Keywords: AMBROSIA ARCADE ACTION BARRACK DISCRETION SHOOTER
Barrack Discretion allows you permanently change two sounds in Barrack
that some may find objectionable or not suitable for children. The two
sounds are: "Oh My God" and "Shiiiiii". NOTE: This program will
permanently change these sounds, so you may want to back up the "Barrack
Sounds" file first, in case you ever wish to go back to the old sounds.

As far as paying for Drop Formatter goes, don't

ii) can be registered with netscape ( and internet explorer?) for the

iii) has the ability to handle multiple mail settings (e.g. for shared

I wrote it for because I needed it, but then people started asking for it...
It does take a few steps to setup, but that's in the read me.

Subject: [*] Mac CallerID 1.1.3a
Uploaded at the request of the author, Lee Cohen. This version of
MacCallID 1.1.3a fixes some minor bugs with the Pageme function.
MacCaller IDc 1.1.3a By Lee Cohen
Mac CallerIDc is a shareware application that will display and
store specific information provided by your local telephone
company. You must subscribe to your local telephone company's
"caller information and identification service," commonly known
as Caller ID. This application is similar to the Caller ID
boxes available in many stores, but is available at a fraction
of the cost. A lot of work went into the application, and
hopefully you will agree that it is worth the nominal fee or
more.
The caller's name, number, date and time can be displayed as
a single call or in a list of all calls. Mac CallerID should
work in the United States, Canada and Sweden.
Mac CallerIDc REQUIRES THAT YOU ARE IN AN AREA WHERE CALLER ID
IS AVAILABLE, YOU ARE A SUBSCRIBER AND HAVE A MODEM THAT
SUPPORTS CALLER ID.
What is Caller ID?
Caller ID is a way for you to determine who is calling before
you answer the phone. Between the first and second rings,
the phone company sends information about who is calling.
Not all the information is always available, many times the
call might have originated from an area that does not support
Caller ID. At other times the call may be blocked by the
calling party.
REQUIREMENTS
* Desktop Macintosh
* System 7 or greater
* Modem with Caller ID support
* Caller ID service must be provided by your local telephone
company and you must subscribe to the service.

Subject: [*] Quote Of The Moment
Quote Of The Moment v.10 is an application that stores and displays
your favorite quotes, sayings and bits of wisdom. When opened, it
randomly displays a quote on file. Any quote on file can be accessed
by searching the file either by the author's name or by a word or
phrase. The user is able to display, find, add, delete or copy quotes
to the clipboard (for pasting or printing in the user's documents).
QOTM version 1.0 is available with over 300 quotes but the purpose of
the design is for the user to enter and customize the quote file with
interesting quotes of their own.
Quote Of The Moment was written with the Applescript language (which
comes packaged with Mac OS system 7.5) and requires Applescript to be
installed properly on the user's computer to run. It was written on a
Mac Performa 6200 but it is assumed that any machine that has
Applescript installed will run QOTM.
Quote Of The Moment is shareware and costs $5.00.

Subject: [*] SING! v1.1
SING! is an application which allows you to use the voices of the
Speech Manager to "sing" according to your choice of words, pitch, and
note duration. It automates the laborious procedure necessary when
specifying pitch and rate for each word to be sung. Also, successive
calls to the Speech Manager (necessary due to the apparent 30 [[pbas]]
limit per call) are arranged in such a way as to minimize interruption
of song.
Version 1.1 offers substantial improvement over version 1.0 in the way
associated files are handled.
SING! requires system software 7.1 or later, a 68030 processor or faster,
and the Speech Manager extension must be present in the Extensions
Folder. Use of Speech Manager version 1.4, Macintalk 3, and associated
voices is highly recommended.
Macintalk 2 and its voices (Boris, Marvin, etc.) and Macintalk Pro and
its voices (Bruce, Victoria, Agnes) are NOT supported. If the
following voices (among others) are available to "SimpleText", then it
is likely that a compatible version of the Speech Manager is
installed: Kathy; Junior; Princess; Ralph; Zarvox
SING!v1.1 requires at least 2 MB RAM to run on a 68030- or 68040- based
computer, and at least 3 MB RAM to run on a PPC. A PPC-only version is
available by request.
SING!v1.1 may be included in official CD compilations drawn from
INFO-MAC and UMICH archives. Permission is granted for its use in
other compilations as long as the program is unaltered, the ReadMe
document and sample songs are included, and the author is contacted
first.

Subject: [*] Spinning Globe Animated GIF (30 frames/sec)
This is my first attempt at creating an animated GIF. I wanted it to be a
good quality one, so I brought out my XEarth program, and painstakingly saved
every frame of a rotating image, then brought it up in GifBuilder.
OK, it's 557k, that's true. But how many animated GIFs do you see that are
248 frames at 30 frames/sec, for 7.5 seconds? ;-} If anyone can tell me how
to compress this further, please do. To my knowledge, nobody else has taken
this quite so far. I think it's pretty cool.
It's not perfect. I think I may have skipped a frame as North America was
fading to the dark side. And I can't get Netscape to go through the frames at
a set speed, instead of as fast as it can.
It took a while to save all the frames, but it's easier than I thought. If
you like this image, feel free to use it, as long as you send me an E-Mail
with your URL.

happen at night or at any preset time, once or peridically, without
anyone present.
Synchronize! is a great way to keep your work-in-process backed up on
a second hard drive or a removable drive. Set it to copy those
important files at lunch, or the end of the day, and you're always
safe from a hard disk failure. Synchronize! is quick, too, because it
copies only the files which have changed.
Features include:
> Accelerated for Power Mac.
> Apple Guide - step by step instructions (System 7.5 only)
> Drag and drop - set folders by dragging from the desktop (System 7.5 only)
> Hierarchical display of files to be copied, like the Finder
> Selection of files or folders, by full or partial file name,
file type, creator, and label.
> Easy one-way backup, with deletion of old files
> Copy AutoDoubler files without expanding them
> Conflict checking

Subject: (Q) Can one disable auto-connect in FreePPP 2.5?
System stats: PowerMac 7500, System 7.5.3 rev.2, Open Transport 1.1, FreePPP

Following the advice in several Mac columns, I unchecked "load only when
needed" in TCP/IP control panel to avoid an identified memory fragmentation
problem. Now, however, FreePPP initiates a connection automatically each
time the system boots up. To counteract this, the Mac advice columns suggest
activating the "Disable auto connect" option in the ConfigPPP control panel.
My problem is that I don't recognize an equivalent option in the FreePPP
Setup display panels. Can someone direct me to the appropriate display if
FreePPP does have this option?
Thank you!

Subject: (R) Mac info database? (Q) HyperArchive format change?
Does anyone know the location of a databse (or hypercard stack) once seen
which featured black-and-white drawings of the boards of many older Macs? I
seem to recall that the DB (or stack) was from Apple, and featured text
info as well.
On another topic, the HyperArchive mirror of info-mac seems to have
reformatted, delivering the formerly convenient "Abstracts" as hqx'ed files
with the inconvenient final text extension of ".abs". Is it me? or did this
happen? And can we beg them to go back to the good, kind, easy, hypertext

OTO, perhaps something has slipped by me. Will those in the know kindly

Subject: Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia - want to change voice
I have a question about the voice used to speak portions of the
Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia for Macintosh, version 2.02 VWF.
I am using a Macintosh Performa 475 with System 7.1P3, 20MB of RAM,
and a CD-ROM drive. I have Apple's English Text-to-Speech version 1.4
installed.
When we click on the icon to speak text in the Encyclopedia, we hear
what I think is the "Bubbles" voice, which is not too appealing.
Changing voice settings in Apples' TTS Speech control panel doesn't
change the voice in the Encyclopedia.
Is there a control panel or preferences setting, or some other method we
can use to change the Encyclopedia's voice, for example, to "Junior"?
Does anyone know CIE's current phone? The number I have, (619) 929-2626
has been disconnected. Have they moved? What is they're current FAX?

Subject: Docs
This is not a flame, not even a beef, but can someone tell me why software
developers insist upon telling us about all the changes and repairs they
have made to a given piece of software? I just downloaded a spellchecker
which had 10 pages of legitimate instructions, and 10 additional pages
listing the history of the program. I prefer to print docs rather than
stare at the screen, and those 10 extra pages just used up paper and time
for me. I suppose some do it to prove how much work has gone into
developing it, altho I doubt that that is the normal incentive. Other
developers might enjoy reading that material, but not the average person
who just wants to know how to use it.
There, I got that off my chest!

Subject: HELP: Who's lying about accelerators?
Anyone know what's up?
I recently bought a DVC Equalizer (a daughtercard accelerator for 604
processor). Since it says it works with Power Mac 9500's and I've always
been told Power Computing gets its hardware from the same source Apple
does, I figured the accelerator would work with my PowerWave 132. Wouldn't
you think so?
Wrong Answer!!!
The DVC Equalizer uses four little forks on the back of the 604
daughtercard to attach and make its modifications. Power Computing has
suspiciously decided to remove these forks.
According to DVC tech support, it's so people will not be able to buy
inexpensive upgrades to their processors. According to PPC, it's so people
won't fry their daughter cards. They claim something to the effect of
"Apple has seen this happen repeatedly."
Now I'm wondering why no one ever talks about these processor accelerators
in any of the trade mags (MacWeek, MacUser, MacWorld, etc.). Are they
really damaging or is this really just a bunch of hooey?
Any insight?
TIA!

Where did you think the trichlorotrifluoroethane went then? It'll get into
the atmosphere eventually.
I really hope you can't get hold of carbon tetrachloride, but if you have
any please don't use it for cleaning anything. It is highly toxic by
inhalation, ingestion or skin contact and is also carcinogenic.

My can had almost run out, it just dribbled into the key contact at
best, it wasn't really the burst I had hoped for. Radio Shack has a new
version can refill to a very small nozzle and costs alot. I caught the last
dribbles from my can and it didn't work. Then I simply had to wrench the
key about a little.

Subject: How to secure a mac ?
Hello
I am hoping that there is an easy solution to a problem I have been
asked to solve. Is there anyway that I can prohibit the installation, or
running of IRC clients/servers on a Power Macintosh ? The target system is a
Power Macintosh 8500/120 with OT. The System Software is 7.5.3, System 7.5
Update 2.0.
By the end of this week I need to be able to prevent users from
using these machines for IRC purposes. Is there an available machine
configuration/disablement option or maybe a third-party software solution
to this problem ? I would also appreciate a pointer to any applicable FAQ
or online resources as well.
My thanks

Jaz is fast and reliable. You don't find it in the U.S.? I bought it in
Italy, I find it in shop windows in France. I paid it something more than $
599, anyway (say 20% more). It's exactly as for Zip drives at the
beginning: many advertise them, but when you order them you wait months. I
have two Jaz cartridges, I needed some more, somebody in the shop told me
"call me on monday, I know how to get them". Maybe it's not serious, anyway
Jaz works really fine, even if it's really noisy (and hot: useful in winter

Any of you more-experienced Netscapers have a clue on this one?
I had working copy of Netscape, then one day it wouldn't display images

re-enter my email address and mail server manually, but that seemed
easy enough. Then, first download, I get told that Stuffit Expander
"cannot open the file" / do I wanna ditch it or save it in its present

into Netscape associated files prefs, click Browse, navigate to Ex-

this day I'm having to manually drag downloaded files to Stuffit Ex-

Subject: Novell, NT and Macs
I work in company that is PC's--the only Macs belong to the Desktop
publisher and me--not enough money to "buy you a real machine" (no flames
please). As the resident Mac God (hey, everything is relative, isn't it?),
I have been asked the for the following information:
My head office has a small LAN (8 stations) of PC's using Novell 3.12. They
wish to expand this to about 15 or 20 PC's, and possibly into a WAN with
some the branches in the city (again all PC's). When we go to the WAN,
there will need to be remote control by the system administrator. There
will be two Macs that need to be connected to this setup. One will be in
the office, and the other will be in one of the branches. The head office
Mac will need to be connected to share files (she has her own printer) and
for backup procedures.
What is Novell 3.12 like for this type of setup (initially, just the
LAN)?
What is the advantage to upgrading to Novell 4.0?
What is NT like with this environment? (only asked because in about 4
years time, will likely be purchasing a software application
environment
that requires NT--should we move now, or wait?).
I currently use Personal MacLAN at my office to connect to a Windows for
Workgroups network. I like it. Does the job nicely, and didn't cost an arm
and a leg.
Thank you once again for your collective wisdom and experience.

REGARDING PRAM and System memory use
Hi Info-Mac-ers,
Here is a summary of a memory problem I had recently. Relevant to my
experience is this posting from a few months ago. Basically, some software
installations made the CPU speed go from 33MHz to 6 MHz. Zapping the PRAM
fixed it.

=======
OK here is my experience:
Computer: PowerMac 7100/66, 24 megs RAM
System 7.5.3 from System 7.5 plus the Update 2.0 (all on floppies)
When booted with Apple-only extensions, the system uses 13 megs of RAM!!!
When booted with extensions off (from extensions manager) the system uses 11.5
megs.
When booted with extensions off (shift key at startup) the system uses 2.5
megs.
Question 1: Why the difference, and why does Extensions Manager not show *all*
extensions in the extensions folder?
Let's try another system folder:
When booted from the System 7.5 Disk tools disk or the CD system, the system
uses 7 megs unless booted with the shift key down, then it is 1.5 megs.
So this is a hardware problem, not a system issue; I can't imagine how you
could get a 7 meg system from a 1.4 meg floppy.
Zap the PRAM ---> boot from the original 7.5.3 system that had been 13 megs
--> the system is now 8 megs with every extension running.
This problem may be related to starting/stopping Virtual Memory. It happened
on my PowerBook 520c also.
Question 2: Why does this happen?
Hope this helps you if you have a problem with a *huge* system.

The ProMax is the same except for the following differences:
(1) It has 2 50-pin Centronics connectors instead of the special
micro SCSI-2 connectors. The standard Centronics connectors can save you a
lot of money if you have other devices in your SCSI chain, because then
you'd have to by additional, expensive cables.
(2) It has a fan, and a metal case, which make give it higher
reliability and durability.
(2) It doesn't have the automatic active termination.
I almost bought a Promax for $545 (there was a $50 rebate), but I
choose the original Jaz because I thought that the lighter weight and
slightly smaller size would be an assez in bringing the drive to Europe.
I've had my Jaz for 6 weeks and it has worked perfectly. Any risks

Subject: termination (Q)
Dear Digest Reader,
I just read something rather disturbing in Apple's "Technical
Information Specificications for Power Macintosh 7200 series computers".
"IMPORTANT The factory-installed internal hard disk is terminated. If
another SCSI device is attached to the SCSI interface, it must
*not* [emphasis added] be terminated. The SCSI interface can contain
only *one* [emphasis added] terminated device; if you attach more than
one terminated device to the the internal SCSI interface, damage to the
computer's main logic board can occur."
OK, now anyone care to shed some light on this?
Does this mean that any internal hard disks, CD-ROMs drives other than
the one that was factory installed can not have their own internal
termination?
Does this mean that external SCSI devices should have their internal
termination turned off, if they have internal termination built in? A
lot of external APS drives now have an internal termination switch.
Should this be left on or off, if the drive is at the other end of the
chain?
I certainly don't want to damage my main logic board because of only one
terminated device being allowed on the SCSI interface, that being my
factory installed drive.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

I own a Newer Tech Power Clip. In my 6100/DOS the processor fan mounts on
the rear of the hard drive and blows across BOTH processors, the 486 and
the 601. Power to the fan is swiped from the hard drive power cable with an
extension from Newer. Hope that helps. Oh, I had to install the fan back
about a centimeter from where the instructions placed it because of the DOS
card.

Not EXACTLY the same, but try to use WindowShade, built into System 7.5.
This hides everything from a window with the exception of the title bar.
Look in the control panels and configure it according to your require-

The closest thing I've seen is Malph (or one of the other, similar apps),
which will bring an application to the front when its icon is clicked,
the same as if you'd selected it from the Application menu. This also
works if you've hidden the app by option-clicking on another app's
window, or on the desktop. However, the application and all of its open
document windows are treated as a group.
