Subject: (C) one caveat about 8100 Newer upgrades

The comments made below are accurate. I guess the question is one of
strategy. For example I wanted a sound studio. Digidesign Pro sound
cards are expensive (several thousand dollars). Used NuBus versions
of the cards cost a lot, lot less than the current PCI versions. If
you want to set up a high quality studio for a lot less then an 8100,
accelerator, and cards like these is a bargain. I would suggest that
there are similar NuBus systems that could serve an advanced amateur
or low budget professional operation in many fields like the example
cited above where specialized NuBus cards have been replaced with PCI
cards. But the analysis below is accurate if you are going to set up
and expand a basic system.

I also have placed one large drive (1 gig) and two used smaller (500
meg) drives in the three bays. By creating a stripped RAID array with
the two smaller drives I have improved the speed of my disks for
about $45/drive.

I also added 128 Meg of used memory , to the 32 meg that was there,
for $1/meg. In the end I have a system that would have cost me more
than $10,000 a few years ago for less than $1000. I never intend (or
expect to need) to expand it. The software revisions will stay where
they are the hardware will also be run until it dies.

Since most silicon components die in the first few weeks, if they are
going to, I expect the system to run indefinitely. The mechanical
parts, disk, mouse, keyboard, fan, etc. are my major concerns.

Subject: (Q) Conflict Catcher 8.0.7 patch doesn't work

Dear Digest readers,
Casady & Green said they'd have a working update soon, and this has
been over a month. I tried downloading the other day and it still
doesn't work on Conflict Catcher 8.0.6. Macfixit's method of
getting it to work doesn't seem to work. Any idea how to get it to
work? I already have MacOS 9.0.4, and I am not going to downgrade my
OS to make sure Conflict Catcher works. Please e-mail your reply to
the address below. Thank you.

Subject: (Q) Wanted...a file cataloger program

Dear Digest readers,
I've tried File Buddy, Ultrafind, Blitz, Norton Fast Find, DiskDup+,
Listfiles, and FileList+. All do some of what I want to do but none
can catalog all my CDs. I want a program that can handle catalogs
of over 50,000 files (you probably think I am nuts, but that's what
has happened!) with catalogs that result in sortable listings of
name, file size, date created, date modified, and version numbers
for all files, and the ability to mark each CD with a tag number so I
can tell which CD the files fall under. The program should work
with a Powerbook G3/233 with 192MB of RAM using MacOS 9.0.4. I want
to be able to eliminate the cases where I have more than one
duplicate of all files.
The trouble with most of these programs is that once they get to
listings of this size, they crash with Type 1 or Type 11 errors.

If somebody knows of such a program, please let me know via e-mail.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
[email protected]

Subject: [*] Curmudgeon's Eudora Fixer 1.1

Brain-Sucker Productions is pleased to announce that Curmudgeon's Eudora
Fixer has been upgraded to version 1.1. Its companion application, Eudora
Sound Mover, remains at version 1.0.1.

New in this version:

A user noted that the contextual menu for the Status column didn't reflect
your preferred graphics: it was still the "new style" icons, albeit a
little smaller. The problem was that the icons were stored in more than one
location and more than one format-- "cicn" as well as "ics8/4/#" for those
of you who know what resources are. This was fixed, and now when you click
and hold in the Status column, you'll see the icons that you created!
(Users who previously ran CEF to change their Eudora icons must run the new
version to get this functionality.)

A layering problem was also fixed, so that users of Systems prior to Mac OS
8.0 will be able to see all the icons.

Availability and Contact Information

Curmudgeon's Eudora Fixer v1.1 and Eudora Sound Mover v1.0.1 are packaged
together, in the form of a StuffIt 5.0 archive, along with some useful
mail-related sounds. This archive is available immediately from
Brain-Sucker's website: . The
author may be reached by surface mail at
St. John Morrison

or by email at .

The applications are not limited in any way for non-registered users.

Subject: [*] Smart Window 1.6 (68k)

Version 1.6 - New features
- Added "Hide Control Strip during the drag" option.

Version 1.5 features
- Smart Window extends his functionalities to all applications; the
user can now take advantage of Smart Window while dragging objects
between windows of different applications, improving the way to work
with multiple applications;

- Two keyboard shortcuts let the user collapse one window or all
windows of the same application while continuing the drag & drop
sequence;

-Automatic hide of the Control Strip (if present), giving to the user
a greater viewable area;

- Smart Window now forces the update of the windows, keeping clearer
the context of the drag & drop operation; unfortunately, at now only
the Finder supports this feature, but I hope in the near future an
increasing number of applications will completely take benefit of
Smart Window ;-)

Description
Smart Window helps the user to navigate the windows during a
drag&drop operation.
Moving a drag selection over a collapsed window's title bar, Smart
Window will automatically expand that window, letting the user choose
the drop location exactly (or continue the navigation using the
Finder "spring-loaded folders" feature); as soon as the drag is
completed or the user moves the drag selection over another window,
the auto-expanded window will be collapsed again automatically.
If the user moves the drag selection over a partially hidden window
and the owning application is in the foreground, Smart Window will
put in front that window, letting the user see its content entirely.
While dragging over a normal window's title bar, the user can decide
to collapse it pressing the Control key or collapse all windows of
the application that owns that window pressing the keys Control +
Option; depending on the user preferences, at the end of the
drag&drop sequence, Smart Window will restore the status of all
windows collapsed with one of the keyboard shortcuts.
Smart Window is an application that works transparently and does not
require a particular installation, so the user will never face
extension conflicts.

I had a very frustrating phone call with the Supra modem people
(Diamond Multimedia) on Friday.

The fax software (Faxcilitate 1.7.3) hasn't worked since I installed
System 8.6. Hadn't paid much attention to the problem until now, but
recently, some junk fax #$@@$ been wardialing with fax tones, and I
want to mallet his 'nads.

The tech person from Diamond Legacy (the division that supports
legacy products) confirmed that Faxcilitate 1.7 was not compatible
with System 8.6. So I asked how to upgrade (I think they're up to 2
something). The guy had no idea, nor did his supervisor. They said
they ship the software with their modems, but they don't know where
the company that developed it is, and they didn't have any separate
copies they could sell me.

I repeated that back to them and told 'em that if I couldn't find
anyone to sell me an upgrade, my only option would be to pirate the
software. Nothing but silence in reply.

So does anyone know who's responsible for Faxcilitate now, or where I
can get the latest version?

I recently upgraded from version 4.7 to 4.74 and I have a few questions
about things that seem different.

1. I used to go to a website (http://www.wmkvfm.org/index_ii.html) that
streamed 40s and 50s style music via Real Audio. It worked fine under
4.7 but under 4.74 it never gets to the point where it actually makes
the connection. Real Audio is shown in my tool bar as being known to the
browser. What is wrong?

2. When I use Communicator to download my e-mail, the new messages are
scattered seemingly randomly amongst the already read mail in my inbox
instead of being placed at the end of the list. Any ideas why? What do I
need to do to get them to appear at the end?

3. Is there any way to delete an e-mail I don't want to read (based on
the subject) without actually having to open it? As soon as I click on
the subject, preparatory to clicking the Delete icon, the message opens.

Thanks to anyone who can help with any of these issues.

In fairness to Apple, this is a misstatement of fact.

Apple, prior to the existence of the cloners, did not support
third-party hard drives or CD-ROM drives in their drivers.

This dates back to the System 6 days. It's not something new that
happened during or immediately prior to the cloning days. I remember
dealing with it back when the IIci was a hot machine.

There was one release of the Apple CD-ROM driver that supported
non-Apple-labelled SCSI CD-ROM drives. This was the one [5.3, if I
recall correctly] that shipped with MacOS 7.6. No previous or
subsequent version has this support enabled by default. The
referenced hacks apparently reinstate it.

Recent version of Apple Drive Setup appear to have lifted the "Apple
Firmware only" requirement on hard drives that HD Setup used to have,
but Apple still does not actively support any drives other than those
that Apple installs. There is no Apple-provided list of just which
hard drives Drive Setup supports.

Subject: Problematic TCP+PPP settings

Hi, Allan,

Possible solution 1: Does your PPP configuration include valid DNS
server entries? At the bottom of the TCP/IP control panel is a box
with the title "Name server addr:". Without a valid DNS server, you
will get result similar to those you described.

Possible solution 2: If your PPP connection is via Earthlink, try
using the Earthlink Wizard which is available as part of the latest
version of their Total Access software. This application will fix
most configuration problems associated with TCP/IP, PPP and whatever
else ails you.

Possible solution 3: Try rebooting. Sometimes my Powerbook didn't
recognize changes to the TCP/IP configuration under 8.6 until I
rebooted. (.) seems to work much better in that regard.

Hope this helps

Dave

Depending on which one you use: Microtek ExpressSCSI and Xircom
PortGear 4-port multi-function, yes.

However, be aware that Mac OS 9.0.4 has introduced some SCSI "issues,"
not present in 9.0, which cause those devices to fail with some SCSI
devices, notably Zip drives and some scanners: ejecting a Zip drive
causes freezes, the scanners don't work and may or may not cause
freezes.

Xircom's web site says Apple is aware of the "issues" and they are
working to resolve them. Since both the devices I mentioned above
experience the same "issue," I believe what Xircom says, which was also
confirmed to me by Xircom.

There are a couple of FireWire-to-SCSI adapters I saw at MacWorld, but
at this point, they all permit only ONE SCSI device, no daisy-chaining
(although you can have multiple $79 adapters online at the same time).
Hope this helps. Cheers,

eXodus meets both your specifications ("available" and "good"). I use it
regularly. The publisher is Powerlan USA (800-541-7409, or
