Subject: [*] "Holiday System Clock" Sounds
"Holiday System Clock" Sounds
(8-bit Version)
Now that the Holidays are upon us, it's time to add a Christmas touch to
your Mac! The "Holiday System Clock" sounds are a set of 4 high-quality
stereo sounds that can play on your Mac at 1/4 Past, 1/2 Past, 1/4 'Til,
and Top Of the Hour, without the use of extra software. If you have
System 7.5 or above, or the shareware "SuperClock" control panel, these
sounds are great for customizing your Mac for the Holidays.
Each sound file is a stanza of the popular carol "We Wish You A Merry
Christmas," so that at 1/4 Past, your Mac plays the first stanza "We wish
you a Merry Christmas...," 1/2 Past plays the second, 1/4 Past plays the
third, concluding with "...and a happy new year!" at the Top Of the Hour.
The "Holiday System Clock" sounds are part of the Clixsounds "Holiday
Series" of sounds and can be downloaded here, or at the Clixsounds WWW
site, along with many other Holiday System Sounds. This set is available
in both 16-bit/44kHz and 8-bit/22kHz versions.
For more Holiday Sounds, visit the Clixsounds WWW site at:
This file is freeware and redistribution of the archive in its entirety
is welcome. Instructions are included with the file for proper
installation. Note that a portion of the file is a catalog containing

blue letters with drop shadows. It only took a few minutes
to make, but it is high-quality and looks really nice!

Subject: [*] IP NetMonitor 1.0 Macintosh Internet Tools (68K)
IP NetMonitor 1.0 provides six useful Internet tools:
1) Test Connectivity (Ping)
2) Trace Route
3) DNS lookup and reverse lookup
4) Who Is
5) Monitor (like MacTCP Monitor but for Open Transport)
6) Subnet Calculator (to simplify working with IP addresses and masks)
What's different, or why use IP NetMonitor when there are other
similar tools, some of which are free?
IP NetMonitor Features:
* A complete basic Internet toolkit (ping, traceroute, nslookup, whois).
* Full Macintosh user interface makes these tools more accessible.
* Unique OT native Monitor tool provides an accurate view of network
throughput and responsiveness.
* Asynchronous DNS lookups make trace route quick and easy.
* Tight design uses screen space efficiently.
Drag-&-Drop, or edit in place.
* Superior integration.
Automatically transfers corresponding data from one tool to another.
Supports GURL Apple Event.
The well organized displays and integrated design allow both new
and experienced Internet users to see how the net is working, and
quickly identify and report common problems.
The full version of IP NetMonitor ("IP NetLink") will add Internet
Protocol routing when multi-homing is supported in Open Transport 1.5 .
Registered users of the tools only version (IP NetMonitor) will receive
purchase price credit toward the full version (IP NetLink) when it
becomes available.
IP NetMonitor 1.0 requires MacOS 7.5.1 and Open Transport 1.1.1 or later.
It is shareware, US$10.
I hope you find these tools useful and look forward to your
comments and suggestions.

Subject: [*] Italian Verbs 1.2.2 - language teaching program
The inflection of verbs is one of the difficult parts of learning
Italian since there are many irregular verbs. "Italian Verbs 1.2"
is a database that helps you to learn and refresh
your knowledge about the rules for the inflection of verbs.
The database contains 438 irregular verbs, and 320 regular
verbs with suffix -are that form compound tenses with "avere".
There are 4 predefined custom groups of verbs:
* irregular verbs with suffix -ire,
* irregular verbs with suffix -are,
* irregular verbs with suffix -ere,
* intransitive regular verbs with suffix -are that form compound
tenses with "avere".
To open this database you should use the application "Verbs & Nouns"
version 1.2.4 or higher (/info-mac/edu/lang/verbs-and-nouns-124.hqx).
The program "Verbs & Nouns" allows to:
* modify the database,
* practise inflection or translation of verbs,
* generate tests (with full statistic of results),
* record sound and make notes about the verbs,
* merge many databases into a single one.

This is the latest {Dec 2, 1996} version this report and should replace
the previous version of mac-ftp-list.txt.
This is a update {Dec 2, 1996} to Mike Gleason and Bruce Grubb's Mac FTP
list. It lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes), over
65 Mac web pages, contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs
decompress and decode which files and a section on how to use certain
decoded files. This archive contains both the text and html versions.
Please note that the html part is actually four crosslinked files:
mac-ftp-list.html, ftp-list.html, www-section.html, and site-notes.html
that require HTML Browser such as Lynx, Mosaic or NetScape to view.
Must be in a monospaced font to be readable; Courier 10pt is recommended,

Subject: [*] MacUpdate 4.0b7 File Synchronization/Backup
MacUpdate is a general-purpose file synchronization utility
that is simple enough to be used for every-day backups, yet
is flexible and powerful enough for specialized backup needs.
Changes to this updated version include a progress bar
display while synchronizing, deferral of error reporting
until after the synchronization process is complete, the
ability to replace newer files in a destination folder with
the corresponding older files from a source, the ability to
deal with locked loners that need to be deleted, and a few
minor bug fixes.
MacUpdate can be configured to create items on the backup
disk that are new on the original disk. Similarly, MacUpdate
can be set up to delete items from the backup disk that were
deleted from the original disk.
MacUpdate works with Zip, SyQuest, floppy disks, hard disks,
and AppleTalk networks. Pretty much any Hierarchical Filing
System (HFS) disk. MacUpdate requires System 7, and a 68020
or better, or Power PC processor. MacUdpate is a Fat binary.
MacUpdate can also do graphical comparisons of the contents
of two folders -- similar to a Finder list view. You can
visually "Preview" what will be updated before actually
performing a synchronization.
MacUpdate fully supports drag-and-drop from the Finder.
MacUpdate includes automation tools and good documentation.

Subject: [*] Mech's Folder Icon Maker RSRCs: Shared, Monitor, AhiTek, HD, Be
Mech's Folder Icon Maker Resources
Four Folder Icon Maker resource docs (tested with FIM 1.5), for making
custom folder (or disk, or whatever) icons:
1) Shadowed Shared Folder - modeled on the Copland-clone "Shadowed Folder"
resource that comes with FIM. Allows you to do custom icons for folders
you expect to always be shared.
2) Monitor - a realistic-looking monitor. The application/document mini-icon
appears in the center of the screen. Great for your main hard drive icon.
3) AhiTek - the funky-looking folder-thing from the AhiTek patch for Aaron.
If you dig that patch, but want to make your own custom AhiTek-style
folders,
this'n's for you.
4) CoplandHD - a Copland/Aaron/Kaleidoscope-style hard drive icon. App/doc
mini
icon on top.
5) BeOS-like Folder - based on the blank folder from "Joe's Folder Icons 1.6",
in turn a clone of the BeOS default folder icon. Joe's 1.6 provides a pile
of ready-made folder icons, but it's much easier for folks to just generate
the Be-style folders they want with FIM than hunt-n-peck for pre-made ones
in a collection.
I made these for my own use, and post them as an afterthought, in case one
or two people out there will save a minute of time, or otherwise get some
enjoyment out of them.
No copyright claimed, public domain (ergo may be archived, redistributed

someone, e.g. Apple, Be Inc., or author of AhiTek, might claim some kind of

Mech's Aaron/Kaleidoscope/System Icon Replacement Resources
Icon replacements (in a ResEdit resource file) for Kaleidoscope, Aaron, the
System file, or whatever. I created it for and tested it with Kaleidoscope
1.0 (non-beta.)
Paste the new icons into your target file (a copy of Aaron, Kaleidoscope or
the System file) with ResEdit, move the original to a backup location, and
put your patched version in its place.
Now restart your Mac. You should, upon reboot, have new trash and other icons
(some cloned or modified from some interesting ones that came with other
patches for Kaleidoscope, some my own tweaks of default icons). The icons
will look best with Aaron or the Aaron-derived Kaleidoscope schemes. Among
the changes include black & silver belts on locked folders, red drop arrows,
a red "A" on the Fonts folder, and a very happy System Folder icon, nabbed
>From another patch, red tabs on the tabbed folder, and a return to the
original
Aaron icon for the Control Panels folder (in large size, anyway - I didn't
bother with the ics8 and ics4 versions). A new cicn for the trash can matches
the replacements in the other icon resources. There are also better looking
cicn resources of various sorts, again borrowed from another Kaleidoscope
patch.
I made this for my own use, and post it as an afterthought, in case one or two
people out there will get some enjoyment out of it.
No copyright claimed, public domain (ergo may be archived, redistributed,

Subject: [*] MidiChaos 1.5
MidiChaos is an application/utility/game/composition tool
conceived by Peter Randlette and I in 1989 at The Evergreen State
College in Olympia, Washington. It is implemented in HMSL (a
Forth based composition language developed here at the Mills
College Center for Contemporary Music) and since its primitive
beginnings has evolved, with help from Phil Burk, into a fairly
interesting bit of software. Basically, it allows one to map the
output from chaotic equations to the Midi parameters of pitch,
velocity, and duration.
Exciting features:
- Easy To Use Graphical interface
- Up to four (depending on the speed of your CPU)
simultaneous"voices"
- Four equations to choose from for added hours of enjoyment
and/or torture of your pets, neighbors, and loved ones
- Standard Midifile support so you can load your funky output
into sequencers and notation software
- Preset system for real-time interactive noodling as well as the
ability to group, save, and reload "banks" of related behaviors
- Source code included for HMSL users and the curious
Two graphical control screens are used to operate MidiChaos.
With the default screen you can turn voices on and off, change
midi channels, assign an equation to a Midi parameter, tweak the
equations, force output into specific ranges, and turn midifile
recording on and off. The preset screen, accessable with the
screens menu or with the indicated command-key combinations,
allows you to save configurations of the main screen into preset
banks that can be stored on disk. By the way, pulling down the
menu while MidiChaos is running will suspend output until you let
go, so using the command keys is the better choice. Also, most
of the menu bars pertain to HMSL operation and are disabled for
this turnkey application in case you were wondering.
REQUIREMENTS:
- A Macintosh or PowerMac
On a 68040 machine, caches must be OFF!
FPU recommended but not necessary.
- Apple's MIDI Manager
This is included.
- MIDI Interface
MidiChaos is configured to use the Modem Port.

Subject: [*] Print to JPEG 1.0
Print to JPEG 1.0 by Jon Wilson
What is it?
Print to JPEG creates standard JPEG image files via the printing mechanism
on your Macintosh. You can create a JPEG file from virtually any document
that can be printed.
Print to JPEG is an extension for Baudouin Raoult's excellent Print to PICT
utility, which is a printer driver that previews and saves printed pages to
PICT files or the clipboard. Extensions are provided by the author to
write graphic file formats such as GIF and TIFF, but not JPEG.
Why use it?
It is very useful to be able to generate JPEG images from your documents in
one easy step. JPEG is a widely recognized standard. It is supported by
many applications, including every good Web browser. It provides very good
compression, particularly for photographic images. Print to JPEG uses the
components provided with Apple QuickTime to perform the compression, so you
can count on the resulting images being correct. Since the JPEG algorithms
can involve some loss of image quality, it is important to have complete
control over the amount of compression applied. Print to JPEG provides
that control.
What about payment?
Print to JPEG is shareware. I suggest a price of $10 per copy, but feel
free to pay whatever you think it's worth. That means you can pay less or
more, or you can just send me an email at [email protected], asking to be
registered, without sending any money. In any case, your email address
will go into my database for future updates and so on. Once you have
registered Print to JPEG, all future updates are free of charge. I won't
give or sell your details to anyone else.
Requirements
Print to JPEG 1.0 requires Print to PICT 3.7 or later and QuickTime. It
has been tested on numerous Macs and Power Macs, all running System 7.5 or
later, but it should run on any System 7 Machine.

Subject: [*] SoundApp 2.2
I'm happy to announce the availability of SoundApp 2.2. SoundApp is the
premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is
suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the
popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite
sound samples and stand-alone usage. SoundApp remains freeware, so you
may use it at no cost. Information regarding licensing the conversion
and playback routines can be found in the internal "About SoundApp..."
documentation.
SoundApp 2.2 adds the following features:
* Added a new Convert menu to group all the convert output options,
added the capability to save conversion preferences as a named
configuration, added an editor for saved sets, and removed all output
format related options from the Convert preferences pane,
* Added Sound Designer and direct QuickTime output formats,
* Added support for MACE-3 and MACE-6 compression in SoundEdit files,
* Added support for AIFF and 'snd ' files explicitly encoded with the
'twos' and 'raw ' codecs,
* Re-wrote the MIDI code from scratch and added OMS support and a new
MIDI Preferences pane,
* Added an optional Script menu which lists the scripts in a
"Script Menu Items" folder,
* The volume preference is now relative to the system volume, thus
will have no effect on other applications' volume, and can now go
from 10% to 150%,
* Added Info window to provide more information on a sound file,
* Added extensive AppleScript support,
* Conversion of suitcases or MOD files now places the sounds in a
sub-folder, and
* Included new ZSS drivers with MTM support.
SoundApp requires the following:
* At least a 68020 or PowerPC-based Macintosh (sorry 68000 users!),
* System 7.0 or greater, and
* Sound Manager 3.1 or greater (3.1 can be obtained from Apple and 3.2
is included in System 7.5.3 or greater).
Please note that I have no plans to support System 6.0.x, 68000-based Macs,
MPEG on 680x0-based Macs or earlier versions of the Sound Manager. Sorry..

Subject: [*] Spanish Translator 2.1.1
Word Translator - Spanish-English-Spanish
version 2.1 for the Mac - www.tranexp.com/mac
Word Translator is a bilingual word translation software. It can be used
like a normal dictionary to look up translations and also to translate
words from within other applications. It possible to change words and
translations in some versions of the program to extend and customise the
standard dictionaries.
Word Translator is very fast, simple and easy to use. It is meant to be a
convenient tool to find translations so the emphasis so far has been on
making the application fast and easy to use. Future versions will include
a number of features including document translation.
Our users use Word Translator to help with various tasks, including
homework for language classes and composing business letters in a foreign
languages. Professional translators use it to build their own
dictionaries to use in their work, and others like using it as an
assistant when studying foreign languages on their own.
This version fixes several minor bugs from version 2.0b1.

Subject: [*] YA-NewsWatcher version 2.3.5
YA-NewsWatcher version 2.3.5 has just been released.
Version 2.3.5 is a bugfix release. The following changes or fixes have been
made since version 2.3.1.
* Synchronized with John Norstad's (original) NewsWatcher 2.1.5 which
fixed a problem with Internet Config password scrambling.
* Fixed a problem with updating the lists in the Filter Groups dialog
when creating or editing a filter caused a new filter group to be
created.
* Fixed the Status window Cancel button always disabled bug introduced
in 2.3.3.
* Fixed a problem with having to issue a Quit command twice if the
automatically get/put newsrc option was enabled, also introduced in
2.3.3.
* Did some fine tuning of the code called when YA-NW is busy (searching
text, threading articles, etc.) to improve performance, especially on
slower machines.
* Fixed a problem with some mouse clicks or keystrokes being processed
normally when they should be ignored (because the program is already
busy with a network operation).
* Added a work-around for the buggy, non-compliant Microsoft news server
that responds incorrectly to the XOVER command used to fetch headers.

You've got a plug-in somewhere that's leaving the old feature turned on.

Subject: [Q] Odd formatting when printing with QuickDraw GX
I don't have any programs which require QuickDraw GX but I do have a
few QD GX aware programs so I thought I would install QD GX and try it
out. If I print from a QD GX aware program like NisusWriter 5.0, the
formatting on the printed page does not come out correct. For example,
text which is formatted using full justification does not print as
full justified. Rather, the text spills over the right margin with
each line having a slightly different length. Also, the spacing of
characters inside words does not always look correct (e.g.,. there is
too much space between the 's' and the 'o' in 'some'). If I turn off
desktop printing for the application and revert to printing with the
LW 8.3.1 driver the printed output looks ok.
Is this a problem between QD GX, the QD GX printer drivers and whatever
program I am using or could it be a font problem? I am using Adobe's
bitmap fonts instead of Apple's for the standard set of LW+ fonts and I
am using ATM and Type 1 fonts instead of TrueType for Times, Helvetica,
Courier and Symbol.

I had this problem initially. In my case it was caused by "Wagner's
prefs" which, among other things, tells old version of Eudora how to
split messages. BTW, if the plug-in has been deleted, the preferences
remain.
Two ways to fix this problem: Trash "Eudora Settings" and reconfigure
>From scratch. Or if you still use Wagner's prefs, go to Connection
prefs and delete the contents of boxes S1 & S2. Next time you look at
that window, way larger numbers will be in those boxes.
There may be other Eudora plug-ins besides Wagner's that control how
messages are split, but you get the idea. Good luck.

Subject: A laundry list to use on system crash/freeze....
Because all of us are prone to things like occasional Type 11 errors,
Netscape freezes/crashes and the like, here's my laundry list of things to
use after each one. I use all of them all the time because sometimes each
app. does not always give the same results as other apps. Your mileage may
vary!
1. Run Conflict Catcher's "Scan for Damaged Resources" in Preferences menu.
2. Run Tech Tool's System Analyzer (once I was merrily going along for
weeks, running only Norton Disk Doctor, without even knowing I had a
damaged system file until this handy tool told me so.)
3. Run Disk First Aid.
4. Run Norton Disk Doctor.
5. Run MacTools Pro Clinic "check disk."
I have found that with system freezes and crashes, the most common errors
to crop up are volume bitmap info inaccuracies, b-tree and other catalog
errors, and bundle bit info from icons not properly showing up on the
desktop. More infrequently are the things like a damaged System or Finder
file.

Subject: Allocated Memory problems
Hello, I've seen some your articles and I'm wondering if you can help me.
I have a PowerMac 8100/80 with 72 mg RAM, currently running 7.5.5. My
biggest problem is that the system will not allow me to increase allocated
memory for applications. Though I can change the values through command-I
(get info), when I eventually launch the app, it runs at the default value.
And after start up/restart, all values are reset to their defaults.
The two apps I allocate more memory to are Photoshop and FreeHand, usually
running both at around 25/30 mgs. Why is this occuring? Everything seemed
to start going down hill after 7.5. Is there someting I missed?
Any reply would be great
Thanks

I've seen similar problems, where something crashes and when my Mac
reboots Appletalk is switched off. I strongly doubt that the motherboard
battery backup is the problem, since the rest of my 'context' is OK, and
my Mac is only 18 months old. (The battery in my original SE seems to
be OK...
In particular, there seems to be problems associated with LaserWriter Bridge
(which I'm running), perhaps when you try to change your printer.

Subject: Claris Works anomaly
I'm new at this Web business. If this is the wrong place for following
question please forgive. My first day on Web. Totally confused.
I have Claris 4.o1 on my Performa 6200 24/1GB, system 7.5.1. When I
initially attempt to open Claris, I get this annoying dialog box "Copy
busy. Please try again later." On the second try it opens OK. If I quit
Claris, and try again some time later, I get the same dialog box again.
Ihave isolated the problem to an extension conflict with extension,
"Object Support Lib" When I disable this extension, the problem
disappears. However this extension supports important applications, and
therefore it must remain active. How do I get rid of this annoying
dialog box?

Hi,
I have been an avid Mac user for... well... as long as there have been
Macs to be an avid user of! Right now I have a 7100 66 machine and am
dying to upgrade. I found some speed comparisons on line and was
astonished at how your Power Tower Pro 200 whipped the competition
especially when it came to graphics processing! Simply amazing! It was
as much as 5 times faster than some other machines with the same
processor. anyway, I would love to buy one right now but first I have a
few quick question to ask. Please help me out with these because buying
this computer is a huge investment for me:
1) When are the newer 500 MHz machines projected to come out?
2) How much faster (in actuality) for graphics applications will the 500
MHz machines be compared to your current line?
3) Do you offer the ability to customize a machine when purchased from
you-- I have heard the millenium graphics board, though more expensive,
is actually a better deal than the one you currently include with the
PTP 200.
4) How much will the 500 MHZ line cost when it first comes out?
5) If I order a computer from you, how long will it take to arrive?
6) Most importantly, will the Power Tower Pro 200 be upgradable to the
500 MHz processors?
7) Are there any apps that can't handle the speed of your machine? In
other words is there a chance older programs will bomb on your computers
just because they weren't meant to go that fast? I use an old app called
Swivel for 3d modeling since I know the program inside out and can do on
it in minutes what others do in hours with other aps.
Another question. which I didn't ask inside this letter, I would really
love to hear anyone's opinions on is: is the Power Tower Pro really
worth the extra money? What I am planning on doing with my next computer
is hours and hours of 3D work and rendering. I saw a comparson that
showed the Power Tower Pro to be around 3 times faster than other models
using the 604e 200 mhz chip when it came to a Mac bench graphics mix.
Does this actually translate to 3 X faster when you apply it in real
life? And, if I am going to shell out the mega bucks for my new
computer, do any of you think it would be more prudent to go with a Day
Star machine?
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Another option would be to fdisk it in a PC with a SCSI card, then take it

much attention to a software lock on a Mac partition.
