Subject: [*] Amtrak schedules -- minor patch

Following is a replacement version of the Amtrak schedule
archive posted to your archive a couple of weeks ago.
No schedules have changed, but a few had inadvertently been
saved in WDBN format instead of TEXT. This file fixes that,
and adds a release notes item in the top menu so users can
see if the archive is up to date.

The format is a set of nested folders containing straight
text files. File and folder names are self-explanatory, so
that the archive can be dropped right into a gopher or other
information server and menus will allow users to get the
desired information.

If you run a gopher or other such server, you're welcome to
add this data to your system for your users. Please do
let me know if you do download and post the file, so I can
make sure you get any updates. Next general schedule change
expected in October '94.

Hi ho,

How exactly I became the person responsible for uploading Hearts to
Sumex is beyond me. Be that as it may, here is the new version of Hearts,
a very nice Mac version of the card game of the same name.
Features include, but are not limited to, animated players, multiple
skill levels, cool graphics (care of M. F. W. Hudson) and fun sounds.
Again, this is a highly recommended bit of shareware. I laughed, I
cried. It was better than Cats.

Jeremy's Control Strip Modules Release 1.0.0 (by Jeremy Kezer)

I've developed several control strip modules. Some of them are direct
replacements for modules provided by Apple, but with more options and
functionality. And some of them are unique. They are...

Control Strip Clock - Displays the current time. Via a popup menu, you
can customize the appearance of the display.
Control Strip Volume - A direct replacement for the Sound Volume module
provided by Apple. The icon shows the current volume setting in both
numeric and pictoral form, so you don't need to bring up the menu to
determine the current volume.
Control Strip Sleep - A direct replacement for the Sleep Now module
provided by Apple. Via the popup menu, you can select whether or not
to bypass the dialog that appears when AppleTalk is active.

Shareware; $10 registration fee suggested. See enclosed documents for
more information.

Stereogram Maker is a little program that will generate
random-element stereograms from any black and white picture. All
you have to do is provide the black and white picture (just about
any will do) and in the blink of an eye you will have a lovely
stereogram. Just put on your handy red-green glasses (red goes
on the right, please) and wondrous shapes will pop right out of
the screen at you!

The only change in this version, 1.0.2, is that it does not
require a 640x480 size monitor - so it will run on those rare
Apple 12-inch monitors.

Subject: [*] TreeViz1.2; a flat interface to directories

TreeViz 1.2

New information visualization tool makes hierarchies transparent,
gives users X-ray vision.

Compact and Interactive - See thousands of files all at once in a
dynamic interactive visualization.

TreeViz permits creates color visualizations all of the files and
directories on a Macintosh hard disk on a single screen, as well as
visualizations of general hierarchical and categorical data.

Each file appears as a rectangle whose size is proportional to the
file size, enabling users to spot large files at any level in the
hierarchy. TreeViz uses color to show file type, e.g. text, picture,
application, etc. By pointing and clicking a rectangle, TreeViz users
can bring up detailed information about nodes such as filename, path,
creation date, etc.

Other options include sound, which offers an additional dimension of
data revelation. Users can hear the directories and files as they are
displayed or hear patterns by dragging the mouse. Various scaling
factors, nesting offsets, depth controls, shape adjustments, shading,
and size controls complete the list of TreeViz features.

TreeViz runs on requires color and runs on Powermacs (non-native).

Subject: 2 video monitors on a PM 7100

I've just ordered a PM 7100 (non-AV model) and, according to the literature
Apple supplies and in McaUser & MacWorld articles, I can run two monitors
on it. Again, according to the same sources, conventional SVGA monitors are
supported.

I've been on the phone with an Apple technical person in what must be a
Twilight Zone episode or Laurie Anderson nightmare trying to get info on
how to do this. He seems to be clueless. What is more, Apple doesn't seem
to list any adapter that allows this to be done.

My understanding is that I can run a conventional Mac monitor from the
"VRAM" video port (sort of like one does, I believe, on the Quadras). But
the "DRAM" video port ("high-density") attached to the motherboard (kind of
like the IIsi and IIci) can run an SVGA monitor. Apple says I need both
their "Power Macintosh DIsplay Adapter" *and* a second adapter to go from
the outside end of that to the necessary DB-15 SVGA plug. This means my
video signal has to run through two adapters, and I worry about how much
control I'd have over the SVGA in this conviguration.

Am I right on this? Has anybody managed to do this, and if so, would you
please drop me a note?

Thanx in advance.

Dear Mac-mavens

A couple of days ago I got hold of a demo version of Nisus Full Flag 3.48
(with the Hebrew module). When I started it up, it informed me that in order
to handle Hebrew text, I would have to have the appropriate Worldscript module
installed.

Which brings me to my question: what should be added to or installed on a plain
System 7.1 (US, plus usual gaggle of extensions) to get it to be Worldscript-
aware, in particular of Hebrew? (Note: I am NOT asking for a version of the
Finder with all menus and dialogs in Hebrew!!!) Where can these items be
bought or FTPed (circle as appropriate)? Many thanks in advance for any
answers. If the answer is nontrivial or there is a lot of response, I will
summarize to the net.

I posted some info about the Color StyleWriter last week.

I tried printing a transparancy using one of the free samples that came
with the printer. The quality was exceptionally good, even better than
printing on plain paper. ColorSync matches the colors very well.

The prices for blank transparancies are not as bad as I thought. The
educational price for a 20-pack is $13.40, 67 cents each. Figure about 80
cents for non-educ pricing. Each transparancy comes with a white backing
sheet attached. Coated white paper is $9.20 for 200 sheets, although I
haven't used it yet.

NEVER run Speed Disk (or any other optimizer) on a volume known to have
problems (whether identified by Disk First Aid, Norton, MacTools DiskFix,
or other!!). Optimizers can only make a damaged volume worse.

I take it you've tried booting Disk Tools and running Disk First Aid 7.2?

Do you know someone who has a MacTools Emergency disk you can try?

Frankly, I wouldn't count on any of the utilities being able to repair the
volume, but miracles sometimes happen and repairing would be a whole lot
less work.

In all likelihood you'll have to reformat the volume and restore from your
backups (that's why you have them :-) If your backups aren't current,
you'll want to see if you can't at least copy recent files to another
volume (because of the damaged directory, some will, some won't; you stand
to lose at least some documents). It helps if you can borrow a Syquest
drive and a cartridge or two. Boot Disk Tools, drag a copy of the System
Folder to a clean Syquest cartridge, bless the folder (open the System
Folder and click on Finder); restart using the Sysquest as the startup
volume, install Norton on the Syquest, then use Finder and Norton's
recovery tools to get as many files off your HD as you can.

I had to do that ONCE (took the better part of two days). Then I bought my
own Syquest and began keeping volume images as backups on Syquest
cartridges (its worth it!).

I suspect what you're asking is, "Is there any way to have Info-Mac
and TidBITS arrive in a single message or as an enclosure." The answer
is no for Info-Mac and maybe for TidBITS (I'll do an article on this
in TidBITS sometime soon). However, Eudora is good about saving split
messages into a single file - just select them all and choose Save
As from the File menu.

The problem is that the person using Eudora has May Use Q/P turned
on, which means that Eudora tries to encode "strange" characteres
so they'll transfer properly. I suspect it has to do with MIME, and
the easy solution is to ask your sender to turn off May Use Q/P in
the Switches dialog box.

Subject: finder quirks, help!

Hello,
I have a couple of problems with the finder (system 7.01 tuneup).
a) I use NowUtilties with the "hide always feature activated).
I run several programs. The first is obscuring the icons (harddrive
icons) with its window. Switching back to thefinder at that point redraws
the icons. However, switching to another program, with a small
window does not redraw the icons in the back (since the hide
is activated, I pressume). Switching to the finder does now
not redraw the obscured icons (since the last window didn't cover them).
I have to mouse around in the dark until I find the icons again (and
they are redrawn). I have tried now some utitilities from sumex
that force redraws, but they dont' help, they only redraw the windows,
not the desktop icons. Any fix for this?
b) For years I have been looking for a way to have a menu command,
or even better, a keyboard shortcut to move things into the trash,
without that the trashcan has to be visible. This seems to be
an essential feature to me, and I am surprise to nobody has
been complaining about this more. After all, on small screens
it is very easy to obscure the trash. A recent tip in MacWorld
suggested making several aliases of the trash on putting them all
over the place. Sure, but either a trash that floats on top like
apparently in windows, or a simple command that moves a selected
item into the trash would be great. There is a hack called
basura that does this, however it's not bug-free, it cases crashes.
I assume a well writen script could maybe do the job, any such
scripts out there? I for the moment have a quickey set up for
dragging something into the bottom right corner, where the trash is,
but even that is not totally satisfying. I working version of
basura would be great!
c) Harddisks are getting bigger and bigger. If you don't want to have
huge overheads, one partitions the drives. As a consequence you
get a whole slow (especially if you have cd, and other external stuff)
oops, slew, of icons on your screen. So for I have found no way
of hidding some which do not need to be on the desktop (since
they get accessed only through open dialogs). By replacing
the icons with empty space, however, one can make them nice and
small, and push them all together. However, as soon asyou
restart the computer, all the icons get spread out again.
Is there a way to "fix" that? Can on lock harddisk icons in
a particular place (after all, other icons don't move either), or
if not, can one instruct (modify) the finder to have a narrower
spacing for the icons?
Any help appreciated. I have alreayd been asking some of these
questions for years and not gotten any satisfactory responses.
Thanks in advance (replies best by email, I summarize).

Someone suggested that I use Asante's Mini EN/SC10T SCSI ethernet card and

My questions are:

1. If I have these two things, can this be done?

3. Where can I get the hardware cheaply?
4. Is there any other cheap brand that can replace the aforementioned card?

After Eudora receives the digest (or TidBITs) as 2 or more messages, hold
down the shift key to select all the parts, then pull down Save as... from
the File Menu. Leave "Save Headers" and "Guess paragraphs" UNchecked. Use
the standard file dialog to save in the Info-Mac or TidBITs folder for

Subject: Linguistic Survey-French-

I'm looking for French native speakers to conduct some tests in
linguistics, over the next year. They'll consist of a couple e-mail
messages per month, maxima mensura (two months may pass by without any
reply). People will be asked to 'disambiguate' sentences, taken from small
contexts (app. 50 lines of text), and containing a particular segment. They
need a full linguistic competence in French (natives do) -- ambiguity cases
are what they are, ambiguous... -- and be available via e-mail, i.e. able
to respond within a week or so. The reasons for asking readers of Info-Mac
are quite simple:

1) I need no linguists (or else I could have sent a query to
'Linguist List' ). Spontaneous analyses [read
opinions] by native speakers are what I search for.
2) Readers usually have e-mail addresses (they'll need one to
contact me).
3) The wide distribution of the digest can assure me some will
write from different parts of the world (most important aspect, as French
is subject to variation).
4) They'll have to understand the basics of Macintosh, as I will
send some texts containing on one hand accentuated letters -- thus the need
for binhexing and de-binhexing binary text files -- and possibly, on the
other hand, small graphics or schemes; translating files for everyone's
taste (and hardware) would get complicated.
5) Parallels may have to be drawn between French and English.
Those who'll respond to my query can obviously find their way in English.
All e-mail messages will be written in French though, and the analyses
projected for segments not present in French will follow the same
guideline.

Thanks in advance. PV [94/06/08;13:22:03 EST]

Netters,

We have a network of macs on appletalk hooked up to a Fastpath 5, all running
MacTCP (albeit different versions-some are at the most recent, 2.0.4, some are
using 2.0a4, some 1.1.1, etc-we are trying to get them all updated). What we
are seeing is several of the macs where not registering their IP addresses on
bootup.

We set up a test of only two macs turned on, both using MacTCP 2.0a4, system
7-tuned. Of these, only one would show up with an IP address normally, the
other would not normally. We confirmed that no one else had the same IP address
as the second machine, reloaded system software, and put on MacTCP 2.0.4.
Still, it did not show up with an IP address. We then updated the first machine
to MacTCP 2.0.4 at which point the second machine under restart did register an
IP address!

So, the next day, we updated two other machines to MacTCP 2.0.4 from 2.0a4.
Previously, both machines had registered their IP addresses. Now, one does and
the other doesn't!!

I have had lots of experience with MacTCP not loading because someone has
prempted the IP address. But this experience has proven very frustrating. Does
anyone know what could prevent MacTCP from registering the IP address (other
than the IP # being used already)?? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

The Metrowerks compilers and development environment on the PowerPC are
very good. I have had no compiler-related problems compiling a
native-PowerPC version of PlainText, using their C/C++ compiler. As has
been reported in MacWeek and elsewhere, Metrowerks uses an integrated
environment. It reminds me very much of all the Think and Lightspeed
products. They also have a Pascal Compiler.

I have always liked MPW. While billed as a two-computer system--you compile
on 680x0 mac for execution on the PowerPC--I have been able to run MPW and
its PPC C compiler on a 7100 in emulation. There is a pre-release MPW that
is native PPC, a few tools, but no compilers yet for us in the general
public.

We also own a license for the Language Systems Fortan compiler for MPW.
This is a very good product that produces fast code for 680x0 machines.
Using it, we have been able to integrate several Fortran number crunching
source libraries into Mac applications written in C. However, we have just
received the bad news that their PPC Fortran compiler will not be available
until Fall, 1994. Too bad, that is a long ways off.

My general comments on the PowerPC Macs themselves is that they work! We
have not experienced a single crash or a single glitch in running all sorts
of Mac software on our 8100 and 7100. Of course, they are emulating 680x0
code and many applications are not as fast as on 68040 quadras. However,
Quickdraw is very snappy, so any application, IMHO, appears more responsive
that on Quadras.

Metrowerks has a native C/C++ compiler in their CodeWarrior series of
compilers. I have heard no end of good things about them. Academic types
can get the top-of-the-line version (CodeWarrior Gold) for $99.

I am waiting on Language Systems native FORTRAN compiler. I have used their
compiler for years and have been very pleased with its stability, compile
times, and generation of fast code. They expect to release it in August. I
also know that Absoft has a native version of their FORTRAN compiler, but I
have never been happy with the stability of Absoft's compilers. In
addition, I know that Apple has and continues to work with Language Systems
on their compilers -- I don't believe the same thing can be said about
Absoft, though I don't know for sure.

I have had a PowerMac 8100/80 for about 6 weeks and am quite pleased with
it. Literally everything I used to use on a Quadra 800 works just fine on
the PowerMac and there is little noticable speed loss. The programs I am
eager to see go native are: Mathematica, Illustrator, Textures, and
Language Systems FORTRAN since they seem to be those that tend to
bottleneck my productivity. Well, I now have Mathematica and Illustrator
running native (and they are quite impressive), Language Systems is
supposed to ship the native version of their compiler this summer (August),
and Blue Sky is talking about a native version in the fall if I remember
correctly. The bottom line from my perspective is ... buy one, but if
FORTRAN is your most important app, wait until August.

Check out comp.sys.mac.programmer--there are many articles re: Metrowerks'
PowerMac compilers (none supporting Fortran, I believe).

I bought a 7100/66 (non-AV) to replace my LCII w/ accelerator card. I am
tremendously happy with my purchase--my net gain in speed was about 2.5x (your
mileage may vary). I don't have any native versions of my major apps yet
(mostly MS stuff), but native shareware is about 4x faster than 68k stuff
(i.e., Compact Pro 1.35P). I'm not missing the native major apps too badly
because of the overall speed increase I already mentioned, but believe me, my
mouth is watering for it.

I got the 8MB/250MB/CD-ROM version...the HD is actually 270MB (formatted!). The
CD-ROM works just like the one in your stereo. I can use two monitors right out
of the box, and 16-bit video is nice...

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Subject: Router Internet Apple

HELLO,
I submitted this request a few days ago and received no answer. I try
again, hoping that somebody, somewhere...

We have 15 Macs connected to a Gatorstar with many other Macs. We want to
establish an independant zone for these 15 Macs and have to choose between
a Gatorbox and the RouterApple TCP/IP. We already know what we can obtain
with the GatorBox, but have some questions about the Router. Perhaps
somebody here has some experience with it and is able to inform us.

Questions:
Are there performance losses with the Router?
Are there known bugs about the Router: installation, operation... ?
For which reasons should we choose the Router or the GatorBox?

Subject: scsi drivers - what/where are they?

Would someone please explain scsi drivers to me? In particular, I
don't understand the following:

(1) We bought a hard drive; a mac plus could not "see" the drive so
start up from it. The shop changed the "driver" (on the hard disk);
now the mac plus could see and start up from the hard drive.
(2) Later, we attached the same hard drive to a color classic (as
external). The color classic could not see the drive.
(3) I started up the color classic with the hard drive attached,
using the Disk Tools disk. The color classic still could not see the
hard drive. But using Disk First Aid, the hard drive appeared!
(4) This made me think the problem was fixed (Disk First Aid said it
had "fixed" the drive). But no; starting up again from the color
classic's internal hard drive, it could not see the external hard
drive.

How is it that some machines can see a drive and others can't? How
is it that some *programs* can see a drive and others can't? Thank
you for your time. m.

Subject: SoftWindows

I have just installed my new copy of SoftWindows 1.0.1 (SW) and appear to
have run into a conflict with some of my installed extensions. The
situation I am encountering developed as follows:

My first installation attempt proceeded in two stages. The first stage was
to use the easy install option, and thereafter to continue with a custom
installation to install the Insignia TrueType fonts, etc. Out of force of
habit, I restarted after the installation was complete. Thereafter I opened
SoftWindows. Its registration and reaction times were so slow that I
thought it was not working. So I decided to try and re-install . . .

My second installation was a single stage attempt using the custom
installation option. Again, out of force of habit, I restarted after the
installation was complete. I encountered the same
slow-as-molasses-in-an-Canadian-Winter reaction. So I decided to try yet
another re-installation . . .

My third attempt was also a single stage one, but using the easy
installation option. This time I refrained from a restart and opened SW
immediately upon quitting the installer. Well!!!!, it was positively
sylph-like in its registration and response times. I could'nt swear to to
its athletic ability being on a par with a 486, only because my encounters
with such a beast are few and far between and of minimal duration by
choice. But the contrast was glaring.

After playing around in the DOS and Windows Quicksand-box for a while I
exited from SW, restarted, waited for my parade of inits to end, waited for
my start-ups to start-up, etc., and the opened SW. Well?#!?#!, I was back
in my Canadian winter environment.

As an interesting aside, I did notice that the registration process at SW's
start-up speed-up when I pushed SW into the background by bringing the
Finder forward.

After several attempts and some extensive waits, I finally made contact
with a technical assistant (assister? assistor?) at the SoftWindows desk at
Insignia.
His reaction was remarkably matter of fact and singularly uninformative. In
a nutshell:
Yes, he was not surprised to hear of the slowdown (this notwithstanding
that it was the first time Insignia had heard of it from a paying
customer!). The source of his equanimity was some sort of a statement from
Apple acknowledging that certain types of inits were slowing SW down. I
probed further, but to no avail.

I am running on a PowerMac 7100/66AV, with 40MB RAM and the Apple Cache
Card. I have also updated my system with SU3, and have a large number of
third party inits installed.

I really don't want to enter into an exhaustive binary search to isolate my
problem. Therefore I would be most appreciative of any information that
might be of assistance.

Thanks.

Subject: Speed Reader II substitute?

Dear Netters:
I'm looking for an application that's comparable to Davidson &
Associates' Speed Reader II. For those of you not familiar with
Speed Reader II, Speed Reader II is (or was) a nice application for building
individual's reading speed through various visual exercises. It's quite user-
friendly and inexpensive. Unfortunately, its most recent version (approx.
1986) only support pre-System 7.0 setup. A customer service rep. at Davidson &
Associates told me that they have already abandoned the Mac platform on SRII's
future updates; only updates available are for its PC Windozzz version.
Now, can someone recommand an application (commercial, shareware,
freeware...etc.) at least comparable, if not superior to Speed Reader II?
My thanks in advance. And oh, I'd appreciated if you could also mail your
reply to my account, just in case if I missed reading issues of info-mac.

Subject: Startup help

Jacqui,

Sorry to hear about your problems with your Mac. I experienced a similar
problem with my Mac about 3 weeks ago. My Mac (Centris 650 8/230/CD)
could not get past the smily mac at startup. The Icon would change to a
disk with a question mark. Apple support (after about 45 minutes on the
phone) recommended that I take the machine in to my retailer for
diagnosis.

I was lucky in that my hard disk had not crashed (a pretty serious
problem). I only had a software problem with the directory (desktop
folder) to my disk. The retailer was able to copy all of my data to
one of their Macs, reformat my hard disk, then copy my data back. Whey, I
was lucky.

The first thing you should do is not write any files to your hard disk.
Assuming you don't have a backup of your files, you should try to boot
from a startup diskette and save any valuable files you have to a
second diskette. Then I would seek professional help (your local Apple
dealer) to resolve your problem.

Here's what my Apple dealer recommended that I do to not experience this
problem again.

1. Always power down your Mac using Shutdown from the Special menu. Any
other means of powering down could damage the file structure.

2. Rebuild your desktop file at least once a month. This can be
accomplished by rebooting and holding down the option and command key
until a dialog box appears which prompts you to rebuild.

3. Try to use control panels and extensions which are compatible with
the version of operating system on your Mac. Since I am running the
latest version of System 7.1 with Update 3.0, I try not to use extensions
and control panels which were created before 1992.

4. Use the Apple Compatibility Checker utility to determine if there are
conflicts between software packages on your computer.

Good luck with your problem. Let me know how it works out.

You should call Symantec technical support for help. I have found in the

It is because you have the switch "may use QP" on in the Switches... dialog
(special menue). The strange characters are a translation of special

If you switch of this option the problems will disappear.
