I am now adding various articles that would be of interest to many of my
readers from the Apple Technical Information Library. Also, I have added
links to each of Apple's major web pages on the internet. There are over
75 links here alone.
The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and
tutorials. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While reviews are
useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how to use your
your Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice and
intermediate users. Each issue includes many tips about using your Mac.
The tutorials are accompanied by graphics that help to understand the
article. More information is being added each month for subscribers
incuding the Members Helping Members program along with our fellow user
group members favorite internet sites. This is a shareware product that
has even more information and tips for those that register. This is a
short, fascinating download well worth the time. This month's tutorial
article is available to subscribers only.
This newsletter is distributed as a Docmaker application. NO other

AMICO is a utility that helps you change the order of the items that
appear in the apple menu. It also lets you insert divider lines
between these items.
AMICO can be included in CD-ROMs or posted to Macintosh software
archives.
For more information read the "Read Me" file.
Version 2.1 fixes a bug that prevented AMICO from working
in applications other than the Finder.

Subject: [*] Anarchie 2.0.1
Anarchie is the preeminent Internet FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client for
the Macintosh. It lets you browse Internet FTP sites, upload or download
files, or find files using an Archie search, Mac Search or Site Indexing.
Anarchie is a mature, robust and reliable program suitable for everyone
from power users to Internet novices.
Anarchie comes with bookmarks for dozens of UMich and Info-Mac mirror
sites, and the new Mac Search engine (hosted by Ambrosia Software, Inc.)
allows you to very rapidly find files on these sites and then download them
from a local mirror.
Anarchie is Apple Scriptable and Recordable, and the scripting allows you
to fetch and store files to/from FTP sites, so you can automate all sorts
of routine FTP tasks. If you have Frontier, it supports Menu Sharing as
well as Frontier scripting.
Changes since v1.6 are:
+ PowerPC native.
+ Upload and Download folders.
+ Mac Search file search engine.
+ Tips window.
+ Lots of User Interface enhancements.
Changes since 2.0
+ Fixed a problem with international (high bit set) characters.
Anarchie requires System 7, MacTCP 1.1 or Open Transport 1.1, and is US$10
shareware. Version 2.0.1 is a free upgrade to registered users who
registered after 1 Jan 1996. Users who registered prior to 1996 can
upgrade and receive a 50% discount.
Hope you like it,

Subject: [*] ANN: YA-Base64 1.2.9
YA-Base64 version 1.2.9 has just been released.
Yet Another Base64 Decoder version 1.2.9 is a simple droplet designed to
decode MIME Base64 encoded as well as uuencoded files that are dropped upon
it. It assumes that all segments of the original MIME or uuencoded document
have been concatenated into the file being decoded, and that the segments
are in order. It will optionally attempt to recursively decode files until
no further Base64 decoding or uudecoding is possible.
This is intended primarily as a helper application for Yet Another
NewsWatcher. It is not a general purpose MIME document decoder. It is not
even a general purpose Base64 decoder. Neither is it a fast or smart
uudecoder. However, it does handle most usenet Base64 and uuencoded
binaries fairly well, and it can deal with multiple attached files.
YA-Base64 requires System 7 or later. It also requires Internet Config to
assign the proper creator and type to decoded files.
Version 1.2.9 includes the following fixes and improvements:
* Adds detection and decoding of MacBinary format files.
* Adds the option to not restore the modification date of MacBinary,
AppleDouble and similar MIME Base64 encoded files. This is useful with
programs like YA-NewsWatcher 2.4.x that scan a folder to detect new
images to display.
* Yields much more processor time when it is idle.
* Fixes a problem with decoding multiple AppleDouble attachments in the
same file.

Subject: [*] BulkRate 2.5.1
Version 2.5.1 of BulkRate, the offline reader for FirstClass has been
released.
BulkRate is an offline reader for FirstClass BBSs that runs on the Macintosh.
It can capture messages for offline reading and replying, and can
automatically retrieve attached files for you. BulkRate is shareware - $25
US.
Shareware payments are now handled via Kagi. Use the Register program
included with BulkRate, or register via the World-Wide-Web:
If you re-upload BulkRate to other BBSs or services, please include all the
files that came with it, especially the documentation.
Send bug reports or suggestions to [email protected] or to the OneNet
BulkRate conference.
BulkRate 2.5 adds support for TCP/IP connections to FirstClass servers, and
in addition can make use of any available serial port for "normal" modem
connections - even PC Card modems.
BulkRate 2.5.1 fixes some problems with FirstClass Server 3.5.
BulkRate 2.5.1 was written to fix some problems with using BulkRate with
FirstClass 3.5 Servers.
Two items have been addressed:
1) Failure while setting Preferences soon after log on. This was (mostly)
fixed in BulkRate 2.5 (final), but there were still occasions in which it
might fail. This version fixes that.
2) File transfers with a 3.5 Server. With BulkRate 2.5, downloads would use
128 byte blocks, affecting performance, and uploads simply didn't work at
all. Some fixes have been put in place for these. See my notes below.
Additionally:
* The Palette should be more legible on black and white monitors.
* I fixed a problem with the Speech menu becoming corrupted if the quit
process was cancelled.

Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras is a set resources for Kaleidoscope.
Kaleidoscope is a shareware control panel by Greg Landweber and friends.
Included in Dave's Kaleidoscope Extras are four original color schemes, a
desktop pattern, desktop PICT and a couple of other goodies. The color
schemes included are called Kronos, Lake Road, Mercury and Mondrian. Kronos
is a graphite colored hi-tech scheme. This scheme is similar to Eclipse but
was made more "Hi-Tech" like by adding "Hi-Tech" titlebar buttons, scroll
arrows, scroll thumbs and recolored menus based on screenshots of the
"Hi-Tech" MacOS 8 theme. Mercury is a silver colored scheme with lots of
nice shiny buttons. Lake Road is a dark forest green scheme for that
outdoorsie look. Mondrian, inspired by the De Stijl artist of the same
name, is a grey scheme that uses primary red yellow and blue for buttons.

Subject: [*] eDOC 1.2.1
eDOC 1.2.1: an autonomous-document software
--Ceci est la version en anglais de eDOC. Une version en francais est egalement
disponible.--
eDOC(tm) is a shareware program which enables preparation of so-called
"autonomous" or "portable" documents from most Macintosh applications. Such
documents can be read and printed without the need for the source application
to
be available, while maintaining their original content and layout.
Standard eDOC documents are read using a free application (eDOC Reader) which
is
included in the package. The Reader is small in size (about 75K) and has
several
viewing, searching and copying options. eDOC also provides the ability to
create
self-reading documents (SRDs), which contain an embedded viewer application and
therefore do not require the separate Reader application. The embedded viewer
adds less than 60K to the document size.
Since version 1.2, eDOC provides three main new features:
- new Index function in eDOC Reader. This function can be used to build a
Table of Contents either manually or automatically (based on Font/Style/Size)
or
simply to add bookmarks. Index can be displayed from self-reading
documents, too.
- new "Find in Index first" option in eDOC Reader and self-reading documents,
which provides an ultra-fast access to indexed items
- new "Append to Existing File" option in eDOC Creator
Moreover, a custom version of eDOC Creator which creates self-reading documents
with a full German Interface is now available.
Version 1.2.1 is a maintenance version which fixes several bugs in eDOC
Reader.
- a bug which prevented entering any numeric characters (1-9) when editing the
Index entries text has been fixed.
- Up and Down arrrow keys were not working properly when pressed quickly
several times. This has been fixed.
- some display bugs with small size documents have been fixed
eDOC is fast and requires very little memory or disk space. Typical uses of
eDOC
include:
- storing company's documentation on the server
- storing your personal documentation on your own computer
- preparing documentation for outside electronic distribution
eDOC may also be useful in other circumstances. It is for example quite
convenient for capturing Web pages or performing printing preview tests.

Subject: [*] eDOC F-1.2.1
eDOC F-1.2.1: Gestionnaire de documents autonomes
--This is the French version of eDOC. An English version is available, too.--
taille a ete corrige.
- Deux erreurs dans les ressources de la version francaise ont ete corrigees.

Subject: [*] LaCie Joule Drive Icons
This is a set of about six icons I colored in one night when I was bored
silly. They're spin-offs on the B/W icon that is default on Joule Base
systems. (I don't have any additional mounts for it yet.
two that show the base and a mount (one small mount, one large mount);
one each of a base only, a folder with the mini-icon of the base, and a
base with a mini-icon of a folder. I don't really mind if they are
distributed as a whole or part, or modified. They are free. (I don't
think I could charge for them if I tried.
(joule tm LaCie, yadda yadda blah blah yadda.. etc.)
I am also making a bit of a request - has anyone seen any icons
representing Iomega drives, specifically the Jaz? The ones that are
default are a bit... tacky, IMO. A nice icon of the drive would be cool.

Subject: [*] MacSOUP 2.2b5 - an offline reader for news and mail
The 2.2b4 version that I released yesterday contained two major bugs.
Here's a new version that fixes them:
- After creating a new mailbox, MacSOUP would report a -43 error when
you tried to open that mailbox, and it wouldn't let you open the
settings file from then on. Fixed.
- Ater creating a new newsgroup, MacSOUP would crash with an internal
error when you tried to open it. Fixed.
For those who have missed it, here's the announcement of 2.2b4 again:
*****
Please read the version history! It contains important information about
a major user interface change in the subject window. The version history
is included with this distribution, or available online at
Here's a brief summary of the most important changes:
- The subject window behaves more Mac-like. You can shift-click or
command-click to select multiple messages, and you can finally
delete individual headers.
- AppleScript support.
- You can specify how many articles you want to fetch at most, with or
without a warning dialog (can be set individually for each group)
- You can now keep copies of your outgoing news postings.
- Improvements to the graphical thread display
- Using Emailer for mail replies now actually works.
- Many other minor enhancements.
- Lots of bug fixes.

Subject: [*] MidiChaos 1.5
MidiChaos is an application/utility/game/composition tool
conceived by Peter Randlette and I in 1989 at The Evergreen State
College in Olympia, Washington. It is implemented in HMSL (a
Forth based composition language developed here at the Mills
College Center for Contemporary Music) and since its primitive
beginnings has evolved, with help from Phil Burk, into a fairly
interesting bit of software. Basically, it allows one to map the
output from chaotic equations to the Midi parameters of pitch,
velocity, and duration.
Exciting features:
- Easy To Use Graphical interface
- Up to four (depending on the speed of your CPU)
simultaneous"voices"
- Four equations to choose from for added hours of enjoyment
and/or torture of your pets, neighbors, and loved ones
- Standard Midifile support so you can load your funky output
into sequencers and notation software
- Preset system for real-time interactive noodling as well as the
ability to group, save, and reload "banks" of related behaviors
- Source code included for HMSL users and the curious
Two graphical control screens are used to operate MidiChaos.
With the default screen you can turn voices on and off, change
midi channels, assign an equation to a Midi parameter, tweak the
equations, force output into specific ranges, and turn midifile
recording on and off. The preset screen, accessable with the
screens menu or with the indicated command-key combinations,
allows you to save configurations of the main screen into preset
banks that can be stored on disk. By the way, pulling down the
menu while MidiChaos is running will suspend output until you let
go, so using the command keys is the better choice. Also, most
of the menu bars pertain to HMSL operation and are disabled for
this turnkey application in case you were wondering.
REQUIREMENTS:
- A Macintosh or PowerMac
On a 68040 machine, caches must be OFF!
FPU recommended but not necessary.
- Apple's MIDI Manager This is included.
- MIDI Interface
MidiChaos is configured to use the Modem Port.

Subject: [*] MyEyes 2.1.3
What is MyEyes?
MyEyes is a small extension that draws on the menubar a pair of eyes
constantly following the cursor movement.
What's new in MyEyes 2.1.3
- Recompiled with CodeWarrior 10.
- Some parts of the extension's code have been rewritten in order to
enhance its robustness and compatibility and reduce the "double eyes"
effect (if you don't know what I'm talking about, luckily you've never seen
it).
- The MyEyes Extension is now FAT, i.e. it contains both 68k and
PowerPC code.
- The extension's memory partition has been raised to 80k to avoid
possible 'out of memory' errors on machines running the latest Mac OS
updates (especially the new 7.5.5).
- A "shareware reminder" now appears at startup if you are running an
unregistered version of MyEyes.
- The setup application now sports a better looking interface, with a
trendy 3D style.
- Clicking on the URLs and e-mail addresses in the setup application's
about dialog automatically launches your Web browser or e-mail application
(requires Internet Config 1.1 or later) .
- The MyEyes package is now distributed in form of an easy to use
"Installer" application.
- Updated the documentation as usual.
Requirements
MyEyes requires System 7 and color Quickdraw; Apple Events handling
capability is needed too.
Installation
Starting with version 2.1.3 the MyEyes package is distributed in form of an
"Installer" application.
To install MyEyes just launch the installer and follow the simple
instructions. It is recommended to restart your Macintosh after
installation.
Distribution
MyEyes is 10$ shareware.
You can distribute MyEyes freely, provided that you leave the software and
the accompanying documentation unchanged. You can include MyEyes in CD-ROMs
and other software collections only by previous agreement.
Thanks and best regards.

Hidden in some Mac models is an option that is very useful for BBS
systems and other servers. They can be set to automatically start up when
power is restored after a power failure. Apple just documented this handy
feature in Tech Note 1079 - Power Management & Servers: Auto Restart from
Power Failure.
ServerPower is a very simple extension that turns on this feature if it
is supported on a given machine. That's all it does, there is no user
interface and no code is installed in the system. Documentation and full
Metrowerks "C" source code is included.
I have no idea which Macs provide File Server power mode but the startup
icon will display with a large X through it if the runtime check
determines the mode is not supported. For full details see the Apple Tech
Note. From my own tests it appears that the PowerMac 7500 and IIvx
support it but the IIfx does not.

Why don't you try CopyPaste? It can save clipboard contents to any one of
10 user archives just using the clipboard, plus a lot more. You can get
the Japanese version from , or the
English version from Info-Mac.

BIngo. If you log in as the owner of the machine, you see everything,
regardless of sharing status.
If you log in as someone else ["guest" or some other user], you see only
what you have specifically made visible to that user.

Subject: Mac / Windows for Workgroups
Hello,
I am a Mac user in a company that has only IBM compatible PC's and MF and
VAX and Sun. The PC's share data using a Windows for Workgroup network and
they also share an HP printer on that same network. (Ethernet)
Much in the same way as my Apple Fileshare ans Printershare at home.
Once in a while I connect using serial transfers, however I would love to buy
an Ethernet card for my Mac to hook in. However this only makes sense
if I have a way of using file and/or printer sharing. Does ANYBODY have
an idea, if connecting to a WfW network is possible ? How? What Product?
I am aware of alternatives like a TCP/IP stack on the PC etc.
Thanks for your help and info

Subject: Sharing Printer on an Ethernet Network
I will be implementing a network of PowerPC's and several localtalk
printers (Apple LaserWriter NT and an HP 4ML). I'd like to set it up with
minimum pain and maximum speed. Any ideas? I've heard about the LocalTalk
Bridge, is this a solution? Will I still need to dedicate a computer to
this? Is there some kind of FAQ? Will any hub work? (wow didn't think I
had all these questions!) Thanks....

Is sound elsewhere [games, etc] unaffected?
The only thing that springs to mind is that maybe, when you took it apart
and reassembled it, the speaker connection got left a little loose. If
that's not it, I'm stumped. I've not seen this sort of thing caused by a
memory upgrade before.
If the speaker connection is fine, then the next thing I'd try would be to
go back to the 8Mb SIMM to see if the problem goes away, though I wouldn't
expect it to.

Subject: uncancellable print jobs
I have been able to get no help with this problem and am going crazy!
My Quadra 650 and a PowerMac 6100 are hooked up to a LaserWriter IINT.
Lately, the Laserwriter has been choking on some of the files I send it
(usually web pages I try to print, although sometimes things that I'm sure
I have printed okay before.) I can cancel them out of the
printmonitor/desktop thing, but the printer does not clear. It keeps
flashing, and no new jobs will print.
According to Apple's TIL, the printer may keep processing the chunk of the
job it was working on when you cancelled for several minutes after the
cancel; then, "When the PostScript interpreter is ready to receive more of
the print job data from the client, it detects the PAP connection is closed
and invokes the WaitTimeout timer, the default of which for Apple
LaserWriters is 300 seconds (5 minutes)" So generously speaking it should
cancel within 15 minutes. It does NOT.
The other day I cancelled something at about 4:30 pm. At 7:30 I got a call
at home from the 6100 user. She wanted to know what I was trying to print,
because it was still working on it and she couldn't print anything! You can
clear it by turning the printer off, but NOT if there are other jobs lined
up to print. You must stop the printer queue/delay the pending print jobs,
or it will keep right on flashing mindlessly once the printer comes back
on.
Only I (the Quadra) have had a problem with it. It's happened with both
Laserwriter v8.3.3 and 8.4.1. I use 7.5.5 now, don't know if I did when
this problem started.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Or why the
printer suddenly doesn't like to print things I'm SURE I've printed before?
