Subject: [*] ChatNet 2.0.8

ChatNet provides the simplest Macintosh interface to chat and send files on the
Internet or a Local Area Network. ChatNet offers two modes for chat. The
AppleTalk Mode allows multiple Macintosh computers running ChatNet to chat or
send files on a Local Area Network, with or without a Server. The IRC Mode
allows
chat and file transfer through an Internet Relay Chat Server. ChatNet acts as a
client program providing a button oriented graphical interface for all IRC
functions. There is no need to know any IRC commands.

ChatNet's simple interface will be familiar to anyone who uses major online
services and quickly learned by those who haven't experienced network
communications. Users interact via public and private conferences, send private
messages, and transfer files to each other.

ChatNet can provide security and control over the entire Chat environment as
everyone is concerned about the possibility of children encountering unsuitable
material or conversation, especially on the Internet. ChatGuardian and
ChatWatcher preference settings give complete control over the ChatNet
environment from completely open to very restrictive. ChatGuardian gives you
control over channel access and message content by screening out words and
phrases that are preselected. ChatWatcher keeps a log of all user activity. IRC
Server access can also be controlled.

System Requirements:
ChatNet requires any Macintosh computer (Mac SE or newer) running System 7.0 to
7.5.x. ChatNet is a fat binary application that is Accelerated for Power
Macintosh computers. RAM memory of 750K is recommended with a minimum setting
of
550K. Disk space of 2 Megabytes should be available for the application and
support files.

For IRC Mode (Internet Relay Chat) you must have access to the Internet
through a
direct Internet connection or a SLIP or PPP connection through an Internet
service provider (check your local phone directory for Internet service
providers
in your area). Your Macintosh must also have MacTCP or Open Transport network
driver installed.

For AppleTalk Mode, a network must be LocalTalk or EtherTalk compatible, and
AppleTalk must be set to active in Chooser. There must be other computers
running
ChatNet on your network for you to chat or send files.

Support on the World Wide Web:
Visit the ELS, Inc. web site for the latest ChatNet information, to download
the
most up-to-date version, to register ChatNet online, or just to provide
feedback
or ask questions.

Subject: [*] Extension Overload

Extension Overload reviews about 150 extensions that are commonly found in
the Extensions Folder on every Mac. For those who do not know much about
extensions, this program gives you some insight so you can decide which
ones are necessary for your computer and which are not.

Located in the Extensions Folder in your System Folder, extensions perform
a number of activities on your Mac to make it more functional. However,
some extensions will do NOTHING but EAT UP MEMORY and it is sometimes
difficult to know how much memory an extension will use (25K ? 105K ? 88K ?
800K ? .... ) because extension memory usage is volatile: extensions
increase their memory when they are in use and shrink back when they are
not.

An extension file may take up only a little DISK SPACE, (maybe 13k) or as
high as 1 MB or more. Worse, BUGS in an extension can also crash and SLOW
DOWN your computer.

The best way of dealing with problematic extensions is to drag them into
the trash and dispose of them. But how do you know which ones are helping
and which are hindering your machine's performance? Enter Extension
Overload, a helpful database that provides valuable information at your
fingertips about some of the more common extensions you may have on your
machine. It can help you if you are unsure of what a particular extension
is for or what it does, and will help you decide whether you want it on
your machine or not. Apple provides many extensions that you don't always
need as an option and service to the customer. For example, if your machine
is not on a network, then you may not want the Network Extension installed
on your machine. If you've disposed of the extension and connect to a local
network at a later date, you can always recover that extension from the
original system disk.

Extension Overload is helpful to those in the following situations:

* Anyone keep recovering from a crash.
* Users looking to increase RAM by cutting back the system's chunk of it.
* Users looking for more disk space.
* Users who have recently bought a new or used machine and don't know what
those mysterious things are in there ... or what they belong to.
* Experienced users who may not be familiar with some extension functions
or owners.
* Experienced users who may want to expand their extension vocabulary.
* New users just learning their way around the machine.
* Anyone who wants to know more about Macintosh extensions.

Latinitas is Latin language software for four common series of Latin
textbooks: the Oxford and Cambridge series, Wheelock and the Ecce Romani
series. It comprises over 1250 root words from which Latinitas "thinks
up" a different combination of root and ending every time. The student
is then asked to grammatically describe the inflected word. This fully
functional demonstration version will launch 5 times. You may purchase a
complete version from the author for $25 U.S.

an application that helps you to learn these patterns and refresh your
knowledge
about the rules for the inflection of verbs and nouns in a foreign language.
The
program has many other useful features to help you to learn or research a
foreign language.

The program lets you create a database of verbs or nouns in a foreign
language.
You can easily construct the inflection patterns (rules) for words that are
regular. You can include other information about each word, such as a
translation, grammar characteristics, comments, etc. in a convenient form.
Comments are useful for storing examples of the use of the word, or for
recording other information. The facility for merging databases makes it easy
to
share comments with other users. The program has an exercise window. It
automatically generates exercises to allow you to practise inflection or
translation. You can collect the words that you have already learned and let
the
program generate exercises just for this group of words. You can also identify
many other groups of words (and collect them in classes) to use them in
exercises or for browsing. The program has asynchronous sound support to
associate the sound samples with words. Examination support is built into the
program. This includes reports for students and reports for the teacher on the
performance of students.

WeatherTracker provides an easy-to-use interface to the Internet weather
servers. It requires a 68020 or higher processor with System 7.0 and
MacTCP or OpenTransport. WeatherTracker displays current information for
any of over 1000 cities worldwide in three different formats.

For cities in North America, temperature, barometric pressure, winds,
current conditions, local forecasts, and climatic data are updated hourly.
Coastal cities in the United States also have near shore marine forecasts
available. Cities outside North America are limited to temperature and
conditions, updated several times a day.

Changes in version 2.2.4:
- Kagi shareware payment system begun
- fixed problems with some NY cities
- updated to CodeWarrior 10

WeatherTracker is shareware, $15 US. This evaluation copy does save your
preferences. Registered users will receive a key to unlock this feature.
Registration now takes place via Kagi, a third-party shareware processing

Could file sharing have anything to do with this? I notice that when I
have file sharing on (even though the Zip disk isn't shared), I can
highlight my Zip disk's name and overwrite it, but as soon as I hit return,
the name reverts to its previous state. If I turn file sharing off, the
problem goes away.

Free ? Most likeky you have a demo version that will expire in one month,
then you will ahve to buy it. Better be prepared, in case you don't want

Yes. I think that too. I even wrote the suggestion to Claris web site.
Why won't everyone who thinks like this do it ?

Also it misses the possibility to sort every window by name of the

works in IN and OUT boxes, but not in the folders... I really miss this.

Yes. And cheap. But please let's bug Claris with our wanted features

If Eudora Pro handles mailboxes the same way as the freeware version does,
you just need to copy the directory as well. It has the same name as the
mailbox itself, followed the extension ".toc". I regularly do this that way.

Subject: Hellish Zip folders

Hi everyone,

A strange fenomenon is happenning on some of my Zip disks.
Suddenly, when copying (or creating) a new folder into a populated disk,
the new folder has the correct new name, but its icon is the SYSTEM folder
icon or the same ZIP icon. Opening it reveals the system (or the root Zip
disk, in the other case).

Moreover, trying to trash the damn thing just causes one of the
following messages to appear: "The command could not be completed, because
it is locked" (Duh?!), or "The command could not be completed, because it
cannot be copied into itself" (Ehem).
I even made the effort of copying the entire polluted Zip to my HD,
and writing it all to a fresh Zip. Nada! Same folders from hell just appear
(and the most funny thing is that they just accumulate there, as there is
no way of getting em out).

At first I dismissed it as a 'one bad disk problem' (which could
have been caused by all sorts of reasons), but the problem persisted and
accoured on another disks. My only clue is that it seems to happen on
populated disks (70%+), but then again, it did not happen on all of them.

Tech info: PowerMac 6100/66, Sys 7.5, SCSI Zip100.

Questions:

1. Are there any shareware disk-checking / diagnostic tools that
can get through the Zip file system?

2. What can be done?

Thanks for your time,
Ariel

Probably the second. I think it may be a "ROM slot", but I did not find
anything about it in the various information sources published by Apple.
I had a IIci for the office, it had a cache card installed, and a

This company was first called "Second Wave", and afterwards "Third Wave",
but I haven't seen anything from them for a long time now. If I am not
mistaken, they had some relations to MacProducts USA which now does

Well, I just tried to downlaod them to check it out, and my connection
keeps getting reset by the server. Oh well.

I would imagine that these two pieces are a segmented self-extracting
archive, the segments being MacBinary format, Binhexed, or both. The first
thing to try would be to drag the two things onto Stuffit Expander. If
that does nothing, then describe in greater detail exactly what those two
files are named, etc. and I might be able to provide another option.

The easiest workaround might be to send an email to [email protected] and
request OpenDoc DR6. You'll get at least two CDs, which contain OpenDoc
1.1, CyberDog 1.1, and a bunch of other stuff [including System 7.5.5

Subject: Mac reading PC files on PC Zip disk

I apoogize for the length, but I want to give you as much information as
possible. This problem is very interesting. The problem appears only on
the Mac side. No problems on the PC side.

I use a parallel port Zip drive to 'back up' files from a PC at work. What
I actually do is drag the files (several large directories at a time) onto
the Zip icon in the File Manager (Win 3.11).

When I insert the Zip disk into my Mac's Zip drive, most of the files are
okay. There are, however about a half dozen or so that behave very
strangely:

On the Mac desktop, in icon view, some folders (directories) have a system
logo on them (i.e., they are 'system folders'). Some of these folders will
be 1 level down from the root directory, some 2, 3, 4, etc. When I open
one of these folders, the new window displays the root directory (though
doing a command click on the title bar yields the correct path). Opening
through this new window, creates a recursive opening of the root directory.

Drag-copying the 'system folder' to the Mac's hard drive yeilds a normal
folder, which is empty (though the real folder on the PC may contain other
folders and files--in one case, about 20 megs worth).

Trashing the 'system folder' from the Zip disk is impossible--well I
suspect it is. I can drag it to trash, of course, but when I empty it,
Finder cannot count all the items (remember that recursive opening problem
above?--for the heck of it, I watched for about a minute--it got to 5000
items to delete and it was still flying!).

On the PC side, that same 'system folder' opens quite normally (Windows or
DOS), all files and directories intact. I have checked the disk with
Norton's for Windows (and DOS). There are no abnormalities.

If I drag, from File Manager, the 'system folder' from its depth on the
hard drive to the equivalent depth on the Zip disk, the same thing happens.
If I drag it to the root directory of the Zip disk, it is a normal folder.

Any ideas what is happening? Any suggestions? While not needed, it is
nice to be able to take the files from the PC and work with them on the Mac
in crunch times (I keep one copy of the back ups with me, one in the safe).

Subject: Problems, problems, problems....

At home we have a performa 6300 with 8 megs RAM and an apple internal
28.8k modem.

When we had problems recieving and sending faxes (it sent them, but hung
the computer when it tried to disconnect, and wouldn't recieve at all).
When I rang the apple tech support people, they told me to upgrade my
system, and the new versions of appletel and the fax sender would be
installed. I upgraded the system from the 7.5.1 provided on the performa
CD, to 7.5.5. I used the system updater 2.0, which was on the Apple
Internet Connection Kit 1.1.1 CD, and then an updater to 7.5.5 which I
downloaded from the apple ftp site.

The problem is that some of the things that were meant to be installed
weren't. There was no new appletel, no new fax sender, and no energy saver.

What's wrong? I am thinking that maybe it could be because I switched
off all extensions to do the install (like you're supposed to), and
because of this, one extension (I can't remember the name at the moment),
which corrected a problem of the mac being reported as being of the wrong
type, did not run, and the installer didn't think our mac was a powerPC mac.

Also here is something I read somewhere:

While technically Open Transport can work on all 68030, 68040 and Power Macs,
Open Transport does not yet work (and does not get installed) on Power Mac
5200/5300/6200/6300 systems. This is due to a bug in the software
that affects these systems that was not fixed at the time of release.
Open Transport 1.1.1 should be released within 90 days and will include
the needed fix (most likely in the form of a modified version of Apple
Shared Library Manager (ASLM 2.0.1).

My computer is not a power mac, but I think that it is basically the same
as a power mac 6300.

Also, I am wondering how I can do a "clean install" to go back to system
7.5.1.

Ps. I have checked, and our performa is not affected by the "quality
problem" that caused "a small number of performas to hang".

Please reply to me by Email, as well as to the group, so they can benifit
as well.

Apple says that all Apple internal HDs

Since a SCSI chain must be terminated on both ends I deduce

If I connect external SCSI devices to the Mac I have to put

Mirroring displays over a network is possible. The tool we use to do
it is Apple's Network Administrator's Toolkit; many of the functions
require the use of an Appleshare server, but screen sharing does not.

I fear, however, that you have a problem: you mention that the
machines are all connected by an Appletalk network but you don't
mention what kind of hardware. I suspect that you have LocalTalk (the
kind that plugs into the printer port) which is very slow. Any
attempt to share screens over LocalTalk is going to be very painful.
I'm not even sure that ANAT allows screen sharing at this speed.

AppleTalk can be run over faster hardware such as Ethernet (in which
case it is called EtherTalk) and then works just barely acceptably for
screen sharing.

A projector may be your best bet (and they don't come cheap either, as
I suspect you know).

MacUser recently had an exclusive utility called Install Tracker. You drop
an installer application on it, and it "watches" the installation so you
can selectively "uninstall" any part of it later. You'll have to check
MacUser's web site for it; their licensing prevents anyone from posting it
anywhere else...

There's not really a best program for minimizing file sizes. Both of the
programs you mention can do it. You need to be concerned with image format
and color depth more than the program.

Making the image transparent, by itself, doesn't have anything to do with
file size. However, in order to specify transparency, the image needs to
be in "indexed color" format, which is what is really accomplishing the
file size reduction. Here's a primer on what exactly that means.

In a standard, non-indexed color image, each pixel in the image has its
color specified fully. This means that the file contains, for every pixel
in the image, a full RGB [or CMYK, or LAB, or whatever] numeric description
of the color used in that pixel. You may be familiar with the idea of "bit
depth", as in "24-bit TIFF". That "24-bit indicates how many bits of color
data are recorded for each pixel, and thus the amount of storage each pixel
uses.

This format provides the most flexibility, but at the cost of larger file
sizes.

For example, let's look at a sample image:
100 pixels square, solid RGB red.

Format color depth size (bytes)
TIFF 16-bit 33,592
GIF indexed 4,315

These two images appear identical on the screen. The indexed version is
considerably smaller because of the way the file is structured.

An indexed-color file starts with a list of colors that will be used in the
image [the "index"]. Then, the image consists of pixel counts and color
indexes.

Basically, the full RGB file format consists of instructions like this:

"Draw a pixel of 255,0,0. Draw another pixel of 255,0,0. Draw another
pixel of 25,0,0. ..." and so on for all 10000 pixels.

The indexed color image is more like this:

"Here's a list of colors. Now draw 10000 pixels in color 1."

Obviously, the indexed format can be more efficient, but it has
limitations. The full RGB format image could contain 10000 different
colors, since each pixel contains its full color definition.

Indexed color images [or more specifically GIF files, which are the most
commonly used indexed color file format] are generally limited to 256
colors.
If you save an image with more colors than that as a GIF, colors in excess
of the 256 are dithered [they are simulated with mixes of the palette
colors].

So, those tiny images you're seeing are indexed images with very limited
palettes.

Does that help at all?

There are 216 colors common to Netscape's palette on both MacOS and Windows
machines. If you use only those 216 colors, you can be assured that none
of your images will dither when viewed on either program.

Microsoft is distributing a set of what they call "Web Fonts" somewhere on
their site.

The "Font Fairy" site
has listings
of lots-n-lots of fonts available free on the web, on CD, and through other
means.

First, know when to use GIF and when JPEG is more appropriate; there are
a couple of useful FAQs from the Photoshop and
comp.infosystems.www.authoring.images newsgroups.

The best tools for both formats are from BoxTop Software
(www.boxtopsoft.com): PhotoGIF and ProJPEG. These are modestly-priced
Photoshop plug-ins; non-saving demos are available on the website. The
key to making small GIFs is palette reduction (and of course keeping the
overall dimensions down), and PhotoGIF is unsurpassed for this. ProJPEG
has a live preview window, so you can see how much compression any image
will withstand before saving it, rather than save eleventy-three
experimental versions to be sure you've achieved the ultimate
compression/quality balance. These are indispensible professional tools.
SImply using them will teach you much about creating WWW images.

It's Netscape's internal palette, the one it (and MSIE) uses to dither
images on monitors with 256-color video. If you index an image to any
other palette (such as "adaptive"), on 8-bit monitors Netscape will
*further* reduce the colors to match its own palette. The result
typically varies from bizarre to unspeakable. This palette is based on a
6x6x6 color cube, and among the differences between it and the Mac System
palette, the most important is that it has only four grays between black
and white. All of its RGB values are combinations of 0, 51, 102, 153,
204, and 255 (or 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, and FF in hex). The advantage of
compliance with this palette? PC users with 8-bit color will see more or
less the same thing you do, their uncorrected monitor gamma
notwithstanding, without browser-induced dithering or forced recoloring
of non-compliant pixels. For UNIX users, all bets are off--there are
almost as many default palettes as there are UNIX versions of Netscape.

For site vistors with better-than-8-bit color, none of the above
applies--they'll see any color you use. But "safe" means designing for
the bulk of the potential WWW audience, not the select few.

A Web search for "netscape palette" will return numerous sources of both
GIF examples and Photoshop CLUT files. Or, just grab the ones at
www.adobe.com or www killersites.com.

Do you mean fonts to use in Photoshop when making GIFs? Info-Mac has tons
of both TrueType and Type 1 shareware/freeware fonts.

If you mean fonts for displaying your HTML text onscreen, be aware that
will only work if the viewer's machine has that
font installed, and then only if he is using Netscape 3.0 or MSIE 2/3;
otherwise, text will display in each user's default font, as set in the
browser's prefs. Although there's lots of talk about imbedding fonts
within HTML documents, no standard has arisen and none is currently
implemented.

Subject: What's "umimplemented trap"?

"unimplemented trap" means that some piece of software has tried to use a
Mac Toolbox call that doesn't exist.

For example, if a piece of software attempted to talk to an ADB keyboard on
a Mac Plus [which has no ADB], an unimplemented trap error would result,
because the Mac Plus would have no idea what those Toolbox calls meant.

The most likely explanation for you problem is that QuickTime, or some
component of it, is not correctly installed or working properly.

Does this happen with any movie, or just some particular ones? Maybe the
ones that show the problem are trying to use a special decompressor of
something that is not installed.

Another possibility is that these movies are QuickTime VR or QuickTime 3D
movies, rather than generic QuickTime movies. In this case, you'd need to
install either or both of those.
