Subject: [*] Extension Overload
This program review about 100 extensions that are commonly found in
Extension Folder on every Mac. For those who do not know much about the
extensions, this program gives you some idea about the extensions. So that
you can decide what extension is necessary for your computer and what is
not. Located in your system folder, extension add a number of function to
your Mac to make your Mac more powerful. SOME extension will do nothing but
EAT up MEMORY. It is very difficult to know how much memory an extension
will use (25K ? 105K ? 88K ? 800K ? .... ) because memory usage for
extension is very weird. They increase their memory when they are in use
and shrinks back when they are no.
Now we come to DISK SPACE. An extension file can take only a little disk
space (maybe 13k) as well as over 1 MB but that is not all, bugs in
extension can also crash your Mac and slow down your computer too.

Subject: [*] Hybrid Filename Checker 1.0.1
Hybrid Filename Checker
MacOS Version (only)
Revision 1.0.1
What does this utility do?
To share files across multiple computer platforms, files must conform to the
lowest common denominator of file naming conventions, namely ISO9660. This
utility lists all files in a selected folder (and sub folders) that do not
conform to ISO9660, DOS '8.3' / Windows 3.1 or Windows95 naming
conventions. Folder names, lowercase characters and invalid DOS extensions
can also be checked for.
This utility is particularly useful in the production of hybrid (cross
platform) CD-ROMs where all shared files names must conform to ISO9660.
Version 1.0.1 removes the comma in filename bug, amongst other fixes.

Subject: [*] MacSOUP 2.1, an offline reader for news and mail
MacSOUP is an offline reader for news and mail (it can be used for
news only, if you prefer Eudora for mail).
It works either with a Unix shell account (in conjunction with uqwk),
or with a TCP/IP connection (MacTCP or Open Transport).
Features:
- can fetch only article headers in a first pass; lets you select
which articles you actually want to download
- true References-based threading, with a graphical display of the
thread tree
- kill file (with regular expressions)
- multiple mailboxes with mail filters
Changes from 2.0:
- several bug fixes
- support for news authentication
- manual purge command
- and more, see "Version History" for details
MacSOUP 2.1 is shareware ($20).

Subject: (A) Kill Spam Dead in NewsWatcher
Well, I found the answer. It simply involves using the
"Contains Regular Expression" rather than the "Contains String"
command.
Here's the step-by-step for using YA-Newswatcher for spamkilling:
In order to get YA-Newswatcher to do this for you, after you launch the
application, select the Filters menu item from the menubar, and select
Edit Filters.
By default, you'll have two filters showing up: one called simply ".",
and one which shows whatever group is at the top of your list of
subscribed groups.
By default, the program will select the latter -- so you need to select
".", which is the master filter for all groups.
Then hit the Edit button.
A dialog box comes up:
What you want to change are the following:
the Subject popup
the "Contains the String" popup
and the Label popup.
Click on the Subject popup, and select Newsgroups;
Click on the "Contains the String" popup, and select "Contains the Reg.
Exp.;"
Click on the Label popup and select Killed
Now you have a global filter in which you can deposit your kill string;
as in rn, I recommend .*,.*,.*,.*,.* as a good starting string.
Hit okay, and then call up the any group you like -- you should be
rewarded with a string of kills, unless you only read carefully moderated
groups
Have fun, and please let me know if you enjoy using this filtering technique.
I'm separately submitting a binhexed self-extracting archive of this
in Word 5.0 format, complete with Spiffy Screenshots of the default
appearance of the dialog box and the what it looks like once you've used
the popups....

I've tested my installation by launching the MacGS Viewer application and

my desktop or one layer down (say in Macintosh HD:Applications folder)
everything works fine. However, if I put the Ghostscript folder two layers

Subject: Hot 5200
I've just had my 5200 returned to me after five weeks at the service
dealer, where it had a new video board fitted. It now seems to get
excessively hot, most noticeably on top, at the back, around the vents.
Also, CDs ejected from the internal drive feel very hot as well, even after
having been in there for only a couple of minutes. Is this usual? I don't
remember the machine getting this hot before (any hotter and I wouldn't be
able comfortably to touch the top of the machine), but I could be wrong. Am
I a little paranoid?
Thought I'd ask here first since I don't want to lose any more time with
the machine if I can help it: I've had 3 video boards fitted in 8 months.
Total: 11 weeks at the dealer, out of use.
So, hands on your Performa: can you feel the heat?
Thanks for any advice,

Subject: Indeo Exntensions for Viewing AVI
In case anyone is interested, I have located the Indeo extension
files on the Intel Web site (http://www.intel.com/). The file name is
i32qtft.bin. It is a MacBinary II file. After decoding it becomes an
installer named "Indeor video R3.2 FAT installer."
The Installer installs two extensions ("Indeor Video" and "Intel Raw
Video"), a read me file, a file containing two Color LookUp Tables
(CLUT), and an application ("MakeItMooV"). The extensions are placed
in the extensions folder and the other files are placed in a new
folder named "Indeor video R3.2 Fat" which is placed in the location
of your choice.
>From my reading of the documentation (which is written for Multimedia
developers), the extensions by themselves will not allow you to view
AVI files. A viewer application can call these extensions to decode
AVI which allows viewing via QuickTime. This is what I assume the
Microsoft Internet Explorer is doing.
The CLUT file is for MultiMedia developers. The MakeItMooV
application changes the file type of a file to MooV and the creater
to TVOD. This allows QuickTime movies downloaded in a format other
than MacOS to be opened by QuickTime applications such as
MoviePlayer.
Anyone feel like writing an AVI Viewer Netscape Plug in which call
the extensions?

Subject: Indeo Extensions (for AVI)
For those a bit confused by recent postings on the "playing AVI movies"
issue, the Intel Indeo extensions are what is needed and work best. Yes,
Microsoft Internet Explorer plays AVI movies, but require the Indeo
extensions to do so (like MoveiPlayer plays Quicktime movies, but only if
the Quicktime extension is loaded). The installer for MS Internet Explorer
places the Intel Indeo extensions in your Extension folder.
You can find info on Intel Indeo at
http://www.intel.com/pc-supp/multimed/indeo/ and a link from there to
download the extensions at
ftp://ftp.intel.com/pub/IAL/multimedia/indeo/quicktime/. The file is
i32qtft.bin.
You could also just download the MS Internet Explorer package from the
Microsoftw Web site, which includes the Indeo extensions.

Now Menus, a component of Now Utilities (currently in v.6.0.1, I believe)
allows this behavior - or, alternatively, keeps menus down once clicked on
rather than letting them disappear when the mouse button is released.
It's my understanding that much or all of Now Utilities is now native for
PPC; in any case, it works as described above on my PowerWave 120

I'd recommend this package for two or three of its component parts, any one
of which is worth the price of the whole.

At work we have a couple of "NT Advanced servers" (not sure of the
terminology here, bear with me). They offer Appleshare services (I assume
it's part of the standard package, because if it cost extra our IS guys
would not have bought it for us few miserable Mac users). That allows
Mac's to connect to designated server volumes through Appleshare (in the
Mac's chooser) as if they we're any old Appleshare server.
This doesn't help with accessing WFWG and NT Workstation clients directly
of course, but if you have a central server it's the way to go. And you
know, for Microsoft, it works amazingly well! Maps 3-letter DOS extensions
to Mac Creator/File Type codes too, so that Windows-created files show up
with the right icon (and thus can be double-clicked to launch) on the Mac.

Subject: Now Super Boomerang Conflict
As usual, I'm sure that I'm at the root of my extension conflict problems, but
I *like* the stuff that I'm using, and I don't want to turn off extensions
unnecessarily. Perhaps someone else has had a similar experience in this area
and can shed some light on my quandary.
Several weeks ago I loaded up a new 7600/120 with all my favorite programs and
System 7.5.3, which came installed with the machine and on CD. Among other
things, I have installed the May update version of Now Utilities 6.0, and the
PPC version of MS Office. Although I do not use the dreaded Office Manager,
or any "MS Mail" features, the system hangs up whenever any of the new MS
programs come to a save dialog box. Now Startup manager shows Now Super
Boomerang in the box entitled "Link Summary: Incompatible-File Dialog
Modifiers." However, only the new PPC versions of MS programs such as Word
6.0 and Excel 5.0 crash at the save dialog. No other programs, including the
680 based Word 5.1a and Excel 4.0 crash under Super Boomerang. Turning off
Super Boomerang fixes the problem, but I like *it* more than I like the MS PPC
based programs...but I would like to have _both_. Might there be another
Microsoft extension that I don't need to load that is causing the problem? If
you have any suggestions for me, I would be glad to give them a try.
Please direct responses to [email protected], because the DEC based
"TeamLinks" mail utility that we are forced to use breaks up the info-mac
digest into itty bitty little attachments that render a well designed digest
into useless mush (another problem I have yet to solve).
Thanks!

The ROM slot probably allows an additional ROM to be added, in case Apple=
wants to replace or supplement the soldered-in ROM.
The empty bay underneath your hard drive can be used to install another 3.5"=
hard disk drive. There should be an extra SCSI connector and a drive power=
connector at the back of that spare bay, so you can hook up any SCSI drive=
that will fit the space.
Also, the case has a panel on the front which can be removed if you want to=
install a drive that needs to be able to eject its disks, like an Iomega=
ZIP drive or SyQuest EZ-135 drive.
If you want to install a drive in the spare bay, you'll need a drive=
mounting kit for the PM 7200 which will allow a drive to be fastened in=
there securely. You should be able to get it from an Apple dealer. They=
can also install the new drive for you, for a fee.

Bob, virtual memory is very basic in nature -- the OS simply begins to
substitute space on your hard disk when it runs out of real RAM space on
your SIMMs. The problem, of course, is that the hard disk is _no_where_
near as fast as silicon chips (which handle information at roughly the
speed of light). So your Mac's performance suffers.
RAM Doubler, on the other hand, goes about it in a different way. First,
it attempts to compress information as it is being written to the RAM
chips (like StuffIt on the fly, but to chips instead of a disk). Only
when it has crammed all it can into the chips does it start swapping
things to your hard disk.
Using RAM Doubler on an 8Mb machine is NOT as good as buying another 8Mb
of SIMMs, though. (why fake it if you can get the real thing?) The
_bare_ minimum that I am recommending to clients is 8Mb for a 680x0 Mac,
and 16Mb minimum for a Power Mac. If you add RAM Doubler, it's best used
in addition to the correct amount of RAM in the first place -- otherwise
your Mac will still suffer speed loss (though not as bad as VM).
You may also recognize that your Power Mac doesn't always out--perform
the 'ancient' 68040 Macs -- that's because it is having to 'emulate' an
older-style Mac to run any software that doesn't say, "Accelerated for
Power Macintosh". (Newer software will run quite nicely, though) The
best way to improve upon this 680x0 emulation is to get Connectix's Speed
Doubler. It replaces the MacOS 680x0 emulator with its own, which is
much faster.
MacWarehouse (800/696-1727) sells both RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler in a
bundle for $89.95 Part#UTI0666]. Although it seems to be a lot of extra
money after you already paid a bit for your new hardware, the increase in
speed and stability are well worth it. If at all possible, go for the
software bundle _and_ the additional 8Mb SIMMS; but don't bother with the
software if you don't get the chips. /Dan (w/no .sig file because no one
wants to see it/know who I am...)

I tried, and failed, to install a universal 7.5.3 on my Quadra 800. Looking
again at the instructions, they now seem to me to say that the universal
installation is only available if you are *running under* System 7.5.0 (not
7.5.1 or 7.5.2). Is this correct? (First time round I thought it only meant
that you had to have 7.5.0 *on* the disk you were trying to upgrade to
universal 7.5.3.)

Subject: System 7.5.3 install that works!
For all those having trouble with System 7.5.3 and Microsoft Word, We have
struggled with this for several months. Here is a solution that hasn't had a
freeze in four days. This on a Power Mac 6100 that was crashing or freezing
3+ times a day:
1. Zap the PRAM!
2. Use Drive Setup 1.0.4 to install the newest driver.
3. Use Norton Utilities (or some other utility to correct any problems on the
HD.
4. Restart the Mac with extensions turned off (Shift down).
5. Do a CLEAN INSTALL with Sys 7.5 (command-Shift K) (assuming you have
enough room).
6. After it finishes, allow the computer to restart normally (with all
extensions running).
7. Restart once again as per #4 above. (DO NOT follow Apple's instructions -
don't start up with 7.5 extensions on!)
8. Go through the upgrade to Sys 7.5.3.
9. When done, restart Mac normally as in step #6.
10. After it has restarted, open the System folder. Remove (to a separate
folder if you wish to keep for old times sake) Apple Menu Options and
Macintosh Easy Open Control Panels. AMO causes Word to freeze or crash under
certain circumstances, MEO causes automatic rebuild of the HD if you have
prev rebuilt with extensions off. It also can cause damage to the system
software.
11. Restart with shift down. When the notice is given,"Extensions Off",
release the shift key and hold down the command + option keys to rebuild the
desktop.
12. Whenever you install ANY software, install with extensions OFF!
13. It works.
At this point, you need to transfer any third party extns & cps to the new
folder a few at a time to test for problems.
Note:
If you want the functionality of Apple Menu Options, put a copy of
BeHirrarchic (3.0 or better) in your control panels folder. It hasn't crashed
here in two days.

Subject: Translator wanted for MacZine - an italian e-zine
Hello,
I'm one of the editors of MacZine, the italian Mac Shareware e-zine!
MacZine comes out each month in two versions: MacZine Classic (in italian) and
MacZine International (in english).
We have a wondeful official english translator for MacZine but we've
realized that the work is too much for one person alone.
Now we are looking for someone wanting to translate our italian articles in
english, in order to create a little "translators team". He/she should know
either italian and english very well (one of the language should be his/her
original language) and he/she should like to work with us on a volunteer
basis.
As our readers know, we make MacZine for free in our free time, for your and
our
pleasure.
If you're interested please write to MacZine's chief, Aaron Ghirardelli, at:

That will indeed get you the entire set of Espy bitmaps, both serif and
sans (but no TrueType). However, if you just "convert" the extension to a
suitcase and treat it like a font, you may be in for some very weird
System behavior! I know, since I did exactly that, and it took me two
days to track down the cause of the problem. What should be done is to
copy the font bitmaps into a *new* font suitcase. Or duplicate an
existing suitcase, empty it, rename it, and use it to hold the Espy
bitmaps.

Dan's idea is great to get bit mapped Espy fonts but he doesn't mention
that the resultant font folder is still 800K (because it is really the
apple guide extension with a new type code). To save space, open the
suitcase and drag the font files to an empty font suitcase. That new
suitcase will only be 80K. Name this one "Espy Sans" (not Epsy sans) and
put it in the fonts folder.

Also I wish to upgrade my colour graphics from 256 colours,
what is the most I can get thousands or millions?
