Subject: [!] An experimental tag for updates of current archive files
Hi,
In response to a recent suggestion to differentiate between new files and
updates to existing files at Info-Mac, I tried a new tag for updates.
The "[-]" symbol precedes some updated file announcements in this digest as
a one-time experiment. Since we do not have an easy way to automate this
process, I will have to change the tag by hand. This, of course, means that
I am likely to forget or miss a few files each time.
I am curious about the perceived utility of such differentiation... Please
send your comments and suggestions to [email protected].
Thanks, Igor

Subject: [*] A blank icon
Hello!
I would like to share a neat way to get rid of the "I-like-to-drag-and-drop-
but-all-the-icons-on-my-desktop-take-up-too-much-space" problem.
It is really just a blank icon; transparent, nothing there. I put it on all
my aliases for dragging-and-dropping on my desktop so that I can get a "list"
of these aliases. It's a very nice way of saving space on your desktop.
I made this icon for the benefit of those not familiar with ResEdit or
similar utilities. If you like it, drop me a line at [email protected].
Thanks!

Contacting Your Congressperson
Latest Update: August 5, 1994
These phone numbers were most recently compiled during the 103rd Congress. No
update is planned at this point, but any errors noted will be corrected.
However, on the suggestion of several people, I have added all the e-mail
addresses I cound find over the Internet. If you know of any which may be
missing, send me the info and it will be included in the next version.
I hope you can use this to counter-act some of the idiocy going on in
Washington. Keep in mind that every fax or voice call is interpreted by your
congressperson as equal to the opinion of many more constituents who dont
call.
You can make a difference!

CYBERNATION
Arcade adventure
Current version : 1.0
Arnie the cyborg is trapped in the huge CyberNation cyborg factory. Humans
are planning to destroy it, so Arnie must get out as soon as he can!
Unfortunately, the building is guarded by other cybernetic organisms (like
the dreaded Skulls and the pink-elephant-featuring wine bottles), and the
Teleporters are incomplete -- they require Teleporter dishes in order to
function. Each Teleporter enables Arnie to be sent to the next level.
Escape is at the top level (4)... Shall he make it?
CYBERNATION is for any Mac with 2MB of free memory and System 6 or higher.
B&W or 16/256-color/gray-scale screen.
Registration of CYBERNATION (for US$ 15) entitles you to a 3.5" disk
featuring:
* CYBERNATION DELUXE (which, in addition to CYBERNATION's 4-level Rookie
difficulty, contains the 9-level Medium Rare and 15-level Insane difficulty
levels and many additional goodies and baddies, like the CyberChicken).
* GAMAXIANS (Mac rendition of the arcade classic Galaxians, with
formation-swooping aliens and starry background). This game can not be
found on the Net -- it was written for CYBERNATION registerers exclusively.
* FROGGY (Mac rendition of the old arcade classic Frogger). This game can
not be found on the Net -- it was written for CYBERNATION registerers
exclusively.

Subject: [*] FileFax 3.0 DEMO; itegration between FileMaker Pro and FaxSTF
Enclosed is a DEMO version of FileFax 3.0 for the Macintosh, which allows
you to test FileFax for evaluation purposes for a period of 5-10 days.
The demo version is in no ways limited in its functionality and includes
the full manual (as a MS Word document) as well as a set of samples.
After the trial period it will occasionally start reminding you to order
the full version.
Introducing...
FileFax 3.0
=============
FileFax is a powerful fax-integration software for FileMaker Pro and
FaxSTF. It allows you to
+ Write, send, and organize all your fax communication from
within your FileMaker database. FileFax passes the correct
fax number plus optional cover-page information to the FaxSTF
driver and directly prints your letter to the receiving fax
machine.
+ Compose a mail-merge letter to your customers and automatically
fax each individual customized letter to the corresponding
fax number.
+ Create a newsflash or advertising fax and send it to all the
fax numbers in your marketing database.
+ Automate your accounting and order processing applications so that
they send order confirmations, credit card approval forms, and
invoices automatically via fax.
FileFax extends FileMaker's scripting language by several new powerful
commands that let you directly control the FaxSTF software. Using it's
printer switching technology, FileFax will automatically switch back and
forth between the printer you regulariliy use in the Chooser and the
FaxPrint Driver that is part of FaxSTF. All you have to do is create
one simple script with ScriptMaker - and FileFax does the rest!
FileFax requires FileMaker Pro and FaxSTF 3.0 in order to run. The price
for the full version is US$ 79.-, orders can be placed via electronic mail
and paid by credit card.
For more information please contact us via electronic mail or fax.
Kind regads,
Alexander Falk

Subject: [*] GammaSuite 2.0; QuickTime video editor
GammaSuite is a software program designed for editing QuickTime movies on
the Macintosh. Unlike any other video editing software, GammaSuite is
based around a simple visual data flow model.
The following is a brief list of some of the distinguishing features of
GammaSuite that separates it from the other video editing software on the
market:
FLEXIBILITY
% GammaSuite can edit at any frame rate.
% GammaSuite can edit any size or shape of movie.
% GammaSuite can edit at any pixel depth.
SPEED
GammaSuite only calculates or re-calculates frames where absolutely
necessary. For this reason it is far faster than other programs in
performing most operations.
EXPANDABILITY
GammaSuite is built around an exceptionally powerful framework. All
functionality is based on _new_ plug-in technology. You can remove features
you don't need or add new ones as they become available. Moreover, the
API is far more powerful than the simple Effect/Filter plug-in technology
found in other commercial video editing software.
EASE OF USE
The design of user interfaces is certainly an art form, and, as with all
software, GammaSuite will have both proponents and opponents. Yet every
effort has been made to make all operations highly consistent and
intuitive throughout the software. The entire program can be mastered by
the average Mac user in about 10 minutes! This is in stark contrast to
other video editing software programs available on the market today, which
require a substantial investment in training. The user interface gives
the user a _sense_ _of_ _full_ _control_ over _every_ aspect of the video
editing process.
PRICE
GammaSuite is far cheaper than any other commercial video editing package:
Just $49.
Sound too good to believe? That's why we're making this demo version
available. The proof of the pudding is in the eating! Try it. You'll
like it.
GammaSuite comes with QuickTime, Sound Manager, MoviePlayer, and sample
footage. It requires System 7. (Demo version requires that you already
have QuickTime.) Tools for filering and special effects cost extra.
E-mail any comments, suggestions, etc. to:
[email protected]
We look forward to hearing from you.

Subject: [*] GLMStat 1.2.1; a statistics package
GLMStat is a statistical program for analysing generalised linear models.
It provides a macintosh interface but otherwise operates in a similar
fashion to GLIM but with less features (most of which you probably won't
miss). Features of GLMStat are
- spreadsheet style data entry
- Normal, Poisson, Binomial and Gamma models with appropriate links and
specification of convergence parameters
- Scatter and Residual plots
- Output of deviance, parameter estimates, residuals and parameter
correlations
- Saving of data files complete with all model specifications.
- printing of data, graph and results.
- Online Help (under the apple menu) unfortunately there is currently no
other documentation.
- includes example data files for most examples in two of the texts.
The programme is shareware with a very reasonable fee of $AUD30 for
individual copies or $AUD120 for site licences. ($1AUD is
approximately $US0.70). Further details in the "read me" file.
Unregistered copies are initially fully functional but after 31st
October 1994 unregistered copies will have Save, Save As, Import and Paste
disabled.
This version of GLMStat (1.2.1) has the following changes
- Improved error checking in define dialog.
- Fixed a bug which caused failure to converge when fitting
complete models (I am still working on improving this).
- Fixed bug in generate dialog when no integer columns available.
- Fixed possible error when imported text files do not have a
return at end of file.
- Fixed bug when number of columns in imported files exceeds
limit.
- Fixed display for greater than 90 columns.
- Increased number of allowed columns to 300.
- In Generate set unspecified integer columns to 1.
- I still havent enabled the p Value display for change in
deviance.

Subject: [*] Macintosh shareware fax program
ValueFax is the first shareware fax program for the Macintosh.
This is a commercial quality, full function product with QuickFax,
fax driver, full reception and conversion of the fax in background,
installer, and an online manual. Versions of this product have
been shipping commercially under different names for several years.
The basic product has been thoroughly tested in a variety of Mac
configurations using a variety of Class 1 and Class 2 modems (this
product will not work with modems that support Class 2.0 only or
with Apple's express modems or with Apple's Geoport modems).
It works with all Macs (plus and above) and System 6.0.4 or 7.x.
Latest versions of this product can be found at ftp.netcom.com
in the pub/valuefax directory.
Why would you want to use this product?
* you bought an external fax modem for your PC but you would
also like to use it with your Mac.
* you bought an external fax modem for the Mac but the software
that came with it is too "lite" for your work. The bundled
software may not even work in your configuration.
* you are not happy with your current fax software because it is
old and does not have all the features of ValueFax. What's more,
your current software looks like it has been ported from its
PC (ugh!) version.
* Your company owns several Macs and you are looking for a site
license instead of buying individual copies for everyone.
Support is available via email to [email protected]
We want this product to work in your configuration and we will
do our best to make it work.

Subject: [*] MaxRAM 1.0.4; a RamDoubler utility
What's New in MaxRAM 1.0.4 (Released August 5, 1994)
- Compatibility with versions 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 of RAM Doubler!!
- Previously registered users of versions 1.0 and 1.0.2 can consider this a
free update. There is a $5 shareware fee for all other users.
- MaxRAM allows user to try out the indicator feature on all Macintoshes.
General Information
MaxRAM works in conjunction with RAM Doubler, allowing you to:
- Triple, quadruple, quintuple, or have SIX times as much memory when using
RAM Doubler from Connectix Corporation. Normally, RAM Doubler will double
your RAM, but with the help of MaxRAM, you can have SIX times the installed
memory. That's right - SIX. For example, if you have 8 MB of real RAM in
your Macintosh, MaxRAM will give you 48 MB of RAM. (You can also choose a
lower amount, if you desire.)
- Display an indicator in the menu bar that will flash when RAM Doubler is
used.
To use MaxRAM, simply double click on it, select the desired amount of
RAM (and if you want the indicator on), and click Save. From now on,
you'll have much more RAM than before!!

Subject: [*] MicroWorld 2.0; "a molecular display and analysis program"
This is the successor of MicroWorld 1.2, which has been enhanced in many
respects.
MicroWorld is a molecular display and analysis program. It calculates three
dimensional
models (Lines, Dreiding, Ball&Stick, Space Fill) from 3D atom coordinates,
e.g. from x-
ray data, 3D-databases, publications or other chemistry software. It
features near photo-
realistic output and powerful functions which are, so far, quite rare with
other programs
of this kind.
7 Fast antialiasing: smooth stick drawing.
7 Depth cueing: model colors become darker with increasing distance
to the observer.
7 Transparent space fill models.
7 Up to three different model types in one model.
7 Import of any background picture and optional cast of a model
shadow onto it.
7 Colorizing of selected model parts.
7 Alignment of the model to a point, a bond, or a plane.
7 Display of a color legend for element colors.
7 Mathematical coprocessor not necessarily needed.
7 Hide function.
7 Fast search functions: element, label, group (exact or
substructure, interactive or
non-interactive), protein and DNA/RNA backbone, find in radius.
MicroWorld requires system 6.07 or higher, a 68020 processor or higher and the
presence of Color QuickDraw.

There are quite a few bug fixes from v1.3 but I'll list here only
a few-
The screen will now center on monitors larger than 14" The windows are not
movable, but at least you will not have to crane your neck if you have a 21"
monitor. I hope to eventually make it so the windows can be movable as well
but that would require a good bit of work and I have other priorities right
now.
Fixed some problems with bad loops in about 15 sounds. I HOPE that this was
the fundamental cause of the problem with the AV machines. Due to the special
sound chip they contain, It is my believe that this chip did not know how to
handle the error and would freeze. (That's my guess anyway)
Eliminated the "Theldrow" font from the menus and some portions of some
dialogs. I used it in a way that I was warned would cause problems and I just
didn't listen. The bugs it would cause finally convinced me to change it. (I
should have listened to Glenn G.)
The entire Realmz v1.3 package will follow sometime soon.

Greg's Browser v2.4 (3 August 1994) (c)1993-94 Gregory D. Landweber

Greg's Browser requires System 7 and Color QuickDraw. This version is
"Fat", containing both 680x0 and PowerPC native code for optimum
performance on Power Macs.
Do you think the Finder is too slow and clumsy when navigating through
your folder structure? Do you perhaps use a hierarchical Apple menu
utility but are tired of zigging and zagging your mouse from submenu
to submenu? Or maybe you just like color icons. If so then you should
try Greg's Browser. Displaying multiple folders in a single window,
Greg's Browser lets you simultaneously see the contents of a folder,
its parent, and a subfolder, providing a quick and easy way of moving
both up and down through your folder hierarchy. Greg's Browser can
also open StuffIt and Compact Pro archives, letting you browse into
them just like they were normal folders.
Greg's Browser takes advantage of the "Macintosh Drag and Drop" and
"Stuffit Engine" extensions. Mac D&D can be found at ftp.apple.com,
and the Engine comes with Aladdin's "DropStuff with Expander Enhancer",
version 3.5.1 of which is currently available at the usual ftp sites.

Subject: [R] Recommendations for a backup system please
Andy Law ([email protected]) wrote:
> I'm putting together a proposal for a Mac network backup system and would
> appreciate comments and experiences of others. The network is Ethernet based,
etc...
Short answer: I'd recommend tape unless you have special needs or are
rolling in money.
Long answer:
The primary requirement of backup is that it be redundant. Having one
backup is little better than having none- the idea is to recover from
accidents and mistakes, and the best bet for that is redundancy.
i.e.: if the backup fails the night before your boss trashes the
quarterly report, what's the worst case? The bottom line here is that
backup is to help protect you from errors and accidents, and you can't
assume that the process itself is free of them, or that they will
occur one at a time.
Of course there is another requirement here which is sort of implicit
in the redundancy one- it has to be *done*. This tends not to happen
if it is annoying (actually, anything less than painless) and/or
expensive. Think on this when designing a system.
To decide on media, you must carefully consider your backup needs and
resources. Here is one approach, one that I use. Of course, there are
others, probably mostly better
Start off with a statement like "I need to be able to recover from
2 major errors, losing data from no more than 1 week" (my typical
scenario). You may want several such statements, like "from 1 error
losing no more than 1 day" and "from 3 errors losing no more than 1
month". You should figure out how much data you will lose
if you have one problem, or two, or three, where "problem" includes
backup not run or failed, backup medium that you thought was okay
isn't readable anymore, disk crash, accidentally erased file, a fire
or flood, etc, etc. (of course a major deal like a fire or flood could
cause two or three such problems simultaeneously!). All of these
happen, the less spactacular ones tend to get less press but occur
more frequently (sorry I erased the hard drive by mistake...).
Analyzing these statements will give you an idea of how much data you
wish to keep on hand at any time. At a minimum it will be 3x the
total disk space, quite possibly much more. (3x = one global stashed
off site plus 2 incrementals alternating). Also consider that you
can use the same setup for archiving, which is not the same as backup;
it is generally tailored to storing things that you *know* you will
want to retrieve at some time. Archive data sets can be structured
much more logically than backup data sets, which makes it easier to
retrieve from them. I generally recommend archiving (redundant
copies!) of anything you haven't touched in a long time (for me, 6
months or so). I also recommend keeping at least one archival copy of
a global backup every month or so as a fallback, so you can find the
file that you thought you'd never need again (it would be lost forever
if you don't archive it and recycle backup media).
The net result is that in a typical situation, you may stash away each
month an amount of data that at least equals, or possibly exceeds by
several fold, the amount of hard drive space on your total system.
Also consider that the system may grow, and you may want to service 2x
to 10x or more the disk space in a year or two. So figure the cost
per gigabyte of your backup medium and then figure how much this is going
to cost per month.
Other considerations are the archival life of the medium, the ease and
speed of backup, and the ease and speed of recovery. In most cases,
the speed of backup is not that big a deal, since it runs at night and
on weekends; and the speed of recovery is not that big a deal, since
folks will be quite relieved to have it at all (of course there are
times when this is critical, but usually if you can get it in an hour
or two folks are quite happy). Ease of use depends more on the
software than the medium, but also consider how often you need to swap
media (i.e. the medium capacity) - more than once a day can be a
nuisance, and can be forgotten more easily. The MO hold 600MB which
may or may not be able to do a system global for you; the DAT holds
1.3-10 gig or more, depending on tape length and compression-
typically 2-5. Archival life I can't quote figures on offhand, sorry,
but you might want to think about it. It depends on storage
conditions for magnetic media. Optical lasts longer than magnetic; I
don't know where MO fits in.
There are other more arcane factors too: how much do drives cost and
how many will you have (in a big system, it isn't a bad idea to
dedicate one to recovery- I've had an adminstrator tell me that he
couldn't recover the data I lost in a crash because all the drives were
busy with backup
So consider: On cost alone, tape wins heavily: MO is around $300 per
gig, DAT is around $10. Think about it.... this buys you redundancy
and convenience. DAT's are also cheap enough to let you make an
archival tape of a set of data anytime you like without a second
thought, and keep it- just to be on the safe side; users who want to
can easily and cheaply get a copy of their project or disk and stash
it at home. There are other tape options too, this is just my
favorite. The drives are cheap and reliable, and the media is easily
available (but DON'T use audio-grade!).
Retrospect is a good choice, and the Remote option reduces the
administration problem compared to the slightly cheaper method of
using System 7 file sharing, and reminds folks not to turn off their
machines when a run is scheduled. The mostly-dedicated machine is a
good idea, since they are cheap (especially in comparison to data
loss), and there will be less tendancy for someone to turn off the
machine or leave some modal dialog up which prevents the run.
Hope this helps-

Subject: About Apple Color StyleWriter Pro
Greetings,
Well, we finally have our Apple Color StyleWriter Pro in the office
and have been able to play around with it for about a week. I must
admit that I'm pretty impressed so far. The printer itself is small and
relatively quiet, setting up the ink cartridges was very simple and
installing the driver software was also easy. The print quality is
excellent, colors and text both. All in all, a good printer at a good
price.
My test image was a picture of Jupiter that I found on the net
through Mosaic. The picture has areas of deep black and the colors of
the planet itself are rather muted, but with a fair amount of detail.
There is also a bit of text on the page. Draft mode is pretty cruddy,
as you would expect, but it is Draft after all. Normal mode is OK, but
there is a fair amount of streaking, particularly in the black areas.
Best quality is very good, there is almost no streaking, the details
in the planet show up well and the text is very crisp. But then I
tried the Emphasize Black setting. The solid black areas were even more
crisp and solid and the colors still looked great. There are
still quite a few settings that I haven't tried completely, but I'm
very satisfied with the image quality. By the way, I've also printed
a few transparencies with very good results, but the stock
is so expensive (~$1 per page) that I don't want to waste much. Printing
on regular copier paper wasn't bad, but the results are really much better
on the special inkjet paper.
Surprisingly, the printer worked easily across our building Ethernet.
I simply installed the driver on each computer that will be using the
printer and they all saw the printer hanging off the host computer
almost immediately. The only thing I have to make sure to do is to reset
the Chooser back to the LaserWriter after finishing. The text quality is
good, but the CSW is still slow compared to the LaserWriter.
Oh yeah, inside the box was an ad for something called StyleScript from
GDT Softworks which will supposedly allow us to print Postscript files
on the CSW. Has anyone heard of this package?

This is a utility I wrote for configuring the list of default applications
in Finder 7.0. Default applications are the ones used to open documents
of particular types, whose original creators can't be found; for example
Finder 7 comes configured as standard to allow you to open "TEXT" and "PICT"
files with TeachText.
There are other Finder-patching utilities around which can do the same
thing; what makes Default Application different is that it's a control
panel, so it's able to patch the running Finder without having to quit
and restart it, and without having to load INITs at boot time.

Bittco Ships Co-motion(TM), New Meeting Software
Ardrossan, Alberta, CANADA--04 August 94: From today, people who make
decisions with the input of a group, even groups separated by distance or
time, can collaborate with Co-motion, innovative and powerful groupware for
meetings on the Macintosh(R) from Bittco Solutions. Whatever the group,
Co-motion participants leave the meeting with better results, more results,
genuine consensus, and much more committed to decisions than with
traditional meetings.
With Co-motion, participants brainstorm and evaluate ideas in a shared,
real-time discussion on their computers. At the end of a session,
participants produce a report tailored to their needs that shows what the
group believes, what the group is shooting for, and even what the group
should do.
The real-time, multi-user technology of Co-motion energizes collaboration
as everyone talks at once and is heard. Compelling idea generation and
evaluation tools get everyone involved while refining the group's results.
"Whether you are next door or on another continent, linked up with Apple(R)
Remote Access, you can see everyone's ideas instantly and react," said
Shelly Hines, marketing, Bittco.
With instant access to comprehensive meeting results, people leave the
meeting ready to take actions and make decisions. Each participant in the
session can customize and produce an Official Co-motion Report. Co-motion
provides several options for organizing and prioritizing the ideas
generated and evaluated during a session.
Each copy of Co-motion includes host and participant capabilities.
"Hosting a Co-motion session is as easy as choosing New from the File
menu," said Dean Bittner, development, Bittco. "This is the new model of
meeting systems. Time and money will be saved as there are no expensive
server versions, minimal setup and training costs, and no administration
headaches." Bittco's test groups composed of inexperienced computer users
set up and were productive within 20 minutes.
"Our low pricing, full features, and ease of use separate us from existing
entrants in this product category," said Myrna Bittner, product management,
Bittco. "Whether your group consists of students working on a group
project, executives formulating strategic policy, or staff deciding on what
to serve at the company barbecue, Co-motion is an invaluable tool."

Subject: Control strip slowed down by word on PB540
Hello,
I have a brand new PB 540 and when running Word (5.0) on this machine I
encounter
some funny effects concerning the control strip functions. If I click on any of
the control strip buttons it takes up to 15 seconds until the menu appears. The
control strip is awfully slow. If I stratup another program in parallel to word
(e.g. MacDraw) and put word in the background and Macdrwa in the foreground the
control strip operates again at full speed. Also if switching to the finder
with
word in the background makes the control strip work normally. With Word in the
foreground also other system functions work similarly slow. E.g. if not typing
any
input to the machine for a while tha display light is turned off. It can be
reactivated by touching a key (e.g. shift-key) or movin the mouse. In that case
it
also takes 10 to 15 seconds until the light goes on.
What is causing problems here? Thanks for hints.

I think that means that Fetch couldn't find a "helper" application to post-

Subject: Good Mac Fax software?
Hi folks,
I've got a SupraFaxModem that came with some not-so-friendly
(to put it mildly!) fax software - FAXStf 2.23.
What I wind up doing when I need to fax is to move all non-Apple
extensions and CDEV out of the system folder, restart the Mac,
then install FAXStf. When I'm finished faxing, I immediately trash
all of the umpteen FAXStf-generated files that are now scattered
all over my hard drive. I then move all my extensions and CDEVs back
into the system folder, restart, and then I'm back in business.
I learned about this through bitter experience and uncounted
crashes!
All in all, after 10 years of using Macs, this has been my WORST
software experience. I hesitate to go near FAXStf 3.0 after my
previous experiences. I've also heard that Delrina's product is not
much better - is this true?
Can anyone out there in cyberspace recommend Fax software for the
Mac that is easy to use and reliable? Any help on this would be
greatly appreciated! There MUST be something better!

Well, my Supra was plug and play. I connect regularly at 9600 and 14,400,

The Comp-Sys-Mac-Comm FAQ seems to indicate that provided I use a hardware

I recently purchased a PowerMac 7100 with a GeoPort and modem software and

performed flawlessly as a modem and fax machine when I need it to be.
Now that Apple is releasing the Telephone Manager API with System 7.5,
does anyone know of any integrated telephony solution for the PowerMac?
For instance a piece of software that includes a fax manager, data modem
and answering -- sort of a home office deal.
I'm interested in whether a piece of software working in conjunction
with the Telephone Manager and the GeoPort can arbitrate between a fax
call and a voice call. So if I receive a fax call the fax monitor will
pickup it up and receive the fax transmission and if I get a voice
call, the software would fire up an answering machine type module
to handle a message and record to my hard disk.
If anyone knows of any software or hardware solutions out now (or
shortly to be announced) please e-mail me and if there is enough
response I'll summarize to info-mac.

It's not entirely clear to me if you are looking for the recently-uploaded
files themselves, or just these "recent-files" and "all-files" lists.
If the former: I suggest you ftp to a frequently-updated archive site, and
just look in the /rec folder (you can even view by date so as to easily
direct your attention to the newest files). Sure, some mirror sites are
old, but you can just avoid them. I use mrc.next.uiuc.edu and/or
nic.switch.ch, both of which tend to be updated within 12-24 hours after
sumex gets a new file.
If you feel you must read the file description before downloading anything
>From the archive, I suggest you wait for the descriptions to be published
in this digest, which usually happens within a few days after the file is
posted.
In any case, I don't think you need to wait months for the "recent-files"
list to be updated before using the archives.

Subject: PROB: Duo 280 and MS Mail
We've recently purchased several Mac Duo 280s and have been having
serious problems with MS Mail on all of them. The systems crash
consistently when printing from Mail. There have been other sporadic
crashes during Mail use, but printing is the most repeatable problem.
The crash results in either a "application unexpectedly quit..." message
(for mail) or a whole system freeze.
We've talked to Apple (1-800-SOS-APPL) and they tell us there shouldn't
be any problem.
Nothing we tried has resulted in a permanent fix.
Our internal help desk suggested an INIT conflict. We ran Conflict
Catcher with ambiguous results.
We then took one system aside and did a minimal install of the Duo System
7.1.1, adding MS Mail 3.1d client, and Ethernet software. We brought the
system up, launched multiple apps in addition to Mail, including TCP
apps, and were not able to cause the crash.
We then did a full Duo 7.1.1 System install, plus MS Mail 3.1d and all
the usual INITs. We could not crash this during limited testing. We
have applied this as a fix (reinstalling the system and mail sw) but the
results are inconsisent.
Norton Utilities and Disenfectant 3.5 have yeilded no insights.
We have never had a problem like this in the past. We have been running
several 230s and 210s without incident.
We would appreciate replies to [email protected]

Can anyone please give me some hints on how to overcome the problem. I am

I have a Radius Greyscale Pivot Monitor, about two years old, Model 0276,
running on a MacIIci using the Built-In video. Every thing has worked perfectly
until recently when the brightness level began to flicker. It is still
useable, but at times it will vary in brightness rapidly and at times will get
real dim and barely readable. I have checked all the cables and I am
using the most recent version of the Radius software.
It seems to be hardware related becasue it does this even if I start up
with all the extentions off!
The closest Radius authorized repair service os over two hundred miles
away and nobody arround here has any experience working on Pivot
monitors. They all want to ship the monitor back to Radius, but then I
won't have a monitor and I use the computer daily.
If anybody knows what I can tell a repair shop or if there is a simple
fix that I can do, I would be most grateful.

Subject: RAM disk [A]
When working with large files, saving to the RAM disk occurs
practically instantaneously. For you and your LCIII, that could be an
important issue. I suppose I also feel like I'm prolonging the life
of my hard drive by causing it to spin up less often. This may well be
wishfull thinking though.
Therefore, you enjoy a quantum improvement in the speed by which
common and routine saving-to-update chores are done. This performance
improvement comes with a risk. As the name implies, your file is held
in RAM which vanishes when powered down. I hope its obvious that if
you allocate some of your RAM to working as a disk it won't be
available to run applications, extensions and system software.
With RAM doubler, you may have plenty.
There are some shareware utilties that make using a RAM disk a bit
more easy and safe. RAM-disk-helper comes to mind. As I recall,
you can put aliases or copies of files into the helper folder
and those will be loaded into the RAM disk at startup. Should
there be a system crash and you restart _without_ powering down,
then any files held in RAM will be restored, even though you
hadn't saved just before the crash.

>Does such a system/product exist for the macintosh?
Yes. National Computer Systems (NCS) has two software products and a line of
scanners for OMR (optical mark reader) scanners. Designworks is an updated
version of FormPro, which NCS fairly recently aquired from Beach Tech
software. Beach Tech had been selling FormPro for about $750 academic.
FormPro worked with NCS and other brands of OMR scanners, but there were
sometimes reliability problems as FormPro prints the "skunk marks" and timing
marks on plain paper (heavier weight paper). NCS's DesignWorks now requires
that you use NCS blank forms (about a nickel each for an 8.5x11 inch sheet)
with preprinted timing marks. The forms are more reliable when the timing
marks are professionally typeset. DesignWorks is $1095 academic and is
reportedly a lot like FormPro with timing mark printing disabled and some of
the "bugs fixed."
ScanPro for Macintosh is also available from NCS. It lets you scan pre
designed NCS forms with an NCS scanner. I think it is still about $695 for
ScanPro.
NCS has not set pricing yet, but there is supposed to be an upgrade to
DesignWorks made available for FormPro owners.
With a dual reflective head NCS scanner, you can make decent-looking
2 sided scannable forms and program Designworks to scan the data in
a variety of ways. (Allowing for multiple responses, etc...)

Subject: Screen beep
Recently someone posted an extension to remove that stupid wake-up sound the
Mac makes after the monitor have been sleeping and you wake it. This is a
feature of the Energy Star monitors that you program with the Screen control
panel. I have found another way to stop that sound, while leaving the other
sounds on.
You create a short silent sound (1 second). You simply record nothing being
careful there is no background sound. Then you remove that sound from the
System by dragging it out of the System. It is explained in the System manual.
After that you use Resedit to remove the sound module from the Screen control
panel and replace it by the new silent sound. Be careful to give the silent
sound the same ID number so the Screen control panel will recognize the new
sound.
After that when the screen will wake up you will hear only silence. What a
nice feature from Apple. Why do we need a sound to tell us the screen is
waking up.

I just read the announcements in comp.sys.mac.announce regarding upgrades
for recent purchasers of Sys7.1, Sys7.1 Pro after June 2 ($39.99 &
$19.99), and any Mac (except the WGServers) after Aug 2 (free).
What I wanna know, is what is the status of recent purchasers of the
PowerMacintosh PDS Upgrade Card? Are they included in the program
somewhere? Doesn't that count as an 'Apple CPU'?
Also, the notice used specific part numbers for Sys7.1 & Sys7.1 Pro. Do
you also qualify for that upgrade deal ($39.99) if you bought a Mac cpu
(w/Sys7.1) between June 2 and Aug. 2?
What is the deal with those two situations? I talked on the phone to a

Does anybody know?

I have a couple of questions about System 7.5: I know it hasn't been
released yet, but I'm hoping some of you Mac-gurus will have some info
for me...
1. QuickDrawGX needs Adobe Type ManagerGX. Any word from Adobe when
that will be out, and what the upgrade cost will be?
2. It sounds like applications will have to be written to take
advantage of the new GX features... is it safe to assume that
applications in the wings, like MS Word 6.0 will be set to work with
GX? Are the modifications needed to use GX extreme? I mean, can I
expect an update to PageMaker 5.0a in a few weeks so it uses GX or
will it require an upgrade kind of thing (PageMaker 6)?
3. Will my old Adobe type 1 fonts take advantage of the features of GX
or will I have to get re-worked fonts, too?
Finally, the 8/2 press release for 7.5 says that QuickTime 2.0 will be
included, but the AppleFAX document (ask for 10343) says it includes
1.6.2. Actually, if you can, take a look at the AppleFAX... it talks
about other features not really discussed up till now (like
"windowshading").

Although you don't quite say so, I'm going to assume that your Mac is
connected to the Internet using MacTCP, and has a permanently-assigned IP
number.[*]
There are TCP talk clients for the Mac. Talk 1.1.1 is a full talk client,
that will let you initiate and receive talk sessions, and will notify you
when someone attempts to talk to your Mac. Talkd is a background-only
program that will alert you when someone attempts to talk to your Mac.
You can find these programs in the info-mac archives, in the comm/net folder.
Note that these programs will only respond to a talk request directed to
your Mac. The unix host is another machine entirely, and talk requests
directed at the Unix machine will not be received by your Mac. I do not
know of any way to "forward" a talk request; you will just have to tell
your correspondents to call your Mac.
Hope this helps!
[*] Sometimes Macs are connected to the Internet without having a
permenantly-assigned IP number; rather, the IP number is
dynamically-assigned at the time that a TCP session is opened. The
advantage of this approach is that allows a large number of Macs to share a
few IP numbers; the disadvantage is that no can know in advance what IP
number your Mac will have, since this will change all the time.
You can tell what kind of IP connection you have by looking in the MacTCP
control panel: if the "Manual" or "Server" buttons are pressed, then your
address is permanent; if the "Dynamic" button is pressed, then you do not
have a permanent IP number.

Subject: Video on the Q630? (Q)
[email protected] is confused by the recent Q630 reports,
and so was I!
The reports in the journals is a little confusing but it is cleared up in
the Hardware notes put out by Apple on the latest Developer CD (Aug 1994).
The Quadra 630 will work with the Apple 17" multisync monitor but only in
either 640 x 480 @ 75Hz refresh or 832 x 624 @ 75Hz so it looks like the
Apple 16" monitor.
The 16" to 17" monitor change is hype -- the tube sizes are IDENTICAL (this
is marketing at its best!). I had to measure the two monitor with a tape to
convince a collegue here that his 17" was just the same size as the 16"
monitors.
But the 17" monitor is multi-sync (640 x 480, 832 x 624, 1024 x 768 @ 75 Hz
-- it does the VGA and SVGA modes @ 60Hz too but who cares!). The 1024 x
768 @ 75 Hz mode looks great on this monitor but the 630 can't support
this.
The 630 pairs very nicely with the new Apple fs15, which is half the price
of the 17" monitor. The fs15 will do 832 x 624 @ 75Hz giving you 90 plus
dpi which is as small as I would want to go.
I think most of the decisions here are marketing. The 630 is the first
product of the entry-level systems division and it seems they don't want to
gut the higher end of the market too much.
My original plans for a 6100 + Apple 17" are changing into a Q630 + fs15
(as money considerations start to kick in). I'll move up to PPC with the
upgrade card and the logic board upgrade next year (I like the sound of a
6300!).

My apologies if the file was binhexed twice. I apologize for your wasted
effort. The drivers have been removed from the archives pending review by GCC
and the archive moderators. I became aware later that I had a typo in the
version number and that it should have been 4.1.2. There was no attempt on my

had much luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I find WWW over 14.4 quite useable IF you turn off automatic downloading of
picture. A faster machine receiving the info can relieve another
bottleneck.

Subject: WWW over dialup w/out TCP - yes, it's possible
Actually, you can use the web over a dialup line without TCP. There are vt
terminal based browsers which only use text. One is called Lynx. If you can
find it and install it on your dialup server, then you can do it.
Obviously it is not graphic. When graphics come up, it give you the option to
save them to a file, or just skip them. The interface is pretty good for vt -
you usually don't need anything other than the arrow keys.

Subject: XWindow from RS6000 to macintosh
I have an RS6000 and an XWindows program I have written which I need to provide
documentation for. I want to be able to output the windows to a floppy disc
then
used Applefile exchange to transfer them to my mac.
I have been using xwd to dump the windows, then writing the output to a dos
disc
and transfering to the mac. I am using the mac utility DispX/raster but the x11
fileselection box that pops up when I select X11 option cannot see the imported
file.
Does anyone have any ideas about what I am doing wrong or another was of
solving
the problem of Motif -> mac without MacX or some such software.
Thanks Richard Norreys
