Subject: [*] WhoAmI? version 0.91; reminds your Mac of its identity
System 7.5 won't tell you what sort of Mac you are using. This is because
Apple stripped out the identification resources. This application will put
them in. This was written as a run-it-once-and-forget-it application
rather than an extension because extensions are black magic, and do you
really want to add yet another one to your overflowing Extensions folder?
This is version 0.91 which just adds a few more machines to the list of
those that were previously represented. No big change, really.
Please read the information file, and keep a copy of your original System
file. This program has been pretty well tested, albeit not exhaustively
so. Procede with caution. I haven't had any problems yet...

Subject: [*] Word 6 Windows & Mac to Word 5 converter
This is a new version of the convertor from Word 6 Windows & Mac to Word 5.x
Mac. It replaces an earlier version created 3/19/94 and posted last spring
on a number of Internet sites, which did not work. Put this translator in
the Word Commands folder. The translator may not work if you have changed
some of Word's default header 1, 2, ... styles. If you have made changes to
these styles, you may get part way through the conversion and then Word will
quit with a Type 1 error, or the computer will freeze up, or will get a bomb
and a bad F-line error message. To eliminate these problems, if you have
modified any of the heading 1, 2, etc. styles, you must also give them
aliases, e.g., if you have modified style heading 8, rename it heading 8, h8,
and put this style in the default style sheet.

I've just purchased a new Apple Color StyleWriter 2400 for my wife to use
in home-business flyers, product labels, etc.... In general, I'm pleased
with the thing, excellent quality print, speed is good, price was right.
My only problem is that it's print driver insists on turning "off" the
ColorSync matching on each new document... there is no way to tell the
software that I want ColorSync "on" by default. (Yes, some of her
applications can store default-documents that include printer settings.
But many do not allow this.)
I realise this is new on the market, but can anyone out there tell me:
1) Why would the ColorSync default be "OFF"? (academic)
2) How can I change it to "ON"?

I am using Network Time, available under comm/tcp/network-time in the SUMEX

list of time servers is in the docs). You can set it so that it
automatically calls the time server at specified intervals, and yields

Subject Apple Event Disconnect from ARA... 25.10.1994

Ok you network gurus out there, I've got a REALLY tough one for you:
We have an ARA "client" computer (running LabVIEW) which is supposed to dial
up a remote "server" mac at 2 am and download a file every day (data collected
during the previous 24 hours). I've got it so that by opening a file from
within LabVIEW programmatically, ARA starts up the connection (and then ARA
itself quits).
The problem is that there doesn't seem to be anyway to DISconnect from ARA
programmatically. Normally Remote Access Disconnection (written by Milton Wan
of Apple- if anyone has his e-mail address I'd be MOST grateful) would do the
job (I could start it from within LabVIEW using an Apple Event Open Finder
file) but the silly program puts up an "Are you sure..." dialog and you HAVE
to click on the Yes button (can't even hit return). Basically what I need is
either this program without the dialog box or some C code to close the
connection (note that an Apple Event to ARA to disconnect is also not possible
since ARA Client is no longer running at that point).
If anyone has any ideas as to how I can disconnect ARA without human
intervention (and, no, setting a time limit for the log in is not sufficient)
I would eternally indebted!
Much thanks in advance,

HELP!
I work for a in house television studio at a University. We are currently
usinga
Macintosh SE to run teleprompter software. The SE was outfitted with the
extra port so it could support an external monitor. It works great.
The problem is that we need another monitor for the system and cannot find one
that will work. The monitor we are using is odd. It is called a Mac-Larger
monitor, so named because it allowed users to have a larger monitor(I guess
thats obvious). There were very few of them made and even the company that
we purchased it through years ago doesn't know how to get one today.
We need this particular monitor because current Mac monitors are not compatible
. Anyone have a MacLarger hiding in the closet? Any idea of someone else
who has one. Please e-mail me!

that I had been experiencing severe slow downs when my Quadra 700

nasty. Finder drawing slowed to a crawl, launching and switching
applications took forever, etc.
It took some sleuthing, but I believe that I've found the source of the
problem. It turns out that one of the After Dark modules that Now
Software's FunScreenSavers runs is the culprit. Turning off FunScreenSaver
clears the problem.
I'm not sure which module it is (I have about 100 loaded) and it
will probably take some time to pinpoint it. However, for those
who may also be experiencing slows downs after idle periods check
your screen saver modules. One could be doing something nasty to
your Mac also.

In the Unix flavor of NCSA Mosaic (can't speak for the Mac version--
I've trashed it), there is a "Mail to..." button on the Hotlist

I wouldn't recommend using TimesTwo under any system. The software is buggy
and can lead to data loss. I suspect the problems is that the TimesTwo
driver is not quite compatible with System 7.5. One of the processes (if I
remember correctly) when installing 7.5 is to update your hard drive
driver. I'm not exactly sure of the problems between System 7.5 and
TimesTwo, but they could eventually lead to data loss. Last time I checked,
Golden Triangle had 4 employees and their main tech support person was
going to Aldus to do tech support.
Bottom line...remove TimesTwo and use a better supported product. I
personally recommend Stuffit SpaceSaver as I haven't had a problem with it
and works very, very well. The speed degredation with SpaceSaver is
significantly less than TimesTwo, because you can selectively choose what
to compress.
I worked for Golden Triangle last summer doing tech support, but no longer
have any connection to them. Also, my only connection to Aladdin is being a
very satisfied customer.
If anyone has further questions about TimesTwo, please send me email.

[disappearing tables bug in WordPerfect 3.0]
I had the same weird behavior occasionally with the US version of WP 3.0a.
Sometimes it would be fixed simply by closing and reopening the file or
even just the print preview window. I agree it was pretty irritating.
Although I don't use the French version, from what I can tell so far from a
month of using the US version of WordPerfect 3.1, this bug no longer seems
to exist.
In general, version 3.1 is a MAJOR improvement over 3.0. Much, much more
stable and much faster and smoother. [still not as zippy as Nisus, but
then, what is? Oh yeah, WriteNow...
feature improvements. I recommend upgrading.

I've just started playing with Mosaic Netscape from Mosaic Communications
Corporation. The client is being distributed free for Macs, Win/PCs, and
a variety of Unix/X platforms for individual, acedemic, and research use.
However, "Commercial users can purchase supported, licensed copies of
Mosaic Netscape directly from Mosaic Communications. Pricing starts at
[US]$99 per user." The current client is labelled "0.9 beta", and the
final version of the navigator, due out in November, will (also) be on
Internet for free downloading. (All of this is from their own on-line
news release.)
I've had no trouble with the beta so far, but not much time on it yet.
It does seem considerably nicer than NCSA Mosaic... faster... JPEG/GIF
support built-in... faster... hierarchical hotlist... faster.... other
niceties too numerous to mention. And it's faster.
I've got the Mac version at home. Can't speak for the PC or Unix
variants, nor compare with other Mac clients except NCSA's. However...
it is certainly worth your time to look it over.
It may be best to start with:
http://home.mcom.com/home/faq_docs/faq_client.html
and go from there.

In TidBITS#248, Adam Engst says that Mosaic Netscape, from Mosaic
Communications and available from
http://mosaic.mcom.com/
ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/net/infosys/M ... scape/mac/
is worth checking out.
