In this issue, we report on a new version of RealAudio and an MPEG
extension for QuickTime 2.5. We also welcome a new sponsor and go in depth
with a review and comparison of Eudora Pro and Eudora Light. Adam follows
up on last week's article about soft-power Macs, and Matt Neuburg rounds
out the issue with a thoughtful essay about the state of automation on
today's Macs, complete with a comparison of macro programs we've reviewed
over the past several issues.

Subject: (Q) Find File extension conflict?
Several Info-Mac readers kindly replied to my posting concerning the
operation of the Find File command. In summary, there are the 7.5 built-in
function and a separate application installed under the Apple Menu. The
former allows one to find files meeting selection criteria one-at-a-time.
The latter presents a summary window showing all files that satisfy the
selection criteria. Several of my respondents also pointed out that, with
the Find File extension installed, executing command-f should launch the
newer application, rather than the more primitive built-in function.
I do have the Find File extension in my System Folder: Extensions folder.
However, my problem is that even though I also have the Find File
application (which works fine when selected directly), command-f still only
launches the primitive built-in function. Has anyone else encountered this
problem? I'm running System 7.5.5 on a Power Mac 7500. Is there a known
conflict between the Find File extension and some other software?
Thanks for your help!

You're right. What the AppleGuide file for the PPP control panel doesn't
mention is that the "create a connect script" is found by opening the
*Modem* control panel, and then opening *it's* AppleGuide. (It's the second
item on the list.)

Microsoft's free "Internet Assistant" for Word will do this. Save to disk
as "source" in Navigator, open with Word/Internet Assistant, then save as a
regular word file. Not sure all of the formatting will stay but I just gave
it a quick try and it seemed to work.

Elliot,
System 7.5.3 and later have the ability to move selected items to the
Trash, but Apple has not enabled this feature. Fortunately, a former Apple
employee named Nevin Liber has written a tiny extension that activates this
(and other) hidden features of the Finder. Here are a few sentences from
the Read Me...
------------------------------------
Finder Extensions Enabler 1.1.0 notes
Finder Extensions Enabler (formerly known as Finder Alias Extensions
Enabler) is a system extension that enables a number of hidden features to
the Finder:
1. If you control drag an item, it will create an alias instead of
moving/copying that item (System 7.1 Pro or later).
2. Reveal Original (Command-R) menu item is added to the File menu: if
you have an alias selected and choose Reveal Original, the folder that
holds the original item is opened and the original item is selected (System
7.5 or later).
3. Control delete will move the selected item to the trash (System 7.5.3
or later).
[..snip..]
------------------------------------
I don't know if it's in the Info-Mac archives, but you can get it from his
home page at...
By the way, even though the author worked at Apple, this extension is not
an Apple product. However, I've been using it for weeks without any
problems. It uses negligible amounts or RAM according to both the author
(and Conflict Catcher 3 which reports such things).

A while back I posted a question concerning viewing avi movies on a Mac. I

Viewing AVI movies is a built-in feature of Microsoft Web browser. Also,
the Mazilla application/plug-in gives you that capability.

There is only ever a single MagicCookie file; cookies you accept add lines
to that file.; similar in that way to your Bookmarks file. It's a plain
text file, so you can open it up with any text editor and see what's in
there. Actually pretty boring stuff. Here's mine:
----
# Netscape HTTP Cookie File
# http://www.netscape.com/newsref/std/cookie_spec.html
# This is a generated file! Do not edit.

.adobe.com TRUE / FALSE xxx INTERSE xxx.xxx.xx.xxXXX
homepages.mcnet.ch FALSE / FALSE xxx xxx xxx
----
The "x"s are my IP, various usernames and passwords [which are apparently
automatically assigned ones, as none of them are familiar in the least] and
other apparently random numbers, deleted so no one can access my medical
records or whatever evil is currently associated with these. I suspect
that most of the numbers [which have the same format from line to line] are
the date and time the cookie was sent.
In any case, the suggestion above won't work. Netscape will overwrite your
phony cookie file with a new valid one. As a test, I created a BBEdit file
in my Netscape prefs folder called "MagicCookie", which contained "this is
junk". I then launched Netscape, went to http://www.adobe.com [which asked
if it could set a cookie - I said yes], then quit Netscape. Opening my
MagicCookie file with BBEdit reveals that it now contains:
-----
# Netscape HTTP Cookie File
# http://www.netscape.com/newsref/std/cookie_spec.html
# This is a generated file! Do not edit.
.adobe.com TRUE / FALSE xxx INTERSE xxxXXX
-----
No trace of my "this is junk" line. BTW, it's still a BBEdit file.
Now, If I edit the file to contain just that header [everything up to "Do
not edit."], lock it in the Finder, then repeat the experiment, when I look
at the cookie file after quitting Netscape it is unchanged.
Then someone else offered:
>I am using Cookie Monster 1.5 -- guess from your favourite info-mac mirror
>site -- that kills all cookies when you shut down/reboot.
This will indeed go delete the "MagicCookie" file with every boot.
However, if like me you don't want to add yet another thing to your startup
items folder, you may want to try just locking the MagicCookie file.
I have heard rumors that doing so may cause Netscape to crash on quit. I
haven't seen this behavior, which is not to say it doesn't occur, just that
it's never happened to me.

Check out "Hidden Finder Features" or one of a number of similar control
panels found on Info-Mac that opens a feature of System 7.5 where the
cmd-delete key combo will move selected items to the trash. You must empty
the trash yourself. These control panels also have some other features.
Another handy little item is "Trash Bag." This extension creates a small
folder on the desktop that is automatically emptied to the trash upon the
next startup. Works great as a web browser destination for cache files.

I use two such utilities:
Hidden Finder Features -enables Apple's hidden....(you get the gist), one of
which is to use the Apple-Delete key to move selected items to the Trash
The other is a Control Strip Item called 'Trash It' which deletes any item
dropped on to it.
I haven't found a single utility to do both yet, but I'm quite happy not to-
I recall an incident when a friend was over at my house;Iwas at the computer

"deleting 200 odd files" Well-to this day I don't know what those files were,

Hi,
as of last Friday, my Mac has decided it does not have enough memory to
open my HD icon (44 elements), or if it gets this far, it won't open my
system folder. Or it opens them but when I switch to the Finder, I am told
there is not enough memory and I must quit some applications and/or close
windows. Click OK to dismiss the Alert Box and it reappears faster than you
can reach the window'S close box. That's with 56 Meg of RAM (the real thing
not VM) and up to 45 Meg left. What gives? Of course, this only started
after I installed Pointcast Beta 0.9

Two weeks ago, I wouldn't have thought so, but...
My dad's Performa 476 recently failed to boot; it would come up to the
blank gray screen that appears right before the happy mac, and stop. He
called SOS-APPL, and they suggested a dead battery. I thought they were
nuts, as I had never seen that behavior caused by a dead battery, but he
replaced the lithium battery on the motherboard and lo and behold it works
fine. Learn something every day!

It sounds like your Mac's battery is dead. The battery is used to operate
the clock chip and PRAM (Parameter RAM) while the main power is turned off.
Ask your local Apple dealer / service center to check the battery and
replace it if necessary.
