I wouldn't worry, since they probably won't charge you for it. I suggest
that you pick up the June issue of MacUser. The CD-ROM is included with
newstand copies, just as System Update 1.0 was included last year.
You probably already know this, but you should always keep track of

Subject: (Q) Netscape 2.02 crashes heinously - help!
I've just spent a terribly frustrating afternoon trying to coax Netscape
2.02 into working again on my system. ** Until this morning, I had been
using Netscape 2.01 and 2.02 flawlessly on my Mac. **
Here are the configuration details: PowerBook 520, 16MB RAM, System 7.1.1;
MacTCP 2.04, Free PPP 2.5; Netscape Version: Macintosh 2.02.
And here's what happened: while viewing a Web page this morning, Netscape
2.02
locked up. Locked up COLD. Hung the entire system. I had to
power-cycle-reboot.
When the system came back up, I ran Norton on the disk (just in case)...
it reported that all was well.
I attempted to start up Netscape 2.02. Halfway through the starting-up
process, Netscape terminated with the extremely helpful error message:
"Application unknown has unexpectedly quit because an error of type 1
occurred."
Restarted. Attempted to launch again. Same result.
Ran Norton AND MacTools diagnostics. Report: All is well.
All other applications (Word, BBEdit, Fetch, etc.) are behaving normally.
Hmm, I say to myself, the Netscape application must be corrupted.
I reinstall Netscape. Try to launch. Same result.
Hmm, I say to myself, some Netscape configuration file not replaced during
the re-install must be corrupted; let's jerk everything with the word
"Netscape" on it off of the hard disk, including the preferences files and
related matter stored in the system folder, reboot, and reinstall.
Did that. Re-installed. Tried to launch. Same result.
At this point, I rebuilt the desktop, zapped the PRAM, and sacrificed a
small animal in front of the keyboard.
Tried to launch. Same result.
Had to get some work done, so I FTPed in copies of Mosaic, Newswatcher,
and Claris Emailer Trial Version. All working just fine.
This almost *has* to be a screwed-up configuration file, somewhere.
Doesn't it?
I've taken every single Netscape file that I can find off of the hard
drive.
Before I do a complete backup, reformat, and reinstallation, does anyone
out there have any ideas? Netscape "Technical Support" (and I use that
term *very* loosely) has thrown up its collective hands and shrugged.
Please reply via e-mail to [email protected]; I will post a summary of replies
when and if the problem is actually determined.

This is just BAD software not a bad OS! If things are written properly
then they shouldn't need huge amounts of memory unless the're Photoshop
likely since the application can be less careful about leaks and bad
pointers since they take much longer to tread on each other!
You should be petitioning the vendors for better written software not Apple
for more RAM.

Is a whole 40megs really necessary? It would greatly raise the prices of
macs, and just an expensive extra to people who don't need it. Macs are
already having trouble in the PC market in terms of being competitive
price-wise. They don't need one more thing against them. Not everyone
needs 40 megs of memory.

Nonsense. Of course it wouldn't work. For two reasons, (1) because
the question here is of the underscore *character*, not the underline
*format*, and (2) because the initial poster wanted to add a format to
the string of character contained *within* the underscores. The RTF
route, as described by Darrah Chavey and myself, is the only way to
solve the problem, other than using a word processor with grep
capabilities, such as Word 6.

Subject: [Q] net wierdness
I wonder if any wizards out there can explain this curious thing.
In my shop I connect the various Macs and PCs with thin Ethernet. In one
corner, I have set up an FTP and e-mail server on an old Mac II CX (MacTCP,
System 7.51). It works well, and is "visible" to all the other Macs and PCs
in the office and the outside world also.
This week, I installed Apple's latest and greatest: a 150-MHz PowerMac
9500. It of course runs System 7.53 and OT. As a good Mac should, it worked
with all my applications "out of the box." The only incompatibility was
with MacsBug (whatever version was on the Apple site as of May 14), which
somehow prevents File Sharing from starting up. With some regret, I ditched
MacsBug.
The wierd thing: The CX mail/ftp server is visible to every Mac in the
building -- except to this one PowerMac. This applies both to TCP/IP
services and to AppleShare (in the Chooser). And every Mac can see the
PowerMac as an AppleShare server -- except the CX. In other words, other
machines (including a Quadra running 7.53 and OT) can see both of these,
but they can't see each other.
BTW, there is only one AppleTalk zone and one Ethernet segment in the net.

Yes... I had the same problem on my two months old Zip drive connected
to a PowerMac 6100/66. I tryed to check the drive using HDT tools. I
obtained an error message of such kind: "error positioning" or something
like that. I tested the Zip on another computer (a PowerMac 6100/60) but
the problem was all the same, clicking noise and the Zip not recognising
the disk. I thought this was due to disk problem but when I tryed to
format the disk the drive destroyed all the data stored in it. The same
problem occured with another disk; since then I've never tryied to mount
other cartridges. I called the Zip Europe. A kind recordered message
responded; not very usefull.... I think that the problems depend on
defective heads.
Today I'll send the ZIP to the dealer that selled me the ZIP here in
Italy. Hope this will help...

I recently upgraded an 8100/110 from System 7.5.1 to 7.5.3. Nothing else
really changed. Previously I could turn on DS 4.2 when leaving and in the
morning type in my password. Now I find the system locked, but still powered
on. If I do a CMD-OPT-ESC I can force quit DS and do a restart, but that is
not what I should have to do.
The system stays alive all night if I don't run DS. Plus it seems to be 12

Any ideas?

Is your disk driver fully compatible with SCSI Manager 4.3? Many
problems w/ MacOS 7.5.3 are caused by older disk drivers, not compatible
with the SCSI Manager integrated in 7.5.3.

The problem is that AutoCAD is not a native PowerMac application. There
are no announced plans for future versions. So it seems you a stuck, since
the PowerMac has an FPU, it just is not used/implemented by Apple's 680LC40

Of course it's slow. That's because it emulates a 680x0 FPU. For serious
work you should run a native PPC version of your application. That's the
most efficient solution.

My experiences were mixed. My TelePort Gold II was bundled with my
Performa 6115, technically making support Apple's responsibility.
However, when Apple released SerialDMA late last year, I encountered a
conflict between the GlobalFax software and any form of online
communications. Apple recommended upgrading to a newer version of the
software, but the upgrade cost $30 and may or may not have worked. Global
Village refused to even consider providing the upgrade at no charge or
any other assistance in solving the problem. At my first opportunity,
bought a new 28.8 modem, not a Global Village.
My feeling was that for the cost of sending out a floppy, they could have
provided the kind of service that shows a serious concern for the users
of their products, whether or not they had a specific obligation to do
so. Given that there are thousands of Performa buyers out there who
figure to be potential customers for 28.8 modems, I think it would have
been just plain good business. And hey, I asked very nicely.

If you can somehow get your 5.25" disk of AppleWorks files into an
Apple IIGS running System 6.0 or 6.1, getting the files onto a 3.5"
disk will be a snap. System 6 for the IIGS can read Mac-formatted
3.5" diskettes. Simply drag the AppleWorks files from the 5.25"
disk onto the Mac-formatted 3.5" disk, pop the latter disk into your
Mac, and fire up ClarisWorks. ClarisWorks has several AppleWorks
translators to easily convert your files into ClarisWorks format.

I use Print Shop Deluxe on my PowerWave 132 with MacOS 7.5.3 (system
update 2.0) and it works with my HP 855C without a hitch. Since you
already have the new HP drivers, I can't really explain this, but I know
Broderbund's tech support have revealed some amazing features hidden in
their software (and saved my butt) more than once.
Most recently they showed me how to bring up a hidden dialog box that
would let me configure TypeStyler 2.0 with my HP printer. It was doing
something similar to what you describe (shooting out blank pages) so
maybe they can help you too! You might give them a call. Their number
is (415)382-4700 and their URL is www.broderbund.com
FYI: They told me to go to the print dialog box and click cancel while
holding down the option key. This brought up another dialog box that
allowed me to configure my printer as a generic QuickDraw printer and
that worked perfectly!
If there's anything else I can do to help, feel free to write back.

i had this happen about a month ago, a continuous clicking sound when i put
zip disks in. this started happening when i accidently put a disk in when
the drive wsa running (oops!). i called iomega tech support and after
getting the phone shuffle, was told to send in the drive. for the cost of
shipping (they pay return fare) the heads got replaced. i guess it must be
a common repair, because in a touch tone menu, the first choice was "If
your Zip Drive makes a clicking sound when you insert a disk...". you
probably should call them.

JPEG is a cross-platform format. It doesn't matter on which platform the
image was created. As long as it's transfered to your Mac correctly any
JPEG-capable application (e.g. JPEGView, Jade, GraphicConverter,
Photoshop, Canvas) should be able to display it (some applications may
require the QuickTime extension to display JPEG pictures).

What you need, Steve, is the Apple PlainTalk microphone. It'll cost

You can use a standard 3.5mm jack (the added length in the Apple
PlainTalk jack is to connect the microphone to a power source for
amplification). But you should be aware of this. The are three
categories of microphone signals: mic, line, and professional line (in
order of increasing voltage level). Apple PlainTalk microphones (the
kind recommended for use with the 7100) produces line level signal. If
you are trying to use a microphone which generates only mic level
signal, the signal will be too low and there will be a lot of noise and
distortion; hence you will need to use a microphone preamplifier to
boost the signal to line level.

Many thanks to all who gave advice. My final solution was to idle my
internal HD, staying with the external APS, switch off all extensions, no
Disinfectant, use Anarchie for download, with a new copy of Stuffit
Expander. Now I've got it, without damaged data forks and error messages.
To help others who might share my agonies over the past days, I believe the
problem stemmed from my two active HD's. I use Now Utilities Multimaster as
a launcher, and some items are from the APS and the rest from the Mac HD.
Some of the items on the destop belong to the internal HD, and some to the
external APS drive. The confusion arose, earlier, when I was having trouble
with the APS, and ran from the Mac internal HD. Now that my APS is OK, I
use it exclusively, leaving the internal for back-up.

I have a PowerWave 604/150 at work and am experiencing the oddest
problem: My delete/backspace key only works with about a 3-4 second

more or less says, "Duh" (but then, that's the reaction to most of our

There is one possibility (which might or might not be applicable here).
There is known bug in System 7.x with aliases of applications residing
on a different volume. After a desktop rebuild the drag-and-drop
capabilities of such aliases are lost. The alias retains the link to its
parent application, but it can't do d-and-d any longer. (This bug
doesn't affect aliases which reside on the same volume as the parent
application.) The only way to cure this bug I know of (other than
re-creating the alias) is J.W. Walker's AliasDragon (available on
Info-Mac), which scans all mounted volumes and restores the d-and-d
capabilities.

Mike, it's very simple, it's in the manual and the FAQ'S: never connect or
disconnect a SCSI device to a computer which is on. And: sleep is on.
One evening you'll plug in and have worse problems than a crash in the
morning (which is completely expectable, at this level of technology - no,
Virginia, SCSI Probe is _not_ the way out of this one safely).
You won't have a logic board...

Subject: Something like Novell Userlist?
I am looking for a utility to divine the whereabouts of machines for
which a hardware reference is given. For instance, when a Mac tries to
use an IP number which is already in use, a message is displayed saying
something like, "the IP number 127.0.0.0 [some IP number] could not be
used because the machine at hardware address 00 00 00 00 00 00 [some
six-figure hex number] is using that address."
I know that Novell netware has a utility called userlist which lists,
among other things, the hardware address of all known active nodes. This
helps greatly with getting to the bottom of IP number conflicts, but
unfortunately, I know of no such utility for the Mac. If anyone has any
ideas or knows of commercial or shareware software that will give say, an
AppleTalk zone and machine name for every hardware address, your help
would be greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering if this is something that is not directly related to ZIPs but
to all removable media. I have had similar problems an number of times with
regualr floppies as well.
The latest example was just last night, as a matter of fact. I had a large
Compact Pro archive split across a number of floppies. When I tried to
dearchive it to my 5200 HD, It read the last archive (for TOC info, etc)
and requested that I load the first part of the archive. I pressed Eject in
the file dialog, inserted disk 1 and was immediately requested to insert
disk 5 again. In one case, I ended up an eternal disk shuffle, in another,
I ended up with disk one
in the slot but it did not appear on the desktop or in the file dialog.
Things like this have shown up occasionally before and do not seem to be
directly related to any particular program other than the Finder.
Anyone else?

I have had an EZ135 drive since they first became available last year. I
can't comment on the estimated life span of the cartridge other than to say
that I certainly think it would be longer than the Zip cartridge because of
the way it is encased. I have had absolutely no trouble with the software
but the first drive I got was defective. I returned it and immediately was
sent a replacement. The tech support staff at Syquest were very helpful in
helping me determine that the problem was in the drive and not in the
software driver as the vendor's tech staff had said. In summary, I am very
pleased with this drive and have recommended it to several of my friends.
