Subject: [*] BatteryMinder2.0b5; a PowerBook battery utility

Thanks to many people who have used the beta versions of BatteryMinder,
this latest version addresses certain incompatibilities that cropped up
with docking stations (lost prefs) and screen dimming of color active
matrix screens. I am pretty sure it is now running on PB100s and Portables.

This version also hides the screen controls window when in the background
(thanks to Blair MacIntyre for this suggestion).

It has been tested so far on PB100, PB160, PB170, PB180c, PB230, PB280c

Quick Feature List:

- Screen Controls window for adjusting brightness (on all models) and
contrast (on Duo models)
- Backlight toggle between preset values depending on charger status
- Force Appletalk to load at startup, so that it is always available
- Make quiet the startup sound
- Toggle Appletalk, sound and modem on/off with button control
- Monitors battery voltage (on all PowerBooks) and watts (on Duo or later)
- Predict battery life with count up and count down timers
- User selectable status information conveniently displayed in menu
- Change screen color depth via BatteryMinder menu
- Open PowerBook Control Panel from menu or an option-click in
BatteryMinder window
- Open Sharing Setup Control Panel from menu or a control-click in
BatteryMinder window
- Put your PowerBook to sleep with a double-click in BatteryMinder window

Subject: [*] Buud; a HypercCard based game

"Buuud" is part one of "The Buuud Adventures". Buuud was conceptualized
in mid-August, 1994, by Jeff "Cisco" Rau and Andrea "I Have No Crafty
Nickname" Hakari. The original setup was a series of aliases and more
commands set up in Cisco's account, but the entire game was converted
to a Hypercard 2.0 stack the very next day (or later that same day,
depending on how you look at things). Buuud will hopefully be
experiencing further adventures on the lovely St. Olaf campus in the future!

"Buuud" is a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-type game, written as a
Hypercard 2.0 stack on a Mac SE which doesn't have System 7 (I think
it's System 6.0.7, but don't quote me on that). If you have any
questions/comments/suggestions, email Cisco at [email protected] or
Andrea at [email protected]. Yeah, we know there are some typos,
those will be fixed in later versions.

Knock yourself out!

>From the boring old black and white, and in style too!

Simply drag your 'Debugger Prefs' file in the System Folder onto
this application (or start it up and choose the file), and then
edit the colors in the subsequent dialog, and save. That's it!

This of course requires that you have MacsBug (Apple's development

Please let me know if you use it, and have fun!

Subject: [*] DX7 Librarian 1.1.0; a MIDI data librarian

DX7 Librarian is an application for the Macintosh which allows you
to make up library of voice data for DX7. One window has one voice
data, and you can open windows as many as you want.
When this application receives bulk dump MIDI data, new window will
open and show you it's parameter. You can keep 32 voices in one file,
so it's easy to replace DX7's internal 32 voices.
Apple Script recordable.

What's changed in 1.1.0:
Become "Fat Binary". Runs native on Power Mac.
Remember "Ignore 1Voice", "Send When Changed" status and connections
on PatchBay, if you have UnProtect file.
Fixed window rewrite problem after opening envelope/kbd_scale dialog.

Subject: [*] English is Tough Stuff; a speech exercise

Here's a text file which is perfect for those of you wishing to give
Macintalk a workout. I recommend trying to read it out loud first. You
may find that Macintalk has an easier time of it than you do.

I got this from a friend at work. We have many people from international
destinations, including Holland, England, Croatia, France, China and more.
This is a prime example of how difficult English was for them to learn.

Open it in SimpleText on a machine with the latest Macintalk installed (for
those of you with Developer CDs, 1.2.1 is on the August CD) and have it
speak this in various voices. There are a handful of words it
mispronounces, but on the whole it does a lot better than most people
around my work. ;)

A sample is:

Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.

It's vicious stuff.

Subject: [*] FileMaker Pro 2.1v3 Updater; a flat database application

I found this on the ftp.claris.com anon FTP site. I did not see anything in
the documentation which would prohibit sending this off to the archives.

It is a binhexed StuffIt! 3.0 archive.

Here's a rundown of what's new-

This Updater is for U.S. versions ONLY. If you have an International version,
please call the Claris Fulfillment Center nearest you.

The updater combines your original FileMaker Pro 2.0 or 2.1 Mac version with a
list of changes and creates a new, completely up-to-date 2.1v3 application.

The following summarizes the fixes and feature enhancements made to FileMaker
Pro 2.1v3 program:

*Faster application launching on AppleTalk networks with a large number of
zones

*Significantly faster AppleScript searches using a whose clause

*Eliminating the generation of an incorrect option to edit paper sizes in
the print dialog of an HP Deskwriter

*Correcting inconsistent results in calculations using the Round function

* Guests using FileMaker Pro 2.1v3 will experience performance increases
in several networking operations when FileMaker files are being hosted by
Claris' FileMaker Pro Server product. See your local dealer or Contact
Claris at (408) 727-8227 for more information about FileMaker Pro Server.

* The following Import feature was added:
- A new Match Fields button was added to the Import Mapping dialog box for
same version FileMaker Pro to FileMaker Pro import operations. The button
aligns fields in the source and target files when their names match and
enables import for fields of compatible types.

* A hidden feature has been added to FileMaker Pro 2.1v3 and FileMaker Pro
SDK to enable a text field to flow across page boundaries without being
split at the page break. To access this feature, hold down the Option
key (Mac) or Shift Key (Windows) as you select the Layout Options menu item.
A new checkbox "New Break" will appear. By selecting this, the alternate
method of handling text across page breaks will be turned on for the current
layout. This feature is NOT GUARANTEED to solve all text flow problems but
has shown improvements with text clipping problems in specific cases.
It may potentially cause other problems, particularly on layouts with
sliding objects, so use it only as a last resort.

Subject: [*] MyBattery 2.2.5; a PowerBook battery utility

MyBattery is the essential battery monitoring tool for Macintosh notebook
owners! David Pogue of MacWorld loved its "super-cool fuel gauge." MyBattery
features include:

* A variety of graphical displays of current battery voltage, such as bar
graph, "gas gauge", and line plot (voltage vs time) displays.
* Accurately estimates how much battery life remaining - and it "learns" to
adjust the estimate to be more accurate for your particular PowerBook.
* Multiple battery support.
* User-configurable menu bar displays.
* Color & grayscale support.
* Status indicators for AppleTalk, CPU speed, internal modem, and charger.
* Battery charger status (hi-charge, lo-charge, running off internal
battery).
* Compatible with any portable Macintosh that supports the Power Manager
(Macintosh Portable, all PowerBooks, Duo's, etc.).
* Compatible with System 6.0.8 or later (System 7.x friendly).
* Stand-alone application, for minimum conflicts and maximum RAM flexibility.

The next major release of MyBattery is under development, but there was one
annoying but not fatal bug that I wanted to fix now (which could garble the
preferences dialog). MyBattery 2.2.5 also adds the internal drive status
display for the menu bar.

To fully activate the historical estimation feature and some display options,
you must register your copy of MyBattery. Suggested fee is $10; see enclosed
documentation for further info.

Well, I finally got around to doing this one. Thanks go out to Gilbert
Green at Cornell Medical School for the suggestions (and the shareware
fees!).

It's a replacement for the Styles app. It gives you more font, sizes,
styles and pen widths. It also has some quick text functions; Uppercase,
Lowercase and Capitalize.

It's $15 Shareware.

It's suggested than you install this app internally. It's not necessary,
but it will consume a bit less heap space that way. For those of you with
really overloaded MP0/100 machines, sorry if it takes too much heap space.
Overriding a built-in app get's kind of tricky.

Give it a try and GET BACK TO ME with bug reports and/or suggestions.

Subject: [C] TeX on the Mac, Comments on 3 shareware packages

Here's my own irreverent comments about three shareware
implementations of TeX for the Macintosh OS. I make no
recommendations as to which one is better. I'm trying to
select one for myself and thought this would help some other
folks as well. I found versions of these three packages on
some combination of midway.uchicago.edu or ftp.shsu.edu by
anonymous ftp.

Remember, these comments do not come from the leaders of
any of the former Soviet republics.

--------- cut here --------

Initial thing to wish for in any TeX installation:

Rather than install each new macro package for TeX in some
general folder (e.g., "...copy all the .sty files into the
TeX-inputs folder..."), I suggest/request that programs
allow aliases of the various _and_ _appropriate_ folders to
be placed in some general location (e.g., "... place an
alias to the folder `styles' in the TeX-inputs folder...").
Then, the TeX configuration is instructed to search
recursively through all subdirectories in TeX-inputs. A
headache for some programmers but a godsend for people who,
in the future, may want to _completely_ remove a TeX package
(for instance, in graduation from RevTeX v2 to v3).

OzTeX: shareware registration fee $30

OzTeX is a standalone application for the compilation of TeX
documents. Nice one-piece package. Needs very little
maintenance, once it has been installed. (True for most TeX
packages). Good integration for writing documents. No
support for missing fonts other than to go find them
somewhere and then install them. Version 1.7 has good
support for the text editor Alpha v5.91. BibTeX and
MakeIndex are also not part of the OzTeX application.
However, standalone programs are supplied to do both of
these functions. They work fine.

BTW, Alpha is a _great_ program for editing TeX and LaTeX
documents. Even though BBEdit Lite comes with the OzTeX
package, I prefer the Alpha for the LaTeX macro packages
supplied by Tom Scavo. Alpha is shareware for $25.

CMacTeX: shareware registration fee $25

CMacTeX is a suite of standalone applications for the
compilation of TeX documents. The members of the suite
interact with each other using AppleEvents and a
configuration file in System_Folder:Preferences. Seems to
be good integration into the Mac OS. Haven't used it much
yet so these comments aren't official. CMacTeX might have
the edge over OzTeX because it includes Metafont support.
However, CMacTeX does not want to cooperate nicely with
Alpha (text editor). More comments after I use it for a
while. Does not include MakeIndex or BibTeX. Presume that
one could use the same versions that were supplied with
OzTeX.

DirectTeX: shareware registration fee $100

DirectTeX is a suite of MPW tools and scripts for the
compilation of TeX documents. Installation very easy.
Configuration also is simple. Appears to be the most direct
implementation of TeX on the Mac since it utilizes a command
line environment (MPW). That comes at the price of having
to use MPW. Not a big deal if you already have it. Not so
easy for non-Mac users, though. (Yes, some DOS people
occasionally use my Mac to print their .DVI files since
their DOS box is not networked to a printer. They can learn
simple MPW.) Alpha editor is not optimal for DirectTeX.
(Why have two editors open at once?) Will some nice person
develop some LaTeX macros for MPW similar to Tom Scavo's macros
for Alpha?

A couple of our disk drives died and were old enough that the mfr was

Here's the trick for turning plain PostScript files into EPS files. It does
*not* create a preview.

Open the .ps file using a text editor. A programming editor such as BBEdit
or the MPW editor works best. (If you try to open a PostScript file using
Microsoft Word you will probably find that Word is too smart for its own
good: it tries to insert the PostScript as a picture rather than letting
you edit the file itself. You can defeat this intelligent-but-stupid
behavior by temporarily moving Word's "EPS-TIFF-PICT" file out of the
"Word Commands" folder to somewhere where Word will not look for it.)

Once the file is open for editing, make these 3 changes:

1) change the first line:

%!PS-Adobe-0.0 becomes %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0

2) add a second line for bounding box coordinates in this order:
lowerleft X, lowerleft Y, upperright X, upperright Y

%%BoundingBox: 108 250 540 600

You may have to do some guessing at what the proper coordinates should
be. They are specified in points (1/72 inch), with 0 0 0 0 at the lower
left corner of the page.

3) remove "showpage" command line at (or near) the end of the file.

That's all there is to it. You can change the file type to 'EPSF' using
your favorite type-changing utility, if you like.

Good luck,

Had a friend with this problem and we never satisfactorily
solved it with the latest HP DW drivers. When we went
back a few versions (v3 or v4, I forget now), that one
seemed to work. Earliest version of the HP DW did not come
with AppleTalk (Hey, revolutionary idea!). Seems to be

Turn file sharing on via the Sharing Setup control panel on the Performa (after

window. (If the Plus is missing this icon, you'll need to "custom" install the
"workstation software" from the 6.0.7 System disks.) The Performa HD will
appear
on the desktop of the Plus and you can drag the files from the Ehman drive to
the Performa drive as tho the Performa drive was connected to the Plus' SCSI
chain! It won't be any too fast, mind you, but it takes *much* less time than
using floppies or trying to coax the Performa into recognizing your
(relatively)
ancient Ehman drivers.

Party on.

I just thought I ought to report back to everyone on this subject.

ps2eps, a unix based utility, was the overwhelming choice of those who sent

The few Mac based solutions mentioned were limited to commercial software,

I wonder if any PS gurus out there can help with this problem
we're having. We have a PS file which we'd like to output to
a Linotronic imagesetter. The PS file prints just fine when
downloaded to a conventional PS printer. When downloaded to
the imagesetter, nothing appears, not even an error message.

The PostScript file in question was generated by OzTeX and
includes many embedded EPS graphics, which were created under
System 6. We don't have problems printing these under System 7
because the System 6 Laserprep preamble has been manually
tacked on at the start of the PS file.

Any leads anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. I
should say that we don't own the imagesetter in question,

1) For doing almost everything with graphics:

Grafikkonverter (by Thorsten Lemke)
+++++++++++++++
The Grafikkonverter opens and saves graphic-files of many different
graphical formats. The program offers a lot of facilities to manipulate
pictures. Here is a (not exhaustive) list of the facilities: Scaling, color
reduction, dithering, painting tools.
Also, a multifile-conversion feature is available, which allows you
to select several graphic files for doing the same operations on
them, which may be (for example) scaling, saving in another format,
generating preview pictures and custom Finder icons,... . The
multifile-conversion may be even used for doing some common text conversion
operations. Further feature: Slide show of all graphic files located within
a selected folder and (optionally) all subfolders.

2) My favourate Keyboard Macro Utility:

KeyQuencer (by Alessandro Levi Montalcini)
++++++++++
Make for a frequently needed sequence of keystrokes, which you have to
type, a macro and assign it to a single keystroke-combination. Several
extension are available for doing special operations, such as: switching to
another specific application or launching or quitting one, opening any file
just like it may be done by the Finder, some basic clipboard editing, using
up to 10 clipboards simultanously, typing the current date/time, and much
more. A programmers interface is provided which allows you to create
additional KeyQuencer extensions.

3) My favourate Network Utility:

Anarchie (by Peter N Lewis)

A great FTP-Client (for downloading files) and Archie-Client utility. Many

AppleScriptable - using Applescript you are able to download and upload

determining the transfer mode (text or binary) and for setting the
creator/type of a downloaded file.

From: [email protected] (Richard Hatch)
Subject: Refilling HP Deskjet HIGH CAPACITY Cartridges
I've read quite a bit about refilling HP Deskjet and other cartridges and
have successfully refilled a number myself. But when I tried to refill
one
of the new High Capacity cartridges, I found several differences. First,
the case is somewhat transparent, so you can see that there's no sponge
inside, just an empty well. Second, when I put the ink in, the thing
leaked
like a sieve. Although not ALL the ink leaked back out, a large amount
did, and the seeping never seemed to stop. After about half an hour, it
would still get a drip on the bottom when I picked it up.
So either HP has successfully stopped us from refilling or else there's
some new technique for it that I haven't read about. I used a
hypodermic/ink set that came from Computer Friends in Portland, OR.
When you insert the needle, you can see it spraying ink into the
cartridge.
I don't remember that being true when I refilled the regular size
cartridges.

From: [email protected] (Greg Trimper)
Subject: Refilling HP Double Capacity Ink Cartridges
Refilling HP Double Capacity Cartridges.
If anyone has refilled the normal HP Ink cartridges, you know how easy and
reliable the procedure can be. Well, I purchased one of the Double Capacity
cartridges after a normal cart that I had refilled 10 times physically died.
This was, to say the least, an adventure.
Took the empty cartridge out. Noticed the case is a smoky clear plastic
- it
appeared to be the normal black when full, due to the ink. Inside, I could
see two air filled plastic pouches, one on either side. On top, there
are two
sealed openings: one on the upper left corner, and one in the center. Here
is where it gets fun. The left hand pouch is connected to the upper left
hole - puncture the left hole, the left pouch deflates. The right hand pouch
is attached to the center hole. Puncture the center hole, it deflates. Big
deal, right? Well, puncture either hole, start filling it with ink.
Look at
your hands (and pants, and the table that you forgot to cover with a towel,
as you were really comfortable with refilling the old catridges). On the
bottom of the cart there is a circular inset, it has a spiral tube and a hole
to the outside. If you puncture either bag, the ink comes out that hole in
the bottom. HP has a message for you: RWe overengineer our ink
cartridges to
INSURE that you canUt refill them.S
Ha! But you can. FIRST, before you do anything, take the empty cart, and
clean it up. Take some gel superglue, and fill in the little indent/hole on
the bottom. Put some strong, clear, thin packing tape over that. NOW, and
only after sealing that hole, carefully punch a needle through the left hand
hole. The plastic plug will probably fall in. No big deal, the convienent,
now airless, plastic pouch will retain it. Fill the cart with ink. Take
some soft poster tack or putty and clog the hole - it needs to be airtight.
You are now the proud possessor of a refilled Double capacity ink cartridge.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU SEAL THAT BOTTOM HOLE!
This is an extremely dirty, expensive, and useless trick by HP. This is the
first time that I have NOT been completely pleased with an HP product. I am
going to make a call to them tommorow with my ink-stained fingers, which are
typing this message now.

I've just bought a "demo" model of an LC475 and I have two questions
about it:

(a) it has a ROM slot right next to the two VRAM slots. Comparing
with the mother board of a newer Quadra 605, I notice that this slot
is now gone on the 605 but that the pin-holes where the slot once was
are still on the board. My question is is this ROM slot in the 475
useful for anything (e.g. upgrades to the ROM) or is it a "vestige" of
the early production models of the LC475.

(b) on power-up it seems to "double-declutch": first the "ping", then
the disk-spin up then a video "flash", then a disk *slowdown*, then a
disk-spin up again, then a boot. Anything to worry about? (MacCheck
is happy).

Yes. I believe PC CD_ROM's are formatted using the ISO 9660 format, which
means that a Mac CD_ROM drive could mount and read the disk.

However, the _software_ on the CD_ROM may well be IBM-only. This means you
could only use the CD_ROM with an emulator (such as SoftPC or SoftWindows).

I realize there is ZipIt (shareware), however, it hasn't always been able to

FWIW, Stuffit Deluxe (I'm running 3.0.7) does a nice job with zip files, and
in the bargain does just about every other conversion you can name. I had
a couple of DOS zip files the other day I couldn't unzip with three different

The only catch is that Stuffit only unzips; it doesn't zip.

It's not the cheapest solution, but it works well and saves having to

Subject: RAM Doubler (C)

There have been a lot of comments about RAM Doubler here lately. I
recently had some problems with my PowerBook 165 that ultimately seem to
have been associated with RAM Doubler (not the same thing as "caused
by"). I've solved those problems and been in touch with Connectix and
thought I might share my experience & information with those on the list.

The problem I was having was that programs were crashing or hanging the
PowerBook with some regularity, especially when I tried to move from one
open application to another. Since I use mostly Claris software, at first
I began to suspect that it had something to do with a conflict between
the applications themselves and I contacted Claris. Not so. The source of
the problem was that 32-BIT ADDRESSING WAS TURNED OFF in the Memory
control panel. When I turned on 32-bit addressing, the problems
disappeared.

I spoke with Connectix and they confirmed that this was very possibly the
source of the problem I'd been having. I'm not sure whether I was using
RAM 1.0.3 or 1.0.4; Connectix said that 1.0.3 was especially prone to
this mistake. It was a mistake, because RD was not supposed to crash in
24-bit mode when the Mac had only 4Mb of physical RAM installed (my
situation). But because of a bug in the earlier versions of RD, sometimes
it did.

Two solutions: first, turn 32-bit addressing on (which I finally figured
out on my own); second, update to 1.5. I've had 1.5 on my Powerbook for a
couple of days now and so far not a single problem.

Those of us with ether connections who wish to network to other

if we're hooked into an EtherTalk net we can't simultaneously access our
own LocalTalk printers (lasers, etc). I posted a query to this list about
this problem a month or so ago and received a number of responses (and I
thank all who did respond), the gist of which is that one needs to buy an

A spendy solution to what I believe is a dumb decision on Apple's part.
Apple Tech Assistance even recommended EtherWave or their own Apple
Internet Router (@ $500+). Thanks loads, Apple.

Well, it turns out that there's a software solution, LocalPath, from
Farallon, and it works like a charm. It seems to patch around the Apple
misconception, allowing one to run EtherTalk and LocalTalk at the same
time. It creates a LocalTalk stub appended to an ether-connected Mac, and
the printer looks just like any Ether-Talked printer to other macs. Nice
stuff! My congrads to Farallon on this, and it's a bargain at about $90 for
academics.

I have no connection to Farallon.

Subject: Sticky Mouse Syndrome

I'm sure this question has been discussed before at length, but I can't find
the
answer in any FAQs or back issues of the Digest.

I am experiencing the so-called Sticky Mouse syndrome on my Centris 650. Very
infrequently, when I click-and-release the mouse button, it remains
electrically
in the down state, even though I've completely let go of it. This also used to
happen once in a while when I had an SE/30.

This mouse is an Apple Desktop Bus Mouse II, Family No. M2706, serial number
MB3186T6T18.

Is sticky mouse syndrome hardware or software related, and what can I do to fix
it?

Thanks,
Barry S. Rein

Here is a summary of replies to my "Norton 2.0 vs 3.0" posting:

How much memory did Speed Disk have assigned to it?

just increase the application memory in the get info dialog for the
speeddisk application and it will work ! 2.0.6 is the most recent I saw.

I'm fairly certain that this is not a problem with 3.0 but it's not due to
the number of files but to a record keeping problem. Did Disk Dr. or
Apple's Disk First Aid show up any problems with the drive? If not, you
may still want to backup and reformat the drive as a
precautionary/preventative maintance procedure.

[Reply: DD and Disk First aid *did* show problems, but both claimed to
have fixed them. Stephen Zeffren then said:]

If all utility programs say that the problem is fixed but it shows up
again several days later, then there is either a weak sector on the disk
(that is not able to hold the correct information over time) or the damage
is occuring due to crashes, lockups or freezes. If you are experiencing
these types of problems, then misinformation in the catalog btree header
is not uncommon. If you're not having problems, then backing up and
reformatting may be a good idea.

[Crashes are all too common, in my experience - but this is a likely
source of the recurring disk corruption. Yet another backup, reformat and
restore seems in order.]

Stephen later added: Wish there had been an easier solution but
sometimes, there's just no utility program that will fix the problem. :(

Subject: Sys 6, MacX and screensavers

I've just gotten MacX 1.1.7 running on sys 6.0.8, and now my
screen-saver (Pyro) doesn't engage when i'd expect it to (i.e., after
five minutes, as it normally does).

I think this is because of having MacX running.

anyone else ecnounter and solve this? I can engage it by using the
"sleep now" corner, but that's not what I want. is there another
screen-saver I should switch to?

please reply direct.

I've heard that JLK is not compatible with System 7.5. True? Does anyone know
what Apple plans to do about this?

Subject: The Macs 1.0b6

Hi,

Does anyone know what the most recent version of The Macs is and where I
can get it. Sumex has The Macs 1.0b6, but the program tells me it is
expired, and I believe him.

The Macs is a program with lost of information of all old Macintosh
models. Is there an other program (or file) with this kind of information?
I am mostly interested in (speedometer-)speeds.

Several folks responded to my call for help (thanks, y'all :-) A couple
suggested I use Transparency, which I promptly downloaded and will try
very soon. If you're interested, Transparency is available from

Subject: URL: pronunciation of acronym??

I recently referred to an "URL" listing in conversation, and pronounced the
term as "earl"

my mac-savvy listener had never heard that before; he'd always said U-R-L.

Does anyone else call an URL an "earl" in speech??
