Demon Growl System Alert Beep
(16-bit Version)
The Demon Growl Alert is a sound file that can be used as a system beep on
any Macintosh computer. It is a short, 2 second sound that is a deep,
rolling growl of what sounds like a demon or creature of some sort in
stereo.
This file is available in both 16-bit/44.1kHz and 8-bit/22kHz versions, and
either can be downloaded here or at the Clixsounds web site at:

Subject: [*] Fresnel Diffraction Explorer PPC 1.0.1
This is version 1.0.1 of a previously submitted program. Subj: Fresnel
Diffraction on Macintosh Date: October 7, 1996 Keywords: Science,
Education, Optics, Diffraction, Fresnel
Abs: This archive contains version 1.0.1 of the Fresnel Diffraction
Explorer, an educational and scientific program that simulates Fresnel
diffraction patterns for any arbitrary two-dimensional aperture. PPC
Native. See for more info and 68k
version.
Desc: What is Fresnel diffraction? Diffraction is a phenomena arising from
the wave nature of light. Fresnel diffraction occurs when a point source
radiates light in spherical waves, diffracts by an object, and projects a
diffraction pattern instead of a shadow. For example, the diffraction
pattern behind any circular object, whether it is a BB or a bowling ball,
yields a bright spot (!) in the exact center of where the shadow would be.
(See my web site, below.)
Why write the Fresnel Diffraction Explorer? The most common type of
diffraction taught in schools and colleges is Fraunhofer diffraction (which
uses plane waves), partially because the computations to predict its
effects are relatively easy (just a Fourier transform). But Fresnel
diffraction has traditionally been very difficult to predict. While I was
an undergraduate in physics at Harvey Mudd College, I created an algorithm
to solve that problem, a problem I later learned was of significant
interest in physics. I wrote a paper to be published in _Computers In
Physics_ in the Nov/Dec 1996 issue,
and this is a program that produces the results.
You can download a copy of it (both 68k+FPU and PowerPC versions) and see
demonstrations of its output at:
The program has a number of
built-in apertures and allows you to import any black and white PICT as an
aperture.
For non-profit, educational, and scientific users, this software is
Postcard-ware: send me a postcard of your home town to register (check the
about box for where), and that's it. I'm not asking for money; I just want
to get an idea of how far this propagates. And, of course, email me any

Subject: [*] ramBunctious 1.1.1 -- a RAM disk program
ramBunctious 1.1.1 is a maintenance update. Changes include: - The delete
keys now work in the "Choose RAM disk size" dialog. - A conflict with
Directory Assistant was identified. - Put Away menu item was added to the
File menu.
ramBunctious is a RAM disk program for the Macintosh.
RAM disks are a convenient way to achieve high performance in many
applications. Hard drive accesses are hundreds of times slower than memory
accesses. RAM disks set aside an amount of memory that the system can then
use as a "normal" hard drive, floppy drive, or any other storage device --
except that they're much faster.
ramBunctious maintains the advantages and eliminates the disadvantages of
most RAM disk programs. Several options let you customize for your desired
balance of speed, security, safety, and versatility. For example, you can
set it to write through to a file on a (real) disk for safety in the event
of a crash. You can mount as many RAM disks as you wish (or as many as you
have memory for) simultaneously. ramBunctious uses the same memory that
applications use, so the memory used for each RAM disk is instantly
available for other applications as soon as the RAM disk is put away.
A full description of ramBunctious is available by running the
"ramBunctious manual" document included in this package, or visit the
ramBunctious home page:

You don't need any extra utilities for this, there is a method
for creating a txt file of the contents of a folder built in to

1) Open the folder
2) choose Select All from the edit menu (command-A)
3) choose Copy from the edit menu (command-C)
4) then paste into your favorite text editor (command-V).
When you have files selected in the Finder and you Copy, the names

The only competition to Exodus I was able to find was Xoftware from

Unfortunately, both products are a bit pricey . . . $200+ and, on top of the

Thanks to all who wrote me concerning my Appleworks to Clarisworks
conversion snafu. I have found an answer to my original question, which
was, how could I transfer files between Appleworks 2.0 WP and Clarisworks
4.0. Simply pulling them in via the direct Clarisworks Appleworks
translator did not work for me, despite my getting a lot of mail saying
this worked for most folks. Pulling in the files directly through the
Clarisworks Appleworks translator yielded me nothing but files full of
garbled, garbage characters--totally unusable files.
What I found out (by trial and error) that I have to do is this: open the
file through MacLink Plus Translator program FIRST. When it askes you what
program to open the file with, you click on "Clarisworks with MacLink Plus
Translation." Then the MLP translator window opens, and it immediately
knows that it is an AW 2.0 WP file. After the translator is finished, it
dumps you into Clarisworks, where you see your file in perfect condition
with no garbage characters!!

Subject: daylight savings time?
Hey, what happened?
My wife went around changing all the clocks last night. I told her not to
bother with the Mac, since the Date & Time control panel has a "Daylight
savings time" check box, which I had checked. I assumed that when it came
to the correct day, the Mac would automatically adjust the clock. So
imagine my surprise when I found out that I had to manually uncheck the
box to adjust the time 1 hour back! What's the point of that???
Here's how I think it should work:
If the box is checked, then it means you live somewhere that uses DST,
and the Mac should adjust the time automatically in the fall and spring.
If the box is not checked, you live in Arizona, Indiana, or somewhere
else that does not use DST, and the Mac shouldn't do anything special.
Now, there's NO WAY I'm going to add ANOTHER extension to my system
folder to do this; it's easy enough to do manually. But why does the Date
& Time CP do that? Why tease us with that checkbox?

I have seen this error, and it seems to occur for me when trying to copy
to a disk that is DOS-formatted. I was, however, copying 1.44 MB
floppies. I learned to re-format DOS disks before using them with Disk
Copy.

Subject: Disk Copy 4.2 Summary
Thanks to all who answered my call for help.
Since this issue has attracted a bit of discussion, I hope this summary
of the answers that I have found and been sent would help.
1. Error -74. Once the error was explained as a write overrun, the
reason for the error became more obvious. What may seem to be a
perfectly good 1.4M diskette, may be a damaged diskette capable of
holding less than 1.4M. To find out, erase your disk using Disk First
Aid. If, after most of the formatting is done, the text in the dialog
box changes to "updating the disk", your disk capacity drops below 1440K
as bad sector (block?) information is written to your disk. If you don't
like using damaged disks, throw them out (or reformat for the WinTel PC).
2. I have no idea how all the 1.4M diskettes, I originally tried were
damaged. I cleaned my drive and still had problems with the disks, but
as I can format other 1.4M diskettes the problem is not hard.
3. ShrinkWrap. Love the program. Unfortunately, it is not fully
compatible with my Mac. I cannot copy the disk images directly to a
disk. For those who asked about my system, I still use my trusty Mac II,
with a DayStar Turbo040 accelerator (and Mode 32), and System 7.5.1
(International version).
4. Also suggested as an improvement over Disk Copy was Disk Charmer. I
have not had time to try this program yet.
5. Other programs were sent, and all of it was appreciated. The success
of these programs, I hope to determine sometime.
6. There was no issue of 800K diskettes.

Subject: Excel 5 makes mac 7.5.5 unstable?
Hi,
My mac has become very very unstable. It used to be that I would crash about
once every three or four days, now it seems like twice a day or worse.
The only thing I've done is start running Excel 5. Looking at my active
process list I see that Excel starts up an OLE background app. I also seem to
remember people saying that the OLE implementation on the Mac was bad (I can
understand why that might be!). But, I also remember people claiming that
removing the OLE extension from the startup folder improved the stability of
their macs.
All, however, are from so long ago I have no clue if they are true. If anyone
knows what is up, please let me know! TIA.
I'm running on a 68K now, but about to upgrade to a PPC.
Cheers,
Gordon.

What I do isn't automatic, but it's better than typing in the info. I keep
a stickie on my desktop with
ftp://mirror.apple.com/mirrors/info-mac/
I then copy the other part
app/word-trans-swedish.hqx
and paste it on to the end. I then copy or drag & drop the whole mess into
a Web Ninja window. The begining part is always on the stickie to be used
again. When I go back on line, I can download the files I want. I also copy
URL's to Web Ninja from the various mail ists I subscribe to.
Before I started using Web Ninja, I just collected all the ftp or url
addresses on stickies, to be accessed as I wanted.

My setup is quite close to what you're asking for, and it would only take
me a few minutes with Quickkeys or something similar to automate it.
Here's what you need: Internet Config, and Anarchie. Internet Config has
a setting for "default info-mac mirror." Set it to your favorite mirror.
Then, here's what you do.
Copy "/info-mac/dir/appname.hqx" from the digest. Switch to Anarchie;
hit cmd-E (for "Get via FTP"). Then hit cmd-V to paste into the dialog
box; Anarchie sees that it's an info-mac path, and checks with Internet
Config to insert the appropriate machine and path. It's almost automagic!
Hit return or enter, and anarchie goes to work downloading for you.
Good luck,
Dan

I read InfoMac in EasyView.
With an IP connection up, a CMD-click on the
'/info-mac/app/word-trans-swedish.hqx' launches Anarchie,
checks for the InfoMac mirror setting in Internet Config,
and downloads the file to my desktop without any further
action from me.

Again, if there isn't a FAQ on this, there should be. This one comes up a lot.
Stan, when an app quits, it frees up the memory it used. If you're lucky. But
we won't get into ill-behaved programs here.
That freed-up memory is in very specific locations. Other apps don't "slide
down" to fill in the gap. Consider the following memory map:
[ system ][ App-1 ][ App-2 ][ free ]
Then quit App-1 and you get
[ system ][ free1 ][ App-2 ][ free2]
You do NOT get
[ system ][ App-2 ][ free ]
unless you first quit App-2 and re-launch it.
Therefore, after quitting App-1, if your third app doesn't fit inside free1
or free2, you won't have enough memory to launch it, EVEN IF IT WOULD FIT IN
SUM OF FREE1 AND FREE2.
The app must fit in the largest CONTIGUOUS free space.

Folk, I present an utterly trivial problem.
PowerBook 5300cs, System 7.5.5 -- but it occurred on the original 7.5.1 Sys.
The PB went back to Apple on its "extended recall" program even though I'd
not seen any of the symptoms that would warrant a recall. They insisted.
Sometimes (Do you hate that as much as I do?) the startupscreen appears
normally. Sometimes I get a rather odd B/W thingie of no aesthetic value
with a black margin of about an inch or so on the screen.
The problem is trivial. It has no effect on the PB's functionality.
Have any of y'all seen anything like this? Better, do any of y'all know
what causes it? And how to maybe fix it?
Enquiring minds want to know.

Can some kind soul enlighten me on the differences of the various PPC
CPUs. Is a 604 so much better then a 603e? Is the 601 really more
powerful then the 603e? What makes the difference? How much faster has a
603e to be to be compareable with the 604?
A comprehensive list of MacBench processor scores is available at:
Pamela Piffner, the editor of MacUser, has written a great explanation of=
why=20
MacBench is the best way to evaluate the performance of Mac OS systems at=
:
Briefly, the nice thing about MacBench is that it does actual work based =
on=20
actual application performance. Therefore, MacBench takes all relevant fa=
ctors=20
into account. Simply checking the processor model name (601, 603, 604) an=
d=20
speed (120 MHz, 240 MHz) can't account for differences such as L1 and L2 =
cache,=20
interleaved memory, bus speed, bus width, and virtual memory. The MacBenc=
h=20
processor test can and does.=20
End Shameless plug
All of this makes Andrew Maier's questions above a little more complex. D=
o you=20
assume that all other factors are constant (for example, motherboard desi=
gn,=20
bus speed, and L2 cache) when comparing a 603 to a 604? No commercially=20
available machines do that. So you answer the question "How much better t=
han=20
the 603ev is the 604e?" differently from the question, "Should I buy a sy=
stem=20
with a 603ev or a 604e?"
It seems to me that only real propeller heads (such as myself) would care=
about=20
the answer to the first question. But no matter who cares about it, it is=
a=20
devilishly hard question to answer and the MacBench team spends a signifi=
cant=20
amount of time trying to do it. Generally, the comparisons you see from t=
he AIM=20
alliance are based on the "all other things held constant, replacing X=20
processor for Y processor yields a change of Z percent in performance."=20
But when look at a system to buy, "all other things" are _not_ held const=
ant.=20
Therefore, most people care about the answer to the second question. 604=
-based=20
machines not only have better processors, but they typically also have be=
tter=20
logic-board design such as interleaved memory.
The answer to the question of how well _any_ machine works for developmen=
t=20
requires the answer to a second question: How big is your project?
The name of the game in software development is processor subsystem speed=
: the=20
better the processor subsystem, the faster your dev time. The processor=20
subsystem is almost always the limiting factor, although disk is a fairly=
close=20
second, especially on memory constrained systems.=20
I have developed on a Q950, an 8100/100 and a newer machine is in the wor=
ks yet=20
again. When working on big projects such as MacBench, I have always felt=20
constrained by the speed of my machine. However, on fairly small projects=
,=20
speed has not been as big of an issue. If you are a hobbyist shareware=20
developer, or just getting started, you need much less power than if you =
are=20
developing commercial size and quality applications. Faster processors ar=
e=20
always nicer, no two ways around that, but you should consider how much p=
ower=20
you want, how much power you need, then add a fair amount to grow. How go=
od=20
will a powerbase be for development? The answer really depends on how muc=
h=20
power you need.

Subject: Question about Ram Doubler
Well, I finally did it, I upgraded my old dinosaur (Macintosh IIfx) to a
Power Mac (Performa 6360), but I'm finding problems with some of my old
applications / extentions. The one that I have the greatest question
about is Ram Doubler. I got Ram Doubler from a special promotion with
Microsoft office (4.2.1). This version of Ram Doubler did not support
Power Macintoshes, so when I try to install it on my new computer, the
installer won't let me. I downloaded the patch to update the old install
disk to RD 1.61, but another problem is that I can't update the
installer. Because it is not the right disk (The RD installer came on a
disk with the Microsoft office program), the patcher doesn't recognize
this as a valid updatable installer. I tried one other method of getting
RD to my new Macintosh. I updated the extension that was on my old
Macintosh with the patcher, and then copied it to my new computer. I
suppose that my new computer recognizes that it is not an original copy,
and won't take it, telling me that I need to re-install Ram Doubler from
the original disks. See the problem??? I really need something to
remedy my situation. I find that system 7.5.3 is a Ram hungry system..
much more than my old system 7.1.1. Please email me directly. Thanks in

Subject: Reading PC disks
I have come across a peculiar problem reading DOS formatted disks on my Mac
with the standard Apple control panel. It occurs when I try to read a
multi-part .zip archive which fills the entire disk. When I copy the file to
the Mac hard disk, it copies it unreasonably quickly, and then when I look
at the file, I find that although it is the right length, the contents are
nothing like the original. Often, the word 'desktop' appears near the
beginning.
I suspect that the problem is that there is no space on the disk for the Mac
to write its extra disk information, and so it gets confused. One way around
the problem is to use the wonderful HexEdit utility (from info-mac of
course). If I load HexEdit, go to the desktop, insert the disk holding down
option and command to rebuild the desktop, and then load the .zip file into
HexEdit, when I save it from HexEdit onto the hard disk, it does it
properly.
Has anyone else come across this problem, and is there a more elegant
solution?
