Subject: [*] Acid Jazz Address Book
Acid Jazz Address Book is a FileMaker Pro contact database featuring
automated telephone dialing.
The database format supports up to six telephone/account numbers and
two e-mail addresses for each record. AJAB also utilizes the Acid
Jazz phone dialer (available separately at Info-Mac as shareware)
with your modem to automatically dial your phone. It's a short
download with a slick interface. Check it out if you have FileMaker
Pro!
Version 1.5: AJAB now defaults to Find mode when launched.
System requirements:
* Macintosh (modem optional)
* Filemaker Pro 2.x or later
* Acid Jazz Dialer Shareware (available on Info-Mac)
For more information, please read the Read Me file enclosed.

Subject: [*] CD Manager 2.0
CD Manager is a FileMaker Pro 3.0 template designed to track and summarize
a CD collection. In its earliest incantations, it existed as a Hypercard
2.1 stack (which, if anyone is interested, I would gladly let them take a
look at). However, as my CD collection grew, the limitations of HyperCard
quickly became apparent. It was taking hours (well, OK, not quite; but
many many many seconds!) to do any meaningful summarizing of my
collection. And HyperCard's reporting capabilities could be best
described as "nearly non-existent." So I went in search of alternate
solutions to my problem...
Over two years ago, I began to convert my HyperCard stack into a FileMaker
Pro database. What started as a simple little project evolved (of course)
into something much more robust. After many hours of development time, CD
Manager has become a very thorough data collection and reporting tool,
which just happens to be applied to a compact disc collection. With
minimal work, it could just as easily be used to track other
"inventoriable" items.
Version 2.0 is now current, and requires FileMaker Pro 3.0 to run. Some
day, I may invest in the runtime development kit ... but until I do, FM
Pro 3.0 will be required. Additionally, the Espy Sans font (9 point size)
is used extensively in the input screens.

Subject: [*] FTP Decoder
This is a drag and drop program that will decode either Base64 (MIME) or
UU encoded messages. Just drop the files onto the application and it will
determine the correct encoding scheme and decode accordingly.
Requires: System 7, PowerPC or 68020 machine.
The highlights...
It can handle files of any size, yet still has low memory requirements.
It is faster that other similar programs.
File segments do not have to be concatenated prior to decoding.
Handles "imperfect" files better than any other UU or Base 64 decoder.
Handles multi-part files.
Automatically sets file type and creator upon decoding.
Can open decoded files automatically if desired.
Handles files that have been concatenated by a newsreader.
I am sure you will find the Decoder to be the easiest-to-use, fastest,
most robust UU and Base64 decoder available.

Subject: [*] Sleeper 2.1 - sleep mode for all Macs
Sleeper is a shareware control panel for desktop Macintoshes and Power
Macintoshes that dims the screen, powers down Energy Star compliant
monitors, and spins down disk drives after periods of inactivity. This
saves energy and reduces noise levels in your work area without forcing you
to shut down your Mac.
Because Sleeper does not rely on Apple's Power Manager, Sleeper will work
on any Macintosh running System 7.0 or later, and does not suffer from some
of the quirky behavior reported with Apple's Energy Saver 2.0. Sleeper is
well suited for unattended operations as well as personal desktop use. For
file servers, ftp and http hosts, and fax and BBS systems, Sleeper will
wake the drives up when they are needed and put them to sleep when they are
idle. Sleeper is easily configurable; it provides hotkey control for
on-demand activation of its sleep features, and separate delay settings for
screen dimming, monitor power down, and disk sleep.
In addition to fixing some minor incompatibilities, version 2.1 adds the
following features:
- Sleeper now flushes the on-board cache on SCSI disks as well as the
MacOS volume buffers. This avoids possible corruption on drives with
write-caching, like the Quantum Fireball.
- Cursors now indicate when hot corners are active, and warn you when
the screen is about to dim.
- A "Don't wake up for mouse movement" option has been added for the
screen saver.
- Energy Star power down can now use either suspend mode, off mode,
or a sequence of the two.
- An "Only when dimmed" option was added for Energy Star activation.
- Sleeper Now, a control strip module to activate sleep, is now included.
- You can now click on the URL at the bottom of the control panel and
go to the St. Clair Software web site if you have Internet Config
installed.
Sleeper will work on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher, including
System 7.5.5, and will spin down both IDE and SCSI hard drives. The screen
saver feature requires a color-capable Macintosh, and Energy Star monitor
support requires an Energy Star compliant Macintosh (any Mac on which
Apple's Energy Saver control panel works) and an Energy Star capable
monitor. Sleeper supports SCSI Manager 4.3 in native mode on all machines
and requires only 26K of memory when operating.
In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are
available at:
Sleeper may be included on the Info-Mac and UMich CD-ROMs.

Subject: [*] Text2Rsrc Plugin Compiler for CodeWarrior
A common problem for the programmer is that of including styled
text into resources. ResEdit provides a nice editor for
manipulating "TEXT" and "styl" resources but otherwise is not a
great text editor. Apple (and just about every CD-ROM supplier)
supply SimpleText which is a reasonable (read: cheap) styled text
editor, but does not save in resource format.
This plugin-compiler for CodeWarrior simplifies the creation of
styled TEXT resources by allowing the user to edit their text in
standard SimpleText source files (with extension .text) and the
compiler will incorporate them as "TEXT/styl" resources. In fact,
the plugin will also process text files created by CodeWarrior
itself and will incorporate the font information defined in the
preferences panel as style information for the entire file.

Tell me if this isn't easier:
-open the folder. Choose a list view (like "View by name").
-highlight the files you want, or cmd-a for all.
-cmd-c to copy
-paste into a text file.
Want a recursive listing? get BBEdit Lite 3.5. It's free (and it
doesn't suck!) I believe it has an "insert folder listing" option,
probably under the edit menu (that's where it is in the commercial
version, 4.0, which I use).
Hope this helps-

Try the program "The Medieval Period", recently submitted to the archives.
[Archived as /info-mac/disk/medieval-period.hqx; 155K] It will create a

When using Apple script, there is a way to open files/applications
although the relevant application doesn't recognize apple events. One
could write:
tell application "Finder"
open "appname" of folder "foldername"
end tell
However, trying the analoguous thing for close/quit doesn't seem to
work.
My question: is there a way to close/quit an application via Apple

Hi all.
A friend of mine want to buy a cheap computer. He does not want
a PPC, only something that will let him use the internet for mostly
e-mail. This is a PC fan, so we have a chance to make a good impression
with a good Mac.
I think that the performa 63X series is a good choice for him, but they seem
to have banished off the face of the earth. He will also consider a Mac II
or a Centris if it is souped up with RAM. Ideally, he would like to buy from
a dealer with some sort of warranty.
Any suggestions???
Thanks all.

Perhaps the problem is a bit more complex than that. I still use Copy 4.2
to reproduce 800K disks with no problem (System 7.5.5, 68030).
Sometimes I do find bad disks, usually the "target" disk. Sometimes,
the bad disk can be re-formatted and then used with Copy 4.2.
I had not thought of bad disks as a 4.2 problem, since it happens with
ShrinkWrap as well.
Is it really possible that a disk can be so corrupted by a copy program
that it can never be re-formatted, or is it more likely that the disk was
physically bad to start with?

This is complete news to me. I've used DiskCopy 4.2 under System 7 and
above on a wide variety of Macs to duplicate literally hundreds of 800K
floppies. In fact, I just duped one now under 7.5.5 on my 6115 without any
problems.

I have nothing against Floppier, but in general I prefer ShrinkWrap. It
can read, mount, convert between and write to disk any disk image format
you're likely to come upon.

Subject: Icon Windows etc..
Dear Digest readers,
I've gotten into the habit of looking at some of the various interface
"enhancers." Church Windows 2.0 is nice, except it misses the point of
iconizing windows in operating systems that actually do iconize windows.
It would be nice to
iconize my windows while still using Church Windows various wdefs.
Another thing I'd like to do is have the SGI's ability to determine if a
folder is open or closed by showing a different icon for a closed folder
and an open folder. I got a wonderful 3-d icon of a folder that is
actually open and would like to use this to show the open folder.
Yes, I know how to add things through ResEdit, just haven't found the open
folder icon resource. I take it there is none, but it would be nice if
someone could hack one up.
Now if I could have all of this with Aaron's 3-d status bars, radio
buttons, icons, and still have a stable system that would be something. I
have tried Icon Windows, but it takes away the titlebar of the enhanced
Church Windows.
Anybody found a stable combination of INITs that would give this in System
7.5.5?
Thank you.

Max, without being boring about the technical details (:-) it means the
drive directory is bad at that directory address. And it's another case of
always test with DFA first, and don't necessarily trust Norton.
Get things backed up quickly now, before any data gets clobbered.
And you will have to format, or at the least initialize the HD. To do that
you'll need your copy of Drive Setup 1.0.5 or better, Hard Disk Toolkit
2.0.1.
It's just not worth trying to fix!

Subject: Lost internal Drive in Performa 5200
I have a Performa 5200 with 8 Mb RAM and a 850 Mb internal IDE drive. This
IDE drive has four equal partitions (Drive Setup 1.0.5), the first of them
is the usual startup disk. The last two partitions are usually hidden
(Drive Setup 1.0.5) because I still do not need them. I also have an
external box with some SCSI disks, two of them with System Folder.
My problems started when I decided to put Virtual Memory in an external
disk. First, the hidden partitions of the internal disk started to show up.
Then, the internal disk stopped starting up at all (it does not show up in
the desktop), and the computer starts with the SCSI disk that is designated
to contain the virtual memory. This is really very strange because the
system folder in this SCSI disk is not "blessed" (I mean, it does not show
the normal system icon in the folder) and it does not work as a startup
disk if it is designated as such in the Startup Disk control panel.
Everything seems to be back to normal if I change the Virtual Memory back
to the internal IDE drive.
I realize that there is the possibility that there is an hardware problem
with the internal disk, but I would like to know if someone has come across
something similar.
Best regards

Giovanni, 7.0.1! brings back memories. I hope you've been running a
version patched with the 3rd "Tuner", Tune Up 1.1.1! as w/o this there are
some real bugs in 7.0.X. The "vanishing folder" bug comes to mind...
Another memory is of the font management. No Font folder: all the fonts,
bit mapped and TrueType alike, being in the System file.
And thus, on the "rip out the logic board" principle of software
maintenance, I think you'd better re-install the 7.0.1 system from the
original disks. Do this as a clean install remove the Finder from your
existing System Folder, and rename the folder itself Old.System or
something of the kind. Now install the system again. When that is
finished, install the 1.1.1 version of the tuner, copy over 3rd party
extensions, then trash the old sys folder.
Any 3rd party fonts you use can now be reinstalled from master disk too.

Subject: Q: disabling java initialization in Netscape 3
Here's a question for y'all. I like Netscape; I'd like to be able to use
Netscape 3.x, but the "custom installer" which is supposed to let me *not*
install Java if I so choose, well, she lies. The custom installer goes
ahead and istalls Java, and configures the app to have Java and, worse
yet, Javascript (is there *any* good use for the little crawlies?) enabled
by default.
This is fine, I go to the Preferences folder, drop the Java folder in the
trash, and go on my way. But, on launch, I find that Netscape wants to
initialize Java, and whines about my not having let it do so.
I'm fine with that, but there are people in the lab who may find it
disturbing that Netscape is requesting Java. Also, my impression is that
if I could really, truly disable Java, the application might handle memory
more efficiently than it does now.
As to why I'm upgrading, I'm lately finding that Netscape 2.01 can only be
launched once per startup cycle on both the machine here at lab (Powermac
7200) and at home (Quadra 630.) I don't know why exactly this behavior is
occurring, but if I launch, quit, and relaunch N 2.01, I find the machines
to lock really severely - no ADB input (keyboard, mouse) is recognized,
time to go trip the power switch.... Is this a time bomb the boyz at
Netscape put onboard to make the s/w obsolete?
happening, so I've needed to downgrade (and I do mean downgrade) to either
3.0 or start using MSIE for something besides viewing AVI files. And as
that latter ain't gonna happen,
I'd like to know if anyone's figured out how to get the custom installer
to work properly, or if anyone has a ResEdit hack that will persuade N 3
to stop initializing Java, in spite of its prefs.
Thanks,
Peter

I have had no trouble copying either 800K or 400K (remember them?) or 1.4M
