Animorpher (C) 1994 by Michael Frazier. Shareware $25.
Snipped from ReadMe file:
>Animorpher (C) will allow you to do animation and three dimensional morphing
>with Ray Dream Designer (C) 3.0.x. It takes two keyframes you create in

Burn is a file-shredding application, formerly bundled with my encryption

Burn makes sure that no one can recover files deleted from your system.
It supports multiple erase passes with user specified or random patterns.
It supports cleaning free space on disk in case you accidently deleted a
file that should have been burned.
It has an easy to use drag-and-drop interface, with user selectable
confirmation options.
Burn requires system 7.

Coffee Break 1.0 is an application designed to help you reduce your chances

the time, and every so often, it will force you to take a break by taking
over control of the computer.
Coffee Break requires System 7, but will run on any Mac (as long as it's
running System 7). Coffee Break also has a couple features that work only
in conjunction with AfterDark, Basic Black, or Darkside of the Mac.
However, you don't need one of these, or even any screensaver at all, to

I am pleased to announce the release of Enigma 2.4
The following are new features of Enigma 2.4
- Enigma 2.4 runs native on Power Macintoshs
(encryption speed is well over 100K/sec on Power Macs)
- Enigma 2.4 provides cross-platform encryption
capability with the newly released Enigma for Windows.
- The ugly sequence of dialog boxes that resulted when
an incorrect key was entered has been fixed.
- A bug that occasionaly resulted in files (usually
encrypted files) showing up as "rescued items" in the
trash has been fixed.
You should upgrade if you are using any previous version of
Enigma.
My file shredding application Burn is now being distributed
separately to save download time. It has not changed with

Subject: [*] Poly-Tile Updated version; a board game
Poly-Tile is a board game with color pieces on hexagonal or square grid.
It is easy to learn, but hard to master.
The object of the game is to remove all the pieces except one in as few moves
as possible. A move is a piece jumping over other piece landing on a blank
space
or
another piece. Depending on your skill, you can select level and board, custom
or
built-in.
Poly-Tile 1.02 is compatible with more INITs and CDEVs.
Menu items are changed in version 1.01. Minor bugs are fixed.

Subject: [*] powerlock-35; customises and protects
Announcing PowerLock 3.5...
PowerLock is the "front door" to your Macintosh. It is an easy to use start
up application that can be completely configured and customised to suit your
own personal needs.
PowerLock started out as a start up security application, and this remains
its major task. However, through AddOn Technology, PowerLock can become much
more. Included with PowerLock are sixteen AddOns that provide new features
ranging from extra security features, to VoiceMail capabilities.
Here's a summary of the main improvements since Version 3.1:
- Intelligent Installation Assistant selects only the security features you
need
- Added Safety Features help to ensure you don't inadvertently find yourself
locked out of your Macintosh
- Improved Security, including easily bypassing the Shift key if required
- Improved handling and support of StartUp Screens and TimeOut Screens
- Power Macintosh Compatible (in emulation mode)
- RandomDesktop AddOn provides a different PowerLock Desktop pattern each
time and lets you use existing wallpaper files
- SoundMessages AddOn for simple VoiceMail capability
- PowerUsers AddOn has many new features for handling multiple users of a
single
Macintosh. This includes the option to prevent access to the Finder,
enforced
password expiry periods, disk and volume protection etc. Also imports
usernames
from AppleShare volumes. Adds specific balloon help.
- AutoLauncher AddOn lets you set up StartUp Items folders for each different
user
of your Macintosh
PowerLock is ComboWare, a combination of PostCardWare and ShareWare.
Education and bulk discounts apply. A registration form can be found in the
Manual. PowerLock may be included on the commercially available CD-ROM of
the Info-Mac archives and other Shareware collections.
All current PowerLock users should update to this release.

Subject: [*] SpectreNotes v4.0; an alternative to the Note Pad DA
This is SpectreSoft's alternative to the notepad DA. It has an infinite
number of scrolling pages which allow you to have as much text as
possible in SpecttreNotes. You can use any font, size or style you want.
You can even print out a note or save it to a text file (useful if you use
SpectreNotes to keep a long list of addresses or phone numbers). This
version cleans up all the bugs that SpectreNotes has had and works fine.
This nice little Hypercard notepad can be put into the Apple Menu Items

have gone back to HyperCard's printing function because it keeps whatever
fonts and styles and formatting you have in your document. We also fixed
and went back to the ability to store documents right in SpectreWrite
which could be better than simply saving it to a text file because you
lose the formatting that way. This version finally works right and

This is because the only 9600 access ports to AOL are through SprintNet.
They are trying to work with Tymnet to get 9600 access available that way
as well. Supposedly all current SprintNet access nodes will be upgraded to
9600 within the next year (with some being tested at 14.4K+).

Again, this would be via SprintNet only. They apparently have a few nodes
testing at the higher speeds around. If I remember correctly, though, the
ports on AOL's end are strictly 9600 so even if you connect to your
SprintNet node at 14.4K (and the AOL client will say "Connecting at 14400
baud" and base calculated transfer times on that rate) you more than likely
are only getting packets from AOL's host at 9600.
This may have changed, but if so it is for testers (development, alpha, or
beta) to work out the bugs--meaning that anyone else who is "lucky" enough
to get a higher-speed port may be delaying the wider availability of 14.4K+
access. There were similar delays in getting the Mac 9600 software out from
what I have heard (WinAOL users could already connect at 9600, making it
more difficult for the Mac testers to test at that speed).

Subject: Copying files using Mac/PC exchange [Q]
I am trying to transfer files from a UNIX network to my Mac, using a
DECstation 5000/25 which has a floppy drive which can read MS-DOS disks
(it's marked 2.88M, but reads PC formatted 1.44M disks no problem). I use
the Mtools set of commands on the DECstation to copy files to the floppy
disk (mcopy, mdir etc.). Often this causes no problems and I then take
the floppy disk to my mac and copy the files off the floppy. Sometimes,
however, especially with large files, I get an error -71 when I try to
copy the files from my Mac (which has Mac PC exchange on it) to my hard
drive. This always seems to happen with the same files (which are often
compressed in .hqx.gz format).
I have the table of system errors, so I know what error -71 is, although
it doesn't mean a hell of a lot to me. What I want to know is, what is
going wrong? I have tried with different disks (on the assumption that it
was a media problem), different DECstations. Always the same files always
in the same point in the file. It seems to me that maybe there are some
characters in the file that are causing confusion.
So is this right? And are there any ways I can compress/encode the file
that will prevent this from happening?
James.

Subject: Dueling PowerBooks
Hi all,
A recent post reminded me of a funny moment: I was working
on a PowerBook across the table from my friend Gregg, who
was working on his PowerBook. Another friend came into the
room, took one look at us, face-to-face, with the PowerBooks
back-to-back, like this: _/ \_ and said, "You've sunk my

So, if the newly posted Mac Battleship doesn't work over a

including that feature for a future version. Incidentally,
I wonder if you can connect two PowerBooks using AppleTalk
over a serial cable, like an ImageWriter cable... or would
that be suicidal?

Yes, but the question is how patient are you at learning a whole new
development environment? FP will do all those things well, but learning how
to do them may drive you crazy. The advantage is that FP is so fast at most
things you don't have to have the optimal solution to have amazing speed,
especially for small databases. (small is anything under 100,000 - one
hundred thousand - records)
The disadvantage is that FP is a memory _pig_. You don't really want to be
running FP on an 8meg machine, even for puny databases. As for disk space,
FP data files are fixed width fields/records, so you can get disk space
requirements by algebra. (If you install all the example files, etc., the
install will suck up 20 megs of your hard drive).
>What is the difference between FoxBase and FoxPro?
FP is about 2 major revisions in capability newer than FB. Much of FP was
familiar to me as a FB user, but there are so many new capabilities that the
learning curve is pretty steep. And there a many performance enhancements
that I can't really evaluate well (Rushmore, e.g.).
The FP manuals are much better than the FB manuals, but you'll still be
scratching your head often if you're coming in cold to the xbase language.
>will Panorama
Panorama is not a relational db, but has some slick links to fake it in some
instances. I think Panorama started out as a memory only db, but may have
gone beyond that.
One major advantage of FP is that there are many, many knowledgeable users
in the Foxforum on CI$ willing to help folks get past _any_ problem they
have programming FP. MS got a bargain no matter how much they paid for Fox.

On PC MS-Word can read the HPGL file but on Macintosh it is not possible.

Subject: inexpensive (not cheap) 16" monitor review
Dear Info-mac Moderators:
I recently purchased a 16" monitor that I'm very happy with and have never
seen reviewed before in any magazine or previous digest. I'm talking about
the ADI MicroScan 5EP.
The 5EP is an MPR II compliant monitor with a 0.26 dot pitch. It's not a
trinitron but has extremely sharp focus and will sync with resolutions up
to 1024*768 from the internal video of my Quadra 650. It didn't come with
a Mac to VGA adapter but I picked one up at the local Computer City Express
and with the addition of some resolution switching software (not made by
apple) I was soon doing resolution switching on the fly.
The monitor is also VESA DPMS-compliant. This is a fancy way of saying
Energy Saving since guess what?--this monitor WORKS WITH APPLE'S ENERGY
SAVER CONTROL PANEL!!! It really powers the monitor off, not just cuts off
the video signals.
One problem often associated with resolution switching occurs when you
change modes--the new picture is often not centered on the screen. This
monitor has user-defined modes that are automatically set for each
resolution. All you have to do is switch resolutions, adjust the monitor
ONCE, and from then on, anytime the monitor sees that resolution again, it
will auto center the image. I currently have the following modes
available: 640*480, 800*600, 832*624, and 1024*768. Each time I switch
modes the image is exactly where it should be.
Did I mention the fact that all the controls on this monitor are
pushbuttons since the monitor is controlled by its own microprocessor? You
bet your trusty copy of SimpleText. There are buttons to move the entire
image left, right, up, and down, buttons to expand or compress the picture
horizontally and vertically, a degauss button, and a button to activate
advanced functions like pincushion control.
The best part about this monitor is that it only cost $699. For those of
you who are craving 16/17" real estate but thought you only had a wallet
for a 13/14/15" I'd certainly recommend that you check this monitor out.
best rgds,

I just got an HP DeskWriter 560c printer. I'm impressed
with the quality, particularly its ability to print shaded
colours from photographs (e.g. the demo Kodak PhotoCD). Contrary
to a suggestion posted earlier about this printer, the three
colours are in one cartridge and the black is in a separate
cartridge. Thus, you needn't worry about having to change
colours, when only black is drained.
Now, I have a question. Has anybody tried the
Hewlett-Packard PostScript driver for this printer? I've been
told it is slow when printing TIFF files, but this doesn't
surprise me, since PostScript is not optimized for bit-map files.
However, I would like to know how fast it runs with PostScript
fonts, and EPS files. Also, will the driver allow two-up
printing, as with the LaserWriter 8 drivers?
Thanks for any advice.

If you are going from Word 5 to Word 2, let the Mac do the converting. That
is, when you save from Mac Word, save the file as a Word 2 file. When you
save from Word 2, save the file as a Word 2 file and let the Mac do the
converting. For this advice to work properly, keep in mind the following:
* TIFF and EPS graphics frm the Mac side convert into windows metafiles.
Similarly TIFF and EPS graphics from the Windows side convert into PICTS.
* You must have a file in your Word Commands folder called the "Windows
MetaFile Converter."
If you're using Word 6 for Windows, I'm not sure what the story will be,
but here's some pointers.
The Word 5 converter that ships with Word for Windows 6 does not convert
graphics. Microsoft recently released a converter that works with Mac Word
5 so you can save out in Word 6 format, but I don't know if it does
graphics or not. I'm guessing that it _should_, but I haven't personally
verified one way or another.
If you are dealing with WinWord 6, you should be able to transfer the
graphics by letting the Mac do the translation whenever possible and using
Word 2 as an intermediary format.
In Mac Word 5 save as Win Word 2, and then open the Word 2 file in Word 6.
- or -
In Word for Windows 6, save the file as Word 2, and then open the Word to
file in Word 5.
And finally, look for a file called "Conversion Information" inside the
folder that also holds your Word Commands folder. It has a lot of useful
information about what to expect from the Word 5 Word 2 conversion.
Hope this helps!

At work, we have had one since early January, we've printed over 35,000

negative comments that come to mind is where the exhaust system is (right

I am using MailShare by Glenn Anderson. It is an SMTP/POP3 server that runs
on the MacOS. I have it running on a MacClassic. It is very close to being
final and I have no idea what he will ultimately charge for the product but
it was very easy to set up and I like it. The only way to get it is to
become a beta tester and to receive it directly from Glenn at:
[email protected]
It handles mail in various ways.
* Accounts where a user attaches to retrieve mail. ([email protected])
* Accounts that automatically forward to other accounts. (postmaster -> kee)
* Accounts that explode messages out to a mailing list. The mailing list is
kept in a text file on the hard drive so that other software, such as a
database, can alter the mailing list. ([email protected] -> bunch-o-folks)
I access it with Eudora and PowerTalk and both work fine.
A happy user,

OK, this is _some_ solution, but note that fonts only need

So I gave up the hope of displaying PostScript on the screen,

Without QuickTime, a series of errors (-3000, -193, -32767) are

I had an 800K floppy that I couldn't read, and I called Apple's help
line because I had heard that this was a "common" problem. I listened
to the recorded message, which stated that "composite" SIMMs were
unsupported. That led me to think that maybe my SIMMs were suspect. The
system with the problem is a Quadra 660AV with a 32MB and a 4 MB SIMM.
Both are "non-composite" as far as I know. So, I swapped the SIMMs,
just traded their places in the SIMM slots. Whaddaya know, I can read
my floppy now!
If you want to ask me what the difference between "composite" and
"non-composite" SIMMs is, don't ask. I do know that if a SIMM has eight
chips on it, and no more, then it is "non-composite", and therefore
capable of possibly being supported.

There is an error in this issue. The HP 560C contains a color cartridge and a
black cartridge. Even documents which include color can use the black ink
cartridge - for text, for example. Get your facts straight.

Subject: What about an SE (R)
Hi Carlo
>I am considering buying a Mac SE 1/20 for about $150... do you think it's
>worth the price? I have an LCIII at present, and I would buy the SE as a
>portable machine (I often go out for the weekend and sometimes need my Mac
You like to lug around an SE computer? When I owned my first Mac (a 512!)
I bought also a carrying case, since "you never know if you want to use it
elsewhere". In fact, I did not use it elsewhere. After upgrading it to a
MacPlus, addition of an external hard disk drive, etc., it was really
impossible to pack everything, and also before, when the 512 worked with 2
disk drives of 400k each (one for system and application, the other for
date storage - that were those days... ), I never took it away from home.
But the decision is up to you. I think the SE can have the HD built in,
this was not possible with the Plus.
>The next question, of course, is about the System: I plan to use System
>6.0.8: what about it? shoud I use 6.0.7? what's the difference?
I never used myself 6.0.8 (I used 6.0.7 and then jumped to 7), but I was
told that this is just 6.0.7 with the system-7-compatible printer drivers
to allow mixed use on a LocalTalk network (correct me please, if I am
wrong). But you could still get more memory for the SE (and maybe a bigger
harddisk) and use System 7 on it. In the last phase when I still had the
Plus (see above), I had 4mB RAM and System 7.01 (tuned) without problems.
What disk drive does that SE have? 800k or 1.44m ? (It's a question of the
date of manufacture; the earlier SEs did only have an 800k floppy drive,
while the newer had the "FDHD" or "SuperDrive". My Plus only had an 800k
floppy drive, but I owned an external "Kennect Drive 2.4", connected with
a "Kennect Rapport" adapter, which enabled me to read/write/format
floppies of all sizes and systems (even DOS, ProDOS, etc.). I don't know
if Kennect Technology still exists - maybe someone knows about them ?
There was an 800k-disk-version of System 7 around those days as well,
but I think I don't have it any more. I sold my Plus with all accessories
some time ago.
>And then the third question: applications! I primarily use word processing
>& spreadsheet (Word 5.1, Excel 4.0, WordPerfect 3.0a). Should I consider
>an all-in-one package? (ClarisWorks?).
MacWrite II worked well on the Plus, the same is true with Lotus 1-2-3/Mac
and Word 5.1. Don't know about Excel and WordPerfect, but I think they
also should work. An early "Trial Version" of Claris Works killed my
harddisk driver and caused a Sunday afternoon disk reformatting and system
re-installation of the startup partition. I reported this to Claris, but
never received any reply - they did not say if they fixed the problem or
if they think it was something else that caused the problem. That's why I
keet ClarisWorks (any version) far away from my computer's floppy disk
slot.
Today I am using the following equipment:
home week-end/holiday
Centris 650 / built-in CD Macintosh Portable
8mB RAM 9mB RAM
85mB int / 160mB ext HD 40mB int HD with eDisk compression
Xante Accel-A-Writer (no permanent printer so far)
System 7.1 System 7.1
Both computers work well with MacWrite Pro 1.5, Word 5.1a, Lotus 1-2-3,
FileMaker Pro and the usual goodies such as games, utilities, etc.
I'd suggest that you also look for a "Mac Portable" instead of an SE.
Although it's not as portable as today's PowerBooks, it's much more
convenient to carry around. But again, the decision is yours.
As a last point I want to propose that you try "Nisus Compact" as your
word processor. This is presently promoted in Germany by ComputerWorks. If
you have a German address, you can send them an empty high-density disk
and you get the software free. No manuals, nothing, only a disk with a
compressed/self-expanding archive. This version works for 60 days. If you
are satisfied, you can get a serial number from them (by phone, fax or
mail) - but this is also FREE! You have to supply them with a code which
is generated on your Mac when you de-compress the application, so it works
only on one specific Mac - but I think you can get 2 or more serial
numbers; who cares, they are free. (Don't ask me why they do this.)
Once you have registered your software, you can also BUY the manual and
additional dictionaries (I think they include a German dictionary with
the trial version).
If you like I can mail you the disk so you can try it. ComputerWorks has
mentioned that everyone is allowed to distribute the COMPRESSED version of
Nisus Compact, but not the expanded version. So I am not doing anything
illegal.
Nisus Compact works with the "Claris XTND system" to access other file
formats and translating it to the Nisus format. The Claris XTND engine and
some (few) translators are included.
Greetings from Switzerland, Christian.

Subject: Where can I get a Hurdler card??? (A)
OK, I took the hint.
Creative Solutions Inc. is still in Rockville @
1-301-984-0262, &
1-800-367-8465
The Hurdler is serial expansion board that allows one to add up to
4 serial connections on the mac. It lists for $379.00 US
The Hustler is a serial expansion board that allows one to add up
to 2 serial connections on the mac, plus it can handle higher speeds, or
speeds the serial connections (sorry I am a bit vague here). It lists for
$299.00 US
I missed the original post about this, so if someone could cc this
to their mailbox. I am sure they would appreciate it. hint..hint...
Take care,

Subject: X-emulator for Mac
Hello!
We are using both Macintosh and PC's running windows. On both platforms we uses
a X emulator. On the Macintoshes, we use MacX and an old version of eXodus.
On the PC's we use PCXWare. The PC X-emulator is far far better than MacX and
eXodus. NCD (which makes PCXWare) has not made a PCXWare for Mac.
Does anyone know of other high quality X-emulator for Macintosh?
In advance, thank you very much.

I would like to hear inexpensive ways to upgrade my LC. I am not
aware of any mac or aftermarket boards that will take my LC to the le
vel of an LC475... (or LCIII)
I know that mac put out upgrades for LC->LCII, LCII->LCIII and LCIII->
LC475, but is there a way to take an LC to LC475?
Thanks!!
