Subject: [*] Addiction Manager 1.0
Addiction Manager 1.0
Addiction Manager is a program for helping people manage addiction to
computer games and other stuff (like the internet). It creates aliases to
programs just like the Finder does. However, with Addiction Manager's
aliases, you can restrict access to your programs.
Version 1.0 is the latest release of Addiction Manager and is a major
update. Here is a list of some of the new features:
- The ability to edit Addiction Manager aliases.
- Using the icons of the original file for the alias.
- Password protection of aliases.
- The ability to make the original file invisible from within
Addiction Manager.
- Addiction Manager can speak your restriction messages aloud if you
have the Speech Manager installed.
- "Weekday" and "Weekend" options for ease of alias creation.
- A read-out of current restrictions for ease of alias creation.
- Balloon help
Addiction Manager is now shareware (US$10). It is fully functional and
is not crippled in any way.
Addiction Manager requires System 7. It is 68000-based code. While it
isn't required, to use Addiction Manager's speech capabilities, you must
have the Speech Manager installed (preferably the most recent version of
PlainTalk).

Subject: [*] BabyTime 1.1
BabyTime is designed to familiarize very young children with the keyboard and
mouse, and entertain them in the process. By banging on the keyboard or
manipulating the mouse, a child can see and hear an avalanche of sounds and
shapes, or "scribble" in color with the mouse. If you don't mind your toddler
banging on your Mac, this is a stimulating experience.
REQ: System 7.0 or later, at least 256 colors. 1.2 MB free RAM. Supports
Speech Manager. Shareware $5.

Attached is version 1.5.1 of Be Fruitful and Multiply, a simple program
which illustrates and drills multiplication tables. The program is meant
for children in grades 3 to 5.
Version 1.5.1 corrects a couple of small bugs. Version 1.5 allowed one to
customize the program with one's own sounds, pictures, and text. One must
use a resource editor such as ResEdit to customize it. Instructions are
included as a readme text document.
Conditions of use and distribution are also included in the readmes.

Subject: [*] PrinterSwitch release 1.0
PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to
easily select among many different printers when you print documents in
your applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.
PrinterSwitch appears right when you need it; when you select Print or
Page Setup from any program. No need to memorize hot key sequences! It can
also be activated by a convenient Control Strip Module.
PrinterSwitch complements Apple's new Desktop Printers because it allows
you to select different print devices even if your application won't let
you drag & drop documents onto a Desktop Printer.
It knows about LaserWriter 7 and 8 PPD files and makes sure to use the
proper PPD for each printer, eliminating a common source of Postscript
printing errors.
PrinterSwitch is shareware with a 14-day free trial period. Registration
is $14.00 for single user licenses; site and worldwide licenses are
available. Convenient registration via Kagi Shareware - pay with any
currency, credit cards, checks, etc. via mail, fax, or the internet.

Changes in Release 1.0:
* Added PrinterSwitch Control Strip Module.
* Added Register program
* Updated documentation

Subject: [A] Auto-set clock via internet?
>Is there any utility that will automatically set my Mac's internal=20
>clock to the correct time via an Internet connection?
Yes MacNTP. I found it on Washington U's Info-mac file area.
Selected pieces from the README:
NTP for Macintosh is a set of software components that synchronize the=
system clock of the Macintosh with other computers in a network. NTP for=
Macintosh is based upon the Internet standard Network Time Protocol,=
Version 2, as described in RFC 1119. This protocol is widely used within=
the TCP/IP community. The protocol features high reliability, low overhead,=
and can provide accuracy to 232 picoseconds. The protocol distributes time=
in a tree topology using clients, servers, peers, and broadcast technology.
Both the NTP Client and NTP Server for the Macintosh Operating System=
support the following features.
=80 Implements Version 2 of the Network Time Protocol algorithms;=
interoperable with both Version 3 and Version 1 implementations
=80 Works on any model Macintosh running System 6.0.5 or later software (it=
is System 7 friendly). Any Macintosh can be a client as well as a server.=
It has been tested on all released System versions from 6.0.5 to 7.5.
=80 Compatible with AppleTalk Phases 1 and 2 (LocalTalk, EtherTalk, and Tok=
enTalk)
=80 Runs quietly, asynchronously in the background; never ties up the Macin=
tosh
=80 Supports balloon help (System 7 only) for all dialogs and controls
=80 32-bit clean
=80 AppleTalk transition event aware
=80 Compatible with dial-in AppleTalk products such as AppleTalk Remote=
Access (ARA), Liaison, and Timbuktu
=80 Compatible with other servers such as Apple=B9s AppleShare, Microsoft=
=B9s Mail Server, and CE Software=B9s QuickMail
=80 PowerManager aware for PowerBooks and Portables
=80 Virtual Memory compatible (System 7 only)
=80 Supports MacTCP and any supported link access protocols including=
Ethernet, SL/IP, LocalTalk, EtherTalk, and others. It has been tested with=
all released versions of MacTCP from 1.0.2 to 2.0.6.
=80 Allows you to synchronize your machine to a corporate (local) time=
standard or to a national time standard (such as WWV managed by NIST, via=
the Internet)
=80 Extremely easy to configure. Configurations can be created and locked;=
distributing pre-configured software around a campus is easy.
=80 Current implementation maintains accuracy to =B11.9 seconds
=80 API provides services for other applications (time stamps, time=
conversion, UTC offset, DST values, clock synchronization status and=
performance, etc.)
NTP Client
=80 The NTP client, server, and broadcast server modes (3, 4, and 5) are=
supported; the symmetric and reserved modes (1, 2, 6, and 7) are not=
currently implemented
=80 Supports communication with one server and/or one broadcast server
=80 Automatically compensates for the local offset from UTC (GMT) based=
upon geographic location as set by the Map Control Panel
=80 Automatically adjusts the clock to account for any local Daylight=
Saving Time policy using easy to configure dialogs
Macintosh OS System 6.0.5 or later is required. MultiFinder is not needed.=
The software provided in this distribution will =80not=80 run under A/UX.
The NTP Client software is available as shareware for a suggested price of=
$25, in U.S. funds, per copy. (For your own protection, please do not send=
cash. Some form of check is your best bet.) Please make your check payable=
to John Dundas. Upon payment of the shareware fee, you will receive one=
copy of the User=B9s Manual (a 90 page manual that describes all of the=
available software including the servers for Macintosh, A/UX, and VAX/VMS),=
will become a registered user, and will be notified of future upgrades to=
the software. Site licensing and volume discounts are available; contact=
the author for details.

In a word, HELP!
Two days ago I used a cartridge on my Zip drive. Today, I push it back in
(it was ejected but not removed) and it asks whether I want to initialize
it! Suddenly, THE DISK IS UNREADABLE!!??? What happened? Can it be
fixed?
I don't know why it can't be read. If I use DiskDup, it can find the disk
header information and tells me how full the disk is, but the disk alone
cannot be read. I'm just so confused. I know the data is there, but it's
like some boot block or something is gone. And it was working fine the
last time I used it.
Any suggestions, disk utilities, anything, would be greatly appreciated.
This is supposed to be a dependable (?) back up solution, and I'm talking
about a full disk of data.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: [Q] What might be causing this printing problem?
Recently I have been experiencing an annoying problem when printing
from MSW 5.1 to an elderly LaserWriter NT using LaserWriter drivers
8.2 or 8.2.3. Initially the green 'printing' light starts flashing but the
off-document arrow cursor on my screen quickly changes to
the I-bar (?) (you know, the thing that looks like the cross-section of
a girder) and then everything on my machine (Quadra 700, S7.5.1)
freezes. After a while the green 'printing' light stops flashing.
Upon restarting the machine I get the usual 'Document xyz could not be
printed because of an error' message - but no specific details. If I opt
to 'Try again' the document invariably (so far, anyway) prints without
further problems. Changing the printer cable has had no effect. Neither has
reinstalling MSW (but keeping and re-using the original Commands,Glossary
and Preference items). Running a variety of diagnostics on the Quadra
shows nothing untoward. This is now happening often enough to be *really*
irritating - like several times a day. Can anyone suggest a cause or -
even better - a cure?

Ah. My point exactly.
impossible to replace it *even with 7.1.2* (hardly a huge leap back)
on their newer machines. Example: the 7100/66 runs 7.1.2 but the 7100/80
will not. This is ridiculous, and certainly does not exhibit good forward
compatibility.
Just as a point of interest, I took a look yesterday at The Conflict
Compendium web page, having seen a posting to the effect that it
had placed highly in a ranking of computer-related sites. This page
lists a total of 22 known conflicts/problems for system 7.1-7.1.2,
and a total of *161* for 7.5-7.5.1. (The total increases to 228 if
7.5.2 is included.) Yes, I realize that this is not a complete or
scientifically proven collection of problems and that other variables
enter in, but it is a good general indicator of the relative stability,
in the real world, of 7.1.x. vs. 7.5.x.
My gripe, however, is not that Apple created 7.5.x, but that they're
forcing us to run it. You are correct in that until recently, Apple
was very good about forward/backward OS compatability, but that
doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Hello,
I'm having a huge problem with my display.
I was presented with a message asking me if I wanted to
recallibrate, and for some foolish reason clicked 'yes'.
Now my screen is black, the little green light goes on, but all I
see is my 'freaked out' reflection. Oh.. and I tried technical
support who are even more baffled than I am.
Is there anyone out here who knows why this happened and what
might be the solution?
Please help!
Thank you.

I'm helping a friend buy a Mac for use as a home computer. He definitely
wants a Mac, but his two sons want to play the latest DOS/Windows games.
Softwindows doesn't support Soundblaster games, so that can be ruled out.
I was shocked to find out that the only Performa model for which the
DOS Compatibility Card option is available is the 6116CD, an underpowered
model.
Wasn't Apple touting DOS Compatibility as a strong selling point just
a short time ago? Why has it nearly disappeared? What should my friend buy?

Thanks so much.

Is anyone planning to program it? If not, is anyone aware of a game

Hi,
Has anyone else encountered a condition where, when trying to invoke help,
the MS Help app complains that the Excel help file is NOT a Help file???
If I then use the Open... menu item and select the Excel help file, it opens.
The wierd thing is that the thing worked for a few weeks, then suddenly
started giving this error. This has happened both on a network-based
installation, and when I installed it locally!
And yes, I've rebuilt my desktop and run Norton... Any hints as to the fix
would be greatly appreciated.

Now for the big question: Is Extension Informant a HyperCard stack or HC
runtime app? One of my clients (I'm a MacThearipist and writer by trade)
reported that his copies of Photoshop and QuarkXPress were infected by
Merry Xmas while using SAM Intercept and the 4.0.7 definitions. My
client's Power Mac does not even have HyperCard (or the player) installed
and has not downloaded the Extension Informant archive. If EI is HyperCard
based, then it probably _was_ infected. If not, Merry Xmas is more
virulent than once thought, or SAM has a bug that reports false positives.
=-=-= Andrew Vernon | [email protected] | http://www.scott.net/~angus =-=-=
[I *think* it is a run-time app. The Merry Xmas virus is hypercard code --
so it can't infect a non-hypercard app. I don't know how to explain the
positives of Photoshop and Quark, however! Since we are dealing with a virus,
I would prefer not to speculate and wait until some experts come forward. Have
you contacted Symmantic tech support to see if it is possible for photoshop
or quark to be infected? -Gordon]

A hardware solution would be nice, so let us know if you manage to do it.
Another solution, less elegant than the one you suggested but
certainly better than DriveLight is MacLights (only if you have an
extended keyboard, though).
This is a tiny init that allows you to assign the three LEDs on the
keyboard to various operations, such as hard disk read/write or floppy
disk read/write. My hard disk goes on the scroll-lock LED (I've never
been able to figure what that particular LED was supposed to indicate
anyway).
I have installed it on various Macs, under system versions 7.1.x and
7.5.x, and it's been working flawlessly.

Subject: Shareware graphics converter?
Hi-diddly ho, Info-Macians!
I'm trying to find a freeware/shareware program that will reduce
color-depth of an graphic image from 32-bit (Thousands) to 16- or 8-bit
Color. I found a lot of programs that do this, but they don't do it well
(Yes, I have tried Graphic Converter). Back in my dark and misguided days
when I used a PC, I used a program called Printshop Pro (shareware program)
that did this job excellently, but I haven't found it's equivalent on the
Mac. I have been introduced to Adobe Photoshop=81, but I only have a
Performa 637 with 8 MB. And besides, seeing as this is all I want to do,
using Photoshop could be analagous to killing a mosquito with a napalm
bomb! =3D->
Can anyone help me on this?

Subject: Which Formatting Utility to use?
I've had my internal harddrive formatted by MacPeak Spot On 2.3.1 for a
couple of years. The main reason for this is my "need for speed" (MacPeak
Spot On uses a special caching algorithm which have increased the
harddrives performance by approx. 20-40%).
However since it's seems to be impossible to contact MacPeak (I've emailed
them a few times) for an update, I'm thinking about getting another
formatting utility.
The utilities I'm aware of are : FWB Harddisk Toolkit, APS Powertools,
Silverlining and Drive 7.
My question is which one of these utilities (or if there is anyone alse)
would be best for me, considering my "need for speed" to use?

Subject: Why not OT 1.1b16 on P6300?
I've been using Open Transport 1.1b11 on my Performa 6300CD and Powerbook
5300 for some time now and I've never had any problems. I downloaded the
latest, 1.1b16 this weekend and after installing it on my Performa and
rebooting, MacTCP has been resurrected from the dead. Closer inspection
showed that the OT files were invisible. So, I made them visible and
rebooted and they were invisible again.
The next thing I tried was installing OT and forcing the installer to
quit when it wanted to reboot. That relaunched the Finder and I could
see all the files (such as the OT libraries and the Appletalk and TCP/IP
control applications) where they were supposed to be. Reboot and they're
invisible again.
Just today in TidBITs, I read that OT 1.1b16 will not work on a 6300 or a
5300. Ok, that answers my question about whether I'm going insane or
not, but it doesn't tell me why a previous beta did work. And, why are
the Performas special? I know some of the earlier Performas ran on a
slightly bastardized version of the system, but now? Its a PPC 603.
Any light on this subject would be, well, enlightening.

From: [email protected] (Thomas Zot Ljungberg)
The recent thread, concerning in what order the Mac searches for a volume
to boot from, have been a quite confusing mix of correct and incorrect
statements.
The actual search order, according to manuals and my experience, is:
1. Internal floppy drive 1.
2. Internal floppy drive 2.
3. External floppy drive.
(Note: if the mouse button is down, the floppies will be ejected.)
4. The unit set in the Startup Disk control panel.
5. Unit with SCSI ID #0 (usually the internal drive).
6-11. Units with SCSI ID #6, #5, #4, #3, #2, #1, in that order.
12. Again, unit with SCSI ID #0 (usually the internal drive).
The Command-Option-Shift-Delete combination will cause the Mac to ignore
the unit with SCSI ID #0. Note: if some other disk has been chosen as the
Startup Disk, it will be booted from, i.e. this key combination will *not*
cause the Mac to "forget the chosen Startup Disk", it will cause it to
"forget SCSI ID #0".
