Subject: [*] 500_Cards 1.0.1; a card game

Hi All!

This is the (long awaited) release of 500 Cards version 1.0.1!

What IS 500 Cards?
It's an implementation of the card game 500 in which two partnerships try
to be the first to score over 500 (and definitely not under -500!). The game
lasts as many hands as it takes one side to win (or loose) and each hand
consists of 10 tricks (in which each player plays a card in turn). Each hand
starts with a bidding phase to decide who is the bidding partnership and what
is turmps (one of the four Suits or No Trumps - neither form of Misere is
implemented).

With some handwaving you could think of 500 as a kinda sorta earlier simpler
Contract Bridge, kinda, sorta? More relaxed, fun and social though?

This release features:
- the FIXED "why-doesn't-it-say-Spades" bug on 68000-based Macs
- a more robust Preferences dialog
- A Preferences Dialog (and File!)
- Player name
- Computer levels (Safe, Brave, Reckless, Frenzied)
- Your-Turn indicator type
- Order the suit are held in your hand (two options)
- Bonus for all 10 tricks?
- A safety on the "Away" button during bidding.
- Better low memory handling (and Advice!)
- Better card counting and End-Game bidding!
- Misc UI bugs fixed.

Subject: [*] Audiodeck 2.0 -- Audio CD player

A U D I O D E C K 2 . 0

What is it?

Audiodeck is an audio CD remote player for Apple CD-ROM drives. Audiodeck
also works with non-Apple drives which are 100% compatible with Apple's
drivers. System 7 and Color QuickDraw are required for Audiodeck to run.

Why should you use it?

This is a good question since a very nice looking AppleCD Audio Player is
included with CD-ROM Setup 5.0 and later, possibly already installed on
your Macintosh. On the surface, Audiodeck 2.0 may bear a passing
resemblance to AAP with its 3-D buttons and sleek overall design. However,
a great deal of subtle and not-so-subtle features are exclusive to
Audiodeck:

o can automatically play inserted CD's,
o can force internal CD input and enable playthrough,
o plays adjacent tracks in shuffle and program mode without skipping a beat,
o disable or enable individual tracks in shuffle mode,
o uses the existing disc and track titles of CD Remote Programs,
o but also extends the disc information database with new categories,
o and individual, custom disc settings (i.e.. volume),
o gratuitous Balloon Help for just about everything; plus much, much more.

But remember, always "Read The Fabulous Manual" before using a software.

Enjoy,
...David

Subject: [*] CyberNation 1.1; an arcade game

Here is CyberNation 1.1, an update to the previous version. CN 1.1 fixes a
bug which caused some enemy characters to explode spontaneously...

If you were one of the early downloaders of CyberNation, you'll have
noticed that the "Help" button in the About box doesn't work. This was
fixed in an update to the archives which, by my mistake, was also numbered
1.0.

Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy CyberNation. It works on any Mac with about
1.5MB of free memory and a B&W or 16/256-color/grayscale screen.

Subject: [*] Mazyrinthe 1.0; a game of mazes

Mazyrinthe by Patrice Audet

You are now waking up in a room surrounded with walls and the only
thing you
can do is choose one of several doors... You are in the Mazyrinthe!!! It's
been built for a single goal : amusement of his conceptor... (Maybe it's for
a little torture game too...)

A strange (and strong) headache brings up some memories : you were
talking
with Kaltar, the Druid, one of your most trusted friend when a big creature
jumps right in your face before you could do anything!!! This animal is half
alive, half dead, it's been named Targes... After he threw your head (in
fact, the whole body with it...) in the wall, you fell in a deep deep "sleep"
to wake up in a maze, the Mazyrinthe.
Your only chance to stay alive now is to find a way out... But to
achieve
your goal, you will need some sort of a magic support. First, you'll have to
find the PowerSpheres... Those are strange artifacts made of an ancient
material that looks like marble. Nobody knew their existence. But now WE'VE
found them! We did use them to build this maze. We will use them to drive you
crazy as well!!! (and other peoples too...)... You have two minutes to find
your way through the maze before the room you are in gets intoxicated by
verbur, a powerful poison that leaves you in great pain...

Signed : Katar and Peros. Targes subjects and affected to public relations.

Mazyrinthe is "Trashware"... If you dont like it, you can throw it
in the
garbage my written consent... It's an E-MailWare too... You can throw me
anything you want, from your commentaries to your best jokes , reports on
software conflicts, remarks or even some of your turkey that you are keeping
in your fridge from last years thanksgiving;-))
You can put this game everywhere you want on your desktop on one
condition :
PLAY WITH IT!!!

I can't guarantee the results because those are my first steps in
the great
world of Macintosh programming.. It's eating a lot of memory, it's not fast
at all and it has some risks of auto-destruction if used on a full moon
night, five minutes from midnight, not far from a cemetary with five thousand
other peoples eating chocolate cake... It works on my IIsi without too much
problems. Tell me if it doesn't work on your Macintosh ( I would be honoured
to take your 5000$ PowerMac 8100AV to let you play my game on my IIsi for a
while... Maybe forever? )

Network Security Guard, is an AppleTalk based utility that will scan
multiple zones for the presence of Macintosh servers and compile reports on
the security of those servers. This utility was designed as a tool to
combat the alarming rise in software piracy and as a safeguard against
accidental sharing of confidential materials. It may also be used to
explore an AppleTalk network to uncover all available servers and files.

The reports provided by Network Security Guard include the following data:
- computers which have file sharing enabled
- servers which allow guest access
- a list of files accessible to guests
- a report, alerting you to suspicious configurations on the network
- a list of servers with easily guessed passwords

Other features include:
- the ability to schedule your checks to minimize network load
- a weekly check feature to keep tabs of a network
- an e-mail interface so reports can be e-mailed to a user
- the ability to search for specific file names on the network
- Online help

Subject: [*] SkyChart2000.0v2.1demo.sea.hqx

Dear astronomer:

SkyChart 2000.0 version 2.1 is a new astronomy/spaceflight simulator for
Macintosh computers. It was written for both amateur astronomers as well as
professional educators and researchers, and it contains a number of features
not
found in any other program of its kind. With SkyChart 2000.0, you can:

* Track satellites and space shuttle missions using standard NASA satellite
elements.
* View the outer planets and their moons from a passing Voyager spacecraft.
* Reproduce eclipses, transits, and occultations from anywhere in the solar
system.
* Observe the constellations from star systems hundreds of light years away.
* Watch the stars move over thousands or millions of years.
* Witness the impact of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter from the comet
itself.
* Experience relativity as you approach the speed of light on an interstellar
voyage.

SkyChart 2000.0 is extremely accurate; it uses the same algorithms as the
Astronomical Almanac implemented in extended floating point precision. It is
recommended that you run the program on a machine with a math coprocessor
(FPU),
although a non-FPU version that will run on any Macintosh is also provided. A
native PowerPC version is also currently under development, and will be
provided
free of charge to registered users. For the serious user, SkyChart 2000.0's
computing engine is also provided, as a portable source code library written in
standard C.

SkyChart 2000.0 is also extremely easy to use, with an intuitive Macintosh
interface. For instance, you can rearrange or create new constellations by
clicking and dragging from star to star. You can easily add new objects to the
program's database, and adjust a host of other user-customizable options.

The demo distribution of the program is free. When you are ready to upgrade to
the complete distribution, register your copy by sending a check or money order
for $29.95 to the author at the address given below. Your will receive the
following:

* The complete 10,000-object database, containing the entire Yale Bright Star
Catalog, hundreds of deep-sky objects, every major planet and moon in the solar
system, plus dozens of asteroids and comets.
* The complete illustrated manual.
* The portable C source code library comprising SkyChart 2000.0's computing
engine.
* Future upgrades and updates, including the native PowerPC version now under
development. Additionally, your name will be added to the SkyChart 2000.0
mailing list.

I hope you enjoy using SkyChart 2000.0, and find it to be a useful and
educational tool as well. Any comments, suggestions, or questions are welcome.

Hello!

I would like to share a neat way to get rid of the "I-like-to-drag-and-drop-

It is really just a blank icon; transparent, nothing there. I put it on all

I made this icon for the benefit of those not familiar with ResEdit or

Honorably mentioned in the 1993 MacUser Shareware Awards, favorably

addicted... it's Tetris Max! Tetris Max is an outstanding implementation
of the classic game Tetris, featuring beautiful 256-color artwork, an
original music soundtrack, awesome sound effects, and more. Find out why
many people say Tetris Max is the best Tetris they've ever played.
Tetris Max is $10 shareware (free for those people who've paid for
previous versions).

If you enjoy Tetris Max and play it often, PLEASE send in the $10
shareware fee. It is not very much compared to the cost of a commercial
game, and it motivates me to keep improving Tetris Max as well as to
work on new games. By even the most optimistic estimate, less than 2% of
the people who have older versions of Tetris Max have actually sent in
the shareware fee. If you play, please pay. Upgrades to new versions of
Tetris Max are always free for registered users. Those who register will
also be kept informed of new version releases, as well as the releases
of any new products.

Version 2.3.1 adds the ability to both "drop" and "push" pieces with
separate keys, fixes a few bugs, and includes a new mailing address for

Try checking out a local video/hi-fi store and checking out SVHS connectors
which are apparently the same style as the ADB connectors.

Let's see. Your options are (1) buy a new 500-series PB, or 280- or 280c
Duo; (2) wait for System 7.5 later this summer; (3) pick up the latest version
of PBTools.

Please Help!

I would like to download postscript fonts and files to my
LaserWriter 310. The 310 is a postscript printer, and
Apple does advertise it having the capability of accepting
downloaded postscript fonts/files. But the only utility supplied
to do this is the LaserWriter Font Utility which only works
with networkable printers. The 310 does NOT have built-in localtalk.

I also attempted to you HP's Laserjet Utility and something called
SendPS from one of the mac archives, but both only work with
appletalk devices.

I called Apple Tech. Support for help. They said, "yes, our engineers
put that spec in the manual, but they never wrote the software to
take advantage of that feature. Sorry. Bye." Ugh!!

Has anyone else come across this problem, if so were you able to
solve it?

Please let me know. My email address is [email protected]

I got a similar(?) offer to upgrade to NUM3.0 in the mail last week. The

Sounds very odd to me. I use STF since I have a fax-capable modem and
never experienced such things.

You did not write what computer you have, which extensions, system
software version, etc. - all things which could help to track things
down.

I suggest you get the FaxSTF updater file (somewhere on sumex) which
brings the application up to 2.6.1 and try this (don't update your only
original floppy; use a copy !)

FaxSTF migt have not the best interface, as well as other problems, but it
works for me so I can use my modem for faxing - and that's what I want it
to do, basically. And I don't have a problem with extensions or with other
communication software (I use TeleFinder and Communicate Lite).

If Delrina's software for the Mac is on the same level as it's Windows
products - No! We have here one German version of it installed. The horror
starts with the naming of the ReadMe-file. It's called "Lesen Mir", and
everyone with only little knowledge of the German language knows that this
does not make any sense. Translation of the package itself is about the
same lousy quality. And I could not make it work for 9600 bps connections
(although I know the fax machine at the receiving end does support it) -
it always transmits only at 4800 bps.

Anyway, I don't have to use it. I have my Faxmodem with FaxSTF and my Mac;
this works.

...as it should be with Macs. This is a PC problem, since their serial
ports are usually not fast enough for fast modems. I guess these
salespeople did not know what a Mac is, right?

Well, if you have a modem, and a HW-Handshake cable, that's all you need.
I don't know enough about the Mac's serial port to judge wether it works
with the 28.8k + compression (which should give you in theory 115'200 kbps
throughput while today's maximum of 14.4k + compression is 57'600 kbps).

The UART chips are used to upgrade the serial port of a PC. As far as I
know, there's no possibility to upgrade a Mac's serial ports...

Well, I'll make it clear: The mirrors (such as amug.org, and others)
do not have updated documentation files, or at least they didn't last
time I checked. OK, I just checked ftp.uu.net; it's recent-abstracts,
recent-files and all-files are out of date by more than a week

[Yes. Unless I'm mistaken, they get all their abstract files (found in
help/abs) from us. We don't update the abs lists very often -- for example,
if I look on sumex-aim right now, I notice that all the abstract files were
last changed on July 27... this is partly a bandwidth issue... -Gordon]

How do you view by date? My man page for 'ls' doesn't specify a
date-sorting option (although the 'ls' command in ftp my have some
feature I'm unaware of; I can't find any documentation on it).

[Use ls -lc and you will get a file list sorted by date... this works on
sumex-aim and should work on most mirrors...]

>If you feel you must read the file description before downloading anything
>>From the archive, I suggest you wait for the descriptions to be published

Well, yes, I do like to read the descriptions. Since the digests
expire after about 2 days on our news server, the recent-abstracts
file is the only place to (consistently) find these descriptions. I
could, I suppose, download files without reading the descriptions, but
that obviates the point of being a good net-citizen. Much better (and
faster) to download only the files I need, not all recent files.

In any case, having files in the /help directory which are woefully
out of date doesn't make for much of a "mirror", which should be
constantly updated with the same files as the original archive.

[It isn't the mirror's fault... we do it because a) any file changed has
to be copied all over the net -- high bandwidth and b) it takes a lot of
cpu time to generate those abstract files; something sumex-aim is very
short of.

>In any case, I don't think you need to wait months for the "recent-files"
>list to be updated before using the archives.

Well, something needs to be updated. Without access to the last 3 or 4
digests, there's no way to find out what the recent files are.

[No, you are right. At the moment you are stuck as far as getting abstracts
only. The ony thing I can suggest is ftping to your mirror, going into
per/im and downloading the last few digests and extracting the abstracts

Reportedly, it is already shipping with the 630-series Macs. I beleive it
will be in 7.5 (not absolutely sure, since Apple has wavered a bit on this,
but 7.5 seems to contain most of the former sold-seperately extensions); it

I don't know about ADB connectors particularly, but the ADB socket is
identical to an S-video socket (I actually use an ADB cable to connect an
S-video camera to the input on a Q840AV). There might be a video cable to
do the job if there is no specific ADB solution.

Included with System 7.5, and so no extra charge. Note that this ATM will
not be PPC-native; there is another version being demo-ed now that does
this, and you will have to pay to upgrade to that.

>2. It sounds like applications will have to be written to take

Some GX features require rewriting; others are always available.

> is it safe to assume that
> applications in the wings, like MS Word 6.0 will be set to work with
> GX? Are the modifications needed to use GX extreme?

It is never safe to assume anything with Microsoft: remember how they said
the PPC versions of Word and Excel would be ready "on day one" (meaning
March 14th)? Well, we're passing "day 150" and still no Word 6 (native or
68K).

Quickdraw GX has been in developers' hands since June 93, and MS usually
tries to support new Apple technologies (but not always -- still no
WorldScript support in Word). However a January MacWeek report on the Word
6 beta did not mention GX.

>3. Will my old Adobe type 1 fonts take advantage of the features of GX

ATM Type 1 fonts are automatically converted to GX format when you first
boot your system with GX installed. While this is convenient, it also
means there is No Going Back, if you want to de-install GX, as GX fonts do
not work with old-style ATM.

Subject: ValueFax: real nice shareware fax software

The recently-posted ValueFax [APP/VALUE-FAX.HQX] looks like a great solution to
the nightmare of fax software.

MaxFax came with my LineLink modem, and, while it's not bad in general, it has
a
fatal flaw that I discovered by painful research: it's incompatible with File
Sharing [a fax received while File Sharing is on leads to a hung system].
Ugly.

Everyone else seems to complain about the alternatives, FaxSTF in particular.
Besides, FaxSTF has told me that they don't think it works with the LineLink
[although I can't see why it shouldn't].

Along comes the shareware ValueFax, which does almost everything I need in a
simple and straightforward way. I really like the fact that all of the internal
data is saved either in text format [for the Phone Book, for example] or in
PICT
[for the faxes]. This makes it really easy to get stuff in and out.

There doesn't seem to be any problem with File Sharing. My one worry is the
comment in the documentation that ValueFax is incompatible with AppleTalk
Remote
Access. I have been hoping to setup some kind of call discrimination that would
pass faxes or ARA calls off appropriately. I'm still going to try LineShare and
see if it works.

Another problem with the package is that it's hard to find information about
registration. You have to print the registration form in order to discover that
it costs $20 for an individual and $25 for a business, with cheap site licenses
available. Also, the distribution is some kind of demo, which doesn't become
legitimate until you enter a registration number. It's hard to tell what's
limited about the demo, but the line "The driver now stops working after 20
faxes instead of 10" is buried in the release notes.

The publisher is Pancomm of Cupertino. Buried deep in the extensive
documentation are the address [email protected] and the fax number
1-408-865-0110.

WP has an Extras disk which they claim to send to anyone who has
registered their copy of WPMac 3.0. One of the files on the disk contains
a bunch of macros, one of which does exactly the task you describe. The
macro is called "Search and Replace Font/Size". All the macros are
installed in a file that's called something like "Macros Read Me", and
you need to use WP's Librarian function to move the macros into your own
library file.

If you look at the macro, you'll see why you haven't been having much
luck. Changing a font by macro is much harder than you'd expect, and the
way they've done it is not documented very well (though only about 5
commands in a fairly long macro are unusally confusing...).

If you've registered your copy and haven't received the extras disk, call
WP and complain. If you've registered, don't have the disk, and need the
macro in a hurry, mail me a note.
