The
authors hope to remove such limitations upon clearance of certain
contractual issues sometime soon.

Subject: [*] PacMac Deluxe 1.1; a native arcade game

Arcade game. PacMac Deluxe is a shareware game for the Mac.

The best Pacman(tm) clone on the Mac ever.
Wonderful animation, tons of levels, any music-modules you wish
(three provided), HiRes graphics for 17" and higher monitors and last,
but not least, the chance to create your ever-dreamed own levels!
All this is possible, now, with PacMac Deluxe!

System requirements: a 020 Mac (030/040 at 25MHz *recommended*) or
a PowerMac; System 7.0; Sound Manager 3.0; a 13" or higher monitor
in 256 colors; a 2.5Mb to 3.5Mb free RAM partition; 3Mb disk space.
The program runs native on *both* 68K and PPC machines.

Permission is granted to the InfoMac staff to include this program
on their CDROM. Any other shareware publisher should contact us to
get our approval.

This is the fourth public release.
About version 1.1: fixed a number of cosmetic glitches throughout
the whole program; fixed a sound volume bug on some machines:
we now recommend using Sound Manager 3.2 or later; fixed a rather
dumb bug in Cycle Musics: now, musics always get cycled correctly;
solved a memory allocation problem where too much RAM was getting
lost when changing a music; added a frame rate control to the
Preferences dialog: the previous settings, Normal and Turbo, now
default to 30 and 60 frames per second; the overall range goes from
25 fps to 100 fps; improved the keyboard responsiveness: it's now
easier to walk around corners.

Subject: 7.5.5 on Performa 5200 with UTP/CS card

Hello all,

I have tried just about everything, but it seems to be impossible to get
System 7.5.5 going on a Power Mac 5200, equipped with an Apple UTP ethernet-
card in the Communications Slot. Both Classic networking and Open Transport
don't seem to like my UTP-interface. Too bad, because we've got 10 identical
systems here...

The system has been running fine under 7.5.1 and 7.5.3, but as soon as 7.5.5
is installed the OS tells me that it cannot use the selected networkinterface
and therefore will switch to LocalTalk.

This morning I installed Open Transport 1.1.1 on top of 7.5.3 and got the same
nasty errormessage... So... Back to 7.5.3...

Anybody got a solution for this problem?

Oh, yes... I tried this on 2 Mac-hine-s, so it's not just one failing inter-
face...

Careful there Gordon: BinHex 5.0 and BinHex 4.0 are two very different
programs, *not* just a step up in version, and thus, are not backwards
compatible. BinHex 5.0 de/compresses MacBinary (.bin) while BinHex 4.0
de/compresses BinHex (.hqx).

Gordon is right in that StuffitExpander would solve almost all your
decompression worries, that is, if you have DropStuff With Easy Expander
installed.

If there isn't a FAQ on this one, there should be.

Graeme, a Wintel box has no idea what Macintosh type/creator means. Oddly
enough, a file downloaded to a Wintel box has no Mac file/creator information
attached to it.

Since the Wintel machine knows nothing of type/creator, the Mac pretty much
views the file as the lowest common denominator -- text.

Wintel and Mac have some file types in common. GIF and JPEG graphics come
to mind. And some Microsoft Office programs' files.

Whatever. Don't bother double-clicking the Wintel file. You'll likely die.
Launch the app. Open the file from within the app. Sometimes you'll have to
tell the app to open "all" file types. Sometimes, as with JPEGView, you might
have to tell the app to look inside all files to see if any are really of the
type the app can handle.

Whatever. If you must download to a Wintel box, your best bet is to download
in text format (either HQX or UUE or Base 64 or real text foramt). Various
Mac-side pgms will handle whatever came down to your Wintel box.

I'm continually amazed at what the free Stuffit Expander can handle. I have
dropped Wintel EXE self-extracting ZIP files onto Stuffit Expander. The files
came out usefully on the Mac. I've said it before. Raymond Lau does good work.

Otherwise, I use UU-Lite for UU-encoded files. I use YA-Base 64 for base-64
encoded files. I use ZIP-It for ZIP'd files.

I do not expect a virgin Mac to deal with other-system files. Various Mac-side
tools can deal with them, often admirably.

Before you snarl, consider how well a Wintel machine can handle Mac disks and
files. Mostly it's a NOT!

Before doing that, he should first trash the "Finder Preferences" file in
his Preferences folder. Not sure which control panels are resetting, but
that fixed my problem when my Views panel settings were defaulting every
boot.

If his battery was dead, I'd imagine with all certainty his time would
reset on him after he turned off his Macintosh -- if that's not the case,
the above should work.

Subject: LaserWriter IISC

I found a LaswerWriter IISC at an auction and am trying to get it to
work with my Performa 575. It has what apprear to be two 50 pin
centronics (scsi?) connectors and one other one that looks like a adb
connector. When I choose LaserWriter in the Chooser, it says this is
network only. However, the Apple Network connectors I have are either a
different connector for the cable, or a DIN 8 for the connector box. So,
what cable do I need to get this working? If I hook it up on the SCSI
chain, SCSI Probe will see it, and if I click on it in SCSI Probe the
printer makes some noise...however, it doesn't seem to be able to print
>From that connection (unlike the powerbooks which print out to the
network over the SCSI connection).

Anyone have ideas on how to get this hooked up? What cable do I need
and where can I find it? Does it need a different driver than the
LaserWriter driver in 7.5.5? If so, what and where do I get it? Also,
one of the others who looked at it at the sale mentioned an
update/upgrade that could be done on the printer...to what? Advantages?

Anyone have a manual for this model?

All help appreciated...by direct email is best and I can summarize to
the list if need be. Thanks in advance.

That generally means that there's something wrong with the communication
with your modem. Check to make sure you have the proper modem init string,
that your modem is connected properly and turned on, and that you have the

Hi,

I'm compiling a list of all Internet client and server software that
will still run on a black and white 68k Mac. The classic and below.

I have the feeling that Classics would make excellent low volume
servers, and you can probably run a web client on them too.

If you run any net related stuff on your old Mac, please send me a mail
stating what software, which version, commercial/shareware, a URL or
FTP site, what MacOS version it runs under, or anything you think is
useful.

If I get enough to make a decent list (I've already got a small list)
I'll make a webpage out of it.

Please send your mail with the three letter 68k somewhere in the

Thanks,

Here's an odd one I found yesterday. I am running a Performa 6300CD which

The specific error message is essential, as is the version and type of the
driver, etc.

Without that information, about all one can say is, "Sounds like something
is broken," which is, I suspect, less illuminating than you'd hoped.

Some other questions:

Did anything change in your system prior to the printing problems
occurring? If so, does undoing that change eliminate the printing problems?

Does the problem affect all MS Word documents or just some? Is there
anything in common among the ones that fail [some font, or a particular
image]?

Do other applications print? For example, can you print a Finder window,
or a >3 page document from SimpleText?

I seem to be having a problem with the 350mb hard drive on my powermac

The drive came with the unit, and would like to know if anyone has come
across a similar problem, and what possible fixes I may have.

David,

Scanners and Zips are two of the most troublesome devices to chain
successfully.
Good quality, matching cables are a must. Apple cables or cables from APS are
both extremely well made. I suspect that as long as there are no SCSI ID number
conflicts, then your trouble probably comes under the umbrella of "termination
or termination power" problems.

I'm confused by your reference to the Chooser, however. The SCSI ID on the Zip
is set by a toggle switch next to the termination switch on the back of the
device. The Chooser shouldn't even show the Zip or the scanner, let alone their
SCSI IDs. Likewise your Scanner's SCSI ID is probably set by a switch on the
device somewhere.

APS Technologies' "Digital Active Termination" has solved problems on several
SCSI chains I've set up, and others on various Mac lists recommend their "DAT"
technology. If you get their SCSI Sentry (I or II, talk to their tech support
and get a recommendation), that may well clear up your problems.

Disclaimer: I have no connection to APS, merely a customer.

APS Technologies:

1-800-304-7416

If you don't have it, SCSI Probe is a control panel that will scan your SCSI
chain, identify devices and their IDs and mount or unmount them. You can
find it at

Good luck,

Subject: SIMMpler way of adding Ram?

Hi!

I'm using a Performa 630CD with only one slot to add SIMMs...

In order to add the 8 Meg SIMM I recently acquired, I had to remove a 4 meg
SIMM first!!!

So, instead of having the desired 16 meg total, I'm only at 12 megs (Ram
Doubler notwithstanding).

Does anyone know of a hardware device which creates a new spot for adding
SIMMs?
Perhaps some sort of SIMM extension device...

I seem to have heard of such a thing in the past...

Anyone know where such a thing might exist? Anyone know if they're reliable?

Thanks in advance!

Subject: TCP/IP problems under 7.5 on Performa 5200. Help!

When I upgraded my Performa 5200CD to system 7.5 I began having
problems with TCP/IP over PPP. Some applications, like telnet,
continue to work fine, but others, like Netscape, Internet Explorer
and Fetch have been crippled. When I fire up Netscape 3.0, for
example, it can load a bit of a page, but then stalls and eventually
complains about a broken pipe. I suspect that the management of
connections is screwed up so that Netscape is listening on one
connection but the remote application is writing to another -- so the
mac decides the pipe is broken eventually. Things worked fine before
the system upgrade. Also, why isn't Open Transport available on this
model Mac?

Details: Performa 5200CD with 40meg, System 7.5.3 revision 2, pactcp
2.0.6, latest PPP, Netscape 3.0.

Subject: To Be or not to Be

Rumor mill works overtime as Be takes on giants of computing
10/15/96 Yomiuri Shimbun

To Be or not to Be--that is the overused pun. To everyone who hasn't been
under a rock these past few weeks, "Be" is one of the most talked about
goings-ons in the computer industry in quite some time. It also offers a
unique opportunity of observing Web-culture in full swing, as rumors change
on an almost daily basis.

Be is a new computer and operating system. Be, Inc. is led by Jean-Louis
Gassee, former president of Apple Computer's product division. Based on two
Power PC processors, the machine, called a "BeBox," is fast. According to
reports from recent demonstrations, it's able to kick out multimedia and
graphics displays that would cause other machines to crash and, quite
possibly, burn with envy (http://www.be.com).

At the Be newsgroup (news:comp.sys.be), one user wondered what to do in
order to impress colleagues with his newly acquired BeBox. The answers
offered amounted to allowing the machine to run between four and eight video
and three graphic displays at once, with the dual processors still not
reaching capacity. The video displays can be dragged around the desktop and
resized while the video is playing, without skipping a beat.

What does this mean for the current computer of choice for graphics and
video, the Mac? Enter the rumors. The rumors, to be fair, haven't all come
>From denizens of the Net. The conventional media has done its share, witness
an article from USA Today that Apple is trying to buy Be (http://www.usatoday.
com/life/cyber/tech/ct246.htm). It includes the damning sentence, "Some
inside Apple have concluded that the BeOS delivers what Apple doesn't expect
to deliver until 1999."

Of course, at the current rate of OS development at Apple, few would be
surprised. Nobody seems to know just when the new OS will be ready--if ever.
Which leaves at least one Mac clone-maker ripe for Be.

Many recent Be demonstrations have been done on machines made by Power
Computing, a Mac Clone company. Power Computing will begin to offer machines
preinstalled with the BeOS from the beginning of next year. Users will be
able to switch from Mac OS to BeOS, so long as they have a separate hard
drive for each and don't try running the two simultaneously.

So is Mac trying to buy Be? Will Be be bought? No one really knows for
sure, and the people who know aren't talking. Much.

Which has led to the rumors. RD Novo of the Infinite Loop Rangers (http://
www.ambrosiasw.com/AppleSauce) said rumors on the Web are like a high-tech
version of the children's game, telephone. "By the 10th retelling of the news,
it's become something else entirely. That is, of course, the nature of the
most interesting of rumors."

Novo would know. His page, "AppleSauce," is in the interesting rumor
business. "And when you're supposed to be on the cutting edge of rumor,
you're supposed to know more than the other guy. For the most part (since
there's a real dearth of hard fact in this case) that means coming up with
likely scenarios and airing them as speculation."

The key word here is speculation. As Novo points out, the nature of the
Internet is that everyone becomes a self-appointed expert and suddenly has a
forum for expression. "All you need is a catchy name (like, oh, say,
"AppleSauce" or the "Infinite Loop Rangers") and a catchy slogan (like, oh,
say, "Apple intelligence and wit") and the cojones to publish what you hear/
think," Novo said.

When speculation begins to mingle with rumor, the result is what we've
seen on the Web these past few weeks. Whether or not Apple is really thinking
of buying Be has become beside the point. Clearly, Be has awakened something
in the computer world that has been lacking.

"We haven't seen Mac fans this excited in a long time," Novo said.
Including Novo--Novo's page, and a good portion of the discussion surrounding
Be, has been in support of a bold move by Apple.

Some Mac fans see Apple as a dying company, in need of a brand new
approach to stay alive. Others just think it would better computing--and
better business--to use the Be approach.

Be's system is neither as bulky nor as complex as the Mac OS or Windows
95. In fact, the developer's manual is around 700 pages--far smaller than the
24 volumes one needs to consult for Mac programming. The paperwork for
Windows developers, it has been said only half-jokingly, won't even fit in
one room. It's a back-to-basics approach, and it's got the online world
buzzing with excitement.

For another Be news story, check Austin 360's "BeBox takes on computing
Goliaths" (http://www.statesman.com/tech/technews/10oct/07/be7.htm).

Links to the most recent can be found at several Be home pages. One of
the better ones is "BeYond" (http://www.skip.adb.gu.se/beyond/). "BeFirst"
also offers news link and information, although there seems to be a little
less here (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/befirst/). "The Betoken
Vault" was created on a BeBox, and offers more news and information (http://
www.cybercity.dk/users/ccc4485/bezone home.html).

For now, most of the pages are a bit technical in nature. Many of them
are run by developers eager to work on a BeBox. Even if the pages offer
little information for the layman, one thing is clear: at least for now, the
BeBox is inspiring a following and devotion quite similar to that of the
original Macs. And they only have around 3000 units in circulation--with most
of them belonging to developers.

Take a look at Norwegian developer Stig Olsen's home page (http://www.ifi.
uio.no/-stigo/bebox.html). Olsen no longer updates this page--he's too busy--
but rather than take the page down he decided to let it "die a quiet death."
As testament to his devotion to the BeBox, Olsen includes a link to a fuzzy
picture of him, clearly ecstatic, wearing his new "Be" T-shirt. Olsen's page
remains useful for it's basic information and question-and-answers pages on
Be.

Even Japan is not immune from the Be craze. At least two pages devoted to
the BeBox have sprung up on this side of the Pacific. One is "The BeBox (Pre)
Users' Home in Japan," (http://www.bekkoame.or.jp/-rasman/be-q/). The other
is at http://www2.gol.com/users/noah/bebox/.

Finally, for those who either can't wait or don't want to buy a new
machine, there is something of an alternative. Greg Landweber and Edward Voas,
the same people who created "Aaron," a shareware extension that allows Macs
to look like the Mac desktop of the future, have created "BeView" (10,
dollars http://greg.math.harvard/edu/). As its name would imply, "BeView"
allows the Mac interface to look like the one shown in the screenshots at the
Be home page. Just don't expect to edit eight videos simultaneously.

Dear Digex readers,
My internet provider gives me cgi-bin access on my web pages.

Am I under the correct impression that it is impossible to write cgi

I have the O'reilly CGI book, and it too only talks about access counters in
the
context of server side includes. It does not say what to do
when they do not exist. I even do a chmod u+x on the .pl file it gives as an

I've chmod the data file and the html file to 777, and still nothing happens
