Subject: [*] bib.db.1.6

This is "bib. db." (vers 1.6), a FileMaker Pro (2.1) database that will
generate both footnotes & bibliographical references according to the type
of source you have. I produced this database to track literature for my PhD
dissertation in history. Its output is flagged for formatting by a word-
processor (Includes Nisus Macro to do the job), but also can provide a
non-formatted output for those who don't want to fiddle with that stuff or
don't have Nisus. The database determines the bibliographical item's source
type by itself. (e.g., whether it is an article, monograph, dissertation, &
cetera).

This version has a new layout for producing an annotated bibliography,
fixed some of the old layouts, and a new script for transferring a
bibliographical citation to Nisus.

Comes with instructions. Is configured also to automatically send a
footnote citation over to Nisus where it's automatically formatted.

Subject: [*] ChatNet 2.0.1

ChatNet provides direct communication and file transfer at the touch
of a key. ChatNet offers two modes for Chat. The AppleTalk Mode allows
chat on a Local Area Network with or without a Server. The IRC Mode
allows chat through an Internet Relay Chat Server. ChatNet acts as a
client program providing a button oriented graphical interface for all
IRC functions.

ChatNet's simple interface will be familiar to anyone who uses major
online services and quickly learned by those who haven't experienced
network communications. Users interact via public and private
conferences, send private messages, and transfer files to each other.

ChatNet can provide security and control over the entire Chat
environment as everyone is concerned about the possibility of children
encountering unsuitable material or conversation, especially on the
Internet. ChatGuardian and ChatWatcher preference settings give
complete control over the ChatNet environment from completely open to
very restrictive. ChatGuardian gives you control over channel access
and message content by screening out words and phrases that are
preselected. ChatWatcher keeps a log of all user activity. IRC Server
access can also be controlled.

ChatNet is the perfect tool for homes, schools, businesses, and
departmental workgroups. Hold online group conferences or have
one-to-one private communication. Workgroups can discuss project
status, strategy, and reach each other for questions and answers at
the click of a button. All communication can be saved or printed for
later reference.

Subject: [*] Mac CallerID 1.1.3f

The new version 1.1.3 of Mac Caller ID by Lee Cohen, uploaded at the request
of the author.

Mac CallerIDc is a shareware application that will display and
store specific information provided by your local telephone
company. You must subscribe to your local telephone company's
"caller information and identification service," commonly known
as Caller ID. This application is similar to the Caller ID
boxes available in many stores, but is available at a fraction
of the cost. A lot of work went into the application, and
hopefully you will agree that it is worth the nominal fee or
more.

The caller's name, number, date and time can be displayed as
a single call or in a list of all calls. Mac CallerID should
work in the United States, Canada and Sweden.

Mac CallerIDc REQUIRES THAT YOU ARE IN AN AREA WHERE CALLER ID
IS AVAILABLE, YOU ARE A SUBSCRIBER AND HAVE A MODEM THAT
SUPPORTS CALLER ID.

What is Caller ID?

Caller ID is a way for you to determine who is calling before
you answer the phone. Between the first and second rings,
the phone company sends information about who is calling.
Not all the information is always available, many times the
call might have originated from an area that does not support
Caller ID. At other times the call may be blocked by the
calling party.

REQUIREMENTS

* Desktop Macintosh
* System 7 or greater
* Modem with Caller ID support
* Caller ID service must be provided by your local telephone
company and you must subscribe to the service.

Subject: [*] Mac Manager 3.1.2 Demo

Mac Manager Demo is a full working version of Mac Manager Personal
Edition with only a few limitations. A complete user's manual is
provided in Word 5 format and should be printed for complete
information. This file is a Disk Copy 4.2 disk image. The Demo must be
installed from a floppy disk.

What is Mac Manager and why was it rated four mice in the April '96 issue
of MacUser?

* More than just security for Macs in multi-user environments
* Desktop management
* Total system security
* A Copland (System 8) style interface
* Virus protection
* Screen saver with screen lock
* Personal folder management with disk quota control

Mac Manager's interface totally emulates Finder. Users are provided
many of the features of Copland (System 8) while still running System
6 or System 7. Users can set custom desktop styles such as 3-D,
Hi-Tech, or Kids, and can perform multiple simultaneous file-copy
operations. Mac Manager is easy to use and simple to set up using
guided step-by-step on screen instructions. Users are limited to
launching and using applications, documents, control panels, and Apple
Menu Items made available through customized setups. Users can be
restricted on Open and Save actions to a floppy disk, personal folder,
drop folders, open only folders, and public folders.

Mac Manager can control a user's daily time, printer pages, inserting
of floppy disks, and the ejecting of CDs. A detailed log tracks ALL
user activity, including time on applications. A hard disk encryption
utility restricts all access if booting from another System disk.

Mac Manager is compatible with System 6.0.5-7.5.x and is accelerated
for the Power Macintosh. Site license editions support and take full
advantage of all Macintosh networks, and include a complete set of
network management tools provided by the application Net Manager(tm).
Tools to control all networked computers from any workstation include
shutdown, restart, launch, quit, copy, delete, mount, unmount, empty
trash, set clock, lock keyboard, login, logoff, and more.

Subject: [*] SmartKeys 3.0--add real quotes and much more

SmartKeys 3.0 is a shareware control panel designed to help you type.
SmartKeys does this in three ways. First, it automatically corrects
typing that violates conventional typesetting rules, such as typing more
than one consecutive space. Second, it automatically corrects fast typing
errors, words that are often misspelled, such as "teh" for "the" and
"THe" for "The". Third, in the event of a system crash, it can keep a log
of what was typed.

Try out SmartKeys for thirty days for free. SmartKeys is not crippled in
any way but after the thirty day free trial period, SmartKeys will begin
posting registration reminders. However, if you like it, please pay the
shareware fee of $15 (US).

SmartKeys 3.0 supersedes SmartKeys 2.1.

Subject: [*] VideoPlayground 1.5 -- a collection of digital video toys

VideoPlayground is a mixed bag of digital video tricks. I wrote
VideoPlayground because there are very few products on the market that
allow enthusiasts to do things with digital video besides recording to
hard disks.

Some of the toys in the playground:
* Video Trigger. Create motion-sentive areas associated with files.
When motion is dected under such a trigger the associated file will
launch. E.g., if it's a sound file it will play, if it's an AppleScript
it will execute, etc.

* Time Lapse w/Motion Sensitivity. You can make time lapse movies that
optionally accelerate recording when one of the triggers has activated.

* Beach Ball. If you attach any file named 'Beachball' onto the video
window, it will bounce around on the screen. It bounces off foreground
objects in the video (your hand, for example).

VideoPlayground is shareware. US$25 for individuals, $100 per user for
businesses.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
* A QuickTime-compatible video source (AV Macs, a Connectix QuickCam, a
Video Spigot, etc.).
* A PowerMac or 68000. VideoPlayground is fat.
* System 7.5 is recommended, but 7.1 will work.
* It's a lot more fun if you have a video camera, but a VCR or TV tuner
is ok.

Ian, without testing the drive with a format program such as Le Cie's
Silverlining or better (while they last :-( FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit, it's
hard to be sure what's happening here.

But: there _has_ been a discrepancy between Disk Doctor's bad block test
and Speed Disk. Earlier versions of Disk Doctor didn't check blocks at
all. Earlier versions (like 2.x) of Speed Disk which didn't check so well
themselves could get half way through optimizing a disk with undetected bad
blocks and then throw up their (metaphorical) hands with a dialog to the
effect that the drive was faulty, the optimizing couldn't continue and
you'd better contact Symantec's technical help!!

I know myself from problems with Syquest cartridges that Disk Doctor will
pass as having no bad blocks a cartridge on which the more exhaustive HDT
Test routines will experience both read and write errors, and reject and
map out blocks. HDT's complete suite of tests can take hours, the Doctor's
test takes seconds. But then, the Doctor isn't doing extended reads and
writes, it's just checking that the basic logic of each block is OK, which
is quite a different thing.

Speed Disk however _is_ reading and writing quite a large percentage of the
blocks on a drive, especially if the drive is over (say) 60% utilized.
It's good that now Speed Disk's own pre-testing of blocks is reasonably
adequate, and we _want_ it to do a better job in such testing than Disk
Doctor. Though it would be nice if the Doctor could do a better test than
it does now at the same speed...

1) So, no, Disk Doctor isn't corrupted, at least not in all probability.

2) And yes, you should re-format your drive. (Well, as you say, you were
going to be doing this for 7.5.3 anyway, which is a Good Thing, and well
worth it!) And I would do this as soon as possible if I were you, backing
up any work you do beforehand to removeable media even more often than you
do now.

But more than either of these points I think you should change your format
program. MacWeek 13/6 notes that FWB have just sold off their drive
business (hence my growlie above), so the future of HDT must be a bit...
ah... occluded. But it does have the best bunch of tests. You'd want
v.1.8s, or if you go to Silverlining you want 5.6.4. Both of these are
fully 7.5.3 compliant, and both test and re-map bad blocks nicely. I'd say
the villain at back of all this is your present format program, it has
certainly done a less than wonderful job of remapping, and left problems
which are now surfacing, if the evidence you've got from Speed Disk is to
be trusted... and I think it might be.

Of course, it may be that the HD itself is beginning to fail (I hope it
isn't!), in which case I shouldn't be blaming your current formatter, and
all bets are off... Either way, after Speed Disk's warning, you do want to
test the drive thoroughly as you reformat. It's possible of course that
you won't get any block errors at all, and that Speed Disk was just being a
bit... neurotic. Lot's of things can affect a drive's performance, the
other devices on the SCSI chain for instance (always test with everything
else disconnected); and even the contacts on the power cable to the
internal drive, and its own SCSI cable.

Sorry for the length, hope this helps...

Subject: Bad things happening! :(

G'day....

After about 3 yrs of faithful 2nd hand service, my trusty LCII (Performa
400) is playing up. About 2 yrs ago I put in a Quantum 270MB hard
drive....this is what's happened:

- System file appears corrupted, cant open (error -127) BTW it's sys 7.1.
- Reinstalled system file. No probs, but now some other progs won't open
with that error -127! Includes Norton - D'oh!
- Reinstalled Norton. Ran Disinfectant. It doesn't find virii but tells
me many files have damaged resource forks.
- Started up and ran Norton Disk Doctor off a floppy. It fixes some
b-tree node probs, but then the big one - "A header node in the extents
b-tree has incorrect depth." Huh? Norton tells me to backup and reformat
the hard drive. Realise it will take 25 boxes of floppies to backup. D'oh
again.
- System crashes on startup - "F-line error in Quicktime." I don't load
quicktime so why did this happen?
- Restart mac - get the flashing "?" instead of happy mac. Grrrrr.
- Startup from floppy, bloody system file is corrupted again. Reinstall
system file. Startup is OK but all icons are now generic. Wonder if I'm
actually running Win95 here.
- Beg for lend of zip drive to backup my HD for reformatting. Can't do
anything for another week, till after exams.

Does anyone have ANY idea what the problem might be? Is it hard- or
software? I would hate to reformat the drive then restore the data to
find it's still all stuffed. Please reply soon - thanks!

Subject: classic arcade games on current Macs?

I am a huge fan of Arkanoid by Taito and also the original
Atari 2600 games (Space Invaders, River Raid, etc.) and would
very much like to play them on my 68K Mac.

I own a copy of Arkanoid which ran fine on my 512Ke, but refuses to run
these days. Something about not being able to allocate enough handles,
blocks, or something. Does anyone know where to find a newer version of
this great game or how to hack at the one I have to make it work? I've
tried some Arkanoid clones and none of them seem to cut the mustard. I'm
willing to try some others, but I *really* want Arkanoid.

As far as Atari 2600 games are concerned, I have seen an Atari Game pack,
Vol. II for the Macintosh, but can't seem to find Volume I. Does anyone
know where I can get it? Volume I is the one that has the good games,
Volume II was a poor sequel. Any ideas?

Do you have call waiting? If not, its interrupt beep on incoming calls
might do the trick. Still...you *know* you're gonna add that second phone
line sooner or later. Why not sooner? :-)

Hi,

I think "Serial of Champions" might be what you look after! It is only at
the MacUser site and was the utility of the month some time ago! You should
find it here! It is sepoused to look after the speed and througoutput, I
think!

Subject: no sound on Performa 575

I have a performa 575 that suddenly after unplugging and starting back up
has no sound.
I have checked everything and can find no problem except that my MAC TCP
resource fork is damaged.
The start up chime does not even sound nor does the beep come on when
hitting the mouse after screen saver darkens screen.

Any help?

Subject: Stuck on Fax

I have experienced not reverting to Print after sending a Fax (using Option
key) necessitating using the Chooser to select a printer. This happened
since I installed 7.5.3 on my Quadra 800, but may be coincidental. I use GV
Teleport Platinum and HP Deskwriter 550C. Any suggestions? Is that enough
info to go on?

Thanks for any help.

=46irst, open the Memory control panel, turn off "Modern Memory Manager",=
and restart your Mac. If that doesn't fix the problem, try turning off=
"Virtual Memory" and restart. Some programs have problems with these optio=
ns.

Second, get FreePPP 2.5. It's a big improvement over your version.

Third, do you really have "System 7.5.3 Revision 2", or do you mean "System=
7.5 Update 2.0"? If you don't have Revision 2, get it.

"System 7.5 Update 2.0" updates System 7.5, 7.5.1, or 7.5.2 to "System=
7.5.3". It is available on various ftp sites, and is also available on CD-=
ROM.

"System 7.5.3 Revision 2" is a revision of 7.5.3 which fixes some problems=
in System 7.5.3 on certain Macs, including the PM 7200. It was released=
about a week ago, but I haven't heard anything about it being available on=
CD-ROM (yet). It's "only" a couple of megabytes, so it's not too bad to do=
wnload.
