Subject: [*] Dog X-Ray; a tool for Amateur Radio operators

Dog X-Ray 1.0d1 is a tool for Amateur Radio operators who use a Power
Macintosh and a PK-232 TNC. (If you have no interest in digital amateur
radio using the PK-232 AND a Power Mac, this software is of absolutely no
use to you.) Dog X-ray provides a packet mode interface allowing multiple
connections (up to 10), intelligent command interpretation, and flexible
speech capability. It's target is the DXer who is looking for a smart
interface to the DX packet cluster. At the moment, Dog X-Ray operates in
simple HOST mode and provides some intelligent processing of DX spots.
As it evolves, Dog X-Ray will grow to a complete interface/spotting/and
logging system--something long lacking for the Mac. This is the D1
version, meaning very little alpha or beta testing has been performed.
Any and all comments are welcome to :

Subject: [*] FastClock+DCC v3.55 - Model Train Running Application

This long overdue update to FastClock+DCC 3.4 now supports the Mac Plus and
SE without crashing immediately!

This program allows you to run Digital Command Control equipped model train
locomotives and accessories with your Macintosh by using the serial ports
and a power booster ($35 in parts if you make it yourself.)

Run multiple locomotives at the same time without block wiring your layout!
Turn lights, sounds and other functions on and off at will on each locomotive!
Switch turnouts and special effects on and off remotely!
Program the EEPROM registers to give each locomotive it's own address,
speed curve, and acceleration characteristics.
Drag locomotive controls onto another to run multiple-units.
Use the mouse to drag a slider, or use the keyboard to control speed,
direction, and functions.

$20 Shareware payment will allow more locomotives and accessories to be
operated at the same time, otherwise this is fully functional.

Subject: [*] FileIndexer 1.2

This program builds an index of all words in documents in a heirarchy of
folders.

New in this version, (since version 1.1), is Claris XTND support so it
can read any document you have a filter installed for. Index size is much
smaller as it hashes the words, the tradeoff here is that you get some
mis-hits. It also does word "stemming" if you want.

FileIndexer trades memory for speed. It builds a sorted list of unique
words
(not case sensitive), and then keeps a list of the files that contain
each word.

This list of lists is kept in memory. This makes it VERY fast to do the
binary search.
You can save the index to a file and load it reasonably quickly.

Run FileIndexer, choose Index folder, and select the top folder in a tree
of
text files to be indexed. Claris XTND can be used (if available) to read
documents.
You need to turn it on in the preferences dialog to use it. Note that
some documents,
in my experience, will hang XTND. (I have no control over this). If the
beach ball
cursor times out and stops, you are probably stuck. The offending
document name
is left displayed in the status field.

When done, type a single word into the find field and press return. A
list of all
the files that contain that word will be displayed. In brackets you'll
see the number
of times the word is found in that file. Also shown is the modification
date of
the file and then the full path to the file.

Double-click on the file to open the first 32k of it in a text window.
You can choose
to view the document in it's original app or the app of your choice.

>From the text window you can use Find or Find again (command-G) to locate
the word
you searched for.

I built a PowerPC native version but it was slower! Probably due to my
heavy use
of the non-native file manager.

Subject: [*] Gradebook 2.0

Gradebook is a grade keeping program for the Macintosh, designed especially
for college courses. Instructors save time, especially at the end of the
semester (finals time!), and students can benefit from mid-semester grade
reports.

With GB you can use numbers, letters (ABC), or "check-plus-minus" to assign
scores to entries. Flexible grading options include dropping low scores and
weighted grade categories. Imports the results of machine-graded exams from
TEXT file. Generates lists and reports.

Requires Hypercard 2.0 or later.

New in GB version 2.0:

* Optional weighting of individual entries in the same category for entries
that use numbers.

* More options for editing existing entries

* Integrated online manual

* New "GB Emailer" utility generates email form letters for your students.
You can send your students personalized messages to facilitate online
discussion or to send them grade reports. Requires Hypercard 2.2,
scriptable Eudora email program, and Applescript installed.

Subject: [*] hyper-gatekeeper-127

HyperGatekeeper is an anti-viral stack for all known HyperCard script
viruses. It is designed to detect unknown viruses as well, but whether
that will work or not depends on the individual viruses.

This stack has been tested with all the viruses I had on hand (for some
reason, HyperCard viruses are hard to find; I had to write almost all of
the test viruses myself).

I have tried to make this stack the best it can be, but then no security
is perfect. Any suggestions or complaints are welcome. (Please give a
reason for your complaint, not just "I hate this thing; I'm not using it.")

This version (1.2.7) will detect viruses that try to evade HGK by
unlocking a stack, infecting it, and then locking it again. To prevent
the annoying problem of having to answer modification dialogs on old
stacks after installing a new version of HGK, this version includes an
updater that will upgrade an installed (in the Home stack) copy of
version 1.2.5.

Romi is a program that lets you play games of Rummy against the Macintosh.

Romi runs on any Macintosh with System 6.0.4 and higher, in color
and black & white, with System 7.0 and higher, you can use balloon
help in menus, window and preference dialog.

What's new in Romi 1.6

With this new version of Romi, you can play against more than one Romi player.
You can play against one to tree players simulated by Romi by using the
Preferences item of the Options menu. All the players simulated by Romi play
at the same level of difficulty that you have chosen. When you win a game,
the penalty score given to Romi is the maximum score of the players simulated

Subject: [*] TTConverter1.5; a font utility

Since Microsoft Windows 3.1 was introduced, Windows users have had the
capability to display and print TrueType fonts. Because TrueType fonts are
self-contained and portable, the only thing preventing the easy interchange
of fonts between the Mac and Windows is how the fonts are stored.

The Mac stores its TrueType fonts as 'sfnt' resources, along with the
'FOND' resource that all Mac font families must have, and Windows stores
its TrueType fonts in .TTF files (files with a .TTF extension). Except for
the location, the actual font data is usually completely compatible.
TTConverter is designed to move this font data between the 'sfnt' resources
and .TTF files so it is possible to use TrueType fonts created in one
operating system with the other.

Subject: [Q] Disturbance in the Force

I am having some trouble with my in my Performa 6110CD/60 (with 8 Mb of
physical memory). It seems to run fine for a period of time, but then after
an hour or two of use, it suddenly gets slower. It gets slower and slower,
until finally, I can't take it anymore, and I limp my crippled mouse over to
the Restart command. Often by that point, the Restart command just freezes
the System.

I have installed RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler. I'm not sure if it is one of
these utilities that is causing my problem. I have used RAM Doubler for some
time, and I don't remember any of these symptoms until I started using Speed
Doubler. I've removed Speed Doubler, but the problem seems to still exist.

I've also starting crashing more. A lot of System Errors due to
"unimplemented trap" -- whatever that means.

There is a disturbance in the Force. It's really scarey that my Windows 95
system at work is more stable than my Macintosh -- SACRILEGE! Please help
me, Obiwans. You're my only hope.

Subject: AFM from Postscript fonts

Hello,

How can one easily create Adobe Font Metrics (AFM) from the Postscript
printer fonts. I know it is possible somehow. I think font creating
programs such as Font Munger can handle such things. Now the problem is I
presumebly will only want to do this once. So buying a program which costs
some $100 and more is out of the question.

The reason I need these AFMs is that I want to teach LaTeX to use these
fonts, which I rather like. I know that there are many AFMs around on the
net, but up to now I have not found the font I want to use.

Another and perhaps easier possibility is that someone who has a copy of
such a font creating program could do the conversion for me. I would
apreciate this very much!

Subject: CGI, HTML and Netscape

I hope this isn't an inappropriate question for Info-Mac but there's
something I've wondered about since dabbling in HTML. Some of my
acquaintances have put forms on their web sites. The results of these forms
are sent to them via e-mail using:

The e-mail message with results they receive is sent from "Mozilla" (and is
a mess, I'll grant you) so I assume it is processed through Netscape
somehow. My question is, is this riding on someone else's coattails? Is it
unethical or a part of Netscape service and an okay thing to do?

This has particularly been on my mind since trying out Pagemill which has
the ability to set up forms for Web pages but not make them do anything. If
Adobe could have programmed a button to add a simple line to mail results
to a specific address, why didn't they? Is it because of the above issue or
something my limited knowledge of HTML doesn't allow me to understand?

There is no alternative to removing the headphone plug, because inserting
the plug opens a switch which physically disconnects the wire to the
internal speakers.

I am working for a large law firm in Michigan. The boss is

Subject: Shifting Columns

Anyone know a way of changing the order things appear in 7.5.1 finder windows
when viewing by Name, Date, etc.? There are times when I would dearly love to
move the "Last Modified" column over next to the "Name" column. It is often a
royal pain to enlarge a couple windows to nearly full-screen size just to
check dates. I know I can turn off the various columns in the "Views" CP, but
I would like to be able to mix up the order.

And, while I'm thinking of it, how about a way of altering the way the date
is written -- Wed, Jan 10, 9:54 PM takes up a lotta real estate when all I'm
really interested in is the 9:54 PM part.

Subject: Shutdown Crashes

I have also had this problem...

What happens is that, whenever shutdown or restart is chosen from the finder,
the mac displays a bomb box. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does
it's annoying, because I have to reach all the way around back to turn the
machine off.

If it helps anyone, I use system 7.5.0 on a IIci. Also, the system does not
appear to be totally broken, because once when I clicked the "Reset" button
(in the bomb box), it asked for a disk and wouldn't shut down until I put it
in (grin :-).

If anyone can help me with this crash, I would greatly appreciate it!

Subject: SuperComments

"I have read about other utilities that
preserve the comments during a rebuild, but I don't recall their names."

I recently installed "Super Comments 2.0.7". From the readme:

Super Comments 2.0.7 is a shareware control panel, which enables your
Macintosh to keep the Finder Get Info comments from being erased when the
desktop is rebuilt. It also permits them to be viewed in the open file
dialogs and edited in the save file dialogs. Super Comments 2.0.7
supersedes CommentKeeper and all commercial versions of Super Comments.

$10 shareware, well worth it. Look for 'disk/super-comments-207-cdev.hqx'.

Keith, this sounds like the Le Cie Silverlining password dialog to me;
though there may be another formatter which puts up $F0 ASCII (opt-shift-k,
filled apple) as its password protector :-)

Silverlining is the formatter I trust most, it's excellent, even if I'm
currently using FWB's HDT. Either of these will take over that drive,
irrespective of the original format program.

But you say "free"...which neither of these is of course....

There's a patch for the Sys 7.5 version of Apple's HD Setup at disk & file/
in the archieve, which let's HD Setup see most drives (instead of just
drives with Apple labels and ROM). It's called . That's where I'd start.

Subject: VAX hiccups (Q)

Kermit is the only choice for up- or downloading on the VAX server I dialup
for e-mail and net access. The problem is that for every 1K I download,
the server re-sends between one and two blocks. The files arrive intact.
How can I fix these hiccups? My default settings seem to agree with the
server's Kermit parameters (though I cannot tell what is needed when the
server's list states a setting in octal numbers, as some are stated).
Thanks if you can help!
