Subject: [*] Audiodeck 2.0.2 (FAT) -- Audio CD player for Macintosh
A U D I O D E C K 2 . 0 . 2
What is it?
Audiodeck is an audio CD remote player for Apple CD-ROM drives. Audiodeck
also works with non-Apple drives which are 100% compatible with Apple's
drivers. System 7 and Color QuickDraw are required for Audiodeck to run.
Why should you use it?
This is a good question since a very nice looking AppleCD Audio Player is
included with CD-ROM Setup 5.0 and later, possibly already installed on
your Macintosh. On the surface, Audiodeck 2.0.2 may bear a passing
resemblance to AAP with its 3-D buttons and sleek overall design. However,
a great deal of subtle and not-so-subtle features are exclusive to
Audiodeck:
o can automatically play inserted CD's,
o can force internal CD input and enable playthrough,
o plays adjacent tracks in shuffle and program mode without skipping a beat,
o disable or enable individual tracks in shuffle mode,
o uses the existing disc and track titles of CD Remote Programs,
o but also extends the disc information database with new categories,
o and individual, custom disc settings (i.e.. volume),
o gratuitous Balloon Help for just about everything; plus much, much more.
Do I need to upgrade?
Fixes all known bugs, even the dreaded 24-bit mode bug. If you had problems
with previous version or even if you had not, please upgrade to this
revision. Also, if you have a Power Macintosh, Audiodeck runs native.
But remember, always "Read The Fabulous Manual" before using a software.
Enjoy,

Subject: [*] Excalibur 2.0 - Spelling Checker
This is release 2.0 of Excalibur.
Excalibur is a Macintosh spelling checker for LaTeX documents. You can
optionally turn off LaTeX parsing, so Excalibur is a good plain text
spelling checker too.
Features include:
- Excalibur will offer suggestions for how to correct a word.
- Excalibur can spell check the clipboard. This makes it a good
spelling checker for any text based application such as Alpha, BBEdit,
or Eudora.
- You can teach it about new LaTeX commands and environments that you
define.
- Optionally spell checks text in the typewriter (\tt) font.
- You can create your own dictionaries.
- Works with Textures and OzTeX documents. It should work on any TEXT
file.
- You will need System 6.0.4 or higher to run Excalibur.
- If you are running System 7 or greater, there is balloon help.
- Excalibur is free.
- British, Dutch, French, German, and Italian dictionaries are also
available.
Version 2.0 changes:
- It now runs in native mode on a PowerPC. This is a fat binary.
- It uses a new dictionary format that greatly speeds up operations in
languages other than English. Be sure to read the README file before
throwing away your old version of Excalibur.
- It uses temporary memory to open large files and when doing text to
dictionary and dictionary to text conversions. This means that if
there is enough memory on your machine, you won't have to increase
Excalibur's partition size to open a large file or to do a conversion.
- It has a vastly improved memory management scheme. It should
always recover gracefully from a low memory situation.
- Text to dictionary conversions use much less memory. Fixed a few
bugs associated with conversions.

Try this trick; this is what we always do on out servers: after clicking
on the size box under System 7 to get the view "perfect", drag the grow box
out a teency eency bit. This way, the System 6 machines will also appear
properly. Also, make sure that the default font or finder font on the
machines on your network are all the same. As for actually making the
scroll bars in Finder windows to stay white, you might have a more difficult
time. Good luck.

This depends on your situation. I have installed eDiskon my old
MacPortable whose 40mB disk has become too small. Works without problem,
but slows down disk access when you save or copy something.
I would recommend eDisk ONLY if you don't want to spend money for a
bigger drive - such as for an old computer like my Portable, or where
drives are expensive, such as in a PowerBook.
Please note that you'll need to have a backup of everything (preferrably
on a second harddrive or removable) before you attempt to install eDisk.
Your drive needs to be re-formatted by eDisk to become bigger, and it
needs to be re-formatted again if you chose to de-install eDisk again.
Otherwise, it works great - at least for me.
Greetings, Christian.

Subject: Best Computer Speakers!?
I stumbled upon an interesting ad for the New 221 Premium Series Computer
Speakers in the new MEI/ Center Center catalog. These speakers have
built in 4" woofers, separate 1.25" tweeters, internal amplifier rated at
11.0 Watts x2, total harmonic distortion of 0.25%, and look pretty cool. The
best thing is that they sell for $59.97 a pair (or $54.97 if 2 pairs or
more are purchased). I already own a pair of Yamaha YST-M10 (10.0 Watts
x2) speakers and love them. They cost $69 and do not have woofers but
are smaller. I just thought that I'd pass on this information as I am
curious if anyone has actually heard and compared these two speakers.
Please send me email responses to [email protected].
BTW, I spoke to the sales person at MEI (1-800-634-3478) and she said
that they were extremely loud. She also confirmed that they are made by a
major manufacturer that she can not reveal. Does anyone know who the
manufacturer might be and if this speaker has been reviewed in any
articles yet?

My experiences are very positive. I have been able to read PC-format CD-ROM. I
think that the goodies like Foreign File Access, Iso 9600 File Access, High
Sierre File Access and so on do the trick. I do not know the technical points,
but it works. BTW the last version of CD ROM 5.01 is available by FTP from
Apple, like FTP.APPLE.COM.
That will not solve the problem of opening files created with PC programs. But
MacLink Plus should take care of that if these programs are rather common. For
esoteric programs, it could be harder.

You don't have to go into the Views Control Panel! Just hold down the

First, I'd try to use Central Point's "Mac Tools" (version 3), which
in my opinion fixes more problems than Norton does. You can buy it
for $149 (full version) or $49 (up-/sidegrade from earlier versions or
competing products) from most mail order sources.

There may be something special about the Conner disk. But I can say
that Silverlining (from LaCie, approx $150 direct from them) could be
used to format the Conner disk which is in the old MacPortable computer.
You may contact LaCie at 1-800-999-0182 or (503) 520-9000 phone,
(503) 520-9100 fax.
Hope this helps. Greetings, Christian.

Subject: Converting PS and EPS to Mac-EPS
Hi fellow net-folk,
This problem has been driving me crazy now for months. I need to be
able to convert plain Postscript, EPS files with no previews, and IBM EPS
(TIFF previews) to MAC-EPS files. I've tried every combination of the
various conversion utilities available in the info-mac archives with no
success, including the two recent submissions (EPS Fixer and EPS
Converter).
None of these utilities creates a PICT preview, which I can live with,
but I can't get even get the plain graphic boxes that I am sometimes able
to achieve to print.
Does anyone have the definitive answer to this problem, including the
generation of the proper PICT previews?
Thanks,

I know that PageMaker includes a feature to make brochures. The PowerMac

see the upgrade offer for it - it may be delayed. PageMaker 5.0 for the

Subject: LaserwriterPro 630 question (and disbelief)
I am sorry if this has already been addressed, but I couldnt' find
the answer here, or in the FAQS, or even in the instruction manual.
I am trying to hook up my LWPro 630 to both my macintosh (by
appletalk) and to my Dec Xterminal (by parallel cable), and am having
difficulties with the latter. It seems as if the LWPro630 does not
autoswitch between Postscript and HP-type ascii files which
come in through the parallel port.
I work at a institute which is mostly pc type, and the local
computer support people cannot believe that a printer can be sold
nowdays which does not autosense the type of file it is receiving.
Could it really be true that the top-of-the-line printer apple
sells does not automatically switch?
I'm not talking about using the different ports, here. It does that
fine. I'm talking about detecting PS vs. text-type files that go into
the parallel port. I've tried monkeying around with the Laserwriter
utility (V 7.6.1) to set the switches internally, but none of them
are marked "autoswitch". I either get the choice of setting them
to Postscript or to HPL language.
Thanks for any help (if possible, please reply directly to me
and if there is significant response, I'll post the summary.)

Hello All,
The following hardware request is a little outside the current Apple range

Being a bit of a computer collector I managed to aquire an old Apple Lisa

The output on all the connectors was zero. So it looks like the power supply

Hi fellow netters!
We have some Macs in the University library. The problem is that youngsters
about 10-12 ages can step in the library and do what they wish on those
Macs. Nobody can have an eye on the Macs all the time. You may guess the
rest. Every now and then you will find that some vital parts on your Mac's

In order to protect those Macs it would be enough to hide the system folder
such as to make it invisible, for example. Another and more expensive
method would be to buy At Ease Workgroups. Any suggestions what to do are

Perhaps, it could be possible to do it using MORE memory for SpeedDisk, like
4096k, because that program needs to put the directory in memory to be able to
optimize the disk. The best solution would be to partition such a large disk so
each partition would have LESS files. I think I have seen somewhere that above
a
certain number of files the Finder could have problems. It was around 2000
files
if I remember well, but I am not sure. Perhaps it was with System 6.0.7.

Subject: [A] - How to mount a PC-format CD-ROM?
CC: [email protected]
Hi,
The easiest way to do this is to make an ISO 9660 CD using DOS
formatting software. Most, if not all, CD-ROM drives that are sold for
use with the Mac come with the ISO 9660 access software that is
needed to read this type of disc.
A better solution, if you can convince the powers that be, is to
format the CD using hybrid software, and this is better done from a
Mac. Most write-once machines now have software for either DOS or Mac
or both. The ones that I can recommend either 1st or 2nd hand are OMI,
Sony and JVC. These all offer hybrid solutions. The prices have come
down a lot in the past year, so you should be able to get something
for under $1000. (I still think this is robbery, but it's better than
it used to be by a lot.)
Software to avoid at all costs is the Macintosh software by Dataware.
We used to have it, but it was buggy and we ended up with a bunch of
coffee coasters! Another company that used the buggy Dataware Mac
software pressed 100,000 copies and had to hire about 20 extra tech
support people just to deal with the fiasco, from what I hear.
