Subject: [*] commsService; a "rolodex" like communications facility

commsService is a easy-to-use, point-and-click shareware application for
the Macintosh that provides a "rolodex" like communications facility. The
application provides facilities for recording the details of commonly used
communications connections/sessions as a series of parameters on an
individual "card". Once the details have been recorded the name of the
card (connection/session) then appears in a scrolling list on the menu
screen. Repeated connections may then be made simply by double clicking on
the name of the required connection in the scrolling list.

The ease of use of the interface and the power of the scripting language
make this an ideal communications application for the classroom and/or
computer lab.

The details recorded on a communications "card" are referred to as a
"service". A service is defined as any process running on a local or
remote computer, eg. an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) or a Campus
Wide Information System (CWIS). Each service is uniquely defined via a
series of 15 parameters that describe attributes such as the name, the
method used to connect to the service, the login and logout scripts, etc.

The application permits multiple, simultaneous sessions to be active at any
one time. A typical session might therefore include a serial connection to
your local OPAC in one window, whilst another window displays information
>From a CWIS, and a third displays a remote network connection to a second
OPAC.

The application utilises the power of HyperCard's scripting language,
HyperTalk to provide a powerful communication scripting facility. It
achieves this by defining a series of communication specific language
extensions that enable scripts to communicate directly with services.

commsService is based upon Apple's Communications Toolbox technology,
consequently connectivity is only limited by the range of Connection and
Terminal Emulation tools that are available on your machine. (NB. The
application comes bundled with several tools including a public domain
tcp/ip/telnet tool and Apple's VT102 terminal emulation tool).

commsService is AppleScriptable.

Once a series of services have been defined, a copy of the application may
be made and then "locked" to prevent access to the service definition
cards. This is particularly useful for those circumstances where the end
users are to be prevented from seeing/modifying the service details.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 2.2; a disk (floppy) copy utility

Disk Charmer 2.2.x is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop - even the new Drag Manager.
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro/StuffIt segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer, unless you have
System 7.5 which incorporates it.
Look for the Thread Manager on ftp.apple.com:

ftp://ftp.apple.com/dts/mac/sys.soft/th ... -2-0-1.hqx

New from version 2.1.4:
Works around the Thread Manager bug (see the enclosed note for details);
Drag Manager support;
Fixed a subtle bug that could affect the Lock out bad sectors option.

Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

Enclose is GMS1.0b2, a library for adding background music with QuickTime 2.0
to your programs (QT 2.0 not included). It is a .o file that can be linked
with most any compiler (it was written in TP) There are six simple calls
(init,
de-init, idle, suspend, resume, and play) that provide a simple way to use
the music playing components. Once set up, playing music is a simple as
playing a sound resource (simpler, actually). Includes a utilities to convert
MIDI files to "Musi" resources (it doesn't play MIDI files directly).

This is a "companion" library to the Oct MacTech article on QT Music. If you
want to include this library in your application, all I ask is a copy and
credit in the about box...

Subject: [*] Soon v4.6.0; a calendar, sun & moon utility

Hello,
this is my latest version of "Soon4", v4.6.0, a calendar, sun & moon utility!
Now coming in both, a plain 68000 and an FPU Version...!

What Soon4 shows you:
1. The weekday and date in "long form"...
2. How many days are gone so far and how many are left this year, including
automatic leapyear detection...
3. The current location and timezone including automatic DST detection
4. Three different twilights:
The astronomical - starts/ends when the sun is 180 below horizon. That's
when no more daylight's left at all...
The nautical - 120 below horizon. Used for naval purposes, starts when the
brightest stars come out...
The civil - 60 below horizon. Ends when there just not enough light left
for work (traditional, that is :)
4.1 If you're beyond the polar circle (north or south) you're also noticed
about the polar night and the midnight sun...
5. Sunrise and -set time...
6. The moonphase with it's exact days, the position of the moonterminator and
a common phrase of the actual phase...
7. Two analog clocks:
- Upper clock, which is a 24 hours analog clock.
It shows the start/end of daytime/nighttime plus twilight. This gives you
a graphical impression of how much day-/night-/twilight hours you have
that day...
- Lower clock - is a "usual" 12 hours analog clock. It's updated every
second and shows you the current time...
8. A graphic of the current moonphase...
9. The buttons:
- The "Log" button, prompts the user for a start and end date and writes
the date to a textfile. In a window with 6 buttons you can choose, what
data you want to be logged to the file. "Everything" or just some
selected
moon phases (new, half(wax), full, half(wan))...
- The "Thank You" button, quits the program...

Docfiles included.

have fun, Xn.

This sounds great, but this is the first time I hear of extensions to

EV (there's no "extension" menu)? Many thanks in advance.

To utilize greater than 8 mb of RAM you need 32 bit addressing. The IIcx ROM
does not support this. Connectix has released a freeware patch for those Mac's

I have an SE/30 running System 7.1. The arrow cursor appears in the top

different ADB port, zapping the PRAM and reinstalling the system software,
all to no avail.

The strange part (at least to me) is that the mouse button seems to work.
Pressing the button does drop the Apple menu. Even stranger, if I use the
Mouse Keys from Easy Access, they do not work for cursor movement either,
but pressing the 5 key does work the mouse button, as expected.

I'm out of bullets. I have a hard time understanding how this could be a
hardware problem, but that's about all that's left, as far as I can see.
Anyone out there have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

(P.S. I encourage replies to the list, but if you could please e-mail me as

Subject: Desktop bug?

Tell me if anyone's every heard of this one:

1. Make an alias to an application on a non-startup hard disk.
2. Copy the alias to a folder on the startup hard disk.
3. Restart
4. The alias will have changed to a "generic" application icon. Won't
support drag-and-drop.
5. The really strange part: The application itself will also have changed
to a generic icon and loses support for drag-and-drop.

- Rebuilding the desktop sets things right, but it gets screwed up again on
the next restart.
- Problems only show up with Applications that have aliases stored in a
folder on the startup disk. All other applications are unaffected. If I
trash the alias and restart, the Application gets its icon back.

Specifics: PowerMac 8100/80, System 7.5.

Weird, huh?

Reading what they say very carefully (InfoAlley I.9, p. 14) I think they

You might recall that some time back I wondered about DiskCopy 4.2
dying in PPC mode on my Q650 with Apple's PPC upgrade card. I got a bunch
of responses, most of the "No problem, mon" persuasion but several of
the "Gee, I thought that only happened to me" type. A couple folk said
to replace my DiskCopy 4.2 with DiskCopy 5.

Heavy snooping on the net yielded no DiskCopy 5, but one respondent sent
me a copy. It failed in the same way.

This week I got System 7.5, and it made all the difference in the world
over the 7.1.2 I got with my PPC card. DiskCopy works! And Apple File
Exchange no longer hangs my computer. Whee!

The best part of 7.5, from my perspective, is that it doesn't need the
despised enablers. Instead of a PPC and a 68k version of each boot disk,
maybe more depending on what I could fit on a floppy with the enablers
for every Mac in the office, a single disk works. The System file on the
7.5 Disk Tools floppy is over 800k, but it needs no enabler, so you can
get a goodly sized app on the rest of a 1.44M disk.

And I don't need all the "extra" disks I'd accumulated with 7.1: CD-ROM
driver 5, Network Installer, System Update 3, LaserWriter 8, Enablers.
Did I miss something? Probably. System 7.1 was a pain. I'm freeing up
all kinds of floppies, simplifying my life, and seeing normal things
work normally again.

If you've had anywhere near the problems I've had under 7.1.2, I heartily
recommend spending the too-much money for System 7.5.

My hospital is installing an ethernet backbone to run its software for

What are Your suggestions for software/hardware implementation?
Our wishes:
a mixed network (70% DOS, Windows, 25% Mac, 5% Unix)
e - mail between all the medical staff and the hospital administrators,
in a second time also the technical people
access through the users own computer to a centrally located bank of

Subject: NewsWatcher, MailConverter, EasyView & Eudora tip

Hello, here is a tip I have found useful:

I use MailConverter
(ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/mac/info-mac/cmp ... er-122.hqx) to convert
and filter NewsWatcher save-files to mailboxes. I then browse the resulting
file with EasyView's Internet Mail-mode and clip interesting articles to a
new file. Then I import this digested file to Eudora and archive the
messages there.

This way the saved messages are a _lot_ more readable and the archive is
smaller (unnecessary long headers filtered out) compared to the
redirect-to-self-approach with NewsWatcher.

Yes, the procedure is a little complicated. I use EasyView because it is
faster than Eudora and with EasyView I can use the spacebar and b (and
other key-combinations) to easily browse through the messages.

The latest MailConverter 1.3.0 can also convert digests like Info-Mac to
Eudora mailboxes so that replying is easier.

The key was an ipx bridge from appletalk network to novel lan. That
seemed the essential notes on corporations to advise.
We spent getting to know you network game time together, so I will
have histories of who read my e mail to remind me of names and build a

uucp was in a sentence somewhere and I asked the meaning of uu and
they said unix to unix and I guessed communication protocol.

Subject: QUED/M vs BBedit

Does anyone have any experience with BBedit (full version) AND QUED/M?

I've used QUED/M for many years (before it got the '/M' for 'Macros' name).
I use it's grep capability to massage the heck out of text files.

I've always used other simpler editors for quick and dirty stuff. Right now
I'm trying BBedit Lite (which I really like).

My boss (a UNIX hacker) likes QUED/M's grep capability on the mac and
asked me to order him a copy. However, I've read that the full version
of BBedit also has grep.

Can anyone give me a comparison of the two editors? I'm not really too
concerned with their abilities to interface with MPW/Think P-or-C, etc
since the editor will be used by itself.

One serious limitation of QUED/M is its lack of an IF or TEST
capability but, of course, that's not part of grep directly. And I've
always managed to work within this limitation (although awkwardly).
BTW, I'm currently using QUED/M v2.5.

If possible, please email me directly. I'll summarize any responses
and reply back here.

Subject: QuickDraw GX -> PS file

To clear up some of the latest discussion and that published in the excellent
TidBits by Tonya...

You CAN ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, print to a Postscript file with QuickDraw GX.
I've done it with both Desktop printing turned on or off. With QD GX savvy
programs, there is an Destination drop menu that allows you to send the
output to a printer or to a Postscript file. (Please note: this is different
>From the nice feature of a drop menu that allows you to choose the apecific
output device, like your LW Pro 630 or the PPD Maker GX driver to produce the
font independent digital document). If desktop printing is turned off, then
you get a dialog box not unlike those of the LW 8.x variety with a radio
button that can direct output to a Postscript file.

Even though I find QD GX interesting, it is not too usable. The only savvy
program I have is SimpleText!! I find the QD GX Helper (Desktop printing
option) not too usable so may I put a plug in here for the outstanding hack
by Lawrence D'Oliveiro called Old Print (an update can be found in a very
recent IM digest). It allows you to use GX and the old drivers.

Mel's question refers to this text in an article I wrote for TidBITS about
QuickDraw GX:

After seeing Mel's query, I double-checked, and the quote above is dead
wrong. The LaserWriter Print dialog box has a Destination pop-up menu, and
the menu offers two choices: Printer and PostScript. The PostScript choice
works much as you would expect. Unfortunately, I still can't figure out how
(or if) you can save to an EPS file.

I'll be sure to clear this up in TidBITS 245, and I apologize for giving
out incorrect information. Anyone out there who knows for certain about
saving out to an EPS file?

Apology gladly accepted. Hopefully someone will know about your last
question. (At least there are a couple of PS->EPS converters out there in
'net land if this ends up being a lost feature.).

I may give GX a trial run this weekend. Since I do a lot of .ps

Subject: Shareware

After the recent proposal to nominate favourite shareware/freeware programs
I thought about the ones I could not go without. As well as the obvious
ones which should be on every Mac (not only those with System 7.5!), e.g.
PopChar, SuperClock, ApplWindows, Disinfectant, etc. I would also nominate
the combination of Greg's Browser with DropStuff/Expander Enhancer. This
combination has finally severed any nostalgic attachment I had for the very
first program I registered, Compact Pro, which I originally preferred to
Stuffit Lite for its uncluttered interface. Browser and DropStuff make an
unbeatable team for file manipulation. Brilliant.

There is one other program which is always on my list, and I was amused to
see support for it in a somewhat unusal fashion in a French Mac mag. This
took the form of a retraction published by a hard-disk supplier over
statements that their hard-disks were twice as fast as those of their
competitors. This apparent increase in performance was attributed to the
use of a shareware program with their disks, but not in the machines used
for their competitors disks. And the name of this program which doubles
hard-disk speed? none other than SpeedyFinder. Is that the most unusual
endorsement of a shareware product?
