Subject: [*] AppleScript speech of Twain's "What is Man"
This is a play script in AppleScript! You will need the following
"osax" to have it read to you: Archived as
/info-mac/dev/script-tools-131-as.hqx; 117K
Applescript will soon be widely distributed with system 7.5 and so,
in numerous e mailings to Jon Pugh, I got my nerve up for this
contribution to the down dog days of our community.
Last night I got my feet wet in applescript into the wee hours of the
morning. I translated a huge on line books initiative (OBI) book for
applescript.
Mark Twain had a play dialogue between a small boy and an old man.
The old man argues that man is only a machine, an artifact of his makeup
and environment and not originating anything good or worthy of personal
merit. The little boy, wishes for something better.
Some of you may feel just as the small boy as you attempt to sell
your thesis proposal to your thesis advisor and committee. For you, as
for me, this applescript play may prove inspirational.
It is not perfect. I haven't gotten down the fine points of
automating putting plays into applescript scripts. I had to break it
into under 32k segments. I had to take out internal "capitalization for
emphasis" lest speech spell out words. I had to take out internal
"quotes for emphasis" lest speech get confused with the handler syntax.

Here are some QuickTime 2.0 MIDI files. Any idea what suffix
they should have in the Archives? Maybe ".qtm" (QuickTime MIDI)?
Anyway, these are a small collection of J.S. Bach compositions.
Both the "Crab Canon" and the "Ricercar =E0 6" are from
"Ein musikalisches Opfer" (BWV 1097).
The composition called "Praeludium 2" is from
"Das wohltemperierte Klavier I".
The rest I'm not quite sure about
Requirements: QuickTime(tm) 2.0 & the QuickTime(tm) Musical
Instruments extention file.
Anyway, Share and Enjoy.

Subject: [*] F/A-18 Hornet PowerPC Hack Installer 1.0
Fire up your Power Mac and Hornet and get ready to fly!
F/A-18 Hornet PowerPC Hack Installer is an application which modifies
F/A-18 Hornet to accelerate the game graphics on Power Macintoshes. This
improves the game speed and control tremendously. It installs PowerPC code
which replaces the existing 680x0 graphics code. This is a "Fat" hack, so
the game application will still work on non-Power Macintoshes.
Be sure to turn on "High-Resolution Flight Model" for best
results...otherwise you won't see much of a difference.
The installer and the hack have been tested and are compatible with F/A-18
Hornet versions 1.1.0, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, and 1.1.3b1. The installer is not
compatible with Hornet version 1.0 (sorry). Other versions of Hornet may
also be compatible, but have not been tested.
NOTE: this hack is not supported by, endorsed by, or related to Graphic
Simulations Corporation in any way.
This file is a BinHex'd StuffIt compressed archive.

Hello, Mac food lovers!
This Mangia! file contains all of the recipes (88) found in "The Kahlua
Recipe Book," (1986 version) produced by Maidstone Wine & Spirits, Inc.
(c1986, Maidstone Wine & Spirits). Also in the file as a "recipe" is the
text of a poem (found inside the front cover of the book) which I've given
the title, "Kahlua: There's Only One" (slogan taken from the back cover of
the book) just to keep with the spirit of the book. It files at the top
and is marked with asterisks.
The folks at Kahlua specifically encourage people to "share the Kahlua
Recipe Book--with friends, neighbors, club members, fellow chefs," so I
took that to mean electronically, too. As a courtesy to the good folks at
Maidstone for their graciousness, please distribute only the original
archive. All of the recipes are included intact and verbatim (except for
the "Titling note" in the enclosed README file), and Kahlua is marked as a
Mangia! "Main Ingredient" in each (just in case someone from
Kahlua/Maidstone comes across this).
Enjoy!

Subject: [*] Mail2000v1.3 Program to read e-mail text-files (Update).
Mail2000 is a small utility to read textfiles containing e-mail. I wrote
it because I have lots of e-mail files lying around from over the last few
years which I occasionally want to read. Mail2000 can open up to four
files, and provides threading of the subject and of the sender, and easy
navigation through the mails. People who have fancy high-speed modem

useful. It needs system 7 to run.

definitions. Replaces version 1.1.

The problem is that with the multifinder going the TEK page comes up

Any ideas? Should I upgrade to system 7 and try again?

You might try RRHelper (written by Dale Talcott, author or RevRDist). It is
an extension that is designed to reset many parameters based on the setting
that were in effect the first time it was run or how it was configured. It
was designed to make sure public access Macs are always in the same
configuration state when they are started. It is available from
sage.cc.purdue.edu (I THINK). If Archie can't find it, let me know and I'll

AppleCD 300 Plus CD-ROM Drive: Cannot Read CD-R Discs (7/94)
Article Created: 19 July 1994
TOPIC -----------------------------------------------------------
When I insert a Recordable CD (CD-R) in my AppleCD 300 Plus CD-ROM drive I hear
a loud grinding noise from the drive approximately once every two seconds. The
disc never appears on the desktop. The only way I can make is stop the grinding
noise is to push the open/close button and to remove the disc. What's wrong?
DISCUSSION ------------------------------------------------------
History
------
The Recordable Compact Disc Systems standard (called "Orange Book") was not
completed when the production of the AppleCD 300 Plus drive began in November
1993. At that time, the method used to indicate the last session on a disc was
to omit the B0 entry in the last session's Table of Contents (TOC).
In January 1994, a new version of the "Orange Book" specification was released
that employed a second method to indicate the last session on the disc: set the
B0 entry in the last session to FF FF FF.
Discs that are written using this second "Orange Book" technique do not mount
on early AppleCD 300 Plus drives.
The problem is only seen under the following conditions:
o The disc is a CD-R disc. *Regular CD-ROM discs do not have a problem.*
o The disc is a large capacity disc (74-minutes). This is approximately a
618MB Macintosh volume. *Regular capacity (63-minutes) discs work
correctly.*
o The Table of Contents (TOC) on the disc contains a B0 entry set to
FF FF FF. Currently, newer versions of the CD-R writer made by JVC are
the only known CD-R drives that consistently create this entry in the
TOC. The JVC CD-R writer is marketed by JVC and Pinnacle.
This problem will be seen when using an AppleCD 300 Plus drive on a Macintosh
or on a PC. An interesting note is that all Panasonic CD-ROM drives produced
early this year for PCs also have the same incompatibility as the AppleCD 300
Plus drive. This means that IBM and Compaq have the same issue with CD-R
discs.
Changes have been made to the AppleCD 300 Plus firmware (firmware version 1.1f)
to correct the situation. The new version of firmware is available in revision
`B' of the AppleCD 300 Plus drive which is now in production. A firmware update
of a revision `A' drive is NOT possible because the new firmware is also tied
to a hardware change.
Solution
---------
Possible ways to avoid the problem:
o Don't use the JVC CD-R writer for creating discs.
- or -
o Don't put more than 610 Megabytes on a disc when using the JVC CD-R
system.
It should be noted that CD-R discs that exhibit this problem can still be used
for mastering CD-ROM discs. Most (if not all) mastering facilities create a new
TOC when creating the glass master, removing the B0 entry which causes the
problem. If a multisession disc is mastered, the mastering facility should be
instructed to omit the B0 entry in the last session's TOC. This instruction may
not be necessary because the B0 entry is normally omitted by the reformatting
software anyway.
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
But I still don't get one thing. Why do the old Apple (Sony) CD-300 reads this
R-CD correctly if this model is older than the CD-300 Plus? Both of them must
have been designed by the "old" Orange Book guidelines, so why do they perform
differently? Which will be the official policy for users affected by this bug?
I just wanted to let you know the true story. Best. Doglan//

With at least one FMP file of mine, if I try to do an export, the

Then, if I delete the fields that have already shown up (of course,
working on a *copy* of the file), the rest of the fields finally show
up.
Anybody have a clue as to what's going on here?
FileMaker Pro lets you set which fields get exported. If you are
initiating the export command from a script in the file that's
misbehaving, I suspect that you defined a certain export order for that
script accidentally, one that you did not want. You might try printing
out that script & see if that tells you anything.

Subject: Hard drive and FAX modems (2Qs)
Dear Netters,
I have two questions today...first about hard drives:
Is it just my imagination, or are there no external hard drives of less than
500 MB capacity that are sold for less than a $1 a MB?
I am specifically looking for either an external drive (270MB -300MB),
or an internal drive
that can plug into the built in SCSI port of my vanilla LC.
In other words, to replace to my 40 MB hard drive.
Or better yet, are there ways of adding a protective cover to internal hard
drives that are cheaper than buying an external hard drive?
Fax Modems:
Has someone come up with a FAX modem add-on (to serial port or phone port of
modem) that will allow you to send out hard copy FAXs?
I really don't need a full fledge scanner, all I want is to be able to use
the FAX capabilities of my modem to their fullest. I don't want to have to
continue shuffling back and forth from a FAX sending store to my FAX modem for
receiving.
If not, I'll stick to snail. ;-( I'm not panicked, just looking for better
information age technology)
I have a 9600/9600 fax/modem with a serial 25 pin port and 2 phone ports.
If either of these are available from a reputable mail order company or retail
outlets, please let me know, how much would either cost.
TIA.

Subject: MacTCP/NNTP/SMPT/UUPC/Uncle Tom Cobbly and all...
I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of integrated support
for offline newsreading on the Mac, and so have decided to have a crack at
writing my own all-in-one package.
The plan is to create an integrated package that can download messages,
unbatch them, provide reading facilities (greater than 32k) and allow reply
via NNTP or SMPT.
Since I have to integrate SMPT mail transfer to achieve that goal, I'm also
considering adding full SMPT mailing capabilities. Again, these facilities
would include the ability to deal with greater than 32k.
Now I'm not stupid - I realise this is one -hell- of a project. However,
I'm also not a programming novice, having written commercial software for
the Mac in the past. I -am- a TCP/IP 'novice' however, at least at the
development level, and so would appreciate some advice about some good
books/information about the subject. These books would be ordered from the
UK, so if they're American, ISBN number would be appreciated where
possible.
Specifically, I'm looking for information about MacTCP calls; the NNTP
protocol (and UUCP if it becomes necessary - I'm hoping to avoid it
however!); and the SMPT mailing protocol.
If there are any freeware examples of the above (for -any- platform), I'd
also like to know. Source for a Usenet reader would be good, preferably
including information about such things as limiting distribution and
cross-postings (which I haven't had that many dealings with even as a
user).
Oh - and for all those who'd be interested in the result, please don't mail
me yet! I have a number of interests, and I have to divide my leisure-time
between them. Consequently, this project is likely to take a -very- long
time to complete. The intention is to develop it mainly for my own use,
however should the project achieve worthwhile functionality I'll also
release it as shareware. At that time and AT THAT TIME ONLY I'll invite net
participation in the form of alpha and beta testing. Don't hold your breath
though - it may not ever happen. I'd certainly like to give it a try
however.
Thanks in advance for any information, and alt.test here I come...
Cheers,
Ian

>OBVIOUSLY TACTLESS, regardless of the actual information content. He can

First, so far as I know, with very few exceptions in cases such as extremely
long signatures, Info Mac is an unmoderated list. Asking that Gordon act
as judge and jury on what is "OBIVIOUSLY TACTLESS" is just adding more work
to a job that is large enough already (BTW, thanks, Gordon).
Second, we find ourselves facing that age-old question "Define tactless?".
You,
Gordon and I may have very different ideas about that. We have to deal with
tactless (by our own definition) people everyday. I think that is,
unfortunately, a fact of life in our virtual communities, as well. At least
you can throw a tactless email in the trash or ignore it, something that is
not
so easy with a tactless person.
Finally, as you said, we have all seen Al's stinging replies before and we
will,
no doubt, see them again. Those of us who have been here long enough take
them
with a grain of salt. We do this because we know Al is a real person with
moods just like the rest of us and because we know that he has a lot to
contribute (content wise if sometimes not in style). I don't thing Al is one
of
those who needs to "be protected from their personal devils". When he is out
of line he needs to be told the same as anyone else, but censorship is not
the
answer.
>Simple rule:
>attack ANY THING you wish - ideas, products, advice, etc - but attack NO

This is good rule to follow (in real life as well as on the net). But _my_

TidBITS#242/05-Sep-94
This TidBITS issue roams far and wide, with MailBITS about Green
Disk, a company that creates recycled floppy disks, a
CodeWarrior Web site, comments about Timbuktu, and other
announcements. The issue continues with a report about a
QuickMail client for the Newton called EnRoute, a look at
several software packages that teach and translate between
languages, a look at a pair of security programs for public
Macs, and a review of RedShift, a CD for astronomy enthusiasts.
