Subject: [*] ab Fractal; generates fractal images
The attached file was compacted by Stuffit Lite v 3.0.7. It includes a
shareware Macintosh application and sample files.
The readme file follows:
ab Fractal should interest both the artistically and mathematically
inclined. Use it to generate and to analyze color images of fractals from
Julia and Mandelbrot sets. Features include numerous parameter options,
flexible coloring, integrated display of details, and built-in
documentation and examples. System requirements are 68020 or better, Color
Quickdraw, and a FPU. The archived copy should include the program and
sample fractal files.

Subject: [*] AutoCat 1.0.2; catalogs floppies
AutoCat is a control panel that automatically catalogs your
floppy disks when they are ejected. With AutoCat, you only have
to write the name of your disks on their label. To find a file,
you can uses the "Find..." command from the Finder as if your
file was on your hard disk.
How does AutoCat catalog disks ?
While you eject a disk, AutoCat creates a folder (with the same
name as your disk and with a customized AutoCat icon). It puts
in this folder aliases of all the files of the disk. AutoCat
maintains the hierarchy of your floppy disk : it copies folders
of the disk and, instead of copying files, makes aliases and
puts them in their folders.

Subject: [*] Exercise Log 1.14; keeps a log for you
Exercise Log is a Hypercard-based activities log that lets you store
information about each workout you do in an unlimited number of sports.
It offers an attractive and useful middle ground between paper-based logs
(in which you have to do all the tallying, etc. yourself) and spread-sheet
models (which tend to be too rigid for free-form information entry).
For each workout, there are fields for date, sport, workout-type, effort,
distance, time, pace, course-name, details, comments, pulse, weight, weather,
and equipment used (shoes, inline skates, bike equipment, etc.), including
a separate provision for warmup equipment (and distance and time).
The log will automatically calculate pace, and total distances, time spent,
and number of workouts in a week or year-to-date.

Subject: [*] fullwrite-201-updater; a word processor
The initial release of FullWrite 2.0 has an incompatibility with
System 7.5. Unfortunately for us, Apple broke one of the cardinal
rules that they set way back in the days of the MacPlus and it
bit us. We have isolated the problem and prepared an updater
that will fix the problem. This updater is attached below in
BinHex format. To use the converter you will need to convert it
with a program that can read .hqx files and then unstuff it with
StuffIt or a compatible program.
Depending on your system configuration, this problem could
manifest itself as:
- the Windows Menu extension failing to work;
- a crash or non-operation when accessing Spell Checking or Thesaurus;
- a crash when accessing the Picture extension;
- a crash on boot, whether or not FullWrite extensions were loaded;
- and, on some systems, there is no apparent problem.
If you have System 7.5, you MUST use this updater to update your
copy of FullWrite to 2.0.1. You should do this even if you have
not experienced any problems. Aside from this one bug fix,
FullWrite 2.0.1 is identical to FullWrite 2.0.
You should also use the updater now if you plan to upgrade to
System 7.5 in the future, although the updater will not affect
how FullWrite operates on pre-7.5 systems.
The updater may be freely distributed provided it is not modified
and this description is included with it.
We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

Subject: [*] Hypercard 2.2 AppleScript Dictionary
OK, I'm AppleScripting in Hypercard 2.2 and I keep typing "cd fld" and getting
syntax errors. I decided to fix Hypercard's aete to remedy this problem. In
the process, I also fixed a problem with the AppleScript Sript Editor's
dictionary window (only in Hypercard's case though).
First off, you can specify shorthand for AppleScript elements simply by
including all the various items in the aete. Hypercard has "bkgnd", "bkgnd
button" and "bkgnd field" defined already. I added "bg", "cd", "btn", "cd
btn", "cd fld", "bg btn", & "bg fld". It makes AppleScripting much more
HyperTalk-like. This has no effect on the scripts you produce, so there
are no compatibility problems.
In addition, I've discovered a bug in the AppleScript Script Editor which can
cause your dictionary window to come up blank if an aete is purgeable.
Hypercard's aete is purgeable, so this problem could affect Hypercard
dictionaries. I've fixed it in the enclosed aete.
Simply replace your Hypercard 2.2 aete resource with the one provided here
and you can begin typing the shorthand in AppleScript just like you can in
HyperTalk.

Subject: [*] Poly-RC 1.06 - a bug fixed game
Poly-RC is a game with falling rows and columns. The objective is to stay in
game
by removing blocks. Although it looks similar to Polytris, it is a different
game.
Rows or columns with 1 to 4 squares drop from top and stop when they hit the
dropped blocks or bottom. The squares can be removed by arranging them
sequences of 3 or more of the same color horizontally, vertically or
diagonally.
Poly-RC is more challenging because it has rows and columns with 1 to 4
squares,
bombs, weights and radiation. Depending on your skill, you can adjust the
difficulty of the game.
Minor bug was fixed in version 1.01. Version 1.04 runs on PowerPC Macs, too.
More bugs fixed in version 1.05. Even more bug fixed in version 1.06.

Subject: [*] SoundHandle-1.0.2; a sound utility
Version 1.0.2 fixes a bug that may have caused crashes with more than
256 screen colors. It now advises and shouldn't crash. Version 1.0.1 fixed
a bug which didn't allow the application to run on non-Color Quickdraw
machines (like Mac Pluses). The fix disables Spectrograms on those
machines (they wouldn't look like much in black and white anyway).
This application allows you to record, play, display, analyze, modify and
save sound samples. You can also generate waveforms, read 'snd '
resources from other applications, save sounds as System 7 sound files
and convert sounds to and from ASCII text files. The application operates
somewhat like a text editor, allowing you to cut and paste portions of
sounds at will (including between multiple windows). Frequency spectra
may be displayed, as well as gray-scale or full-color spectrograms.
Modifications such as reversing, adding echo, amplitude scaling,
resampling (changing the bandwidth/sampling rate), time scaling
(changing the rate of play without changing the pitch) and frequency
scaling (changing the pitch without changing the rate of play) are possible.
The waveforms may be printed or copied to the clipboard as PICT's, there
to be pasted into other applications. SoundHandle requires System 7, was
compiled only for the Motorola 68000 family and supports 8-bit,
monophonic sounds.

there's got to be an easier way, but since you don't have the utility he

As a reply to the first question about Mosaic, I don't know. However, I agree
that if you are going to use Mosaic, use version 1.0.3. 1.0.3 is very
stable. Only if you want to be part of the beta testing of the new Mosaic
should you go after any of the Mosaics that have an 'a' or 'b' in the version
name. This is all IMHO.
I wrote the authors of Mosaic, and they are aware of the many bugs found in

Subject: Apple HD Format works for ALL SCSI drives
Sometimes somebody asks about patches of Apple HD Format to allow
formatting of not-original-apple SCSI drives.
Well, such a program already exists and was made by Apple itself. Its name
is Apple HD Format 3.01, is a 68K program, works with *ALL* SCSI drive and
is released with AU/X package (perhaps because Apple expected that a AU/X
user could need a large SCSI foreign drive
Where to find it ? Everybody working with AU/X or AppleWorkgroup Servers
already has it ! It is in AU/X package, or in the system disks with the
Apple AWS80 or AWS95 servers, and of course ....in some Apple Service
Centers that use it to upgrade old Macs with a larger drive.
So actually there are three lines of Apple HD Format programs: the one well
known, working only for drives used by Apple, the AU/X one (even if 68K
program), working with all SCSI drives, and the youngest Apple HD Internal
Format, to be used with IDE Apple drive on the machine using such drive.

Reply to: AppleShare 3.x or 4.x? (A)
Edward,
AppleShare 4 will only run on 68040 Macs and Workgroup Servers and PowerPC
Macs and Workgroup Servers. It is expressly disabled from running on a 68030
Mac or below. A few months ago Macworld magazine printed an article
explaining how AppleShare 4 could be modified to run on an 030 Mac using
ResEdit. If you choose to go that route, keep in mind that Apple will not
provide technical support for any problems that may occur.
Apple highly recommends that you run AppleShare 4 on a PowerPC-based
Workgroup Server (6150, 8150, or 9150) since those are the platforms for
which all future performance enhancements will be developed.

Subject: Bug (confirmed) in MacLink Plus installer
Warning to all potential users/upgraders to MacLink Plus ver. 8.0.0:
DataViz tech support confirms that there is a bug in the Installer
that shipped with the 8.0.0 updater to MacLink Plus Easy Open
Translators (and possible with their other installers as well).
The bug:
During the installation of MS Word translators, when it means to ask
you "MS Word 5.x or MS Word 6.0", it instead asks, "MS Works 3.0 or MS
Works 4.0" Checking the second option if you have Word 5.1 means that
the translators installed in your Word Commands folder will cause
system crashes (bad F-line, CHK errors, and/or freezes) when
translators are invoked by Word. I suppose if the situation
(versions) were reversed, the same would happen.
To summarize:
When selecting MS Word translators:
Where it says, "MS Works 3.0" it means, "MS Word 5.x"
Where it says, "MS Works 4.0" it means, "MS Word 6.0"

I have had this problem on a number of Macs and the very worst one on my
current 7100 when it arrived, system 7.1 installed by Apple. The fault is
with the Desktop file at the root of your hard disk and no amount of
desktop rebuilding or Nortoning will fix it. The problem is that there is
no file called Desktop that is recognised (check this with ResEdit or
anything that will show invisible files and you may only have two of the
required Sys 7 Desktop files).
You have two choices.
If you have another Mac with your custom icn resourses shown, find the
Desktop file, make it visible, copy it to your SNAFU'd Mac and the make
both the original and the copy invisible. Next time you rebuild it'll
work.
Alternatively, and much simpler, create a file (any file, or I think even a
folder) and call it Desktop (if your Mac says it already exisits, check it
out because then I'm talking bollocks). Simply restart your Mac and force
a desktop rebuild. The Mac will find the new file, spot that it is
incorrect and fix it.
I also saw something on this in Imperial Colleges Mac ftp.
Best of luck

Subject: FileSaver/UnErase/Apple Menu Options Problem
NUM 3.1 contains FileSaver/UnErase which are supposed to help in recovering
files that are accidentally deleted. FileSaver does this by cataloging
information for a _limited_ number of files that have recently been
deleted.
Apple Menu Options provides the ability to remember a _limited_ number of
recently used documents, applications and servers. It does this by creating
aliases and placing the aliases in folders (one each for documents,
applications and servers) in the Apple Menu Items Folder. When a new alias
is created, the oldest alias in a particular folder is deleted.
These deleted alias files are being tracked by FileSaver. Since only a
_limited_ number of files are tracked, FileSaver/UnErase will actually be
able to recovery far few files that you might expect.
You have two options:
1) Turn off "Remember recently items" in the Apple Menu Options.
(my choice)
2) Increase the number of files that FileSaver tracks. You can
choose to
track up to 500 files/drive but this will increase the time required
for FileSaver to scan your drive at Restart/Shutdown.
Hope this information will help someone. Too bad Symantec does not provide
an option to ignore alias files in FileSaver. Symantec contact information
is available in the NUM 3.1 FAQ that I have submitted to the archives.

MicroBArtender Q&A
Some people have asked me:
Why can't I get past the splash screen?
- Make sure you read the disclaimer and about box; the keywords asked
are in italics
Why does it keep asking me those keywords questions?
- It should only ask once; Make sure you've installed a user name via
the sharing setup control panel
Why does the color sometimes not appear?
- This means you ran out of memory; give MicroBArtender more memory
via the Info menu
I can't read the about text through that island picture.
- MicroBArtender runs best in 8-bit colour via the monitors control panel
Hey, 2.3.2 is not HyperCard and I can't use the merge utility?!
- Yeah, sorry, if you need to use merge contact me and I'll send you
a stack version of 2.3.2 (must be a registered user)
Hey I can't use your program in black and white?!
- Yes, 2.3.1 is the black and white version, 2.3.2 is the color version
Thanks a lot for all the support. I'm still working on a new version.

Subject: Mosaic Netscape (C)
A few digests ago there were several enthusiastic recommendations for Mosaic
Netscape. Well, I just couldn't resist downloading it to try. It _is_ very
nice. One especially cool feature I like is being able to send e-mail from
within Netscape, which is precisely how I'm sending this particular post. The
mailer even allows me to include the current Web page at the click of a
button. (To be sure, however, the mailer is very simple---e.g., no cc or bcc
that I could find---but it suffices for quick and dirty stuff.) Just wanted to
share that

Subject: Powerbook modem [R]
>>I need a recomendation on purchase of a modem for my 180C. An internal would
>>be preferred but most are too pricey. What are the pros-cons of internal vs
>>external?
Well, one obvious advantage is the portability.
Internal Pros:
* only have to carry your 180c and not an external box and may be another power
supply in addition to the one for your 180c.
Internal Cons:
* if for some reason the internal modem fry, you risk damanging many of the PB
components; since the space in your PB is so tight.
Both:
* unlike the hard drive industry, the two versions (internal/external) from the
same manufacture are usally the same price.
I really like the Golbal Village product. I have recommened 5 purchases
>From both their PowerPort and TelePort lines. I myself have owned three of
their modems. Their software are much easier to use than any that I've
tried. And because their software are designed for their own hardware they
do not have to make as much comprimises as other Modem/Fax software
manufactures.
In my opinion, now a days due to the price of modems, it is almost silly
not to purchase a modem that have both data and fax capabilities.
One key item to remember is, not to let the sales person use the voice
capabilities of the modem as a selling point. In my opinion none of the
current manufactures have implemented this feature smoothly, and the
quality is not there to be reliable. If you're thinking that this feature
can give you an answer machine-on-the-go, think about the disk space that
may require for storing the same amount of voice data that your analog or
digital answer machine currently does. You see what I mean!
One other thing that sales person sometimes use to disguise the difference
in price of different modems. Is the fact that some modems have the same
baud rate for data as they do for fax, but then there are others that do
not. Some modem will list themselves as a "14.4k Data/Fax modem". Where the
pay on words is that it is 14,400 baud for data and only 9,600 baud for
fax. Most fax machines made after 1992 are 14.4k capable, so it is to your
advantage to ensure you get want you "think" you want.
There are also modems that only send fax and do not receive. Which are
usually not explicitly marked on their packaging.
These are all points to consider. For the PowerBook there is really not
that big of an advantage to have an external modem, since you purchase the
PB for its portability.
I hope this helps! I know it is a little late but I was away and not able
to read Info-Mac.

Hello. I have a Mac with an IP address and I want to print to a HP Laser

know if there is some sort of program/extension/whatever that will allow me
to print to it? Please respond directly to me and I will post the answers.

Subject: Problems with Jump Raven on PowerMac 6100/60AV
I recently purchased the CD ROM game Jump Raven for my son. The
game works fine on the old Mac IIcx but on the Power Macintosh
6100/60AV, the game sound does not play, the game's interface
does not appear to work and the animations seem to go
double speed. The Power Mac came with System 7.5. I have
tried the Paramount Interactive Technical Support phone
number but no one ever answers the phone. Any suggestions
as to how to get this to work on the PowerMac would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Subject: Quicktime "MIDI box" wish
If this exists already, lemme know.
I'd really like to see a system extension or other that let you set a MIDI
port to play the QuickTime MIDI sounds. Something that you could run
Encore, or MusicTime, or Lime, or MasterTracks, or any other MIDI-capable
music editing program, and just send the data to this extension instead
of an outside box. This would really simplify editing and tweaking music
on the Mac by eliminating that extra hardware, at least for the initial
stages of composition. It would be ideal if this software worked in the
background, so that as far as the rest of the system was concerned it really
WAS an external sound card or MIDI keyboard.

Subject: TIA Help!
Help!!
I'm am currently using the trial-period copy of TIA (The Internet
Adapter) and my 14 days is half-way used.
I'm having a very difficult time, however. Any help would be
appreciated.
At work I have a Mac Classic and a 2400bps modem. With this I have no
problems. I launch Z-Term, log into my account, force-quit Z-Term
(since choosing quit hangs up the modem) and tell InterSLIP to connect.
Everythings great!
When I go home and try to do the same on my LC II with the 14.4bps
modem, things are very different. I have MacTCP and InterSLIP set-up
EXACTLY the same. Yet, even though InterSLIP tells me I'm connected, I
can't get Eudora or any other Mac program to work AND my Mac crashes
with a bus error. What happens: Eudora is launched and when I try to
send mail it either tells me that there's a problem with the Domain Name
Server or that MacTCP is incorrectly configured. Again, I've got these
set up exactly like they are at work!?
I have a couple of guesses... 1) when I'm quitting the program (z-term)
I log in with, the serial port is still busy therefore the bus error.
2) when quitting the program I log in with, a signal or noise is sent to
the ULTRIX system I'm logged into and it acts as a BREAK causing me to
be kicked out of my account and back to the "main menu." I wouldn't
know if this is happening since I've already quit z-term and can't tell
what's going on.
To sum up: why it works on one computer and not on anther is beyond me!
I'm going crazy and losing too much sleep. It's the Mac with the
high-speed modem that I need this to work! If it IS my second guess
then I should write a login script for InterSLIP BUT for the life of me
I can't understand how to do that even when looking at other people's
scripts.
***
If anyone's really feeling helpful (I'm hoping) here's the login process
I need a script for...
to dial ex. 555-1212 and then...
Annex Username: surtees
Annex Password: mypassword
Select: av8r (the computer I'm logging onto)
login: msurtees
password: mypassword
And then I'd want to start tia.

I really appreciate this everyone! I've never been this stuck before.
Again, Thanks!

Subject: Web sound helper application?
Hi,
I just started using Netscapes Mosaic and accessed a site that had sounds
available. When I clicked the hyperlink for the sound, I saw a message that
Mosaic didn't know what to do with the .au file. After poking around, it
became obvious to me that I need some type of "helper" application to deal
with sound files.
What is a good Mac shareware/freeware "helper" application thast would let
me hear sounds (specifically .au files) in Mosaic?
Thanks, Frank Ripp [email protected], [email protected]

Subject: What about MPEG audio? (A)
[email protected] (John Maxwell) writes:

>Well, what of it? We now have Q2.0, and I've heard not a word about audio.
Several points:
First of all, MPEG-audio has nothiing to do with MPEG-video; they are
completely different things. I had heard of QT2 being MPEG-video savvy,
but nothing about MPEG-audio. I don't think QT2 does MPEG-audio at all.
Secondly, MPEG-audio is a little more problematic than you think. The main
issue is that decoding MPEG-audio in real time requires more CPU-power than
most Macs can provide. (Remember that MPEG decomprssion is usually handled
by dedicated hardware boards, and you can buy one of these for around
$200.)
There is an app to let you decompress MPEG-audio, called mpeg-audio-031.hqx
(look in info-mac/rec). The docs claim that it might be able to do
real-time decompression on a PowerMac, but not on anything else.
If you can't do real-time decompression, you can decompress to a file. On
my Mac IIci, decompressing a 4 minute song took about 25 minutes, and the
output file was 23 Mb in size.
Finally, I really don't think you can ever get a Beethoven Symphony on a
floppy (ie, 60+ minutes of music under 1.4 Mb). Based on what I see in the
Internet Underground Music Archives (which distributes lots of new music in
MPEG-audio form), you can get 4-5 minutes of one-channel sound in about
1.5-2 Mb. This is not much better than Sun u-law (.au) form. (Naturally,
stereo takes twice as much space.)
It may be that the MPEG-audio sound would sound better when decompressed
than Sun .au format, but my Mac only has an 8-bit sound chip, so I can't
judge one way or another.
For me, MPEG-audio is not a panacea; it's just a PITA. (I can play Sun .au
files directly, but it takes me a half-hour to play MPEG-audio.)
